Not that we are anywhere near there, but in theory, someday, Wal-Mart could become a good corporate citizen.
If they did, the proper action would be to stop boycotting.
What would they have to do to get to that point?

Re: When to Stop?
Mon, November 13, 2006 - 8:11 PMresponsible employment- a living wage, REAL health benefits, non-discrimination in hiring and promoting
responsible community- less of a slash-and-burn approach to business, awareness that their big-box stores do not fit well into most communities and be willing to situate themselves on the outskirts
i'm sure others can add to this -

Tue, November 14, 2006 - 7:03 AMLets not forget start selling quality items instead of the cheap crap they sell now (At least most of the store brand stuff is crap)
Stop putting outragious packaging demands on thier supplier (actually to solve this the suppliers need to tell WalMart to shove it.) Most companies have two packaging systems... one they prefer and one that WalMart demands. -

Re: When to Stop?
Sat, November 18, 2006 - 6:20 PMjust a quick thought on the side
a tangent, in other words
I think globalization is going to reduce ALL Americans, save the professional classes, to working for pitifully low wages. So, i don't have much hope for getting substantially higher wages for Wal-Mart employees. Benifits, yes. $12 an hour, no.
Here's a quote from around 1890, uttered by Brooks Adams, younger brother of Henry. People saw globalization coming way back then:
ALL CIVILIZATION IS CENTRALIZATION
ALL CENTRALIZATION IS ECONOMIZATION
THE WORLD GRAVITATES TOWARD ECONOMIC CENTRALIZATION
THEREFORE
ASIA IS CHEAPER THAN EUROPE
THEREFORE ASIA THRIVES
AND EUROPE DIES.
I'd just change "Asia" to 3rd world, and "Europe" to The Industrial World.
I predict Ford is planning to shift production to Mexico. It might have to be done gradually, over 15 years, but why wouldn't they? They might even make phoney BAD decisions, on purpose, to create phoney crises, so as to have an excuse to do so!
Go into nursing. Join or create a commune, co-op, or intentional community (see the tribe by that name). Because the world is gravitating.

Mon, November 20, 2006 - 10:35 AMModerator, notice this guy! Differing is one thing...
Now, to his point, Gore Vidal wrote how the world's economic cente rof gravity migrated West, from London to NY. It could continue travelling, and end up in Asia.
Ask any working class American where the factory jobs are going. They know.
