A CNN SCROLL May 1st 2008 7:09 ET

A new survey frrom the CDC says more than 3 out of 4 new moms now breast feed their infants, the highest rate in the US in at least 20 years. - AP

You know what, I don't trust this statistic, unfortunately. Is it your experience? Not mine. Too many women SAY they will breast or breast feed for a couple of weeks and give up.

If the CDC says more are breast feeding than the agencies that made those commericials supporting breastfeeding loose funding.

We still need to do our own personal campaigning & supporting, ladies.

I would be happier if the scroll read 3 out of 4 women breastfeed for 6 months.

  • I really wish you could see this in public. I never see moms breastfeeding anywhere. I always see moms just plugging a bottle in. *sigh* I know in my circle of friends only 2 other breastfeeders... and I coached both of them!
    • Most of the women I know STARTED breastfeeding, or at least tried. I don't actually know any who skipped it competely (of my personal acquaintance, anyway) In my experience, the ones who say they ARE going to breastfeed, do (come hell or high water)... while the ones who say they'll try... it depends a lot on the baby. The ones that are naturally strong nursers make it until something else gets in the way (6 months seems to be the usual goal, or outside limit among this set). The ones that are fussy, don't gain well, or just give their moms sore nipples... end up on a bottle pretty quickly. That's my observation from western Canada

But yeah... not many in public.
