Re: how many miles on your car this week M-F (19Sep-23Sep)?
Mon, September 19, 2005 - 3:09 PMhmmmm....i dont live there yet but from what ive seen, how can you control how much you drive when you dont have a good cheap public transport system and there is not a way to bike from east bay to sf proper? here in chicago you can bike everywhere and the public transport is 24hours so you can choose to drive ornot. its not much of a choice in the east bay after a certain time though is it? feel free to give me feedback...id love to hear something positive before i get there.. -

Re: how many miles on your car this week M-F (19Sep-23Sep)?
Mon, September 19, 2005 - 3:16 PMI'm absolutely the wrong person to comment on this as we don't have anything resembling a tube here in the North Bay, but I thought BART was a 24 service.
-
Re: how many miles on your car this week M-F (19Sep-23Sep)?
Mon, September 19, 2005 - 4:12 PMSadly enough BART isn't a 24 hour service. During the week it runs from 4am til ~midnight. Saturdays 6am to midnight and Sunday/Holidays 8am to midnight.
SF Muni runs until ~1am
AC transit has some late nite transbay routes that cover the BART gap.
All of the above allow bikes on selective routes.
I encourage you to check into transit 511. I've found this to be a great resource for bay area transport. The trip planner is key to figuring out how to get where, what transportation to use, and how much it's gonna cost.

Consider carpooling into the city with friends - at least one of you won't be burnin fuel :^) -

Re: how many miles on your car this week M-F (19Sep-23Sep)?
Mon, September 19, 2005 - 5:26 PMthanks for the info. i know they allow bikes on bart but if you are used to being in a late night city like chicago, its rough considering living somewhere where everything shuts down by midnight. its like having a curfew to me. and basically i was just saying there is no way for you to ride your bike from east bay to sf since everything is freeway oriented. BART is extremely expensive as well compared to chicago system in which you pay 1.75 and have two hour transfers for only 25 cents and you ride as far as you want, dont pay per stop. so i guess ill have to get a car or something cuz i dont know how you can survive out there otherwise. i guess ill be living in oakland. any further advice appreciated. i like to go to shhows a lot so i will be going to sf more than once a week at night thats why im bummed about the public transit. its probably more cost effective to end up driving drunk considering the cost of bart. -

Re: how many miles on your car this week M-F (19Sep-23Sep)?
Tue, September 20, 2005 - 9:29 PMused to use bart for GD shows and it was effective untill i didn't get there in time. it was nice to have it available though. here in Sac we have the light rail, but i have to drive 15 min. to the nearest station. Only used it during the GMO protests a few years ago....i'm down to give it a go again.
this is a great idea, i spend so much fuel for my work and play and it'll be good to keep track. I'll start tomorrow and see how it goes. !Brilliant! At least then there's some frame of reference.
Even if i get people to carpool with me and kick down a few bucks it'll help in more ways than one. it won't help on my milage though. -

Wed, September 21, 2005 - 7:34 AM<i guess ill be living in oakland.>
sounds like you'll be spending alot of time in the city - there are tons of great shows going on all the time! have you considered living in San Fran instead of the east bay? some folks I know who live in the city get by without a car at all...
<Even if i get people to carpool with me and kick down a few bucks it'll help in more ways than one. it won't help on my milage though.>
It may not help with your mileage... but it helps theirs & the overall gas usage :^)

Re: how many miles on your car this week M-F (19Sep-23Sep)?
Mon, September 26, 2005 - 11:31 AM41 miles????
I need a new profession.
987 miles. It was a busy week.
The problem with my profession is that I have to attend meetings all over the Bay Area. I blew off the Tuesday practice and didn't go to the Beach on Sunday, however I made a trip to SF for an event on both Friday and Saturday last week. That was at least 100 miles that I can trim off. My goal is to reduce my consumption by 10-15% per week until I'm down to 50% of my current number. Soooo...I must get it down to a minimum of 888 this week. -

Re: how many miles on your car this week M-F (19Sep-23Sep)?
Mon, September 26, 2005 - 3:36 PM41 miles may not sound like alot, but i live just over 1 mile from work so there are much better ways for me to transport myself - walk, bike, rideshare, etc. I only rode my bike once last week. Riding every day would save >10 miles!
My "big miles" were spent going into the city Saturday. I shoulda worked harder on a carpool or found a way to BART. -

Re: how many miles on your car this week M-F (19Sep-23Sep)?
Tue, September 27, 2005 - 12:23 AMI had 0 miles through Friday Morning, which was shot all to hell by the fact I drove to Tahoe for a wedding this weekend. But I'm lucky and can walk to work. Unfortunately, my car sitting there all week was apparently an invitation for people to break my window and steal my stuff. Grrrrrrrrrrr.... -

Re: how many miles on your car this week M-F (19Sep-23Sep)?
Tue, September 27, 2005 - 9:01 AMWAY FUCKED UP! YOU DON'T FUCK WITH SOMEBODY'S WHEELS!
Dude...Okay, you've seen my car, I'm sure. I bought it last December after spending some four and a half hours haggling at the dealership. So two days after I bought it I wandered downstairs to the garage. Some rat bastard broke my rear window and snagged my satchel and Mem's fanny pack. This was one of those situations that sucked royally for all parties involved. Scumbag window smasher ran out of the garage thinking they scored big with a purse and a fanny pack. They opened the bags outside of their meth dealers house (I'm sorta projecting here) and found....
....
....
... a set of fire poi, a Gerber knife, a few sets of practice poi, and other related crap.
For us? We were screwed out of most of our equipment. Strangely enough my iPod and Podcaster were safely in the glove box along with the pink slip for my new car. I got a dealer-installed alarm the next business day. -

Hilarious material for various sick sites, and the satisfaction of a successful defense. Not to mention that wonderful lingering scent of singed hair. -

Re: how many miles on your car this week M-F (19Sep-23Sep)?
Tue, September 27, 2005 - 11:26 AMI actually did this when somebody ripped my primary cover off of my harley when I was 22. I wired a spare car battery to the frame and parked the fucker in my backyard. I don't know if anybody ever tried to fuck with it after that, but my cat Vito learned to avoid it like the plague. -

Re: how many miles on your car this week M-F (19Sep-23Sep)?
Wed, September 28, 2005 - 9:43 AMSee, though, you *gotta* know...thus the cameras. It's so much more satisfying to have footage, don't you think? Perhaps have a flamethrower rigged to scare the living shit out of anyone who tries to fuck with it.
What a digression...flamethrowers and gas stations certainly don't mix. -
