Hey all! So here's the link I mentioned tonight at the Common - I would love to get together and pool on a roll of duvetyne cloth for safety blankets and costuming if anyone else is up for that...One can also shop around online and find an assortment of colours.

Also, keep me posted on the fire-hoop-making get-together? I really want to make a new fire hoop, as mine has several painful design flaws...

Re: Flame-retardant fire-hooping costuming materials
Thu, May 8, 2008 - 11:07 AMThanks so much for the info, Ariel!
I'd be down to go in on some duvetyne cloth ~ as long as Alicia promises to help me sew it :)
And YES let's have a fire-hoop making party! Stay in touch...

Re: Flame-retardant fire-hooping costuming materials
Thu, May 8, 2008 - 12:14 PMI just want to make sure everyone knows that duvetyne is a chemically treated fabric. If you wash it, it will lose the fire retardant properties and need to be re-treated. Thus it may not be the best option for clothing, though you could make items that wouldn't need to be washed often. -

Re: Flame-retardant fire-hooping costuming materials
Thu, May 8, 2008 - 10:07 PMAh! Thank you for mentioning that, Joanna. I should have pointed that out in my original post...
For my own use I intend to make things like vests and arm guards and hair coverings, which don't really need to be cleaned that often. If you want to make a shirt or pants or a dress you may do better with organic cotton or hemp and other natural fibres. -

Re: Flame-retardant fire-hooping costuming materials
Fri, May 9, 2008 - 5:41 AMI don't know anything about that but this is what I did for my fire costume... I bought wool.
It is actually pretty cool as it is kind of warm for those colder nights, and if you go to certain stores you can find some pretty cool shades of wool. However, make sure it isn't a wool blend, which are oh so common out there.
Also, they have kevlar arm warmers out there... you should look into those.

Re: Flame-retardant fire-hooping costuming materials
Tue, May 13, 2008 - 8:04 PMHi,
You all could try Nomex as well. It is a synthetic fiber that is also fire resistant....
Check out massif.com/nomex_clothing/
(I am not sure if you can wash it; there is a toll free number on the web page and you could ask).
