Re: I am moving
Wed, June 27, 2007 - 12:19 AMUsually i would advocate staying put, remaining stuck in your rut and so on.However if making a move means going form a place where there's alot of excitement to avoid to a place where the danger of that is significantly decreased, then that is a good dull safe option.

Re: I am moving
Thu, June 28, 2007 - 9:44 AMI am feeling an emotional sense of loss. (Much too stimulating for me)
Portland is quite dull. Therefore, I support your choice. You must make regular chronicled reports of the weather for us. -

Be prepared to enjoy all those 79 shades of gray available in the pallette of a northwestern sunset. -

Re: I am moving
Thu, July 5, 2007 - 4:40 PMI just wish I could be there to wrap all your wine glasses in newspaper and number the boxes and put the numbers on a spread sheet with copious details of the contents.
8 moves, and I've never broken so much as a saucer. -

Re: I am moving
Fri, July 6, 2007 - 6:03 PMGreat. I'm free till October. I'd been planning on just sitting around and picking my nose till then, but this is much better. -
-
Re: I am moving
Sun, July 8, 2007 - 6:39 PMWell, nose picking, while staring blankly at the floor could be much duller.
I can't decide if I want to pack everything alphabeticly or by color.
Everything beginning with A in a box etc
or all blue items together, etc
any ideas? -
-
This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.
Re: I am moving
Mon, July 9, 2007 - 10:18 AMWell, those are nice ideas.
But really, to be practical, you should pack things by room, and put the things you'll need first on top. Which makes things easy, because the stuff you don't use often, you can already start packing now, and use the stuff you use most until the last minute!
Then, just letter and number the boxes (eg. Kitchen 1, 2, 3= K1, K2, K3.) and make a spreadsheet to help you remember. Carefully itemize everything, and you'll have no problems (and that way, it doesn't really matter how you organize things, anyway. You could even list in the spreadsheet where, exactly, in the box, each item is located, top, bottom, or middle.
But the really fun part is going to the UPS store and choosing bubble wrap and tape. -
-
Re: I am moving
Mon, July 9, 2007 - 8:37 PMI went to a place called Box City last week. I bought boxes, bubble wrap, tape shooters, and a big roll of craft paper to carfully wrap all the breakables without getting print from news papers all over my hands, or who ever helps me, their hands.
I've begun packing up my albums, books, and many cds. All your suggestions are very good and practicle ones.
Like I said...you ARE hired. -

Re: I am moving
Tue, July 10, 2007 - 1:07 PMGreat. So just let me know when you have my ticket reserved. I could use some time without weather.
Oh. Please - if you think of it - I'd like the vegetarian meal for the plane. Pasta or rice and a roll with butter would be ideal. -

Thu, July 12, 2007 - 1:28 AMJaine, we should meet up when I get there. I'll be in Sellwood. Have you been to the Ugly mug? -
-
Re: I am moving
Mon, July 16, 2007 - 8:39 PMnope. i have not been to the ugly mug. i live in the woodstock area (Southeast), so my guess is that's a tad out of my territory. as long as i can make the adventure over there as dull as possible, it should be fine tho. -
-
Re: I am moving
Thu, July 19, 2007 - 1:23 AMyou should take the bus then. its usually pretty dull, the drone of the motor, the squeek of the breaks as it makes each and every stop. YOu could count how many stops there are to make it extra dull. -

Re: I am moving
Mon, August 27, 2007 - 1:44 AMsixty five boring boxes, all labeled with numbers. what room they belong in, and their contents.
Removed
from my apartment, loaded on a truck, and taken away.
When I get to Portland, I will get to see them all again, count them, and unpack them. How very dull.
I know you all wish you could be there to help.
I will feel your dull presence I am sure and I cut the tape of each box and lift all the many many many things I have taken with me, from each box. -
-
Re: I am moving
Mon, August 27, 2007 - 1:44 PMOh... I'm feeling almost beige with envy at the thought of you cutting through the tape on all those boxes in an empty room, then folding them neatly to be recycled. -

Re: I am moving
Mon, September 3, 2007 - 6:17 AMIn a passive non-exciting way, i enjoy the faint aroma that new from the box shop cardboard boxes emit when assembled. -
-
Re: I am moving
Mon, September 3, 2007 - 6:48 AMSure, sure, boxes are good.
But let's talk about tape some more. Can we? -
-
Re: I am moving
Mon, September 3, 2007 - 2:09 PMI mean, there's the smell, but there's also the sheer power in having a roll of that 3-inch wide clear tape on a hand-held roller. The control. You run it over every surface you want - twice, if you like - and then, with a flip of the wrist, it's cut.
And all the while (even in the midst of the headiest of odors coming off the tape), you think: whoever carries this package is going to KNOW - now there's a man who knows how to seal a box.
And your heart goes out to the poor box, battered, perhaps, at the end of the voyage the corners are going to be flattened and the sides ripped to hell - but the seams where you taped them are damned well going to still be in perfect shape.
And then... you run out of tape and pull off the roll, and the cardboard support is so thick it takes two fingers and a thumb to mash it down flat for the recycling. And at the end, it always takes off that little triangle of the cardboard support with the last piece of tape... which is when you know it's time for a nice cold glass of tap water. -
-
Re: I am moving
Tue, September 4, 2007 - 1:04 AMYes twice is always best, it never hurts to be absolutely sure it is securely sealed.I find that the best available from a standard stationary shop is just perfect. I was once given an industrial dispenser that came complete with not clear tape, but with much stronger beige-brown tape. Although it was good from a security standpoint, in the end it actually exceeded my requirements.Yes , it is possible for somthing to do the job too well. In the end, it was relegated to the garage and the bog standard handheld, with the wide clear tape reigns supreme. -

Re: I am moving
Mon, September 10, 2007 - 9:32 PMI'm not sure which is more D&U...packing, or unpacking.
With packing you have the anticipation of what is to come, along with time pressures of getting it all done on time.
Once you are moved and unpacking, you can set your own pace, but it can be a bit exciting to see all your stuff again in a new setting.
Which do you find duller?
I find it fun to peel the tape off of each box very slowly and carefully, then adding it to a tape ball, and watching it grow in diameter. I like unwrapping each item so as not to rip the paper. Then, carefully folding each piece of paper wrapped around each item, matching the corners of each piece so as to fold it perfectly, corner to corner 3 times. Then I stack all the pieces tidely to be used by some one else that may be moving. -
-
Re: I am moving
Tue, September 11, 2007 - 12:03 AMOh, unpacking is definitely duller for me.
It's just like Christmas, but with no surprises and you're alone and sober with less flattering lighting. What could be more perfect than that?
I suggest, once you find your stereo, slip in the Goldberg Variations to move things along. -
-
Re: I am moving
Mon, October 15, 2007 - 12:14 PMI found my cd player, but now it only works sometimes.
Other times it just makes a clicking noise. Its more irritating than dull.
It's raining. -
-
Re: I am moving
Fri, October 19, 2007 - 1:25 AMSounds soothing.
Enjoy the weather! -

Re: I am moving
Thu, November 1, 2007 - 1:42 AMso far the weather is quite enjoyable.
its a little too exciting watching the leaves go all psychodelic.
the beauty is hurting my eyes.
what should I do?
We had a rat crawl into our heating vent and die, so everytime we would turn on the heater the smell was...well... you can imagine.
So far never a dull moment here.
What shall I do?
Hiking used to be boring, but here, well, its another story. Giant waterfalls and moss everywhere.
What was I thinking when I moved here.
If only I could get myself to just stay in bed, but no, I have to go into the world and be constantly bombarded by smiley faces, rainbows and sunshine. Yes sunshine. Where is the dull dark dreary rain I was promised? -
-
Re: I am moving
Fri, November 2, 2007 - 2:12 AMit will come! one day, i promise, it will start raining and not stop until may. -

Re: I am moving
Fri, November 2, 2007 - 9:20 AMI can hardly wait. I enjoy counting the days between rainfalls. I have a Rain Diary. In it I keep tally on when it rained, for how long, and how many inches we received.
