well that was a goddamn huge disappointment!
i had so anticipated performing with all of you and seeing the bits and pieces come together.
moving past my seething anger at crimson's decision, i'd like to thank everyone for all the work they put into this: all the spinners in the video submission for getting everything together so quickly. chad and steph for letting us film at their house, feeding us, and giving us bug spray to fend off the mosquitoes. all the performers who had to learn the choreography from brief notes and online videos. jt for motivating the group, keeping everything running smoothly, getting us into the circle, and caring first about our safety on the night of the burn. we should have been able to give our performance and show that expectant audience what all our hard work produced. tho it was unknown/unacknowledged at burning man, i know how much time went into this and i want to thank everyone for giving it!

cheers,
m

Rehearsal Video Posting Now

Howdy folks. You've all gotten the email, this is just a storage thread for the URL and for the choreography. I'll update this thread when I have the final URL.

It's not done YouTube processing yet, but I think the URL will be: http://www.youtube.com/v/XPzDdEPeirM

For the STAFF ROUTINE, most choreography is on 8 counts.
- mirrored weaves; 8 counts
- mirrored "2 beats" (figure 8s); 8 counts
- turning and swapping sides; 8 counts; to outside hand cradle
- front scoop into rotor; leg-stall reverse on 3 count; inside bounce on 6; outside bounce on 7; up on 8; 8 count total
- syncopated "gandalf" (helicopter to turns); 6 beats (syncopated = "follower starts on the 3 count, finishes on 8")
- leader BTB weave; R hand; 8 beats - follower joins on 5 and stops at 8
- pinwheel leader; R hand; 8 beats - follower joins on 5 and stops at 8
- leader stops, follower continues - contact staff
- leader shows annoyance, follower "remembers" the routine
- merge
- partner forward shotguns x4
- turn to Left; hand cradles in R hand at finish
- chain reaction move: (1) RTW - (2) PW - (1) PW - (2) PW - (1) RTW
- turn to "doubles" pose (facing forward) then isolation revolve
- iso flow "doubles" revolve
- rightward spin while moving to align with audience
- close to back
- lean
- outside shotguns
- exit Stage Right

POI ROUTINE is entirely in 8 counts. You can see the choreography pretty simply. Count it out, it helps. There is a merge from both side of the stage, then a series of transitions (unison moves) and solos (background doing simple pendulums). There is a fair amount of blocking that needs to be understood to make sure everyone's moving the correct directions. :)

What I have:
2ish minutes of non-contact-staff routine choreographed for 2 people (to music... for creation's sake. i know we won't have it for the actual performance)
none of the *moves* i choreographed are hard. the piece focuses more on movement around the 'stage', interaction between the 2 spinners, and punctuation.
What I want:
someone in the boston area to work with.
let's get together, i can teach you what i have, with your input we can quickly edit the kinks out of it, practice, and then find a date to film it.

i'll also point out here that i'm leaving boston on august 7th, so (unless you're in texarkana or oakland) you won't see me until burningman. i need to know the final act *before august 7th*, so let's not lose our motivation as soon as the video is finished, and get our assembling and polishing out of the way early. ...which will leave more practice time. which is good.
cheers,
m

Boston Conclave: MEETING THIS MONDAY

I have sent a version of this email to people who have communicated solid intent. If you **recieved** an email from me, you are all set! If not, read the below and SEND ME A MESSAGE letting me know how you want to participate!

====

Howdy Conclave Folks! Read to the bottom to find out the MEETING TIME. (Okay, it's this Monday at SpinJam.)

Looking at the positively committed people, I'm so thrilled at what an awesome group of people we have, coming from all over the world. WildFire and the openness of the Boston scene really has created a dispersed and beautiful global community of interconnected awesomeness.

That said, it causes a problem of organization. We have a great core of about 12 people who live in the Boston area and can manage to come together to get some choreography and a video made. I'd like to make that happen ASAP, starting with these local folks, because the other 12 performers who DON'T live in Boston (like Rovo, Jen Steele, Kali, Wish, and others) are awesome and we want to be with them in the circle... but they won't be here to help before the Deadline.

Deadline for Video: June 30. That means a video of us doing some of our choreography and a lot of good spinning, filmed and edited together. By me, I guess, unless someone else wants to edit video. :)

My vision for this year's Conclave focuses some on PARTNER dynamics, some on big group spinning choreography, and a whole lot on having a good time and not stressing ourselves out. I'd like to get the basics of what we're going to WORK ON FOR FILMING figured out immediately - which means starting this MONDAY, JUNE 2.

We'll be meeting at the BU SPIN JAM space, Monday, June 2, @ 8:00. I'd like to sit aside after folks have had a chance to spin and chat, and work out a plan of action. We have LESS THAN TWO WEEKS before WildFire, and I know how busy everyone is. Let's get some basics set, schedule times for breakout groups to practice, a meeting for one walkthrough, and a few filming dates. I'd like to have some footage shot before WildFire, and some after.

ACTION ITEMS:
1) if you're in town, please come to SPIN JAM (call me if you don't know where it is)
2) if you're out of town, relax and know that we'll get it taken care of - just email me and tell me you're still in
3) bring your ideas and your enthusiasm for a few weeks!

Email or call with any questions or concerns... Love you all!

-JT

P.S.: You lovely safeties... you're off the hook for over a month, after which point we'll run a few safety trainings and have you guys show up to help with the live fire practices. Thanks!

Hey everyone. The deadline for submitting the conclave information is MARCH 1st. I would be happy to help anyone looking to continue the Boston Conclave, but a few folks are going to need to step on up and be shin/assistant shin (ie lead this thing). Leading the conclave can be one extreeme of having full artistic and directive control or the other of just creating a space for others to lead and create their own performance. What ever style you might want to bring, you have to get on the ball NOW. Send me a PM if you want the address to send information to. If someone wants to lead this, please post here. We don't want three potential leaders all submitting Boston Conclave requests (unless folks want 3 Boston conclaves....). If you aren't familar with any of these roles just ask. What they are currently asking for is:

DEADLINE - MARCH 1, 2008
please send another email with as much of the following information:

I have posted to Crimson on the first step, which is saying that:
A) There will be a Boston Conclave - I'm calling it Boston Fire Family because I want to, and I love you.
B) There will be a Shin (me)
C) There will be people performing (you)

I included the names of all those who had contacted me stating that you wanted to be a part of my conclave group and that you were going to BM. So many awesome people from last year, and so many new folks from MA/CT who are going out for the first time!

There are first timers and veterans in this group, and among the veterans some who haven't been a part of a big choreographed performance. So if you are part of Boston Conclave 2008, this is an opportunity... ask your questions! I'll gladly answer as best as I can, and chances are someone else has probably got the same question you do.

I'll start:
1) WHAT'S OUR THEME/CHOREOGRAPHY?
- Great Question. No answer. Last year I wanted to do a Native American storytelling cycle, until Roger got me spun up about Prometheus. Then Coryn volunteered to design and sew costumes... and different people volunteered to choreograph their own sections, and then all of a sudden we had an awesome performance.
- I'll probably plan and choreograph more in advance this year, and I'd love to include stilting (stilt building materials already on hand) to get the fire up higher for part of the show... but outside of that it's still wide open.

2) WHAT CAN I DO?
- Good Question. What **can** you do? Whatever that is, I'm pretty sure I could use the help - just send me an email first. If you want to design and make costumes, AWESOME. If you want to build a 12-foot-tall Articulated Spider Puppet with a fire bowl on its back, QUADRUPLE AWESOME. Whatever - this early in the planning we can incorporate just about anything you build.

3) DOES THIS COST MONEY?
- I didn't charge anyone last year. I passed the hat afterwards asking for donations, and got $40... which ain't CLOSE to what was spent on fabrics and fuel. Burning Man is Expensive, and I don't want to make it unnecessarily moreso. However, I may institute some kind of $10 or $20 dues. Considering that everyone in the Conclave has gotten something like $100 off their event tickets in years past, I don't think it's a stretch.

So, what's your questions?

Fire! Tomorrow!

I have been told that the MassArt iron pour is tomorrow at 7, and that if I want to spin fire, I should just show up with fuel, duvy and tools. I am not 100% sure about this, I'm gonna investigate further in an hour or so, but since it's such short notice I wanted to give you guys a heads up. So far, it's just me and a fire-breather from my school. But we want more! So bring fuel, bring duvy, bring a fire extinguisher if you have one, dress safely (no frilly shit, no synthetic hair, no feather boas *ahem*).

I'll let you guys know if I find out anything else.

CONCLAVE: We're In!

The update is: congratulations, and welcome to the Burning Man Fire Conclave!!! Big shoutout to Basil who edited the video, and to all of you people who have contributed your energy so far.

Here's the thing: there's LOTS to be done between now and BurningTruck load-in. Have YOU thought of a way you'd like to help create something awesome? We're accepted into the Great Circle - now it's all the fun of creating a spectacle that pleases us and our audience of awesomeness!

Due to intervening events in the rest of their lives, we've had a few people who had stepped up to create cool stuff step aside. This includes the Assistant Shin (I'm the Shin) and the Lead Choreographer. Do you want to be able to look around in 50 days (just that many!) and say "Hells yes, I made this happen"?

I don't want to overstate this, so I'll just say that being in Conclave means being surrounded by the COOLEST STUFF EVER SEEN ON PLANET EARTH. (Like flaming bullwhip crackers wearing lingerie on stilts while hooping - which I actually saw out there last year between the flaming drumline corps and the gigantic flaming doubledutch jumproping. I am not making this up.) I really like being able to contribute to the general level of awesome, so I'll be putting energy into that... and today, that means by encouraging you - yes you, Conclavalier, to step up and create something cool!

"But how, JT?" Easy! Decide exactly what it is you want to do, and DO IT. Um, and you could email me about it sometime or give me a call to let me know what you're doing, which would allow me to coordinate it with what other people are doing. Cause that way when you both have the same idea about building remote control flying saucers with propane accumulators on the bottom, you'll be able to work together to make something even more spectacular.

TRIBERS: this is a good place to, you know, POST stuff and get excited and build momentum. I totally support that. Who's excited? Who's interested in coming to a Pants Party this Sunday afternoon?

Hi all,
I was your friendly perimeter ranger for the burn this year. I had to look out for my friends Jeff and Michelle who were two of your awesome fire safeties. I'm wondering if anyone got photos of the performance? Primarily because I didn't get to see much of it (rangers tend to keep eyes outward toward the crowd) and also because I got no pics of me rangering this year.
Peace,

Hi all,

I was a burning man virgin two weeks ago, but no longer - and WOW does that feel good! I was completely entranced and overflowing with gratitude to all the fire-spinners I saw, and the incredible gift of beauty they gave me, and I want to learn how to give back. Is there any way for a total beginner to learn how to fire-spin in Boston?

So I think I'll be busing it up to Boston on the China on Monday the 20th of August. Seeing as how I'm in the Boston Fire Family for Burning Man 2007, I figure I should finally make it up there and try to sync up with people and get plugged in BEFORE I touch down on the Playa. Do you guys still meet on Wednesdays? Can someone give me details on when/where is Monday night poi practice? Are people into a relatively short notice Alien workshop? If so where's a good space to hold it? Who has crash space for me? So many questions, so little time!

The update is, there is no update! I still have no word from Burning Man about whether or not we've been accepted as a group into Conclave, nor about tickets... so for all those waiting... please don't wait actively, and know that you'll hear me shouting joyously as soon as I know!

For tonight... tonight is usually Conclave Practice on Cambridge Commons from 6:30 to 8:30... and you're welcome to gather there, as cool hoopers also tend to be there. However, I will NOT be there tonight. Sorry for the late notice - I have a Family issue that needs my immediate attention and will not be in Harvard Square tonight.

Have fun, and I'll be in touch later on!

Regular Meeting Time Established: WEDNESDAYS!

This will happen each Wednesday... so show up sometime soon! I will update this post with reminders.

We are going to be holding a get-together creative session for the Boston Conclave group this Wednesday, June 13, in the Cambridge Commons, at 6:30.

If you want to go to Burning Man, or MIGHT want to go to Burning Man, and would like to hang out and spin and refine plans for the performance, it is NOT too late to join us! Post a reply, give a call, or just show up! We'd love to have you there.

Cambridge Commons is the green space just north-ish of Harvard Square (off Mass Ave) near the Sheraton Commander Hotel. I will be in the park at the southish end near the cannons spinning my staff - working on my propellers into the Matrix!

Walk on up and join me! If you'd like more info, call me at 617 797 1398. See you there!

2007 Script Concept: Prometheus

Okay - so here's what a lot of people have been waiting for. Here's the concept that has been worked on and floated around, for all to see and comment on. What can you do?

* Read it!
* Comment on it!
* Suggest a change!
* Claim a role!
* Volunteer somehow!

Hey, you wanna make a mask or design a costume or a new toy/tool or just always wanted to be Pallas Athena? Get your say in! This plan isn't set in stone, so make your mark and your contribution. Let's start the conversation here!

=========

CAST:
PROMETHEUS: needs acting/presence, basic acro-top, basic staff/naginata, contact and breathing would be nice but not absolutes
- dressed in plain/unadorned drab clothes, wearing a MASK

CHIEFTAIN: acting, spinning talent
OTHER MEN: creative spinning talent with various tools (this means girls and boys - not just boys) :)
- all wearing tattered/drab clothing/rags, CHEIFTAIN wears crown

HAEPHESTOS: torch poi, acting
ZEUS, and OTHER GODS: creative fire spinning talent with various tools
- all wearing light costumes, wearing MASKS

RAVEN/VULTURE/EAGLE: pref.female, fire fingers, acting/dance
- wearing FLOWING clothes, and MASKS
THE MOUNTAIN: two performers, acro bases.
- wearing DARK clothes, grey or black, close fitting, possibly with hooded masks

==============

ACT 0
- before the firelighters circulate
- CHIEFTAIN and MEN camp in a circle near audience
- huddled, dark and cold, waiting
- they scatter when the fire procession enters (to the back)

ACT I: GODS
- a celebration, life on Olympus
- GODS enter from rear of Stage Right, and form in front of the audience from CENTER to STAGE RIGHT FRONT
- HAEPHESTUS w/torch-poi, ZEUS w/STAFF (and others as we have them, like MERCURY w/poi, APHRODITE w/contact ball, PALLAS w/spear, HERA w/sword)
- GODS celebrate, with each taking turns in the Front and Center for about 45 seconds to perform individually

TRANSITION:
- PROMETHEUS enters from rear Stage Left, lurking
- PROMETHEUS carries SCEPTRE
- during HAEPHESTUS' dance (last one to leave), P. uses SCEPTRE to "steal" fire as GODS exit to Rear
- P. dances and does contact tricks, exploring Fire

ACT II: MEN
- CHEIFTAIN leads MEN forward in darkness from rear Stage Left
- P. greets C. with fire, and shows it to him
- C. takes fire onto his staff, as a sacrament, and passes it to the rest of the MEN
- MEN celebrate and play, dancing as the gods did with various toys
- HAEPHESTUS enters from Stage Right, observing MEN with Fire
- P. sees his fate, gives SCEPTRE to C.
- C. gives P. a NAGINATA to light, and leads MEN to run away (to rear Stage Left)

TRANSITION:
- GODS with lit tools storm STAGE CENTER to surround P.
- P. fights them off with NAGINATA
- P. loses his NAGINATA and is overcome by HAEPHESTUS

ACT III: TORTURE
- GODS form a half circle behind P. in STAGE CENTER, chanting and moving in a regular rhythm
- P. is seized and bound by the MOUNTAIN (acro bases)
- RAVEN enters the circle w/Fire Fingers
- bases carry P. in a Dance with RAVEN
- GODS bear witness, then fade away to rear
- RAVEN tortures P. until death, MOUNTAIN bases drop him

TRANSITION:
- C. leads MEN forward from STAGE LEFT carrying lit SCEPTRE
- MEN have unlit tools now

ACT IV: LIFE
- C. finds P.'s body, MEN surround him
- C. gives a sacrament, removes P.'s MASK, holds it up
- C. lights the MEN from the SCEPTRE, each kisses mask
- MEN dance and spread, and become their full potential
- they are joined, over time, by the GODS who dance among them
- MASKS are exchanged and costumes change, and the MEN are indistinguishable from the GODS
- at some point PROMETHEUS rises without a mask and joins the dance

ACT V: CHAOS/FREE SPIN for the remainder of time
- take a bow when it's done. :)

Second Firefly ticket release!

All right!

Firefly was sold out, but not any more! We are releasing a limited number of tickets through a lottery. This means we will randomly select entries until all the remaining tickets are taken.

Here is the low down:

* Maximum of two tickets per order.
* Entering more than once will not help you.
* One order per person.
* If you have already ordered tickets, your lottery entry will be held until those who do not have tickets have been serviced.
* Paypal only.
* Lottery entries will be selected randomly until all available tickets have been released.
* The lottery will be open from Tuesday, June 12th through Friday, June 15th
* If you are selected, you will be notified via email and you will have one day to complete your order.
* Entering the lottery does not guarantee you a ticket!
* This is not first come, first serve. It's random, so entering the lottery now or Friday afternoon will not influence your chances.

**********************************************************************
To enter the lottery, send an email with your full, real name in the
subject line to: lottery@fireflyartscollective.org

**Please, full name in subject line**

You can tell me how you'd like to bribe me if you'd like as well. I'm
still waiting for some acceptable offers. Seriously!
**********************************************************************

Costuming News

Howdy Folks! I've gotten some questions about costumes... so here's the scoop! I know you wicked sexy creative burners can make cool stuff, and you KNOW how to look crazysexycool, so I ain't worried. I am offering a vision/direction that can totally change, and you can read that direction in the draft script (also posted in this Tribe). I want to have extra costuming ready to welcome folks who can join us later in the process, and I want to encourage EVERYONE to make something of their own as well, if the urge strikes. All you crazy gods and goddesses, get your mask on. Or off. Or whatever.

(I have seen Sebastian's costume concept - at least the mask - at the Walpurgisnacht B&W Ball last weekend... and it's ded sexy!)

Right. So, different folks are getting excited about this, and we've had a big step-up moment from a new member of Boston's Burning Community! Coryn - who I'm sure y'all will meet soon and really dig, as she's quite digable - has awesomely offered to bash up some prototype costuming material! Right now it's in planning stages, but we hope to have a prototype or three by next week. Or so.

What then? Well, clearly, it will be time for a pants-optional-pants-party, where no matter if you are wearing pants or not, you'll be helping to MAKE pants! And other stuff for costumes. Time, date, and place To Be Determined, so stay tuned for more interesting developments!

What do you have in mind as far as musicians go, live music etc...?
I'm a drummer, I've worked with bellydancers and performance artists for years.

Last Year's Video

Here's a link to the video Sarah Hapto put together last year:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=imZLVgxpkwQ

Each group seeking to perform in the Conclave's Great Circle on Burn Night has to submit a video of their concept and performance. Only if that is considered "impressive enough" by Crimson and the Conclave Crew will we be invited to perform. We need to pull together something like this by Mid-June for submission. I will be gathering you fine folks for filming this year... and I thought you'd like to see what had done the trick last year.

All gratitude to Sarah Hapto for putting it together last year. Now let's do it again!

When and Where are we meeting?

So here's my scoop: I can get together every Monday night at the BU poi practice fom 6:30 to 8:30pm.

I will also be available one other day each week at least - I am making time to fit this in and get it done. I may set a standing "Thursday night", location TBD, based on your availability as a group. I will also make time to get together with people individually to work out choreography and such.

When are you available?

...and remember, nothing would make me happier than to have some fine group of y'all get together and, say, bang out some masks or costumes in your own sub-units. I have no desire or need to run this like a military organization, or to push anyone around. I'll be very happy if this comes together as the spontaneous acts of creation and collaboration of all the WONDERFUL people that make up the Boston Fire Family!
