I thought perhaps I might start a new thread dedicated to the word "perhaps," after noticing that my using it twice in the same sentence in another thread dramatically increased the dullness of said sentence's tone.
In this thread, perhaps we might all endeavor to use the word "perhaps" at least once in each and every sentence (or perhaps even more often), while focusing discussion on the word itself, but perhaps without limiting ourselves solely to said subject, leaving the framework of our discussion open to other conjunctions.

Re: Perhaps
Thu, February 21, 2008 - 12:21 AMI find the evasive quality of 'perhaps' to be quite soothing. Perhaps that's because perhaps does not denote any strong sentiment one way or the other, perhaps because perhaps,in its' very non-commital way,is perhaps a valuable tool to those of us who are true to the D&U ethics. -

Re: Perhaps
Fri, February 22, 2008 - 1:46 AMnice, but could, perhaps, be one-dulled (as opposed to one-upped), perhaps not by me.

Re: Perhaps
Fri, February 22, 2008 - 1:57 AMSoothing and non-commital, indeed ... in fact, there's perhaps a potential for bit of I-don't-give-a-damn-ness mixed in with "perhaps"'s polite aloofness. And rather than "maybe," which includes possibility with actual being itself, "perhaps" doesn't directly suggest tangible being at all.
Perhaps we might ought to include an etymology of the word:
"1528, formed from M.E. per, par "by, through" + plural of hap "chance" (see happen), on model of peradventure, perchance, etc. which now have been superseded by this word."
"Perchance," however, sounds perhaps a bit too risky for me. "Perhaps" would seem to be the lite version. Perhaps it is wiser, after all, not to leave anything to chance. -

Re: Perhaps
Sat, February 23, 2008 - 7:36 AMOoh! I rather like "peradventure."
Perhaps I'll throw it in when I write my next blog. Or perhaps not.
What, then, about "mayhaps"? -
-
Re: Perhaps
Mon, February 25, 2008 - 9:53 AMI am frightened of the word "peradventure". -

Re: Perhaps
Tue, February 26, 2008 - 7:15 PMhmm..... maybe, perchance, mayhaps, peradventure... um, perhaps not.
perhaps, 'perhaps' is just right.

Re: Perhaps
Wed, February 27, 2008 - 10:43 PManything that precedes something makes me nervous
e.g. precum -

This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.
Re: Perhaps
Thu, February 28, 2008 - 3:46 AMIndeed, but perhaps another of "perhaps"'s most endearing qualities is that it need not necessarily precede a phrase, but may also follow, unlike precum ... perhaps.

Re: Perhaps
Thu, February 28, 2008 - 10:06 AMSo the takeaway is that the word needs to be "perhaps" but not "prehaps."

Mon, March 3, 2008 - 5:16 PMjaine,
thank you for the observation. however, i think "smiley" is the incorrect term for it.
:| ..... i guess it would just be a "bored faced" as opposed to "happy/smiley face".
besides, i must be in accordance to D&U policy.
thanks.

Re: Perhaps
Wed, March 5, 2008 - 12:44 AMPerhaps Remy has a point.
And perhaps we could move this conversation back toward its original topic.
There's something so patrician about "perhaps." -

Re: Perhaps
Fri, March 7, 2008 - 3:12 AMhmm..... perhaps you're right JM.
no hijacking of threads should be allowed.
perhaps we should assign an anti-thread-hijacking- monitor.
some volunteers perhaps?
oh....
