starting today, keep track of how many miles you use you car. on Friday - check back in and post your miles. encourage your friends & coworkers to do the same!

next week, we can do it again and see if we can reduce the number.

SF Bay Area
  • hmmmm....i dont live there yet but from what ive seen, how can you control how much you drive when you dont have a good cheap public transport system and there is not a way to bike from east bay to sf proper? here in chicago you can bike everywhere and the public transport is 24hours so you can choose to drive ornot. its not much of a choice in the east bay after a certain time though is it? feel free to give me feedback...id love to hear something positive before i get there..
    • Sadly enough BART isn't a 24 hour service. During the week it runs from 4am til ~midnight. Saturdays 6am to midnight and Sunday/Holidays 8am to midnight.

      SF Muni runs until ~1am

AC transit has some late nite transbay routes that cover the BART gap.

All of the above allow bikes on selective routes.

I encourage you to check into transit 511. I've found this to be a great resource for bay area transport. The trip planner is key to figuring out how to get where, what transportation to use, and how much it's gonna cost.

Consider carpooling into the city with friends - at least one of you won't be burnin fuel :^)
      • thanks for the info. i know they allow bikes on bart but if you are used to being in a late night city like chicago, its rough considering living somewhere where everything shuts down by midnight. its like having a curfew to me. and basically i was just saying there is no way for you to ride your bike from east bay to sf since everything is freeway oriented. BART is extremely expensive as well compared to chicago system in which you pay 1.75 and have two hour transfers for only 25 cents and you ride as far as you want, dont pay per stop. so i guess ill have to get a car or something cuz i dont know how you can survive out there otherwise. i guess ill be living in oakland. any further advice appreciated. i like to go to shhows a lot so i will be going to sf more than once a week at night thats why im bummed about the public transit. its probably more cost effective to end up driving drunk considering the cost of bart.
        • used to use bart for GD shows and it was effective untill i didn't get there in time. it was nice to have it available though. here in Sac we have the light rail, but i have to drive 15 min. to the nearest station. Only used it during the GMO protests a few years ago....i'm down to give it a go again.

this is a great idea, i spend so much fuel for my work and play and it'll be good to keep track. I'll start tomorrow and see how it goes. !Brilliant! At least then there's some frame of reference.

Even if i get people to carpool with me and kick down a few bucks it'll help in more ways than one. it won't help on my milage though.

sounds like you'll be spending alot of time in the city - there are tons of great shows going on all the time! have you considered living in San Fran instead of the east bay? some folks I know who live in the city get by without a car at all...

It may not help with your mileage... but it helps theirs & the overall gas usage :^)
