HEY BUDDY, IS THIS YOUR SANDER VITREUS?
Whose Fish?

BY ALBERT EINSTEIN (MAYBE)

This brainteaser, reportedly written by Einstein is difficult and Einstein said that 98% of the people in the world could not figure it out. Which percentage are you in?

There are five houses in a row in different colors. In each house lives a person with a different nationality. The five owners drink a different drink, smoke a different brand of cigar and keep a different pet, one of which is a Walleye Pike.

The question is-- who owns the fish?

Hints:
1. The Brit lives in the red house.
2. The Swede keeps dogs as pets.
3. The Dane drinks tea.
4. The green house is on the left of the white house.
5. The green house owner drinks coffee.
6. The person who smokes Pall Malls keeps birds.
7. The owner of the yellow house smokes Dunhills.
8. The man living in the house right in the center drinks milk.
9. The man who smokes Blends lives next to the one who keeps cats.
10. The Norwegian lives in the first house.
11. The man who keeps horses lives next to the one who smokes Dunhills.
12. The owner who smokes Bluemasters drinks beer.
13. The German smokes Princes.
14. The Norwegian lives next to the blue house.
15. The man who smokes Blends has a neighbor who drinks water.
There are no tricks, pure logic will get you the correct answer. And yes, there is enough information to arrive at the one and only correct answer.

If you get the correct answer, congratulations, you are one of the exclusive group of 121,348,731 people in the world who can.

Send your correct answer and/or complaints to Rev. Joe Borfo on this tribe. Include the phrase "show your work" with the rules for entry but then we figured that any dork who would Google a puzzle like this in order to win would have to live with self-loathing and guilt for the rest of their life and that would far outweigh the value of the prize package. Yes, we are in fact talking to you, Remy X.

In the Spring, it rains a lot. The rain is good for growing plants which, being sexuated (I believe it may have been Linneus who first proved this, but am unsure), have flowers. Not to infer that it's only because of increased rain that plants begin to grow in the spring. I suspect many of them grow all year long in ways that are less perceptible to the naked eye. I also don't mean that it's only because of the rain itself that plants grow (more perceptibly). Indeed, there are other factors, which would include increased levels of sunlight and heat.
For many, Spring also raises spirits, as the need for heavy clothing is reduced, making limbs less weighty and (in many cultures and geographic regions, though not all) exposing areas of skin, which likely has an effect on heightened sexual interest. Those suffering from seasonal affective disorder may also find periods of relief - it might be argued that, in a sense, this is a collective effect, particularly among those in urban areas, as mirror neurons possibly react to those in the area whose seasonal affective disorder shows signs of remittance.
I have a feeling Spring isn't capitalized in English, however. My apologies, if this is the case. I am in no way making an argument that it ought to be, if it is not. I simply wanted to post a short essay in honor of a season to which much human poetry and song has been devoted, and to counteract the frequent verbosity and sappiness of the latter with my own, duller version. Please feel free to share your own thoughts on this season, or, if you will, to comment on my choice of capitalization.

I rested assured that it would reappear at the bottom of the pile once I did my laundry but it didn't! So chances are that now the sock troll living under my washing machine has it. Titles like "My brilliant wedding", "The devil loves Prada", "My sweet pink poodle", whatever, it all made me roll my eyes and turn away in ennui. So many movies on Wedding Dreams, I could not believe it. You'd think, history and society has moved retrograde by 60 years. Could irt be the economy? "Let's all get married, that will be one way to pay the gas bills and get a few free emals and dresses thrown in"? Weddings promoted with images of pony tails, poodles on leashes, white teeth and phony happy smiles. Ugh! No wonder so many people are so shallow if they live on a daily diet of this stuff. I also read that the average cinema goer is no older than 14 or 15, so this is the clientele the movie studios are aiming at now.
I finally manage to dig up DVD with two actresses full of of character and depth: Merryll Streep and Vanessa Redgrave, appearing together in one movie! Both greying and wrinkled now, you can still guess their former beauty. Feeling sheepishly old fashioned and outdated as a video customer I went to the cashiers.
Then I moved on to the bookstore. Again, the same scenario.Glossy paperback transcriptions of "Sex and the city", "Confessions of a shopaholic", side by side with the shelf for the male customer which had only politics and economy and such, followed by teenager and kids books. Then, lucky a second time, my gaze fell on a name that rang a very loud bell: Marian Keyes! I went ahead and confirmed it- yes, she is the author of that book that I read under my desk during university test days and that I forgot and had to retrieve by pulling it out from under the table with a puzzled professor looking on in amazement who was teaching the next period after me...that embarrassing title had been "Last chance saloon". Her new novel is called something equally ominous:"This charming man". "his can only mean bad news", i thought, when I read the summary, overly charming men are always trouble, followed by heartache... Ok, so four women all still or formerly madly in love with the same man who is now getting married to one of them. Well, that scenario sounds familiar enough after Turkey, i thought to myself and bought it, in happy antifcipation of my comfy evening with the spring chill and my feet up...

I found this in the Japan Times today and when I came to the paragraph at the bottom of the article where they describe American conservatives calling the Lebanese-American beauty queen a "terrorist in a bikini", "Don't let her exterior fool you, she is still a Muslim and therefore an activist, blablabla.." I thought:"Now I understand how the mind of some people on tribe works".
And of course they all jumped on her pole dancing photos from three years ago instead of publishing her message about inner beauty and whateer else she tried to tell the press.

Miss USA Rima Fakih 'pride' of hometown in Lebanon

AFP/HO – Rima Fakih reacts after being crowned Miss USA 2010 at the conclusion of the LIVE NBC telecast from the … by Jihad Siqlawi Jihad Siqlawi – Tue May 18, 9:52 am ET
SRIFA, Lebanon (AFP) – Newly-crowned Miss USA Rima Fakih is the pride of her native village, with residents saying the Lebanese-American not only brought honour to southern Lebanon but also offered a different image of Shiite Muslims often stereotyped as radicals.

"She is an honour to us, a honour to all of southern Lebanon," her paternal aunt Afifa Fakih Said told AFP in Srifa, the beauty queen's hometown.

Residents of the southern village watched 24-year-old Rima compete in three categories -- swimsuit, evening gown and interview -- before winning the Miss USA title on Sunday.

Proudly showing off her niece's photograph on the front page of local newspapers, her aunt Afifa offered baklava pastries to wellwishers pouring in to her home.

A supersized framed photograph of Rima, whose family is Shiite Muslim, earlier winning the Miss Michigan crown hangs in Afifa's living room.

"We are so often described as terrorists and killers, but we Shiites love life and beauty -- and mainly the beauty of the soul, which is what is so special about Rima," said the veiled 62-year-old, who speaks English and French fluently.

"In this family, we are open to all religions," she said. "We have no political affiliation to anyone."

Srifa falls in an area largely controlled by Shiite militant group Hezbollah, which is blacklisted as a terrorist group by Washington.

In an interview with Lebanese television on Tuesday morning, Hezbollah MP Hassan Fadlallah was asked his opinion on the new Miss USA.

"The criteria through which we evaluate women are different from those of the west," he said.

Rima Fakih, who may represent the United States in the Miss Universe pageant later this year, emigrated from Srifa to the United States when she was seven years old.

She attended a Catholic school in New York until 2003, when her family moved to Michigan.

She went on to earn a college degree in economics from the University of Michigan and was a resident of Dearborn, which is home to a large Arab-American community, prior to her crowning as Miss USA.

Fakih proudly told pageant organisers that her family celebrates both Muslim and Christian holidays.

Her sister Rana, who lives in Lebanon with her husband and children, told AFP the Fakih family was proud of their dual heritage.

"Rima called me from the podium after her win in tears of happiness to tell me she was elected Miss USA," said the 35-year-old. "Our father, who was there with her, kept saying she was an honour for south Lebanon.

"We are both Lebanese and American. In the United States no one asks us if we are Sunni or Shiite Muslims, we are all under the US law," she added.

"In our home, there is none of the fanaticism that exists in some Lebanese households."

Despite her dark, cascading waves and toned body, the new Miss USA has come under fire by right-wing bloggers, who have dubbed her a "terrorist in a bikini."

"Don?t let her lack of a headscarf and her donning a bikini in public fool you. Miss Michigan USA, Rimah (sic) Fakih is a Muslim activist and propagandist extraordinaire," wrote conservative political commentator Debbie Schlussel in her blog.

"It?s a sad day in America but a very predictable one, given the politically correct, Islamo-pandering climate in which we?re mired," wrote Schlussel, who slammed Fakih as a "Hezbollah-supporting Shiite Muslim."

Fakih sparked further controversy on Monday when pictures of her competing in a pole dancing contest surfaced on the Internet, although she apparently did not undress in the all-girls competition.

But others are rallying in support of the young beauty queen.

"It is sad what we have come to in this country when we can't come together and agree that Rima Fakih is just incredibly hot," tweeted "Degringolade."

The entire garden is now no longer shady and overgrown (small gardens get shady very quickly), but instead we are now knee deep in garden clippings, all over everything. It starts at the place where you put your foot on the ground after stepping off the (also tiny) porch. Branches, twigs, leaves, cut weeds, you name it. Then I went to the DYI store cum garden center to buy those special sturdy garden garbage bags that do not get torn to shreds in two minutes by the twigs and thorns.
And when I get there, the garden center is gone. Poof, disappeared, the whole store, walled up, just an empty parking lot. There will be a new store by the end of July, a man told me.
Now what? I believe , this was the only store in the whole area that sold them. I cannot travel far, as we are out of a car, and thebags are too heavy to carry them through the public transport system. Twenty large sacks made of sturdy plastic sheeting on the subway? Impossible.
If I pile up all those branches and set them on fire, people are gonna think I want to burn the house down. We are not alone here. Besides, they might not burn, this is fresh green. What should I do? Put in two weeks and chop everything into small size garbage by hand, then try to take it out as usual trash? Any better ideas?
I am not a member of the "bad advice on any subject" tribe, so I am asking you.
I thought, spending the weekend just clipping and weeding would be boring enough, and now this...

"Please tell the bank to change your name from "Asutorito" to "Asutoritsudo" and your last name should not end in an "o with a long stroke" but rather in an "ou".
Obediently I went to my bank, was led upstairs to a special section, and asked the teller to change my first name to "Asutoritsudo". I expplained the problem with the document at the social office in the city hall. "Yes, but do you have a document with you that can certify that your real name is 'Asutoritsudo'?" "No, I don't", I said, "because my real name is not written in Japanese, my name is Astrid and not any of this, but every Japanese transcribes it any way he wants because Japanese cannot pronounce it anyway." "Please show me your alien registration card", she said. We found that on my card it said that me, the alien, was called Asutorido which was different again, both from the bank and from what the social insurance had on me. "I can only change your name to Asutorido because this is what your ID says", said the teller. "Can't you go to the city hall and ask them to change your name in their document to Asutorido so that it will be same as here in the bank?" "I'd rather not", I replied, "the man in that office is unbelievably uptight, last time he told me that my alien registration card is not an ID, and made me get him a copy from the family register to identify myself. Would you mind if I call them and you talk to them yourself and explain the problem here at the bank?" So we worked it out on my mobile phone, and the bank teller finally agreed to change my first name to "Asutorido", while the person in the city hall agreed to compare their document which said "Asutoritsudo" to their copy of the family register that I had produced to identify myself since they would not accept my ID card as an ID and confirm that it was ok to change my name on their document to Asutorido, also, so that now they would be able to transfer the money to my bank account which said "Astrid" in alphabet on the front page but this did not count because it was not written in Japanese. Whew! Now it will only be a matter of days, I hope, until the money arrives...

So, I have been learning to clean. Things. Cleaning things is fun. I don't get very far in a single bout, however. I prefer to take little tasks, one day at a time.

I'm very good at vaccumning, I find. I only vaccumn a corner at a time, but I'm very, very careful to go over every surface. Little things collect in gaps in the parquet or under the mouldings. Sometimes I think I find things that have been there for a long, long time, perhaps even before we moved in, or maybe even before I was born. After I finish a corner, I generally stop, and leave the vaccumn cleaner where I stopped, so it will be handy for when I decide to move on the next time. This bothers my flatmate. But it's sort of like a pool-cleaning robot, just in slow motion.

This week, I also ironed two shirts, all by myself. If anyone has advice on this, I would love to hear it. I think I remember hearing something about doing the sleeves either first, or last. But how long should it take? I spent half an hour, and had results that were markedly better than when I started. I would not wear the shirts I ironed to work, but I like to hang them in my closet and look at them and remind myself that they do look better than when they came out of the washing machine.

The hypothesis presented herein says that abdominal hair is mainly responsible for the accumulation of navel lint, which, therefore, this is a typically male phenomenon. The abdominal hair collects fibers from cotton shirts and directs them into the navel where they are compacted to a felt-like matter. The most abundant individual mass of a piece of lint was found to be between 1.20 and 1.29 mg (n=503). However, due to several much larger pieces, the average mass was 1.82 mg in this three year study. When the abdominal hair is shaved, no more lint is collected. "

From the materials and methods: "The author first observed the accumulation of navel fluff in his early 20s. Despite thorough body hygiene including a daily morning shower, the navel filled with lint over the day. The author collected 503 pieces of navel fluff since approximately March 2005 with a total weight of almost 1 g... ...In order to investigate the role of the abdominal hair, the author also shaved his belly for this study."

Hard facts on a soft matter! In their popular scientific book (Leyner M, Goldberg B. Why do men have nipples - hundreds of questions you'd only ask a doctor after your third martini. New York: Three Rivers Press; 2005), Leyner and Goldberg raised the question why "some belly buttons collect so much lint". They were, however, not able to come up with a satisfactory answer. Old T-shirts or dress shirts produce less navel fuzz than brand new T-shirts. Using elemental analysis, it could be shown that cotton lint contains a certain amount of foreign material, supposedly cutaneous scales, fat or proteins. Incidentally, lint might thus fulfill a cleaning function for the navel.

Yesterday, my remote control stopped working. It was a pretty new one. I went to the store and got another one of the exact same model. Then I got a $5 coffee at the coffee shop. I went home and opened the remote. I typed in the Samsung code and started flipping channels. About ten minutes later, it stopped working. Today, I returned that remote to the store and got a different, slightly more expensive, one. Then I got a $5 coffee at the coffee shop. I went home and tried to program the new remote. It had ten possible three-digit codes. I had to push Code Search, then TV, then the three-digit code, then Power, until the TV turned off. I tried all the combinations, but the TV never turned off. Then I tried the manual code search, as per the instructions. To do this, I had to press Code Search, then TV, then Power repeatedly until the TV shut off. The instruction booklet warned me that I might have to push Power up to 200 times before I would find the right code. I pushed Power 200 times, but the TV didn't turn off. I repeated this process two more times (400 more Power pushes). Then I tried the list of ten codes twice more. It didn't work. I took the new remote back to the store. The clerk wanted me to try another one, but I decided not to. I went to Safeway and bought a whole can of hot chocolate powder for $5 so that I could make my own cafe mochas at home and I would not have to pay $5 per coffee. I have to change the channel by getting up and changing it on the TV. Some of the channels aren't programmed into the TV, so I can't watch them anymore.

1) Do all my shopping at the supermarket between noon and 2pm.
2) Repeat myself over and over.
3) Drive about aimlessly at 25ph in the evening rush hour.
5) Have a permanent doctors appointment for 5.30pm every work day.
6) Repeat myself over and over.
7) Have my hair cut on Saturday mornings.
8) Talk in stage whispers about the fashions of young 'uns (Does he know his underwear is showing - must she show her belly?)
It used to come (sigh) in cardboard boxes, and inside each box were four neatly packaged, perfectly identical, perfectly rectangular, perfectly white blocks of the most tasteless perch. It was lovely to bake it and to eat perfectly rectangular fish... but it was even nicer to spend a quarter of an hour watching them thaw in a saucepan of cheap white wine.
It was nice to have an excuse to drink half the wine while waiting.
It was nice to hack the thawed pieces to bits for a bouillabaise.
It was nice serving the dish without anyone but me knowing that an hour ago, the fish had been perfectly rectangular.

Second, perhaps, only to eating straight from a can of tuna. Mmm.

I'm leaning toward Furthermore, but perhaps just because it's longer. Can you believe it's just three sylables? Phonetically, it's the equal of Chicago, Mexico, Hannover, or India, all of which look much less cumbersome.

It's the word that announces you're in for more than you probably want (or really need) to hear by its very structure.
And that your rhetorical point, although already acheived, has more weight behind it that you were too lazy to organize into your argument, and will now tack on ad-hoc, even though by this time your argument is, technically, already complete. In short, announcing the word "furthermore" is the linguistic equivalent of forcing someone to read endnotes and the bibliography. Which, seen in that light, I'm sure gives us all pause to think.

So make it "furthermore" for me, friends.
After all, why ever say "and" again, when you can say "furthermore?"

Driver's quick thinking prevents head-on crash on GG Bridge
John Cote, Chronicle Staff Writer

Wednesday, November 28, 2007

(11-27) 22:25 PST San Francisco -- A Mill Valley man prevented a potentially serious crash on the Golden Gate Bridge today by using his pickup truck to guide a sport utility vehicle - in which the driver had gone unconcious - away from oncoming traffic, the California Highway Patrol said.

A 62-year-old Tiburon woman driving south over the bridge at 6:50 a.m. slumped over her steering wheel after suffering a medical condition from which she later died.

John Beatty, a 50-year-old electrician who was driving to work across the bridge as he's done almost every weekday for the past 30 years came up behind the Jeep Grand Cherokee stopped in the second lane from the center divide.

"I nearly hit it, and the car behind me nearly hit me," Beatty said. "All of the sudden the vehicle in front of me starts to drive to the left very slowly."

The Jeep was headed toward oncoming traffic.

"You never know what you're going to do when something like that happens," Beatty said. "I didn't think about it. I just did it."

Beatty drove up along side the car, saw the woman slumped over the wheel and acted quickly. He maneuvered his Ford F350 pickup in front of her vehicle to block it from moving into the oncoming cars.

"I let her hit me," Beatty said.

Then - with the Jeep still moving - Beatty used his truck to guide it across two lanes of traffic to the right hand curb as other cars passed, he said.

"They were going crazy all around us, but as soon as they saw what I was doing they left me a big hole to do this maneuver," Beatty said. "Everybody just kind of stopped to let me slowly pull off to the right to park her."

The CHP credited Beatty with selfless act that prevented a potentially "extremely serious" headon collision on the bridge.

Beatty said he called the CHP and pounded on the woman's windows.

But she was unconscious and the doors were locked, Beatty said.

A CHP officer arrived on the scene and smashed a window to unlock the woman's door, and a paramedic found a pulse and began CPR, Beatty said.

The woman was taken to California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco, where she later was pronounced dead, authorities said.

"When you think about all the lawsuits and liability that goes on today, I probably wouldn't have done it," Beatty said. "But you don't think. I saw she was going into oncoming traffic, and it would have been a horrible accident."

Beatty said that afterward, he pulled off into a parking lot to calm down for an hour as his adrenaline raced.

"I lead a kind of low-key life. Excitement's not my bag," he said.
Have you noticed how expensive time has become? We used to get an hour for a quarter outside the store when it first opened. Now we get 15 minutes.
I added up the parking meters just in our block. There were 32. If each meter collects a dollar an hour per meter, and the meters charge from 10am till 10 pm each day, how much would the city make per block in one week? We will assume they are constantly being used, just because we can.

it was, in fact, the second 4am session in a row cleaning my bathroom. one of my housemates exploded in the sink, and the toilet, and well, all over everything. it was almost exciting. to avert unnecessary stimulation, i made the task as boring and arguous as possible using t-shirt scraps and one sponge and few paper towels (not the brightly colored brand kind; the boring costco kind). an hour or so later, the sink drained again and all befowling materials were flushed or trashed. i'm giving myself a saintly DU badge for the cleaning so diligently.
I think i'm going to reward myself with a Swiffer. Should I get the wet or the dry kind?
