Injured!!!! Anyone for the pool?

topic posted Sat, August 11, 2007 - 5:03 AM by  Unsubscribed
Well, I may have to put my plans for a BQ on hold....seems I developed a L hip bursitis. Good news is there is no evidence of arthritis in my hips. But I cannot run or walk fast for at least 2 - 4 weeks. Will start physical therapy Monday evening. So now what???

I can do eliptical or cycle if it doesn't hurt. The PT wants me to pool run. Has anyone ever trained in the pool? I am not a swimmer. She thinks since I am an experienced marathoner, I might make my Sept 30 marathon if I pool train....

I have never done it myself, but I've heard from a couple of sources that if you can stand the boredom, it works really well.

I'm sorry to hear that you're hurt. I sure hope you can do cycling instead -- now that's anything but boring! I do half my marathon training on a bike, and climbing hills is just the ticket.

yes I have - you need an aqua jogging belt and a pool that goes up to your chin. it is a little dull, but totally worth it. you can hit the ground running after you've been training in the pool, and it will sort out muscle imbalances in your legs.

do a search on deep water running you'll find lots of tips on how to. remember your feet should not touch the ground in the pool when you are deep water running.

i'm sorry to hear you're hurt - with the right treatment I'm sure you can turn it around! I second Tom on the cycling - excellent cross training.

        Update on my injury progress

        Fri, August 24, 2007 - 3:26 PM
I've been pool running most days of the week, sometimes for an hour, sometimes for 30 minutes in combination with eliptical and stationary cycling. I researched how to make it less boring....not much out there...but I have been doing some interval work...
5 min warm up, repeats of 1:30 min intervals followed by 1:00 min rest for about 30 minutes, then rest followed by some "tempo running". I borrowed an aqua jogger belt from a buddy and my condo pool goes to 9 1/2 feet deep so I am in business!

I am also doing about hour of eliptical and cycling in the gym...the PT sessions have been 3x/wk and will continue that way until next wk. then we slow it down for 2 more sessions. They have been really good, doing lots of strengthening and stretching exercises, followed by hydrocortisone cream applied with an utrasound wand. Definetely feel a difference - the bursitis doesn't feel swollen and the IT band isn't as tight as it was...

This weekend I can start running flat surfaces for up to 2 miles and add 1/2 mile every other day if no lingering pain or soreness..YIPPEE!!!
I will probably keep up the pool running even as I build up the mileage because it is not strenuous at all.

My therapist believes I can run my marathon as planned for Sept 30....so do I. Stay tuned!

Oh yay - I love to hear a happy story!

What do you do for your rest intervals?

also, your healthcare coverage must be awesome - you got seen and it sounds like you're getting top notch information right away.

I'm not confident that I'd have the same experience over here.

              New update!

Well, on Sept 16 I ran but did not race the Philadelphia Distance Run, a half marathon...and I cross the finish line injured! My left hip was visibly swollen. Went back to the doc and he ordered an MRI....result: I have a muscle tear, no evidence of bursitis. So either the bursitis went away during the month of August whle I rested and cross trained, or I never had it to begin with. Now I am back to PT for E-stim and ultrasound 20-3 times a week and off running for 3 weeks. Actually I can start running this weekend. I am going to Chicago with my friends who are in the marathon. Anybody going??? We are making it a long weekend trip, all 12 of us!!!

I can't wait to run again! I really miss it.....
