Hey everyone, I am taking the wetlands delineation class with Richard Chin in June, I have been searching around for wetlands delineation jobs but I am having a hard time finding positions that don't require previous delineation experience. I live in the Portland Oregon area, but am willing to travel for work. Does anyone know of any place where I could get started doing delineation? Thanks.

You will find no actual jobs that require no previous experience. You WILL find internship opportunities though. I have done one internship with Texas Parks and Wildlife which allowed me to fall right into a job needing the skills I had just learned! I learned radio telemetry, GPS/GIS tracking and mapping, capture techniques, plant identification and such. My experience was one summer, but the graduate student I am now working for needed someone trustworthy who could do all those things. I was hired the day after my interview. I have worked for him for almost two years now, and will continue for at least another 6 months until his field needs are done. Then I will be on the market again. Since I am a senior next semester, I will still be taking student jobs, but all the professors know who I am now, all have utilitzed my volunteering ability (offered myself up for slavery on several occassions) and a couple have already asked me when I will be done with this project. I am desired student slavery material man! The pay sucks, but I am getting the experience I can take with me into the job market. Being 34 makes internships and student jobs for professors very very very worthwhile. You would be amazed at who will hire you! Departments of transportation hire biologists, who'da thunk! Good Luck, and keep searching! OH! Don't forget to go to your career services counselor on campus, because they are the ones who found the TPWD inernship for me. -

Re: Hello and a question...
Fri, May 19, 2006 - 11:28 AMWell I have biological exp.. just not wetlands. I have done bird surveys used GPS/DGPS/GIS software, worked with fish, wildlife etc etc (heck Ill send you a resume if you are interested. kidding). Its just that I have no wetlands exp. That and I have the typical life of a man approaching 40 (ie house and child support payments) that make it hard for me to take much time off from work. Thank you very much for the links though, I will definaetly be looking into them this evening.

Re: Hello and a question...
Fri, May 19, 2006 - 9:14 PMDude, if you want, I can talk to my mom. She wrote her thesis on wetlands I believe. I have her thesis, but I only understand bits. She's a soil scientist, and used to go to work everyday first having to find the gator and then, keep eye on gator. Hehehe.
That sounds so weird...."I can't talk to my mommy!"

Re: Hello and a question...
Wed, October 25, 2006 - 7:52 PMI am also in finding a basic internship regarding wetland delineation. Anything at all. Preferably 1-2 years long. I will be taking a pretty intense labratory course in Ornithology this spring, but it seems that all of the jobs these days are requiring experience with wetland delineation. It's kind of depressing that I was never told about this by my academic advisors.
