FINAL PUSH BEFORE THE FEDERAL ELECTION:
KEEP BC'S COAST OIL-FREE!

PLEASE sign the online petition at: http://www.bcoilslick.org/

Maintain the Moratorium - Please WRITE, RALLY, and COLLECT SIGNATURES!

Let's keep destructive, dirty fossil fuel exploration, drilling, and
transportation permanently away from BC's wild coast! It is the one year
anniversary of the federal public input process (the Priddle Process)
results, where 75% of the citizens opposed lifting the moratorium on oil
and gas development off BC's Pacific Coast.

Considering that a federal election is coming up, the WCWC believes that
the government should be obligated to adhere to the results of its own
public input process and publicly declare that they'll maintain the
moratorium - or better yet, simply ban offshore oil and gas development
in Canada's Pacific once and for all.

You can do 3 things:

1. GET SIGNATURES ON THE OFFSHORE OIL AND GAS PETITION!

We need 10 000 signatures by Dec.13 in time for our rally in Vancouver
(see below). Go to www.bcoilslick.org to sign the online petition, and
most importantly, to download hardcopies to circulate. You can drop them
off or mail them to our office (see address at bottom) no later than
Dec.12. So far, we have 7500 signatures (1400 online, 6100 hardcopies).
Petitions can be circulated at your workplace, in your classes, or taken
door to door.

2. RALLY on Tuesday, Dec.13 with the WCWC outside federal Minister of
Industry David Emerson's office (2148 Kingsway) in Vancouver at 12:30 pm

We'll be presenting the federal Minister of Industry David Emerson with
a Christmas gift: 10 000 signatures of people who want the government to
ban offshore oil and gas development in BC. The petitions will be placed
in a giant gift-wrapped box under our little Christmas tree, where there
will be a giant stocking which will be stuffed with our "Christmas wish"
(Maintain the Moratorium). We'll also have several speakers, including
Ken Wu and Jen Harrison of the WCWC. Will Minister Emerson be like Santa
or like Scrooge (or the Grinch)??

If possible please contact Jen Harrison, WCWC campaign intern at
jen@wildernesscommitteevictoria.org to confirm that you can come so we
can get a sense of the numbers coming.

3. WRITE to the FEDERAL LIBERAL GOVERNMENT.

Now is the time we really need to flood the government with letters. Be
sure to include your home mailing address so they know you're real.

Let them know whether or not you believe they should:

- Ban offshore oil and gas development off BC's Pacific Coast. Offshore
oil and gas developments would risk major oil spills that would hit the
ecologically sensitive shores of the Queen Charlotte Islands, Great Bear
Rainforest, and Vancouver Island; harm and kill fish, invertebrates and
whales through seismic testing (oil exploration using sonic underwater
blasts); contaminate the ocean with daily chronic pollution (toxic
drilling fluids and waste waters, chronic oil leakages, and small
spills); and contravene Canada's Kyoto commitment through major
greenhouse gas emissions.
- Adhere to the results of their own public input process where 75% of
3700 respondents opposed lifting the moratorium.
- Instead, foster clean and renewable wind power and tidal power
projects off BC's coast.

WRITE TO:

David Emerson, Minister of Industry:
Emerson.D@parl.gc.ca

Prime Minister Paul Martin:

Dion.S@parl.gc.ca

John McCallum, Minister of Natural Resources:
McCallum.J@parl.gc.ca

As importantly, write to your local federal Member of Parliament (MP)
who you can find at: http://www.gc.ca/directories/direct_e.html

NOTE!: If you have David Anderson as your MP or a federal NDP MP, you
may want to THANK them for already being champions of maintaining the
moratorium.
by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), are moving to lower
organic standards by allowing a Bush appointee to create a list of
synthetic ingredients that would be allowed organic production. Even
worse these proposed regulatory changes will reduce future public
discussion and input and take away the National Organic Standards
Board's (NOSB) traditional lead jurisdiction in setting standards.
What this means, in blunt terms. is that USDA bureaucrats and industry
lobbyists, not consumers, will now have more control over what can go
into organic foods and products.

This week, acting in haste and near-total secrecy, the U.S. Senate
will vote on a "rider" to the 2006 Agriculture Appropriations Bill
that will reduce control over organic standards from the National
Standards Board and put this control in the hands of federal
bureaucrats in the USDA (remember the USDA proposal in 1997-98 that
said that genetic engineering, toxic sludge, and food irradiation
would be OK on organic farms, or USDA suggestions in 2004 that
heretofore banned pesticides, hormones, tainted feeds, and animal
drugs would be OK?).

For the past week in Washington, OCA has been urging members of the
Senate not to reopen and subvert the federal statute that governs U.S.
Organic standards (the Organic Food Production Act - OFPA), but rather
to let the organic community and the National Organic Standards
resolve our differences over issues like synthetics and animal feed
internally, and then proceed to a open public comment period.
Unfortunately most Senators seem to be listening to industry lobbyists
more closely than to us. We need to raise our voices.

In the past, grassroots mobilization and mass pressure by organic
consumers have been able to stop the USDA and Congress from degrading
organic standards. This time Washington insiders tell us that the "fix
is is already in." So we must take decisive action now. We need you to
call your U.S. Senators today. We need you to sign the following
petition and send it to everyone you know. We also desperately need
funds to head off this attack in the weeks and months to come. Thank
you for your support. Together we will take back citizen control over
organic standards and preserve organic integrity.

Toward that end I think it would be helpful if we zero in on ONE oil company. With us so spread apart it would be helpful if we get on the same page so said profit rapist gets reports from around the country that there is a unified effort in the works.
Exxon/Mobile and Shell are the two most likely candidates. There are some lesser players, but I think we need to make the bigger ones the targets. thoughts?
Executives Think Oil Companies May Be Padding Profits

POSTED: 12:04 pm EDT September 21, 2005

MADISON, Wis. -- Eight Democratic governors want President George W. Bush and Congress to investigate possible gasoline price-gouging after Hurricane Katrina.

__________________________________________________

Sep 21, 2005 — By Tom Doggett

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Federal Trade Commission is investigating whether gasoline price profiteering has occurred and if oil companies have constrained refinery capacity to manipulate fuel prices, an agency official said Wednesday.

"A determination that unlawful conduct has occurred will result in aggressive law enforcement activity by the FTC," John Seesel, an FTC associate general counsel, told a Senate Commerce Committee hearing.

'Working Wounded': Follow the Leader
Oil Prices Drop As Hurricane Rita Weakens
Latest Market Details

The FTC is responding to language in recently passed energy legislation that requires the agency to probe whether gasoline prices have been manipulated by attempts to reduce refining capacity, Seesel said.

U.S. oil companies have adamantly denied that they have acted to constrain gasoline or crude oil supplies.

The FTC is keeping an eye on gasoline prices, even though they have fallen from their record $3.07 per gallon national average price seen when Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast, Seesel said.

"The commission is very conscious of the swift and severe price spikes that occurred immediately before and after Katrina made landfall," Seesel said.

Four major oil refineries remain shut and a large chunk of oil production in the Gulf of Mexico is still offline due to damage from Hurricane Katrina which slammed into Louisiana and Mississippi three weeks ago.

And now with the approach of Hurricane Rita, which has strengthened into a Category 4 storm, oil and gas companies have evacuated thousands of their workers from oil rigs and production platforms in the Gulf. Some refineries are starting to shut down, and Houston's mayor called for an evacuation of low-lying, flood-prone areas of his city.

Separately, the Government Accountability Office said recent retail gasoline prices have risen faster than crude oil prices.

This goes against the historical trend when major crude oil price swings are generally mirrored by gasoline prices, said Jim Wells, GAO director of natural resources and environment.

In a letter, they say they're concerned about "excessive profits being made by oil companies who are taking advantage of this national crisis."

The letter is signed by the governors of Oregon, Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, New Mexico, Iowa, Montana and Washington.

The letter cites a study by a University of Wisconsin economist who found the hurricane was not entirely to blame for high prices at the pump.

Bush has asked Attorney General Alberto Gonzales to handle any price-gouging allegations.

Last week, the Senate passed legislation requiring the Federal Trade Commission to investigate price-gouging accusations.
FTC nominees on hold
By Lauren Shepherd

The White House could recess-appoint two controversial Federal Trade Commission (FTC) nominees if two Democratic senators do not release their holds on one of them — the GOP selection to head the commission.

Sens. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) and Ron Wyden (D-Oregon) have placed a hold on Deborah Majoras’s confirmation as the FTC chairwoman, citing concerns that her former job as a partner at the Jones Day law firm would create conflicts of interest. Majoras, a White House nominee, represented ChevronTexaco Corp. while at Jones Day.

During a hearing last month on Majoras’s confirmation, both senators expressed concern that her job would force her to recuse herself from some petroleum investigations.

FTC Chief Ethics Officer Christian White has said that Majoras would not be prohibited from serving as chairwoman of the commission.

The Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee is scheduled to vote tomorrow on Majoras’s confirmation and the confirmation of Jon Leibowitz, a Democratic nominee, as a new commission member.

“We don’t like recess appointments, but it’s clear the FTC needs to have these people,” said Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), who chairs the Senate Commerce Committee. “It’s a matter of when the Senate Democrats will lift their blocking.”

Wyden and Boxer’s holds are still in effect, according to a Wyden spokesman.

“[Wyden] feels as though he has asked repeated questions to her and he has not received what he deems to be sufficient answers,” the spokesman said.

If Majoras and Leibowitz are voted out of the committee tomorrow, they will be placed on the Senate calendar to await a floor vote.

But considering the amount of work that still needs to be accomplished in the Senate before the session ends, one senior Democratic aide was skeptical that either of the nominations would be debated on the floor.

“They will probably recess Majoras,” said the aide. “If they do that, will they recess-appoint Leibowitz? I don’t know.”

An FTC spokeswoman declined to comment and referred questions on the nominees to the White House.

The White House did not return phone calls requesting comment.

If Majoras or Leibowitz were appointed during a recess, their terms would last only until the end of the current Congress.

In May, Bush agreed not to make any more judicial appointments during recesses in exchange for a promise by Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle (D-S.D.) not to filibuster 25 judicial nominees that were stalled.

That deal, though, did not extend to nominations for non-judicial posts.
Majoras’s nomination is tied to Leibowitz’s in a horse-trade-type deal where both parties got to nominate someone for the commission.

Leibowitz is the vice president of congressional affairs for the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA). He also served as a staff director for the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Leibowitz’s ties to the MPAA have caused the Center for Digital Democracy (CDD), a nonprofit group that supports diversity on the Internet, to oppose his nomination until after a lawsuit involving the MPAA and a now-defunct Internet video retailer, Intertainer, is settled. Leibowitz has been subpoenaed in the lawsuit, which charges that the MPAA played a role in shutting down the site.

“I don’t think they should vote on his nomination until they sort this out,” CDD Executive Director Jeff Chester said. “I want to get to the bottom of it.”

“Why put him on the FTC and then find out he quashed competition?” he added.
Chester sent a letter to the committee last week detailing his concerns.
But the senior aide said the letter has not changed the committee’s support for Leibowitz.

“A lot of Democratic members [of the committee] have substantial questions about [Majoras],” the aide said, adding, “I don’t see any weakness in Leibowitz’s support.”

The aide said that any questions about Leibowitz “rise to a fairly low level” and that the subpoena does not point to any specific wrongdoing by the nominee.

“I don’t think any Democratic senator is going to vote against him,” the aide said.

Wall Street brokers rejoice as oil prices drop to...get this...$65.85 as of 9/6. That is a pittance. That is a mere $1.61 drop. As long as the demand is there, then the price will continue to rise. The demand is only going to increase now that SUVs are falling out of favor with the ruling class. The prices on these vehicles for resale will be reasonable enough that the younger generation will start purchasing them. Once again the demand for fuel will spike.

Even those who live outside the united states are strongly effected by these developments. Prices for plastics are already expected to increase due to the price for oil futures. Who pays for these increases? You, me...US!

Those who have given up on cars are not going to escape either. Those little bottles of vitamin water? Oil. Those hemp-based clothes are NOT made by hand picking plants to go to a spinning wheel. Oil. Turning off the television and reading a book still involves light. Oil. Lighting a candle? It got to the vendor somehow. Oil.

This must end NOW!

Invite EVERYBODY on your tribe list to join this tribe! We can organize single-day boycotts that will cause the end-vendor (gas station owners) mass amounts of concern. We are not going to reach them at the top unless we start hacking away at the bottom. The time is now. The power rests with each of us. Together we can change the economy toward our benefit and those of our brothers and sisters.

The only crime is failure to organize. Peaceful, firm demonstration is the response that they fear most. They need us more than we need them.

Love to all. Get to work!
