Railroad Accidents and Community Activism

Just taking a moment to put this out to the universe for a friend of mine...

He has just lost several friends to a RR crossing near St Louis that has proven to be a location of multiple fatal car/train collisions. There is no barrier or warning lights and the RR company has shown no willingness to do anything to make the crossing safer.

He called me to find out 1) how to become an activist (well, now there is a topic, isn't it) but also to find out 2)if I knew anyone else who is fighting this sort of fight in their own community.

I don't really know where to begin on the second topic. I looked on the web and found a few sites that might be helpful, but nothing that really jumped out at me.

If you have any ideas, please let me know and I will share them with him.

dealing with the elements

I am trying to figure out a way to have paper information at a booth I work at that is outside...we have tried just having the papers weighted with rocks but it just isn't very user friendly. The idea is for people to be able to easily SEE the information...not have to fight the wind and the weights ect to get to it.

Whatever we construct has to be able to not topple over and blow about in the wind.

Also, it needs to be easily constructed and dismantled, and must be stored in a relatively small space, so it has to become as flat as possible.

I have a vague idea in my head for a bulletin board attached to a saw horse...but I'm not sure if such a contraption would survive the wind gusts we get in the spring and fall here in Missouri. I'm also not handy enough with tools to know how to construct such a thing so that it comes apart & goes back together easily, but is still stable when put together.

I picture the information being tacked or stapled to the bulletin board in such a way that folks could read enough to get them to ask for the copies...and we could keep the copies stored away from the elements.

Anyone have any ideas? Or know anyone who is handy with this kind of thing?

having and eating the cake

Hey all,

I need help figuring out how to satisfy all my wedding needs. Me & the SO are getting married this year. He wants to do it in the spring sometime. We've done a lot of talking about eloping to St. John. This would be ideal, no problem, end of story, except that a) my daughter really wants to and should be involved in our marriage ceremony somehow, and b) my community is really important to me, and having their witnessing & support is important to me. I thought maybe we could elope this year and do a handfasting with the community sometime next year, but that still seems like an inadequate solution since it leaves my daughter in the lurch for a whole year. So I turn to you.

Anyone feel like playing with these puzzle pieces for awhile?

Hey folks...just wanted to let you know about a BRAINSTORMING thing happening in Columbia, MO. If you are interested, just mail me a message...

The AnArtist Committee is a informal group of folks who believe that art is an essential component of creating peace and who are offering themselves as a creative brainstorming tool to the peace community.

We are not formal or structured but all the folks currently involved have links to established peace organizations (although this is not a requirement). We will meet only when we feel there is a need for it: as in when the peace community needs some creative juice OR one of the members calls us together because they have a creative project that they would like brainstorming or support on.

The AnArtist Committee is not meant be a physical hands-on type of creation tool for anyone; however, we suspect that individuals within the group will offer those kind of services to manifest creative ideas when they see fit. We aren't attached to any peace group using any of our ideas...but hope that we can, at the least, light sparks of creativity for others.

(If anyone went to the PeaceWorks Annual Dinner in November of 06 and saw the Pieces of Peace quilt, then you will see the kind of ideas that get created out of this type of group.)

The following has been e mailed to hundreds and thousands all over
the world to activate the first simultaneous Chalk4Peace (scroll down)

People young and old from all over the world are being activated to
participate in this GLOBAL Art/Peace project taking place in
communities everywhere Sept 16/17th

This effort follows the success of smaller localized Chalk4Peace
events in London since 2003

The Chalk4Peace project has already transformed the experience of

Carry some chalk with you, invite a friend with you, to chalk
inspirations on the pavement whenever and wherever you fancy.

up with a few boxes of chalk, or even get some from your local quarry.
