Good D& U tasks

topic posted Fri, October 19, 2007 - 2:13 AM by  Susie
In the last 2 weeks I have had the luck to be able to:

Unpack 2 suitcases and 2 travel bags after 2 weeks away. Isn't nice how it was all predicatbly the number two? Glad to report thaty we managed to go to Florida and NOT go to any major attractions but did have several forays to Walgreens.

Spend an hour on hold listening to muzak, to report that our cable tv was out of service. It is now fixed, so have to avoid the too stimulating programs now. Perhaps we should have stuck with the 5 basic channels.

Got to sort a huge pile of invoices into day, month and year order. Since I am too efficient that task ended all too quickly.

What D & U tasks have you undertaken latlely?

    I emptied the wastepaper basket.
I commuted to work three days in a row while reading William Gilmore Simm's The Yemassee, Volume 1 (an hour and a half each way).
I created folders for the piles on my desk using a very chic and (something you'll all appreciate) beige wall-mounted magazine rack. I also mounted the rack.
I had two conversations about German immigration policies.
I read my mother's emails and responded to her questions carefully and thoughtfully.

I hope you didn't strain anything in the process.

Sunday after my plane had to be in " a holding pattern" for 25 minutes before landing, due to snow on the runway, the luggage didn't come out of the carousel for , oddly 25 minutes also. I thought this would be a good time to empty my mind and just stare at the empty carousel, but all the others complaining and jostling for space had to go and ruin it. However, there was the unpacking to still look forward to.

Times like that, I wander out to an unused carousel and stare at the unclaimed luggage. I like to imagine where those people have gone, and what must they be doing without their luggage.

It is important to carefully consider D&U tasks.Perhaps you could draw an intricate chart showing priority and estimated time of completion. On the other hand , you could do the task or tasks first then make a report.

I find that concentrating on tasks that have no priority whatsoever keeps things the least interesting.

For example, I enjoy having candles lit while I work. Unfortunately, some candles burn faster than others, leaving large empty carcases of wax, which I then break into pieces with my fingers and use to supplement the still-burning candles, thus increasing their lifespan and, ultimately, their utility for me.
Of course, sometimes one adds too much wax to a candle and risks having it go out.
It is certainly best to keep an eye on the candles.
It is pleasurable, even, to keep a constant eye on the candles, simply watching the wax melt for hours while doing no work at all.

As I said, sometimes tasks with the lowest levels of utility are the most satisfyingly dull.

Sometimes I listen to music while I do this task. Sometimes I just sit smoking cigarettes and occassionally getting up to pee.
