toenail clippers and had to resort to using an emery board. I forgot how much I like useing an emery board on my toenails. It's ok on my fingernails but even more fun on my toenails. Toenails are soo thick, and you have to sand and sand and sand and sand away. Actually I like talking about it as much as I like doing it.
I thank myself for sharing.

What with trying not to watch"A slow work day" and also trying to stay away from even thinking about scrabble, I have found what just might be a suitable past-time. It is a group that has infrequent get togethers and best of all they local, so i don't have too far to somewhere too interesting. On the other hadn, i could just look at their website for a hobby:
http://www.lpmcc.net/gallery/photos_056.htm

As always , there are pros and cons to either idea- what do you think?

French food

After 10 years in France, now that I've left it, I find myself missing not the pastries, or the sauces, or the chocolate, but ...
the frozen fish.
It used to come (sigh) in cardboard boxes, and inside each box were four neatly packaged, perfectly identical, perfectly rectangular, perfectly white blocks of the most tasteless perch. It was lovely to bake it and to eat perfectly rectangular fish... but it was even nicer to spend a quarter of an hour watching them thaw in a saucepan of cheap white wine.
It was nice to have an excuse to drink half the wine while waiting.
It was nice to hack the thawed pieces to bits for a bouillabaise.
It was nice serving the dish without anyone but me knowing that an hour ago, the fish had been perfectly rectangular.

Second, perhaps, only to eating straight from a can of tuna. Mmm.

Moreover and Furthermore

Further to our discussion of dull words.
I'm having a terrible time between these two, deciding which is less interesting. Which is quicker to induce sighs when it appears at the opening of a sentence?
I'm leaning toward Furthermore, but perhaps just because it's longer. Can you believe it's just three sylables? Phonetically, it's the equal of Chicago, Mexico, Hannover, or India, all of which look much less cumbersome.

It's the word that announces you're in for more than you probably want (or really need) to hear by its very structure.
And that your rhetorical point, although already acheived, has more weight behind it that you were too lazy to organize into your argument, and will now tack on ad-hoc, even though by this time your argument is, technically, already complete. In short, announcing the word "furthermore" is the linguistic equivalent of forcing someone to read endnotes and the bibliography. Which, seen in that light, I'm sure gives us all pause to think.

So make it "furthermore" for me, friends.
After all, why ever say "and" again, when you can say "furthermore?"

Easter got me thinking about the color of eggs. As a child I thought all eggs were white. Then came easter, and the practice of dying eggs garishly. Later my mother began to purchase brown eggs. It was all very distressing. Now I that I buy my own eggs, they're brown, as this is what my store sells. I've become accustomed to the color, I suppose.

I thought perhaps I might start a new thread dedicated to the word "perhaps," after noticing that my using it twice in the same sentence in another thread dramatically increased the dullness of said sentence's tone.

In this thread, perhaps we might all endeavor to use the word "perhaps" at least once in each and every sentence (or perhaps even more often), while focusing discussion on the word itself, but perhaps without limiting ourselves solely to said subject, leaving the framework of our discussion open to other conjunctions.

My Remote Stopped Working

Yesterday, my remote control stopped working. It was a pretty new one. I went to the store and got another one of the exact same model. Then I got a $5 coffee at the coffee shop. I went home and opened the remote. I typed in the Samsung code and started flipping channels. About ten minutes later, it stopped working. Today, I returned that remote to the store and got a different, slightly more expensive, one. Then I got a $5 coffee at the coffee shop. I went home and tried to program the new remote. It had ten possible three-digit codes. I had to push Code Search, then TV, then the three-digit code, then Power, until the TV turned off. I tried all the combinations, but the TV never turned off. Then I tried the manual code search, as per the instructions. To do this, I had to press Code Search, then TV, then Power repeatedly until the TV shut off. The instruction booklet warned me that I might have to push Power up to 200 times before I would find the right code. I pushed Power 200 times, but the TV didn't turn off. I repeated this process two more times (400 more Power pushes). Then I tried the list of ten codes twice more. It didn't work. I took the new remote back to the store. The clerk wanted me to try another one, but I decided not to. I went to Safeway and bought a whole can of hot chocolate powder for $5 so that I could make my own cafe mochas at home and I would not have to pay $5 per coffee. I have to change the channel by getting up and changing it on the TV. Some of the channels aren't programmed into the TV, so I can't watch them anymore.

And they're dull!
Please excuse the exclamation point.
We just spent a week in a ranch house in North Carolina, and he found it all fabulous, the enormous fridge, the giiant cars, the five pound sirloin steaks and homemade pesto and wireless everything... he should have been bored... but wasn't! He actually preferred it to New York.
I was left feeling.... dull. Next to my mother, in pearls, serving meat loaf.
He amused himself endlessly with the "poetry" magnets on the refridgerator, and the maggot-infested stuffed animals in the rec room.
Help!
How can I convince my boyfriend I'm interesting again when he's in love with a bunch of redneck hoodlums and now he thinks I'm a snob just because I ignored the security service man at the airport who sias we can't park and smoke at the same time when loading luggage?!
I'm more interesting than my family, damnit. But he loves them, and not me!

Now that the razzamatazz(to be avoided!) of the "holiday season "is over, I hope each and every one of you will do all in your power to stay true to the D & U ethos in the coming year..Hopefully some of you even managed to maintain them even during all the festivities, even if it meant hiding. . For my part, I managed to leave a bar before midnight on New Years eve in order to be home before all the merriment & excitement broke out.

I have taken to looking daily in Craig's list, in the free section. I find it quite interesting what people will give away. Today someone was giving away a jar of pickles. They even had a picture. I love it when people include pictures. Sometimes I will spend a great deal of time just looking at every picture of every free item there is.
There was someone giving away manure today also, but no picture very disappointed.
But there are several people giving away free dirt. And their photos do keep me amused.
I have included on particularly nice one for your enjoyment.
Have a very dull thanksgiving.

The following story is a message we would all do well to embrace- the last 2 sentences are the perfect D & U motto to live by, even in the face of unbrindled high drama and heroics. Please read this carefully:

Driver's quick thinking prevents head-on crash on GG Bridge
John Cote, Chronicle Staff Writer

Wednesday, November 28, 2007

(11-27) 22:25 PST San Francisco -- A Mill Valley man prevented a potentially serious crash on the Golden Gate Bridge today by using his pickup truck to guide a sport utility vehicle - in which the driver had gone unconcious - away from oncoming traffic, the California Highway Patrol said.

A 62-year-old Tiburon woman driving south over the bridge at 6:50 a.m. slumped over her steering wheel after suffering a medical condition from which she later died.

John Beatty, a 50-year-old electrician who was driving to work across the bridge as he's done almost every weekday for the past 30 years came up behind the Jeep Grand Cherokee stopped in the second lane from the center divide.

"I nearly hit it, and the car behind me nearly hit me," Beatty said. "All of the sudden the vehicle in front of me starts to drive to the left very slowly."

The Jeep was headed toward oncoming traffic.

"You never know what you're going to do when something like that happens," Beatty said. "I didn't think about it. I just did it."

Beatty drove up along side the car, saw the woman slumped over the wheel and acted quickly. He maneuvered his Ford F350 pickup in front of her vehicle to block it from moving into the oncoming cars.

"I let her hit me," Beatty said.

Then - with the Jeep still moving - Beatty used his truck to guide it across two lanes of traffic to the right hand curb as other cars passed, he said.

"They were going crazy all around us, but as soon as they saw what I was doing they left me a big hole to do this maneuver," Beatty said. "Everybody just kind of stopped to let me slowly pull off to the right to park her."

The CHP credited Beatty with selfless act that prevented a potentially "extremely serious" headon collision on the bridge.

Beatty said he called the CHP and pounded on the woman's windows.

But she was unconscious and the doors were locked, Beatty said.

A CHP officer arrived on the scene and smashed a window to unlock the woman's door, and a paramedic found a pulse and began CPR, Beatty said.

The woman was taken to California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco, where she later was pronounced dead, authorities said.

"When you think about all the lawsuits and liability that goes on today, I probably wouldn't have done it," Beatty said. "But you don't think. I saw she was going into oncoming traffic, and it would have been a horrible accident."

Beatty said that afterward, he pulled off into a parking lot to calm down for an hour as his adrenaline raced.

"I lead a kind of low-key life. Excitement's not my bag," he said.

In the last 2 weeks I have had the luck to be able to:

Unpack 2 suitcases and 2 travel bags after 2 weeks away. Isn't nice how it was all predicatbly the number two? Glad to report thaty we managed to go to Florida and NOT go to any major attractions but did have several forays to Walgreens.

Spend an hour on hold listening to muzak, to report that our cable tv was out of service. It is now fixed, so have to avoid the too stimulating programs now. Perhaps we should have stuck with the 5 basic channels.

Got to sort a huge pile of invoices into day, month and year order. Since I am too efficient that task ended all too quickly.

What D & U tasks have you undertaken latlely?

Perhaps it's not too early to start making arrangements to attend the next one. In fact I think Dayton could be a D & U goldmine. It would probably make a suitable locale for a convention.

Things were a little slow today at the artists co-op I work at, so I started thinking about the parking meters outside the store.
Have you noticed how expensive time has become? We used to get an hour for a quarter outside the store when it first opened. Now we get 15 minutes.
I added up the parking meters just in our block. There were 32. If each meter collects a dollar an hour per meter, and the meters charge from 10am till 10 pm each day, how much would the city make per block in one week? We will assume they are constantly being used, just because we can.

alphabetizing

I have a long list that has to be alphabetized.
Naturally, I'd love to get to work on it right away, but I have too much tribing to do, and also I need to find something for my assistant to do - she's bored out of her mind and has taken to locking herself in her office with Gothic novels. I approve of this, naturally, but I do feel my role as her supervisor should include seeing that she profit from learning the joys of alphabetizing.
However, when I presented her with this work, she seemed uninterested.
How can I inspire her to appreciate the joy of alphabetization? Frankly, I think she might need something to make it seem more interesting.

i heart lysol

after a painfully exciting evening, i had the most astoundingly boring time cleaning the grout on my bathroom tiles. they are white now. lysol disenfectant cleaner foams and makes a pleasant crackling fizzy sound. i'll attack the shower tonight if i have time. 4am cleaning sessions are such a way to dull oneself into sleepiness. i think you all should try. it will quickly take away the excitement of family stuff during the holidays.

it was, in fact, the second 4am session in a row cleaning my bathroom. one of my housemates exploded in the sink, and the toilet, and well, all over everything. it was almost exciting. to avert unnecessary stimulation, i made the task as boring and arguous as possible using t-shirt scraps and one sponge and few paper towels (not the brightly colored brand kind; the boring costco kind). an hour or so later, the sink drained again and all befowling materials were flushed or trashed. i'm giving myself a saintly DU badge for the cleaning so diligently.
I think i'm going to reward myself with a Swiffer. Should I get the wet or the dry kind?

Dull job, but not worth it

My boss is a micro-manager, the likes of which I have never ever seen. Yesterday she asked that before a meeting, when I am seeting up the room with coffee and tea, to also raise all the chairs to a normal level, so she and her guests don't have to be bothered to do so.

Does dullness also have to include such subserviance? I would be willing to do this sort of crap if I were working in the entertainment industry, because the pay more than makes up for it. We all have our price. But here, not so much. Time for a new job, despite the fact that this job is gloriously dull.

For the holidays I went to Brazil. But don't worry. It wasn't the samba dancing, non-stop carnival you are imagining. I spent two weeks at my parents beach house, on a remote beach near the amazon jungle. Our parents slept their days and nights away, and my sister and I weren't allowed to take the car. We took lots of long quiet walks on a desolate beach, watched DVDs we rought from home, and occasionally we played dominos. Sometimes we'd hang out in the pool time each other to see who could hold her breath the longest. After eight days I left the house for the first time, for a trip to the super market. It wasn't that super.

I almost took a picture of a coconut in the sand, as there were many, but I thought one such photo here was enough.

You know, if you make a listing on Tribe, and then go to your regularly scheduled tribes to browse, it stays stuck on "Listings" until you switch it back to posts.

This was the first place I came back to after making my listing today.
And I was sure the moderator had moved ALL our threads off the tribe and left a notice for a carpool from Portland to Berkeley in their place.
I was extremely impressed.

The new main picture on this tribe is anything but dull and uninteresting.
Look closely, friends.

In fact, with the angle at which those Scrabble pieces are set, I would even say it suggests an almost frolicksome, devil-may-care atmosphere.
And not only to us members, but to anyone visiting this site.
The choice of a main picture is something that concerns us all - and, indeed, I believe at this point we SHOULD be concerned.
Nothing good will come of this new mania for scrabble and tea. Mark my words.
We are heading into dangerous waters, ye dull & uninteresting.

I don't know if someone is unhappy about my new modoratorship and are trying to undermine my authority, or if they just don't like the photos chosen, but both the photos that were the main photos today were deleted by the original poster. Perhaps this is an attempt to force me to constantly update the photos. I don't cotton to this sort of underhanded pressure. The constant change of scenery s a bit distracting and stimulating, so I chose one of my own posts, that it might not need to be changed for a while.

I am not sure whose pictures were being deleted, but I wish they'd stop. The disappearance of photos is unsettling, to say the least.

Please note, that I had to consider the risks involved in posting this- should I really open this can of worms again? Will possible agitation caused by dismay that it is not I nor a member of D&U that won result in veering far from the safe , boring state we all strive for ? Will I , yet again, be enabling those who are weak?

However, i find it impossible to keep to myself- just promise that you'll not allow the image of a former weightlifter winning the title to cause too much stimulation:

Former weightlifter wins national Scrabble contest

A former weightlifter was crowned National Scrabble Champion 2006 after winning the final held at a central London hotel. Jake Jacobs, from Ely, Cambridgeshire, has been playing competitive Scrabble since 1997 and won the accolade despite having to retire briefly in 2002 after a heart attack. Mr Jacobs, 57, who was contesting his first national championships final, beat 32-year-old former civil servant Christian Brown. During the 1980s Mr Jacobs taught sports stars such as shotputter Geoff Capes and swimmer David Wilkie how to lift weights for the TV programme Superstars.

A very dull article on How to play scrabble

This is a very dull piece on how to play scrabble. I couldn't bear to read it, or else I might really hit bottom, but perhaps JM could benefit from it. Why, there'e even a section about how to play it online, to boot.

How to play Scrabble

Damian Eadie
Tuesday October 17, 2006
The Guardian

With the advent of modern technology, there is no longer any need to harass members of your family for a game of Scrabble when there is nothing on television. The internet is a brilliant way of playing someone and you can guarantee that at any time of the day, be it very early or after midnight, you are always just a few clicks of a mouse away from finding an opponent.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There are several advantages to playing on the computer, aside from the fact that you don't need the physical presence of another person in order to get your fix. Other less obvious advantages are that the computer works out all the scores for you both; it randomly chooses your letters, which means you don't have to shake that green bag around; it can tile track; it can disallow illegal words; and it can't see you taking a crafty peek at that dictionary to check a word you're not too sure of.
Another benefit of internet Scrabble is that you are not limited to learning useful new words from just a few people, as you would be if you played at home on a board. Players line up from all over the world, and the chances are that in every game, you'll see something played that you haven't seen before, so your own knowledge is broadened as you go along. You can also ask to be matched against players of similar ability, which helps to ensure more competitive games.

A good place to play online is isc.ro, which has thousands of members, is easy to use and is a regular hang-out for some of Britain's top players.

Having said all that, if you don't know your broadband from a brass band, there are more than 300 registered Scrabble clubs around Britain, where you can take on people in the flesh. They welcome new members of all ages, and no matter where you live, you're never too far away from a night on the tiles.

There are also regular tournaments held up and down the land. Although these are competitive, they are highly sociable, and all the players are categorised into groups according to their Scrabble rating. As with chess, your ratings go up the more you win, so you are then matched against players of a similar rating. If you then get walloped a few times, it'll drop down, and so on and so forth.

As well as cash prizes, tournaments offer trophies and kudos - and, of course, the shared hard-luck stories in the tea interval.

If you'd like to join a Scrabble club, and have internet access, log on to absp.org.uk and check out the club situated nearest you, or write for information to: Anne Ramsay, ABSP, 8 Glen Clova Place, Kirkcaldy, Fife, KY2 6UL.

Hey, any Darcs users here?

I'm building my first darcs repository. I built it and ran a build on the project, then discovered that 'whatsnew' reported that the .jar I built in my lib directory was new. I decided that I didn't want the jar file in the repository, so I modified the _darcs/prefs/d&u file to include

(^|/)lib($|/)

I ran whatsnew again, but it still reports
{binary ./lib/hyfo.jar}

What a I missing here?
made me wonder- does scrabble really cause people to hit bottom or is it a way of helping yourself to bigger better things?

Also, is it ethical to pay inmates toplay scrabble?

I stayed up late to finish my resume. I've never done one before. I started it about 2 weeks ago. My friend came over to help me. We ended up playing scrabble for 2 hours, and working on the resume for about 10 minutes.
The next night I worked on it some more, but decided scrabble should always be a part of doing a resume, so I spent about an hour playing, then about 2 minutes on the resume.
Well, that happened every night for the past two weeks, a ratio of about 2hrs of scrabble to about 10 minutes of resume, and tonight I finally finished the resume. But I've also improved a lot in scrabble, which is even more important.

When I was teaching my painting class today, I was watching someone mix a pallette of colors over and over and over and over for 3 hours. It made me think how boring it would be to have a camera on her for people to watch. I felt guilty, almost selfish to not be sharing this experience with others. Then I had this other thought of what if, what if there was a reality show like the ones where they trick people, but instead on this show, they would bore people, while they were being filmed and watched by others. Like waiting in a waiting room for the dentist, but the dentist never comes and everyone in the office kind of dissapears, so there's no one to even complain to. Or you have people standing in line at a bank, and the line never gets any shorter. And you see how long people will still stand in it.

Off I went in search of my very own computer after 2 years of having joint custody of only one. As a true D&Uer searching for a brand-spankin' new PC, it's needless to say(almost profane to say), I was excited. Since frugality is one of my attributes, I hunted down the sales. Finally, I came to find out that Office Depot was practically giving away computer systems.

Arriving at the store I come to find that they are having a massive blowout and that I could buy a laptop and a PC desktop system for under the regular price of either one of them. Being a subscriber to the Consumer Reports magazine, I knew this was too good to pass up. I bought both.

My laptop is great. My first laptop ever. Can't go anywhere without it. I do everything with it, email, music, surf the net, even some work at times. It satisfies me.

Since March of this year, a complete Compaq PC desktop system has been sitting in my apartment in it's original packaging... unopened. It just seems so much work to take it all out, make room on my desk, hook it all up. I just don't know if I can output all that effort.

Besides, I've actually been putting it to good use unopened. I just need a good table cover and coasters.
Director: Gus Van Sant
It's a story about two guys that get lost in the desert and walk around to try and find their way out. Yep, that's the film, 2 hours of walking in the desert. The height of dullness. Highly recommended.

Sometime in the future, at a date as-to-yet -be decided,, but probably before the commencement of 2007, I think we should have a D&U "everybody make a tin foil hat event". This would give everyone a time consuming& dull task. To making it even more boring, to boot, those who are able ,would be encouraged to post photos of themselves wearing their hats.Any suggestion(s) as to how to make this a better than boring event are welcome.

I play scrabble with myself

Online scrabble scares me. So I have devised a way to play scrabble against myself using the "right eye vs. left eye" method.

To do so: Only use your dominant eye. (right or left*) Your dominant eye is dependent upon which side eye is controlled by your concious self that you Identify with. See note below on how to discover your dominant eye. Your "inner opponent" uses the opposing eye. This means when it's your inner opponent's turn to play you must close your dominant eye. And your opponent eye closes when your dominant self is at work.

This can be confusing because many times either eye will accidentally peek and the message will be sent through the brain to the wrong side of the consiousness and make the game rather useless, at which point I scramble up all the letters and try to play all over again. (I've never succesffuly have been able to beat myself yet)

I encourage you to challenge yourselves, discover your dominant eyes and inner opponent, and have at it!

Please, tell me the results.

Regards,
-Joe Borfo

*Notes:
Discover Your Dominant Eye

1. Select an object that is a few feet away from you.
2. Stare at the object and then point to the object using your index finger.
3. When your eyes are focused on the object and not on your finger, you will see two blurry fingers in your line of sight.
4. Now, close one eye and then close the other eye.
You will notice that with one of your eyes closed, your index finger will point exactly at the object, however, when the other eye is closed, your finger will point at an area slightly shifted to the side of the object. The eye withwhich you see your index finger pointing exactly at the object is your "Dominant Eye."

Which eye is your dominant eye? ( Mine is the Left eye - I mean, my dominant self corresponds with it that is...)

This is the link to the "Waiting For Godot: The Interactive Adventure" game.

You don't have to be familiar with the story to be able to play this game. However, one thing you might want to be aware of is the rules of the game. You will have two characters to choose from (Vladimir or Estragon) that you can control. The basic format of the game is something like a mix between a "Choose Your Own Adventure" book and Myst (well almost, I have to worry about bandwith and server space). You have a first person view of a static picture that has various "hotspots" on it, which are hyperlinked to other pictures that are hyperlinked to others, and so on. Have fun.

"Waiting For Godot: The Interactive Adventure" sometimes takes a little while to load. This is normal and can be attributed to the slow, overloaded, Geocities servers. Oh well, it's free. Please be patient and give it a few minutes, the graphics can take a while to load too.

Lets go!

------
'Waiting For Godot: The Interactive Adventure' is a revolutionary experience in online gaming. Never before have I ever seen a game that so perfectly captures the essence of its inspiration."

Flavorlessness

A friend of mine recently told me that in Japan, flavorlessness is actually considered a flavor, just like sour or sweet.

Suzie's idea of lists gave the an idea I was sure at least some of you will find boring.
Let's all work together to make a list of things that are (or could be) flavorless.

I'll start:

Unsalted rice cakes.

Help- how do I convey how dull and uninteresting I really am?

A week from today, I wil be in Poland, to attend our friends 25th Anniversary party. This party will take place in a small village outside Gdansk. The venue will be a restaurant , where all 40 guests will be seated at one long table. My dilemna is this: none of the other guests speak English, nor I Polish.Further, word has come that news of my attendance has caused much consternation in the village, as they have never actually seen an American and now one will be at the party. So, how I can I let them all know, there is no need for alarm, I am as dull as nails, so therefore no threat? Sorry to say i have to go, it's all booked and paid for: going to a party is always risky.

I am sure everyone will join me when I extend a dull meek welcomem to our new moderator. I hope we can look forward to no new exciting changes. I suspect Thumbleweed is up to being our leade in all matters d & u , however, a bit of assurance that things will roll along in the same, predictable manner, might be in order
