I recently took a quiet vacation to Germany and Switzerland, and am pleased to report I kept it very dull. I did not partake in sausages, beer or yodeling.

Were there any other exciting things that you didn't do?
Or dull things that you did do?
Or did you achieve exactly what you went for, no more, no less.

Ah, to be in Germany, now that January's there.
Let me know next time you go. I can recommend some excellent must-see shopping spots, some sleep-inducing architecture, and a wide array of museums and neighborhoods simply bursting with boredom.
Hope you got a chance to visit Lidl and Schlecker, my two all-time favorites.

I went to many a Lidl and Schlecker. Went to the zoo in Hannover where the animals were cold, and to the natural history museum Lausanne where all animals were stuffed. We also went to the Reptile Museum in Lausanne, but it was closed. Still the bus ride was nice.

I used to live in Germany so I know all the exciting places to avoid. Dull activities included 4 hour hikes through unpopulated snowy woods, wandering around town on Sundays, when nothing was open, and traveling via night trains so you aren't distracted from the conductor's monotone announcements by the beautiful scenery outside.

i understand how you feel, Joe. I, too, was transfixed by the dullness of a grey January European vacation.

But were all your trains on time?
I love a nice walk down the platform in the dark January evening to smoke a dozen cigarettes and decide which waiting fellow-passengers are best avoided, while waiting for the minute hand to change on the clock and inspecting the lids of the sorted trash containers.
My god, those Deutsche Bahn clocks. Did you know they have their own line of DB watches? I'm saving up for one so I can relive the experience every day. Such simple design, yet so elegant.

Today it is cloudy with occasional spots of rain. To top off the day,I may go to the Aldi here in town or perhaps venture further to the out of town Lidl....Aldi is much like Lidl.In some ways they are different, in others they are the same. Perhaps I need some adivce as to which I should go to....

Do you drive, or will you walk?

I used to drive a quirky French car but after 5 years I have now switched to a German one, which is most appropriate for trips to Lidl or Aldi.Perhaps one day it would be awfully dull to plan a bus trip to both in the same day.Using the bus probably will make it an entire day excursion.

                    Ooooh.
I vote for the bus ride and a valium. Or better yet, one for the ride there and one for the ride back. Then, of course, a nap.

My boyfriend's friend has an agitated cat the vet prescribed cat-valium for, and he unscrupulously scams it off his friend. Cat valium is even better than human valium. It's almost like feeling nothing at all... just a little bitty teeny weeny haze of ambivalence.

Then again, nothing beats driving alone in the rain. And you could probably operate an automobile on cat-valium if you put your mind to it.
