Rideshare or Room for a Bike to Burning Man?

Hey! My friends and I are looking for either one ride to/from Burning Man or room for one bike (or both!) Would chip in for gas, and if the bike is the only thing taken, we can give you money, beer, or whatever it is your heart desires (within reason, of course).
Please help us take one more bike and maybe be a little bit more comfortable in a small car. :) Thank you!!

If you thought that you'd missed your chance to get a coveted ticket to Critical Massive, you actually haven't!
One of my friends bailed, so I find myself with an extra pass into Skalitude Burner heaven!
I'm not looking to make any money from the deal...just what I paid for it.
And who knows... maybe a back rub? Ok just a peck on the cheek. What! Do I smell or somethin'!?
Well anywho, I'm motivated to find this ticket a good home.
Even if you're a prude and just want to keep things professional.

Transactionally yours,

Here's your call....come one come all....start making that sailing/boat building dream happen!! My brother and I are working our Arses off on a 43 foot kettenburg wooden sailboat on a farm at the foot of mt baker. We'd love to find some people who would enjoy helping out with this beautiful boat in exchange for lots and lots of sailing around the San Juans this summer. We're looking for anyone who can bring more inspiration and creativity, any skills you have will be useful!! Either way this is a very chill place to hang out and build a wooden boat. She's a classic racer/cruiser....long overhangs, narrow, and sexy as..... I'm working 12 hour days on her and plan to learn to sail around the san juans this summer, then start crossing oceans :-).

Over the last few months, we've installed about 50 new frames, and are now in the process of putting in an unbelievable cabin and cockpit (complete with zebra wood, ebony, redwood burls, stained glass, and a HOT TUB!!!)

Just call Captain Morgan (i don't use e-mail much) at (646)644-1978

Christmas Day gathering

Hey there everybody,

Chelsea & I will be hosting a orphaned Christmas get together at our new house (no, it's still not finished, but close enough to live in), Christmas Day, tuesday 12/25/07. Anyone that doesn't have family in the area, can't get home to be with family, or just wants to get the hell away from their family--you're welcome here. Don't know if it will be 3 or 4 of us, or 10 or 20, but it will be a chill gathering and a chance to relax and enjoy the company of friends (no DJ's lined up, no keg stand competetions, etc.). If you can bring a dish, a snack, or a beverage to share it would be welcomed though not required. Late afternoonish into the evening, probably be done before 10:00 I imagine.

So we can have some idea of how many people might show up, please call or e-mail me offlist if you'd like to join us or if you need directions: uprivererik@gmail.com or 360-739-1724

Happy holidays,

Erik

Bassnectar November 17th, Bellingham!!!

The Boogie Universal Arts Collective is proud to present Bassnectar November 17th, 2007 at the Nightlight Lounge in Bellingham($10 advance tickets/$12 at the door). This is not a tour. He will not be playing Seattle or Vancouver. We are flying him in for an exclusive one night show for our exceptional little community.

BASSNECTAR
SAN FRANCISCO’S UNDERGROUND CULT DJ / PRODUCER HEAVYWEIGHT RELEASES
"UNDERGROUND COMMUNICATION"
THE NEW ARTIST ALBUM RELEASED APRIL 24, 2007 ON OM RECORDS

There are nearly three-hundred and sixty five nights a year, and on one third of them, somewhere across North America, you will find a modern day social mosh pit of hippies, ex-ravers, hipsters, dub reggae heads, Dead-heads, Burning Man freaks, artists, fashion experimentalists, social activists, and hip-hop enthusiasts all packed into one steamy room of grinding, orgiastic expression and musical experimentation known as a bass ritual, or, more precisely, a night with Bassnectar.

Playing at over one-hundred and fifty shows a year; to thousands of different people a month; from sold out festivals to overcrowded clubs and warehouses to tight and tiny bars and venues; Bassnectar’s enormous popularity reflects the current hunger for raw substance in modern music and a desire for social integrity inside the party scene.

2005 saw the debut of Bassnectar’s double-disc collection entitled "Mesmerizing The Ultra," a journey through next-level musical mutations, dreamy dubtempo, massive bass lines, heavy sledgehammer beats, head-nodding hip-hop, and a wild assortment of unlikely collaborations; remixing and producing with such artists as the enigmatic and mysterious Buckethead, the jam band super group Sound Tribe Sector 9, cult bluegrass rock star Michael Kang (String Cheese Incident), roots musical activists like Michael Franti (Spearhead), Heavyweight Dub Champion and KRS One, and dubstep/breakbeat pioneer FreQ Nasty. Both critically acclaimed and voraciously consumed, the record helped define the current sound of the West Coast Underground.

On the new album "Underground Communication" (released in April on Om Records), Bassnectar takes another step forward in his genre-bending blend of musical styles and emotions, combining the visceral melodic presence of modern listening music, with the force and volume of sound system dancehall devastation. Whereas the previous record featured collaborations with musicians and bands, the new record is more of an exploration of hip-hop culture, featuring scores of MCs and rhythmic poetics mashed atop a heavy, driving range of tempo and, of course, those signature throbbing bass lines. Rooted firmly in political conviction, philosophical intention and backed by a rabid fan base and dedicated following, “Underground Communication” sets a new standard for the possibilities of merging music, art, new media and social activism.

Speaking on the meaning behind the title of the album, Bassnectar explains "It centers on the concepts of indie media, the strength of underground networking, social activism and defiance through music, hip hop, and the internet." Judging from his enormous following without any commercial radio play, media push, or licensing product placement hype, the title fits perfectly, and comes at a time when issues of net neutrality, corporate media, and privatization of radio and news outlets couldn’t be more crucial.

Already gaining critical acclaim from tastemakers at URB, FLAVORPILL, and BPM along with winning local Nitevibe.com, SF Weekly and SF Bay Guardian honors for San Francisco's "Best DJ," Bassnectar’s music is forging new paths in the electronic music world, the Burning Man scene, underground hip hop circles, and beyond.

Stay tuned for the precursor singles entitled "Yo" featuring Spanish rapper Kristina Maria and “Bomb The Blocks” featuring underground queen MC, Persia; coming exclusively online in January followed by the Om Records 12" vinyl with remixes by Princess Superstar, Zion I (Amp Live) and Speaker Junk in February!

Hey everybody,
We've been a little swamped with the default world lately and have had a whole lot of time for Boogie goodness. This Friday (oct 19) we're looking forward to a chance to get together, snack on some good food, and enjoy each others company without any agenda or project.
Bring a dish and/or a beverage of your liking if you can, if not, just come. Feel free to invite friends. This will probably (really this time) be our last get together at this house before Chelsea & I finally move into our new place.

Also, be sure to check out Rashaan spinning at Wing Dome this Saturday--It's a blank canvas and a cozy little space itching for some good Boogie Universal vibes. Come get a groove on and spread the word.

Next Boogie meeting is scheduled for wednesday @ 6:00 at the Bellingham Public market.

See you soon,
Erik

3d Fractal Music video of Rena Jones - Open Me Slowly

Hello,
I've decided to release this video for free rather than try to sell it on iTunes or NativeStateDigital because it was originally intended as a gift and it seems wrong to try to sell something that was made as a gift, doesn't it?

http://www.phidelity.com/blog/artwork/rena-jones-open-me-slowly-video/
So yes, this is a 5 minute long animated 3d fractal music video set to Open Me Slowly by Rena Jones. On the page I discuss the software used, offer full-res downloads and stream the video.

Please leave comments on the page and share with your friends if you enjoy.
love,
kris

It's almost a done deal. I ask you the Boogie peeps, where would you rather dance your asses off--The Nightlight Lounge, or Rumors? Both are available and holding the date for us. Gotta decide, book it, and start promotions before we leave for Burning Man next week.
Wha'dya think?

Hi there bare-foot-boogiers. I was hoping to find a kind, nurturing individual to help me learn the art of fire poi. I have my own set of practice balls and have played around a little but have yet to find the motivation to devote the time to learn and practice. I am willing to pay for a couple half hour lessons a week with cash, home-cooked meals, artwork, microbrews, unique wine or whatever else you'll except. I truly desire to commit myself to poi so I'm hoping you would be willing to help. Thank you!

BreakBeatBuddha has been producing and Djing for well over 15 years. Although hip hop was his first love, it was the early warehouse raves and acid house scene that drove him into the studio to start creating sounds. It wasn't long before he was DJ'ing throughout the UK: playing for crowds in London, Brighton and Manchester, with the likes of The Capoeira Twins (Hope Records) as well as embarking on collaborative works with Left Coast breaks guru, Bassnectar (Om Records).
Since his relocation from the UK to San Francisco, BreakBeatBuddha has found both home and inspiration within the thriving Burning Man Community. He tours regularly throughout North America, serving up a devious, bass-heavy blend of breaks and glitched-out dancehall vibes for the headz. 3B's most recent work has included remixes and collaborations with RJD2, KRS 1, Shugga Sherm, and Mala Rodreguez.
The album … 2007 sees the release of 3B's album, "Mind Bombin", set to rock dancefloors worldwide ...
The Movement ... BreakBeatBuddha's approach to music is unique, as he has a clear understanding of its potential to activate and raise awareness to the many, pressing social causes of our times. He sees the role of the underground musical scene as providing a valuable grounds for authentic creative expressions of self, so important in today's world of corporate-controlled media. It is in this light that the role of artist, DJ, and music producer is re-invigorated as "meta-activist". The frontline is not geographical, but rather conceptual; fought not with bombs and bullets, but with beats, rhymes and basslines, in an effort to inspire the hearts and minds of a scattered populace.

VonDisco is a dance band. They are not trying to change the world, but simply trying to make it a bit more fun.
Fusing elements of Dub, Electronica, Disco, House, Drum and Bass, New Wave, and Lounge,VonDisco certainly push their sound to the far reaches of sanity. Started in 2006 as a side project and live jam session, the group has quickly evolved into a cohesive unit whose improvisatory journeys into deep dance-centered music connect to a wide audience.
Based on the open format of such ensembles as The New Deal (Canada) and The Bays (U.K.), it is evident through hearing VonDisco, in the live sertting , that anything can and will happen, and that a brand new musical idea in the spur of the moment, may take the band well into uncharted territory.
Rather than falling into songwriting clichés, VonDisco have a very open and organic interpretation of how a song or piece is formed, with certain elements always evolving throughout the performance. The time may speed up or slow down, the feel may change from dub into drum and bass, but it is all with purpose and relation to the listeners and dancers.
formerly Vic Briggs of The New Animals.

Humble 60's Musician; a Star in Three Cultures
by K.R.Kaur

"I like the guitar playing of Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and Vic Briggs". - Jimi Hendrix 1967

Eric Clapton amd Jeff Beck. we've heard of, but who is Vic Briggs?

Oh yeah, he was the lead guitar player and arranger for Eric Burdon and the New Animals; remember "San Francisco Nights", "Monterey", and "Sky Pilot"?

"Vic Briggs was the most musically adept musician ever to pass through the ranks of the Animals in either of that group's major incarnations. His association with Eric Burdon & the Animals (sometimes called "the New Animals") made him a key player in British psychedelia, his skills as a guitarist and arranger evident on most of that group's hits from 1966 through 1968. - Bruce Eder"

So what happened to him?

Vic Briggs fell in love with East Indian music and culture and changed his name, at the beginning of the 70s. He is Antion Vikram Singh now, a practicing Sikh, In 1979 he became the first non-Indian to ever play classical Gurbani Kirtan, the sacred music of the Sikh religion, at Darbar Sahib in Amritsar Indian, aka The Golden Temple.

"Classical Indian music takes years and years of study, but somehow I learned Gurbani Kirtan very quickly. So quite suddenly, there I was, this white guy, doing this totally 'Kick Ass Kirtan'! It seemed to disturb them somewhat. They didn't quite know what to make of me. One ragi, Sikh musician, I was close to told me that another ragi, very well known, said I was 'haaneekarak' (dangerous)."

Then in 1991 Antion was introduced to the music and culture of Hawaii. Surprised to find how much it stirred his soul, Antion began to listen to and learn to play Hawaiian music. This culminated in his moving to the island of Kauai in 1993. He was fortunate to study with an outstanding Kumu Hula (Hula Master), Blaine Kamalani Kia. Antion Vikram Singh has now become known and respected for his Oli (Hawaiian chanting) and has performed at leading Hula Festivals and competitions all over Hawaii.

"For many years, I have believed that my life purpose is two fold:

First to inspire and empower others spiritually with the sound of my voice.

Second, to help others to inspire and empower themselves with the sound of their own voices.

Recently, I have been inspired to add a third:

To bring through my music and presence a sense of aloha and healing to all I meet."

Where: 2405 Humboldt Street in the Sunnyland Neighborhood, close to the forthcoming
Trader Joes -- one block south of Alabama, 2 blocks west of James St. From downtown,
take James out towards Alabama, and take a left on Texas St at Deals Only, and go two
blocks in. House is white, with crazy garden and large pine tree on corner of Humboldt &
Texas. Call 510-5246 if you get lost somehow!

Eat: Bring something to throw on the BBQ for yourself and either a side dish or beverage to
share with the group.

Items on the agenda: building the pyramid. who is officially in the camp? esplanade
placement and plans. team roles & responsibilities. camp fees. potential fundraisers. food.
scheduling music & entertainment. costumes. timeline. transportation. food. fun. camp
set-up & break-down. etc. etc. etc!

Please bring a list of specific questions you have that you need to have answers for to be
able to proceed with your visions. I am hoping that we can get a lot of organization sorted
out so that everybody leaves with an "actionable" role -- something specific to work on.
Also, I hope we can lay out a calendar of meetings and work parties for July and August, so
bring your calendar or whatever. If you are able to bring camp fee $ for Eric, please do.

Anybody who is part of the camp, wants to be part of the camp, or is wondering about
whether or not to be part of the camp is invited! Pass on the invitation to folks not on this
list as needed.

Hope to see lots of BurningBoogieHamsters at my humble abode this wednesday!

HUGE news!!!!!!!!!!!

I just got off the phone with your new best friend, Jake from Burning Man headquarters. They seem to like the sounds of what we're up to here in the Boogie Universal ARTS Collective, 'cause they're giving us ESPLANADE PLACEMENT! Whooo hoooo!!!!

I originally submitted a request for 60 feet of Esplanade frontage with 120 feet deep for our camp, they've bumped that up to 100 feet on the Esplanade and 150' deep! That gives us lots more room to make our private camp area more comfortable, plus gives us room for some shaded couches right on the esplanade, and more room for whatever we can come up with.

While this is massively exciting, it also adds a fair amount of pressure. For those of you that have been to the Playa, you already know that the camps on the Esplanade are uber elaborate, interactive 24/7, and generally pretty friggin' inspiring. We're going to have to take this thing to the next level. Most people won't even know what they're placement will be until sometime in August--we get the early heads-up to have the extra time to make sure that our camp is 100% kick-ass. 40,000 people are going to know who Boogie Universal is; I think we should make that opportunity count and leave a good impression.

Here are some of my immediate ideas from my hyper-swirling mind:

we'll need to get more serious about fund-raisers:
we may need a bigger truck, that means more gas, more rental expenses, more money
we may need more infrastructure--more furniture for public, more decorations, more art installations, more...
How 'bout a new lead person: Furniture Building Initiator
I suggest we go with the tried & true Playatech designs (you can easily build a bench out of a single piece of plywood, no joining hardware or adhesives, so it easily transport as flat pieces). They can then be decorated and upholstered/cushioned to make them more comfortable http://www.playatech.com/index.php
It would be ideal to also have some sort of shade structure over them--totally open to ideas....
We need talent
I think we need to push for pulling off live sound--that's going to mean about $1,500 worth of gear that we don't have (snake, mics & mic stands, 2 more used amps)
we need someone that knows how to run live sound, preferably more than one person as to disperse the responsibility
VARIETY. I think several of us share the idea that we should be more than just a rave camp, or even more than just a dance camp. Know anyone that does theater, cabaret, spoken word, performance art, fire dancing, stripping, juggling, comedy, improv, live music, or preferably all at the same time? We've got a lot of spots to fill... all day, all night, every day, every night--whoa.
start talking to bands and djs. I know Edub was interested in helping book talent, let's get together as many leads as we can, then start sorting out a schedule
Presence:
Nils talked about getting a new banner or two printed up for us--let's get on that, as big as possible
Louisa talked about making a sign and/or flag--it would be great to have these done well ahead of time so that we can display them at our fund-raisers
the dj booth could use some either touch up, repainting, or adding to what's there... anyone interested?
the dj booth could really use some sort of lighting on the outside of the roof. The way it is now, it looks cool during the day (shiny silver surface) but at night completely disappears. It would be really cool if it had sequenced rope lights rotating around highlighting the 8 panels that make up the octagon roof. Anyone interested? Brock? Chad?
Camp mates:
With the added responsibilities, I wouldn't mind if we round up just a few more people that could help out. I think there are enough of us committed now as a core group, that we can decide together about new memberships (then the "core" becomes bigger--we don't need to maintain a 'core' and those outside the core, we're all in this together)
couches:
depending on our truck size/space situation, it would be very nice to have a couch or two. keep your eyes out for a freebie that doesn't stink (it won't be coming back home).

Obviously, we didn't get the pyramid done in time for Critical Massive. It's too bad, but we did our best. We'll get to take it down there next year after its' been playa proven.

Ok, that's it from me for now. Please brainstorm with me and let's make this thing absolutely friggin' awesome!

Super stoked,

Erik

Contact me if you need directions.

Hey guys,
Be sure to check out www.boogieuniversal.com
Mitch has been busy at work picking up the unfinished pieces left by others so that the Boogie finally has a decent website!

I'm sure he'd be open to suggestions and happy to receive content if you've got things you'd like to submit--like a little blurp about yourself for the volunteer bio page, any stories or experiences you'd like to share about the boogie, pictures, video, links, comments, layout ideas, etc.

Thank you soooo much Mitch for making this happen!

Boogie Pyramid

I'm scheeming up some goodies.

Picture a pyramid that stands 30 feet tall and has a base that's 60 feet by 60 feet. The Boogie Hut (DJ booth) would go in the middle, leaving over 1,800 square feet of dance space, plus ample storage, speaker, & chill space. The city of Bellingham permits dances based on one person per 7 square feet, if we borrow their formula, we end up with room for 257+ people to dance.

The wall of the pyramid would be bright white tyvek (no logos), perfect for our lighting and video projections. The structure could be easily transported and set-up (hopefully) by a small handful of people in a couple of hours. We could use it for our renegade mountain parties rain or shine, Burning Man, Critical Massive, rent it to other festivals, etc....

I've already talked to the wonderful people responsible for putting on Critical Massive and there's a good chance they would fund such a practical art instalation as they could use it by day for things like workshops, ranger training, etc. and serious ass shaking by night.

I've got an industrial serger (mega sewing machine) that I think we could tune up to work well with the material. I've got samples scheduled to arrive in the mail early next week. It would take setting up the machine in a big backyard and numerous people to help shuffle the huge pieces of fabric through the machine.

What do you guys think?

Wanna help build this thing?

I was in Denver last weekend and caught a late night Zilla/OOAH show. OOAH spinning with and in between Zilla sets. Holy moly, he's got it going on!! Super sick 'psychedelic' phatness.

He'd be perfect for the Meltdown. Or as a headliner for any other Boogie.

BASSNECTAR in Bellingham!

Boogie Universal and the Nightlight Lounge are very proud to present:

BASSNECTAR (aka DJ Lorin, Om Records, San Francisco)
With The Funginears, M.C.'s Souleye and Seasunz, elements of the Sustainable Living Roadshow, Discophile, Peter Rand, P'U, and more.
Tuesday April 10, 2007
Music begins at 9:00 p.m.
Only $8 advance, $10 at the door
www.nightlightlounge.com for tickets & info
www.myspace.com/boogieuniversalmusic

His name is DJ Lorin, his music is known as Bassnectar. He's a producer/dj from San Francisco, though if you look at his never ending tour schedule, it would appear his only home is on the road. I've personally seen him perform over a dozen times in numerous cities and festivals from Nevada to British Columbia. Weather in an intimate little nightclub or amongst 40,000 people crammed into a festival, when he takes the stage and casts his musical spell of Bassnectar out upon the crowd, no one remains still. Never have I seen an individual make so many people dance so hard. His passion for music is obvious (if not obsessive) as is his message that can be heard in his collaborations with Noam Chomsky and Michael Franti among others.

As far as electronic music goes, this is easily the biggest thing that's ever hit Bellingham. For anyone that's not sure if they like electronic music, they better check out this show before trying to decide.

Boogie Universal will be brining in a propper bass-heavy soundsystem and lights, with Peter Rand providing his legendary digital ambiance.

See below for the official press releases from his publicists and record label, Om Records.

Please contact me if you have any question about this event or Boogie Universal.

Cheers,
Erik
SAN FRANCISCO'S UNDERGROUND CULT HEAVYWEIGHT RELEASES NEW ALBUM

'UNDERGROUND COMMUNICATION' MAY 8, 2007 ON OM RECORDS.

LOOK FOR BASSNECTAR ON TOUR THIS SPRING.

With "the largest cult following of any DJ in San Francisco" and voted "Best DJ" by Nitevibe.com and SF Bay Guardian, Bassnectar's music is forging new paths in the electronic music world, the Burning Man scene, underground hip hop circles, and beyond. Playing at nearly one-hundred and fifty shows a year; to thousands of different people a month; from national festivals to sold out theatres to overcrowded clubs and warehouses to tight and tiny bars and venues; Bassnectar's enormous popularity reflects the current hunger for raw substance in modern music and a desire for social integrity within the music scene. The brainchild of Lorin Ashton, it's an experimentally collaborative music project, but it's also a platform for social change and political awareness. It's stylistically specific, yet it's an eclectic, full spectrum adventure.

Ten years into a strong underground career, 2005 saw the debut of Bassnectar's double-disc collection entitled 'Mesmerizing The Ultra,' described as "a kaleidoscopically brilliant funk conception" by All Music Guide [ Amazon.com]. For the next release, Underground Communication (Om Records/May 8, 2007), Bassnectar takes another step forward in his genre-bending blend of musical styles and emotions, combining the visceral melodic presence of modern listening music, with the force and volume of sound system dancefloor devastation. The new record is an exploration of hip-hop culture, featuring scores of MCs and rhythmic poetics mashed atop a heavy, driving range of tempo and, of course, those signature throbbing bass lines. Rooted firmly in political conviction and philosophical intention, and backed by a rabid fan base and dedicated following, Underground Communication sets a new standard for the possibilities of merging music, art, new media and social activism.

Bassnectar's live shows are a modern day social mosh pit of hippies, ex-ravers, hipsters, dub reggae heads, Dead-heads, Burning Man freaks, artists, fashion experimentalists, social activists, and hip-hop enthusiasts all packed into one steamy room of grinding, orgiastic expression and musical experimentation.

Bassnectar is on tour this spring in support of Underground Communication, including select shows with visionary puppeteers the Funginears.
There are nearly 365 nights a year, and on nearly 1/3 of them, somewhere across North America, you will find a modern day social mosh pit of hippies, ex-ravers, hipsters, dub reggae heads, Dead-heads, Burningman freaks, artists, fashion experimentalists, social activists, and hip-hop enthusiasts all packed into one steamy room of grinding, orgiastic expression and musical experimentation known as a bass ritual, or, more precisely, a night with Bassnectar.
Bassnectar is a band, but it's also a DJ. It's stylistically specific, yet it's an eclectic, full spectrum adventure. Playing at nearly one-hundred and fifty shows a year; to thousands of different people a month; from sold out festivals to overcrowded clubs and warehouses to tight and tiny bars and venues; Bassnectar's enormous popularity reflects the current hunger for raw substance in modern music and a desire for social integrity within the music scene.

Ten years into a strong underground career, 2005 saw the debut of Bassnectar's double-disc collection distributed by Universal Music, entitled 'Mesmerizing The Ultra.' Described as "a kaleidoscopically brilliant funk conception" by All Music Guide [ Amazon.com], it is a journey through next-level musical mutations, dreamy dubtempo, massive bass lines, heavy sledgehammer beats, head-nodding hip-hop, and a wild assortment of unlikely collaborations; remixing and producing with such artists as the enigmatic and mysterious Buckethead, the jam band super group Sound Tribe Sector 9, cult bluegrass rock star Michael Kang (String Cheese Incident), roots musical activists like Michael Franti (Spearhead), Heavyweight Dub Champion and KRS One, and dubstep/breakbeat pioneer FreQ Nasty. Both critically acclaimed and voraciously consumed, the record helped define the current sound of the West Coast Underground.

On the new album "Underground Communication" (due out in April on SF Indie Om Records), Bassnectar takes another step forward in a genre-bending blend of musical styles and emotions, combining the visceral melodic presence of modern listening music, with the force and volume of sound system dancehall devastation. Whereas the previous record featured collaborations with musicians and bands, the new record is more of an exploration of hip-hop culture, featuring scores of MCs and rhythmic poetics mashed atop a heavy, driving range of tempo and, of course, those signature throbbing bass lines. Rooted firmly in political conviction, philosophical intention and backed by a rabid fan base and dedicated following, "Underground Communication" sets a new standard for the possibilities of merging music, art, new media and social activism.

Speaking on the meaning behind the title of the album, Bassnectar's founder Lorin Ashton explains "It centers on the concepts of indie media, the strength of underground networking, social activism and defiance through music, hip hop, and the internet." Judging from his enormous following without any commercial radio play, media push, or licensing product placement hype, the title fits perfectly, and comes at a time when issues of net neutrality, corporate media, and privatization of radio and news outlets couldn't be more crucial.

Already gaining critical acclaim from tastemakers at URB, FLAVORPILL, and BPM along with winning local Nitevibe.com, SF Weekly and SF Bay Guardian honors for San Francisco's "Best DJ" and forging new paths within the burningman scene, the jam band scene, as well as underground hip hop circles and all styles of emerging electronic music, the Bassnectar concept is constantly expanding and redefining itself.

Stay tuned for the precursor singles entitled "Yo" featuring Spanish rapper Kristina Maria and "Bomb The Blocks" featuring underground queen MC, Persia; coming exclusively online in January followed by the Om Records 12" vinyl with remixes by Princess Superstar, Zion I (Amp Live) and Speaker Junk in February!

Myspace Music Boogie Page...needs suggestions please read.

Hey Yall!

I have started a page on Myspace to promote Boogie Universal. This is different from the "group" page that already exists there, it will be less forum and more networking/advertising.
So I wanted to get some feedback on certain sections the page will showcase, and these are the catagories:
1. Bio
2. Members
3. Influences
4. Sounds like
5. Sum up the genre in 3 terms (such as Electronic, DnB, Jazz, Trance, Whatever)
Here is a link to the page, in its young and primitive stage...
www.myspace.com/boogieuniversalmusic
So if anyone has suggestions for these areas please post, thanks,
Carla

I'm so glad I made to this event - I met several wonderful people and the music was so very, very tasty (even now my poor credit card is quivering in a corner begging for mercy following my post event commute online record shopping shenanigans of dooooooooom).

It's not a bad drive either (meaningful scowl at whiney people who weren't up for the rockstar challenge - amateurs...you know who you are ;). Anyway, I survived and will definitely be back for more (parental weekends of freedom permitting). I do know the odd stuff or thing about things and stuff and am interested in sharing some of my energy, braincells and/or whatnot with your collective as needed (same grown-up-responsibility restrictions apply ;).

(and now, a power nap before admitting to the start of another day)

Much Love,

I'm super sick guys, sorry. I won't be able to Boogie tomorrow. I can't do the merch table as I said I would. I really haven't done much to organize it, we just have stickers and shirts. I do have a few friends who will most likely show up to help. It shouldn't be too difficult or stressful if a few people put a little time into it tomorrow.
Good luck guys

We finally got our permit for Cabin Fever! Yep, we're totally 100% legal & legit. It was a bit of a nerve-racking and expensive drawn-out experience, but it's done and we're good to go. Our capacity is 338 people--that should do the trick. We'll have to take the doors off the hinges and keep them off for the duration of the event. Hopefully with all of those bodies we'll keep warm enough. My biggest concern is noise issues with the doors always open. We may have to turn things down a bit and spread out the sound to reach everyone at a comfortable level. We'll see.

And yes, there will be one last meeting this Thursday the 1st at 6:00p.m.

See you then,

Discophile at Seesound Lounge in Seattle

Hello All!

I'm pleased to let everyone know I've got a great slot tomorrow night (Friday 2/9/07) at Seesound Lounge (http://seesoundlounge.com) in Seattle. I'm playing from 8pm to midnight. I will be spinning down-tempo / lounge style from 8pm to 10pm and then Some deep lush house music from 10pm to midnight. From midnight to 2am will be my partner in crime Karl Kamakahi playing more great house music. It's rare that I get to play to good crowds in Seattle like I get to at Festivals and the great parties in the more remote areas, so it would be awesome to see some friendly faces. Please come out, nod your head, engage in some enlightening conversation, and then get ready to dance your fool-asses off! Not sure how often I will get gigs like this, so your support would be greatly appreciated!!

Love, your discophile( aka.dj dave richards)

I'll be at the Burning Hamsters get together.
Here's the blurb from Lulabelle:

Alright troops. Here's a great reason to get together for a little face time and discussion. This is a reminder that tonight, Thursday 2/8, we will be meeting at Archer's Ale House in Fairhaven for a beverage and discussion about forming a Burning Man Regional here in Bellingham (or for those who are not townies, Whatcom/Skagit county).

Come out and share your thoughts and just hang out. Especially if you've been a naughty lurker here. And you know who you are. C'mon. It'll be fun! And the pasties are yummy.

6:30pm
p.s. That's pasty as in the savory pastry you dirty minded imps, not the nipple covers. Although I am easily persuaded to dress up for nearly any occasion

The Burning Hamsters are having a get together/meeting on that night to discuss the possibility of Bellingham becoming an officially recognized Burning Man regional community thingy.

If you're interested in such things and would like to speak your mind about the future of Bellingham's burner community, join us at Archer Ale house on Thursday the 8th at 6 or 6:30 p.m.

Cheers,
Erik

p.s. We'll return to our regularly scheduled Thursday Boogie meetings the following week. Please spread the word.

Let's still get together, but make it a less meeting and more hanging out/potluck kind of thing. Please spread the word, bring friends, bring a snack or just bring yourself. 6-9 p.m.
Cheers,

Boogie Reunion Tour 2007

Ok, it's been a little while since we've Boogied.

I at least have had enough rest and am ready to get some things shakin' so we can get some people shakin. We've got a KILLER new soundsystem that we absolutely MUST try out soon. I'm awaiting confirmation for the use of BASE CAMP for our next event (the log building on Holly, formerly OTCM). I'm leaning toward March 21st at this point, if not sooner. This is an amazing venue and an incredibly rare opportunity to get to use it again--we threw the Galactic Masqurede there November 21, 2003--the only party that's ever occured there in it's 40+ year history.

Start thinking about theme ideas. I was kind of thinking with the whole log cabin backcountry look, maybe "Brokeback Boogie"

........just kidding.

I was originally thinking just DJ's, a simple dance party (I know, I always say that and it never happens). I do think it could be and should be fairly low-stress. Probalby aim for around 300 people or so--the kind of Boogie we've done dozens of times. Maybe one band. I'd like to have The Trucks play. I guess I've got a soft spot for girl punk bands, but also I think some variety is about due.

Get the wheels turning....

Oh yeah, one other thing:

100% confirmed: Boogie Universal will present DJ Lorin (Bassnectar) at the Nightlight on April 10th!!!

I had the privilige of checking out this incredible creation the other night, inside of a beautiful black-lit yurt in Louisa's backyard. It's an incredible work of art that she's spent some four years building and perfecting.

There's a chance we may be able to have it installed at the Base Camp Boogie and/or Meltdown and/or Burning Man!

If so, we'll need a crew of volunteers to help transport it. I'll keep you posted.

Many people find Valentine's to be a bummer if they don't have a sweetie (or even if they do) including Yours Truly. Usually I'll head this off by treating myself or hanging with a beloved friend. This year I want to treat everyone and anyone to hugs. Heck, I'd like to start an outta control hugging epidemic right here in Bellingham and infect the planet with a potent new strain!

So I'm gonna do it. Care to join me? Pack a wolfable lunch if you must and just spend an hour or a few minutes on the 14th spreading love.
Downtown, Fairhaven, The Public Market come to mind. Any other suggestions? I'll keep you posted.

Hugs and Snugs;

Boogie's got the best sound in town!

Chelsea & I just got back from Mexico a couple of days ago. We had an outstanding 3 weeks of sunshine in paradise.
I've wasted no time diving right back into things. With almost no time for discussion (I called a few of the Boogie crew, all of wich eagerly encouraged me to go for it), I jumped on a deal that I just couldn't pass up.

The Boogie Universal ARTS Collective is now the proud owner of a 17,000 watt Yorksville Elite TX Soundsystem! This is the kind of gear used by orchestras, major stadium rock concerts, the biggest sound camps at Burning Man, and totally crazy small-town non-profit arts collectives (ok, maybe just one of those). It's huge, it's heavy, it's bullet proof. I got it for about the same amount of money that we spent on renting sound gear in the last 12 months--any cheaper and it would have been illegal.

We've now got mixing boards for live sound which will make it a lot easier to have more bands at our events.

Here's a complete listing with links to check out what we've got in store:

Here are some of the specs provided by Yorkville: TX9S power handling is 2,000 W RMS at 4 ohms; frequency range is 30 to 100 Hz.
After 15 years of equipping and engineering the orchestra, I have the mix down pretty good, and Iam quite familiar with what to expect from my own speaker system. I could not believe the first notes I heard from the Yorkville system. I was instantly impressed with the clarity of the TX speaker system.
Live amplification of the orchestra had never been better or clearer. The double basses were exact through the TX9S subs…

Now we've just gotta have a little party to try it out. Maybe call it "Deep House Warming" or something. Got any ideas? I was thinking maybe the radio museum again if people don't mind that it has to be over by midnight. If anyone's got a big house we could try that too....

Mutant Toy Workshop This Wednesday: 12/13 SantaCon is Coming!

SantaCon Bellingham is this coming Friday, 12/15! More details soon.

You all are invited to come to my house this Wednesday night, 12/13, to a Mutant Toy Workshop. 7pm-10pm.

Not sure what I'm talking about? http://tinyurl.com/y666hk

You bring glue guns, hacksaws, stuffed animals, weird small toys of all kinds, glitter, ribbons, trims of all manner. . .
I've got a big bag of weird toys I bought at the Goodwill buy-trash-by-the-pound store in Seattle in October. They are begging to become weirder and then handed out on Friday night at SantaCon Bellingham.

I'll have a few snacks, but you too can bring munchies and bevvies.

This is the perfect way to participate in SantaCon even if you aren't up for the public fuckery of Santa on Friday. Think of it as a craft circle with a twisted sense of humor. It's a good excuse to get together, make a mess in my kitchen, and have some laughs. We haven't had an all Hamster get together for a while, so puhleeeeeze come over! Especially if I haven't met you yet.

Sorry for the short notice. Santa is lazy this year. Oh, and the above linked SantaHammy website is sorely out of date, except that the dates posted for the various SantaCons are correct. Just no details posted for meet up spots. If you're browsing the site and can't find the details you want please tribe message me and I'll see if I can scare up some information for ya.

If'n you want to come over on Wednesday for Mutant Toys and don't have my coordinates or telephonic digits send me a private message on Tribe. I don't post that info publically, but I DO welcome making new friends.

The B.E.A.F. Boogie was a Wonderful night.

Hi all. Thanks to everyone who volunteered to make this happen, it was a SWEET night of dancing to great music, soaking up some luscious eye candy, all in a magnificent venue. Wow.

I didn't stop dancing all night except to walk around and gawk at the antique radio collections. I sure hope there can be more Boogie parties at the Museum of Radio and Electricity.

I'd help you all break down tomorrow but I have to work early in the a.m., luckily I can sleep on my office floor here in town and not have to brave the black ice on the drive out to the county.

I'm really looking foreward to dancing with you all again in the new year.

Peace....

It was very nice to be able to just go home after the party was over on Saturday night and not have to spend all night doing break down and clean-up. The time has come though to get it done. Today at 4:00pm (Tuesday 12/5) we'll be packing up and cleaning up. If a couple of people could come down and give me a hand I'd appreciate it. It should only take an hour or two.
Thanks!

Voted as one of the top 10 VJ's worldwide by UK's DJ Mag 2004, 2005, 2006, This year ranking #5. He is also an installation artist and his 3D, projection based, sculptural installations have been installed in numerous galleries worldwide. In 2006 he performed nightly in Torino Italy during the Winter Olympic Games with the A/V act Magnetic Poets. He has been a member of the live audiovisual act called Extra Sensory Projection since 2001 www.extrasensoryprojection.com and has recently ended a tour with Beck. In the Fall of 2006 VJ Culture performed at Fashion Week in NYC in addition to Macy's Passport Fashion shows (the largest in the Nation) in Los Angeles and San Francisco.

KJ Sawka

Seeing KJ Sawka on the drums is the only way to believe the hype. He can play the most complex of jungle, drum'n'bass and breakbeats utilizing no loops and no extended samples -only his two hands and two feet. Whereas some artists claim to be performing live drum'n'bass, live electronica, etc., it's more often than not a drummer playing alongside pre-programmed beats if there's a drummer at all; Sawka, however, can perform each and every 808 bass kick, snare slap, and compressed highhat tick himself, in real-time.

"Drew Smith, aka 'MUX', began his musical journey at a very young age - playing flute before joining his elementary school marching band, six years of classical piano lessons, eight years of guitar, performing and singing in rock bands in college, and finally being bitten by the electronic bug in 1995. When he discovered how perfectly the technology merged his two loves of music and computers, he immediately traded his best accoustic guitar for a pair of synthesizers - one analogue, one digital - and hasn't looked back since.

MUX music is driving and aggressive, hypnotic and complex, while moving, growing and changing with the attitude of the crowd. "

Diem

Professionally dj'ing for over 13 years, diem plays an impressive collection of beats and rhythms. Currently in Seattle, he has played throughout North America, and is about to go on tour in Costa Rica in early 2007. His sound he defines as "hardtribaldisco", a blend of tribal Latin rhythms, hard funk, house beats, breaks, and layered evil disco. Often seen wearing his trademark bunny ears, he is known for dancing behind the decks, pumping his fist, and often joining the crowd. Recent additions to his repertoire have been his playing of live PA performances as well as professional photography, recently featured on The Beehive’s latest EP.
Currently I am the regional contact for the Burning Man Project for the Seattle area, and am often found working on our regional event, Critical Massive. My site can be found at www.djdiem.com, and information on Critical Massive can be found at www.massiveburn.org.
n.
A collector of or specialist in phonograph
records.

Dave Richards (aka: discophile, DJ dave, DJ magnetic tape...) began collecting records at age 6 when his big brother gave him his collection of AC/DC records. A life long collector of all things recorded, and a DJ since '92 he has spent the last 10 years focusing his DJ energies on House Music and Down-Tempo Sets. Co-founder of the now defunkt Northwest Crew, Rebel Alliance Productions. Co-Founder of the Seattle based Collective, De La Creme Sound System. Half owner of northwest indie label, Clickpop Records. Owner of Bellingham record lovers heaven, Sonic Index. Performing with a true dedication to the music not the hype, discophile's sets are technically flawless, refreshingly eclectic, and pure dance floor energy. Oh yeah, and the crates are deep!

Hey there Boogiers,

I updated the poster (lots of cutting and pasting) with our new and improved line-up and the new hand-bills are scheduled to arrive any minute here at my place. If you'd like to help out the Boogie, please help us post and distribute these.
I've got a stash of them at The Bellingham Public Market with Wendy at Collections gift shop (Terra Organica on Cornwall, downtown). I'll also leave some on my porch for those of you that know where that is. I'll be heading out of town for a couple of days so won't have much chance to do any posting for this weekend. Next week I plan to hit it pretty hard with the handbills up at WWU, if anyone wants to help they'd be very welcomed.
Contact me if you need directions to either location to get the flyers.
Thanks!

BEAF Part 1

Bellingham Electronic Arts Festival Nov. 30th - Dec. 3rd - Part 1: History & Vision

Hey everyone. Wanted to tell you all about an event I'm helping organize.
The Bellingham Electronic Arts Festival
www.bellinghamelectronicartsfestival.com/

Some History:
BEAF was started by Nicholas Brittain Shaber in 2004 as a means of providing a focal event for the different sorts of electronic music (and arts) happening around Bellingham and the Northwest.

BEAF 2004 was held July 31 at the Pickford Dreamspace, a marathon event with 9 performing acts and 4 installations. Lots of folks helped Nic make it happen, as far as I know all on a volunteer basis. [I won't name everybody.] There was a beer garden, a coffee stand, and other booths from supporting orgs/businesses. Good local coverage and a good crowd.

BEAF 2005 was a wider-ranging two-day event (May 6-7) at the Dreamspace that featured an electropop show Friday night, an international electroacoustic music/video show Saturday afternoon, an experimental & DJ show Saturday evening, and one installation. Again lots of people put in long hours to make it work (esp. Nicholas). Crowds were supportive but not as big as we had hoped for.

Before Nicholas moved to Iceland he and a small group of BEAF-people decided it would be good to operate as a BEAF board, without official membership or titles but with roles based on expertise, and with a commitment to the event and to each other. So we've been meeting frequently to plan BEAF 2006 and it is coming together nicely.

Compared to previous years it's gonna be bigger and better: bigger acts, more days, more venues.

Another change this year is the direct involvement of Western. BEAF is still an independent entity, but we are having some campus events co-sponsored by the College of Fine & Perf. Arts. We are hoping that it makes a healthy town/campus connection, with town-folk and students going to shows in both locations. The Spark festival at the U. of Minnesota and around Minneapolis is a good model for this sort of thing, though much bigger than we're attempting at this point. spark.cla.umn.edu/index2.html

We have also tried to incorporate much that we learned from our friends at the Decibel festival in Seattle, and at many other events of this type (festivals seem to be springing up everywhere). We feel BEAF to be the right fit for our community, and possibly to offer things in a different way than other festivals. As we grow I think we all want to stick with Nicholas' vision, which seemed to be about building community and maintaining a support network for this sort of art to flourish in our town.

More information to follow in subsequent posts!
Please, please, please go to our web site to learn more about this event! Don't hesitate to contact me with questions. This event is very unique in combining a high calibre of artists, lecturers, and performers with an intimate setting.

Hey there,
What's Up Magazine was planning on sending someone to do a review of Flight, but that person got sick at the last minute and was unable to make it. They're looking for someone that isn't directly involved in organizing the event that would be willing to write something. If you're interested or know someone that is, contact me: uprivererik@gmail.com
Thanks!

Hey Everyone,
It's Wednesday and I'm still in a bit of a daze in the after-glow of Flight. In place of our regular weekly meeting, let's get together at my place on Thursday at 6:00 and have a little pot-luck, chill-out, and debrief.
Anyone that helped out, filled a volunteer shift, or was in any way involved, please come. Anyone that maybe wasn't involved but has some feedback, constructive criticism, or just wants to get involved in the future, please come.
Contact me if you need directions: uprivererik@gmail.com
No need to go extravagant or exessive for the potluck dishes--last time we had way more food than we needed. No sense making it a huge ordeal, just come on over.
Cheers and again, thank you all. We throw the best parties I've ever been to.
Erik

This is a call out for photographers & videographers. A couple of pros that have captured many of our great photos in the past will not be available for FLIGHT. We need somebody who would like to man (or woman) the Photo Booth for at least part of the night and somebody to capture some quality pics for the local newspapers (they're already requesting them).
If you know someone that would like to help with this, please get them in contact with me asap:

Anyone interested in getting some flight gear on and handing out handbills in Red square?
Wednesday at 1 pm and Thursday at 11:30 pm we will be meeting at Red Square to do just that. I'm thinking that we will be there for as long as there are people to hand out flyers to during the times when people get out of class for lunch and at the end of the day. Erik mentioned making some posterboard for the flyers so we can show those off as well. The more people we get out there, the better, even if you can only be there for a little bit.
Lets hope it doesnt rain!

By now I imagine most of you already have your tickets for FLIGHT, but have you made a reservation to save a seat for the 8:00 show with Dream Science Circus? You don't need a reservation to get in the building, but there are only 250 actual seats available for their main performance--over half of them are already reserved.
After you get your ticket at Sonic Index, the Bellingham Food Co-op or on-line at: http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/7096 or by calling 1-800-838-3006, then you can use your ticket number or confirmation number (for will-call tickets) to make a reservation at: www.dreamsciencecircus.com
See you Saturday!

Hey everbody,
Come join us for a fun afternoon of getting crafty. We'll be finishing up the big glowing eggs we started last week and repairing/making new big huge birds for The Nest. No special skills or artistic talent required.

This time we will not be meeting at my place but instead at Wendy's house:

Go out Lakeway.
Lakeway turns into Cable.
Follow Cable just past the Firs.
Turn Left on Austin. First house on the right.
Big Green house, big trees around it, long grey fence.
1204 Austin St. 2:00--6:00 or 7:00 ish

If you have room for riders or need a ride post it here. It's less than a 10 minute drive from downtown Bellingham.
