Alternative Monday Night Space

I am poking around a bit to find an indoor space from 6-8 on Monday nights for spin jam to have a home so any suggestions/help would be appreciated. I *should* be much more free after this weekend but there are some changes in the air that could take more time than I had expected.

It's come up in the past that we may need to pay for a space as our foray into reforming the club at BU fell through and MassArt is unavailable on Monday nights (but still available on a weekend day!!!). Keep in mind that any discussion from here on out has a great probability of 'if we want a Monday night space it will require we pay for it'. If you are a firm supporter in the Monday night meetups then either suggest a free space or accede to the fact that we will most likely pay.

Onwards...

Am I correct in assuming our ideal space would be a large dance studio---one with ceiling as high as BU and mirrors? My biggest concern is that in my limited experience at BU we were in a fairly worn dance studio so shoes and props were never thought of as detrimental to the space. This very well *could* be an issue in some of the places I look into, so any feedback here would be appreciated.

If anyone has a good eye/happens to know the dimensions from the BU space it would be swell. I am awful with dimensions so 2400 square feet sounds dandy to me but could be tiny for however many people we project (15? 25?)

Plenty of talk to start with, please give any feedback and I will do my best to keep on this.

MassArt isn't available on Mondays but other school gyms in the area might be free on Monday night. If other students could look into that, that might also work.

Emerson is only available to our students and faculty, so my school is out. They're kind of jerks anyway...

I would not look at dance spaces, as there are very few that are big enough (not even BU was), and they are expensive. I would look at gym spaces. YMCA, local elementary, middle and high schools, community gyms, etc. The gym at the Y in Salem is barely used. I am sure they would cheaply rent it out to us for a defined number of nights at a good rate. What is available near a T stop... that is a completely different story.

Mooche needs help with this. Can some folks volunteer to find and call places? He can coordinate the search, but more hands are needed.

        Thanks,
        Chad

So you don't think I've fled the country...

Nathan has generously offered to tackle possible spaces in MIT and will hopefully have more information this week.

I will be contacting YMCAs with an eye towards those near the T and hopefully have an idea as to availability and rates by the end of next week.

I am gonna ask the College of the Fenway i.e Wheelock, Simmons, Emmanuel and see if they can do anything like a gym space or a very large dance studio that can fit all of us. I highly doubt that they will let us but its worth a try! If not I can look into a community center here in mission hill or near by hmmm..

I spoke with people from Wentworth and MCPHS, and either they have their space booked or they don't want to give up the space :/
The problem with COF schools or any college is that they don't mind sharing with other colleges but they don't like to let in people that are not students due to safety and such.

I'm posting this on FB as well:

      THIS IS URGENT!!!!

The Huntington Ave YMCA (near Northeastern---the same one that Spinagogue held its December workshops) is available on Monday evenings from 6pm-8pm in November and December. The cost would be reduced from $75/hr to $45/hr as we will be consistently there.

*I need an idea of if people would be comfortable in the space used for Spinagogue workshops* (there is a raised stage and a large empty carpeted area below it)
*I need an idea of if people will be able to afford chipping in on a scale they are comfortable with* (if you can only afford to pay $5 versus $10 that is totally fine, but if you just can't afford it at all I completely understand but would like to know)

      The space is available for:
      -Monday, November 2nd
      -Tuesday November 10th
      -Monday November 16th
      -Monday November 23rd
      -Monday November 30th
-as far as I know, every Monday in December

Please give me feedback ASAP so I can reserve the space starting this coming Monday.

I think we can get a consistent 20 people that will come and pay $5 for the evening. I am also willing to donate the first hour teaching different things for folks during this time. My big concern is that the space isn't big enough. It has been a while since I was in there, but if I remember correctly, 15 people spinning at the same time in there would be really tight.

I am a little concerned that our two spin jams will now be back to back Sunday and Monday. But it does seem that the communtiy is large enough to handle both.

Thanks mooche for the work calling around and finding places for us.

        Thanks for this Mooch!

I'm definitely in (for the Mondays, not so much on Tues), and am willing to pay for it. I haven't been in the space before and my only concern is having enough space to spin. I look forward to checking it out and paying my share next monday...

It might be a good idea to reserve all the Mondays in Nov now, and then see how things go for December (unless we can reserve and then cancel?)

As an afterthought, it may also be a good idea to get people to commit to pay a few weeks at once so that we won't have to worry about paying each time. Have we figured out how payment will work? 20-40 dollars a month/person so that we can keep the space with any extra going to a future space-reserving fund or WF?

Something I just realized that I said in error:

At the most recent Sunday spinjam at MassArt I called a "town meeting" to relay all this info but said that if we didn't get enough immediate interest we would aim at booking this next coming Monday instead of the one tomorrow (or today now, as it is). I need to point out that I made that statement in error, and that the next coming Monday is not available; rather that week it would need to be Tuesday.

        D'oh!

          I'll pitch in.

So... do we have the space tonight?

Mooch fell very ill yesterday and did not reserve the space for tonight. He's currently out of commission. If there is enough interest I can try to get in touch with them to see if we can reserve it last-minute for tonight, but if not then I'll aim at getting it for the next available date (next tuesday).

I think that would be too last minute.

Are you certain there would be enough people on Tuesday? People who can make it Monday nights may not be able to make it on a Tuesday night.

And my best wishes of wellness for Mooch.

Yes. I have received the contract and have the following dates reserved:

            -Tuesday November 10th
            -Monday November 16th
            -Monday November 23rd
            -Monday November 30th

We will see how the first few weeks go before reserving any further so *any* feedback folk have would be much appreciated!

More details for the Huntington Avenue YMCA Spin Jams:

We will be meeting in *Bates Hall* which can be reached by:
              -entering through the main doors
-taking the first hallway on the left
              -through one set of double-doors
-taking your immediate right down the stairs by the sign for Bates Hall and finding spinny-folk at the. bottom on your right :)

Suggested donation is $5 to cover rental but *no one will be turned away*. Parking is a total crapshoot via meters (free at the hours we meet from 6-8) or you can spend $8 at the parking garage around the corner (which is good for carpooling folk). The T is very convienient :)
