I'm a preschool teacher that does not support this proposed solution to our understaffed and under-funded preschools.
One of the points that are being sold is that there will be preschool for all children at four years of age.
Why start at four why not earlier? Children begin to learn at a very early age, and the demand on preschool availablilty begins at 1-2 years old. That's when parents are running tight on maternity leave pay or their children are needing a stimulating environment or socialization. What I find disturbing is that the age limit for this plan seems to be awfully convienient with preparing these kids for the demanding STAR testing that California has inflicted on our kids. In fact the main supporters are not preschool teachers but panicky parents being told by put-upon teachers that have to answer to the School board, that then in turn have to answer to the governments need to see higher grades in our state.
Another thing that the proposition makes sound so good is that this will all be free.
Weelllll, it would be nice to have free preschool. I have friends who are still in the messed up quagmire that is our State subsidized childcare. They have trouble getting on subsidized childcare because they had to leave their jobs rather than get fired which would have put them on the top of the list. In the meantime, I have worked with parents that time and time again have taken full advantage of state subsidized childcare while they lazed around at home and left their children as young as 1 and a half at school for at least 8 hour days! Now the state has the gall to say that they will make it free for everyone to have alientated children and allow"hands-off" parents to be even further removed from rearing their children.
Furthermore the funding that will be making this "free" preschool will be in the hands of the same people who have screwed up our K-12 system. Do we really need them to inflict more pain on our children and our wallets for a plan that serves only the state's nuerotic need for higher standing grades? No, NO, NNNNOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So please support our future generation and VOTE NO ON PROP 82!
