I *could* travel down each week from upper MA/NH area, but honestly, that's a bit of a stretch ($$$). Practicing on your own has its place with meditation, stillness and application of inner patience, but I think being with other people adds a special connectedness too.
As the weather gets nicer outside, I've been starting to think a lot about hooping in the sunshine...I can't wait until it is finally warm enough! In anticipation of much fun to come, I thought it might be a good idea to open up another channel for communication about where and when you will be hooping this spring. I know Tribe already serves this purpose, but I also recognize that a lot of people use Facebook to communicate as well, so why not have a group there too?

The Boston University spin jam has moved to MIT for the summer (the building we used at BU is closed for the summer).

Monday nights come spin poi, hoop, staff, etc at MIT with us for FREE. It is 6pm-9pm. Rain or shine (we have an indoor space right next to an outdoor space - so we can use either depending on the weather). There is NO fire at this practice (even if we are outdoors). You can come late - it's all good.

We meet under the giant dome (which is building 10) at MIT. It's near the corner of Memorial Drive and Massachusetts Avenue (you can sometimes find free parking on Memorial Drive near the dome). It's a 5 minute walk from the Kendall/MIT red line T subway stop.

Here's the MIT map showing building 10 and the large area outside of it:

This one give you a view that includes the Kendall T stop in the upper left hand corner:

For reference, building 7 on Mass Ave is the main entrance with the columns and 32 is the Stata Center (the one that looks like its weathered an earthquake).

Go and look at one of them, you'll see an option to "Edit video annotations" under "Video owner options". You can customize the size and vertical position, and the time each annotation lasts.
So last Friday, 08/08/08 was World Hoop Day. Our intention was to meet and celebrate this occasion, but it RAINED and RAINED and didn't stop. We didn't get to hoop :( So we decided to try again & celebrate World Hoop Day THIS Friday, 08/15/08. The numbers don't align, but hopefully the weather will!

To commemorate this fabulous occasion, hoopers will be gathering & jamming & having a hoop parade. *It is critical that this gathering/parade be viewed in a renegade fashion ~ ie: you all just "randomly decided" to come out & hoop at these places, but THERE IS NO ONE WHO ORGANIZED THIS EVENT. This way, no one will get in trouble* :) Here are the details:

WHO: HOOPERS

WHAT: WORLD HOOP DAY CELEBRATION - TAKE 2

WHERE: MEET ON THE GRASS IN FRONT OF CAMBRIDGE CITY HALL IN CENTRAL SQUARE ~ WE WILL WAIT FOR 10 MINUTES OR SO & THEN BEGIN A MARCH TO HARVARD SQUARE & THE CAMBRIDGE COMMON

WHEN: FRIDAY AUGUST 15TH, 2008 @ 8PM

WHY: BECAUSE WE LOVE HOOPING!

HOW: WE ARE GOING TO ROCK OUT WITH AS MANY HOOPS, HOOPERS, COSTUMES, BOOMBOXES & FUN THAT WE CAN MUSTER.

Here's their mission statement:
Join Us On Our Mission

Since 2007, World Hoop Day has been dedicated to bringing toy and dance hoops to underprivileged children living in extreme poverty and underdeveloped neighborhoods of our world. Founded by Annie O'Keeffe, World Hoop Day is a not for profit organization that uses a community-based approach to provide durable hoops. The adult-sized hoops can be used their entire life as a simple and effective way to bring joy to an otherwise devastating situation.

There are many aid organizations who provide food and medical relief, but what about the mental welfare of a child who grows up too quickly and hardly has a reason to smile or play or just be a child? To date 1,100 hoops have been given away, and a total amount of $1,500 has been raised. The simple hoop has positive physical and mental health benefits, stimulates imaginations, and enables feelings of pure joy and bliss.
We need your help to continue this amazing project!

o~o~o~o~o~o~o~o~o~o~o~o~o~o~o~o~o~o~o~o~o~o~o~o~o~o~o~o~o~o~o~o~o~o~o~o~o~o~o

We're also doing a performance at 1pm on the main stage. I think it's going to be a really fun day, so if you're around, it would be amazing if you would come by & hoop with us!

Also Tomorrow, the Boston Globe's article on Hooping is supposed to come out in the "Living Arts" section. When I last spoke to the editor a few days ago, he said he was 95% sure it's coming out Saturday ~ so keep your eyes peeled b/c I might not have a chance to write you until after the Festival.

I had such a great time yesterday hooping at the common! As some of you know, right as it got dark and most of us started to depart, I realized I lost my earring.. (I know, great timing--damn sunset!!) ;)

You guys were all so good about helping me look for it--thanks for giving it a shot especially since it was probably a little hard on the ol' peepers. Andrew and Simone (with help from their trusty LED's) hung out and we had a search party for at least an hour and a half. You guys rock! That was seriously so nice for you guys to stick around so long. After our necks started to ache from looking at the ground for so long, we called it a night.

BUT THEN...

I called up the special man in my life and he insisted that we go look for it. (This was at about 10:40 and I was wiiiicked tired.) So I went through the motions of looking for it again while him and his roommate scanned the area, industrial flashlights in hand. Low and behold--he found it! Right in the center of where all the traffic was, gold side up.

Total needle in a haysack success!!

And I love you guys. See you all next Wednesday ooor Monday.

I just wanted to let you know that the Beginner's
Hooping Workshop Series on Thursday evenings is
starting soon! Thursday, June 5th is the first one ~
from 8:15pm - 9:30 at the Dance Complex in Central.
Several people have signed up already & most people
have signed up for all 6 classes. I think it is ideal
if you can sign up for all six, but it is not
mandatory ~ even if you can just make it to a couple
of them, it will be beneficial to you. I believe the
classes will be beneficial to even an intermediate
hooping style. Please let me know which ones you can

Fortunately there were some nice little open spaces in which I could hoop at odd moments - and share my hoops with kids and adults who either knew how or wanted to try. Stephen Ide of the Patriot Ledger posted a nice article AND video at http://blogs.townonline.com/folkbluegrass/ (the video alone is at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0cZkucao6nc ).

I have a few nice photos from Hoopla! that I'd like to post, but I don't know the people and don't want to offend. Same with a video "pan" of the entire room - I'd kind of like to put that on Youtube. Does anyone strongly want me to NOT do this without seeing it themselves? (I can always take it down - but I'd rather not put it up in the first place if it''s going to be a problem!)

My vid of the performance is pretty cool - it was so dark that you can't really even SEE the people - just these disembodied hoops! That one's very large, I'll need to reduce its size considerably, that'll take a little learning. But unless something clearly better shows up, I'll plan to do it and put it up.

What fun! THANK YOU, Marria and Ammon and the rest of you organizers!!!
