beer on the playa

As both of you might suspect, this is about making, drinking, and/or sharing beer at burning man. If you don't know, I will be unable to attend the festivities this year, but it does not mean that the dream can not live on. Please invite others to join this tribe, so that way when BM '08 rolls around we can consider doing a beer flavored theme camp, and prehaps even a fully sanctioned hoembrew competition.

I wish I have found this tribe prior to the burn this year. I brought beer, and for got my taps :(
Got hooked up thursday, took 5 gallons of IPA to the DPW Ghetto, and ended up taking beer home!
Ok, I wasnt very actively trying to give beer away, and I didnt have taps 'till thursday, but still... I was shocked.

I brought 5 gallons of a chocolate hazelnut porter as well and I think i still have a bit of it left...

I'd love to at least get together for a 'beer tasting' next year (or a reagonal if anyone is near Sothern California).

Not only do we want to have tasings, but we want to brew and build a camp around it. create a beer-to-beer network as it were.

Has anyone actually made a batch in 1 week that came out, how can I put this, -not- tasting like newcastle?
I've never made anything that I would consider presentable (I'll drink it, sure) in less than about two weeks, and that was under controlled fermentation temperatures.

I'm just curious.... I fully accept that others might be more skilled than I at the rush brew.

'light' beers (low initial S.G.) and wheats tend to do well in this category. a nice Heffe has the added advantage of the fact that its supposed to be cloudy, so the appearance is not really a factor. The main factors i have seen are :a fast fermenting yeast, and not much for it to ferment- this way the fermentation process is over fairly quickly and the beer can condition for the rest of the week. obviously force carbonating in a keg is also the way to go. Its really hard to bottle condition in 2-3 days.

Will it be the best beer you have ever made- probably not (although brewing on the playa will certainly make it a little better).
Will you be able to make an inperial stout or barleywine? no...
you just need to have your expectations in the right place- it will be a good brew, and we will all have a hell of a time making it (not to mention drinking it). It will be better than any of the macro-brews out there (and certainly better than macro-brew 'light' beers.

I'm with you on this. It will not be the best beer you will ever have, but what fun making it.

Heya all, a friend just told me about this forum....

I've been bring homebrew to the playa for a couple of years now. It will be fun to do some sort of exchange...

We ran the B(O)(O)by Bar at 3 O'clock, and will return this year. Are the folks that were doing "Homebrew-for-a-Homebrew" part of this tribe also?.... I ran into one of them last year... I think he called himself God...... Anyway, just curious....

                  Hi kurt,

It is always good to have another brewer around. I didn't get a chance to go this last year ( new youngin') but I look forward to meeting you on playa next year if not before.

As of yet the "Homebrew-for-a-Homebrew" people have not yet joined this little effort. And I do believe you are right , one of them called himself God, The guy I got to talking to over there is 'Safety 12th', he had a great Jalepeno beer. If anyone knows them, try to get them to join. I think they were from Reno.

Yea, I haven't gotten over to the brew place since we got back, but he said he is usually there on Friday's, so I'll try to run into him..... We did 5 batches last year, and I'll prolly do a few more than that this year, plus the holidays are coming up... I'm going to have to get over there soon....

                    Nice to meetcha!!!

we did a homebrew exchange at carbo fuckin nation in 2007. we brought a 22 oz bottle in exchange for an early pull off their draft, before they really opened for the day. I'd like to do something like that for 2008 too.
The Ranger social at Berlin had like 15-20 gallons of homebrew on tap this year. I suspect there will be more for 2008.
