Art Criticism in Maintenant

From 1912 to 1915 he published, in Paris, under the name of
_Maintenant_, a little polemical journal magazine which was
certainly the forerunner of _391_ and other aggressive post-war
publications. It served as his loud-speaker with which to make
known to artists (lest any should be unaware) what he thought of
them. His conclusions were often surprising. Von Dongen, alone,
found grace in his eyes. But he was not always wrong, and his
account of a visit to Andre Gide, for example, is an extraordinary
piece of ironically clever criticism. The article devoted to the
Independents Exhibition in Paris in 1914 made him famous, and
unleashed a tempest of protests. He attacked the more outstanding
names. The women painters, no less than the men, were the object
of his insolent commentaries, which were all the more irritating as
they were characterized by an irresistible verve and drollery. And
although everybody said it was outrageous, they could barely
control their chuckles. But he did go too far, nonetheless.
