Eco Couture - Way more Affordable

Hi, I'm seeking like minds.

I grew up designing and making my own clothes since a little girl, and apprenticed with Mirage in Melbourne, Australia’s largest CMT house for major Oz designers; before studying fine art at Heatherleys in London. I was also sponsored by Mirage and a runner-up in the Australian Fashion Awards. Then I traveled and lived in a few different countries and got into planet activism and events, then running an online arts community, then helping manage festivals. Now current fashion has caught up with the designs in my head and the ideals in my heart and I recently returned to designing wearable art.

The stuff I’m now designing and reconstructing are Eco Couture, individual one-off’s made from recycled and vintage fabrics. My design skills are coming back and improving with each collection batch. Sketches and photos of recent experiments are up at http://www.recycledfordancing.com plus I already have clothes in 2 boutiques, addresses are on the site under Retail Stores.

I also do custom stage gear, before working on festivals full time I actually did costumes for Music TV dancers, musicians, and theatre. I had a few designs on national TV way back when, on long running music TV show called Countdown. And I designed costumes for a whole Bertolt Brecht play at the Chelsea Playhouse in London, plus whole wardrobes for nightclub dancers and contemporary cabaret.

My current designs are inspired by San Francisco and Japanese street fashion, as well as European Couture and Burning Man. For me it is sculpture using textiles with a wearable framework and chaos, I take something that I see and mix it with something else that I see, each piece inspiring the next piece. Anyway take a peek at http://www.recycledfordancing.com for art’s sake, and keep me in mind when you are thinking of new additions to your wardrobe or recycling your wardrobe.

Thank you for being here.

Advice please! :) I plan on wearing a really cute frosted taupish, gold sequinned dress that I got from Banana Republic a couple years ago. I got such a great deal - it was close to $400, only for $40. Anyway, besides the sequins, it's just a very simple v-neck, sleeveless dress that hits above the knee and lays perfectly - not to tight. What type of jacket should I wear with it? Woud a faux fur be too va va voom?

best place to resell??

So where do you all think is the best place to resell clothing?? I have a few pairs of jeans one of which is designer, some shoes, purses, and a few random other items. I would like to make as much money as possible, but I will donate the rest to goodwill...anyway, has anyone had any really good or bad experiences with specific stores??

so I bought a bunch of clothes at the Gap and now I wish I hadn't...actually it is just the jeans that I wish I hadn't bought...they just don't fit me very well. I should have just saved the money and bbought a pair of the expensive designer jeans that I LOVE. I know they are expensive, but I love how they fit and I wear jeans almost everyday, and I buy cheap everything else...am I just making excuses?

Thrift Store Costume

I bought a hat yeaterday I just couldn't resist!

The hat is black and looks a little like a sun hat (only black). On one side it's folded up and along the edge are black flowers / fabric flowers with tiny rinestones placed on a few flower centers.

The way the hat sits: It's sculptured so that when you put the hat on, it curves up so one side is high and the other low... Remember how Kate Winslet wore the hat in her first scene? Something like that It's Jack McConnell Boutique Hat it that helps...

The hat is very nice... but what do I wear with it? I think it would make a costume... but what costume?

It sits like the brown/tan hat (not as low though) on the right side of the screen./

Well I went shopping yesterday even though i shouldn't of...anyway I got some good basics for the winter. I bought two pairs of jeans from the gap...Good price and they fit pretty well (I ususally spurge on designer jeans, but I can't afford it, so this was a good replacement). I also found a bunch of long sleeve T-shirts at the gap. I don't usually go to the Gap, but it is a good place to get basics and there are some really great finds if you catch a sale!!

Cheap Asian Clothes and Objects in NY

Pearl River Market recently opened a new location in downtown NYC on Broadway. I haven't been in it yet, but I know that the old store on Canal Street had great bargains on Asian influenced clothes and objects. If you are thinking of buying some of those cute Asian inspired slippers--consider walking along the Bowery, or Grand St. in NY and ducking into a little store that sells knicknacks or an outdoor vendor--they often have trendy slippers at a 1/3 of the price you would pay for it in Urban Outfitters.

I went to forever 21 today, because I have plans to go out tonight and I needed something new to wear. It was perfect, I found a cute and trendy top for the bargan price of 16.80...now I have something cute to wear and even if I never wear it again, I'm sure I will have a memorable night (maybe because of it). Do other people "shope for events" (and not galas or first date kind of events...just drinks with close friends), or is it just me???

For some reason, I have had this crazy desire to get a hat. A few weeks ago I was at a store on Haight street that had all sorts of cute hats. And I might just go back there and purchase one, but before I do I kind of wanted to see what else is out there. Does anyone know of good places that sell hats? And I would prefer to keep it in the $15-$20 budget.

The joy and the hell of shopping

okay we ladies just love it.... checkin out what's new, finding cute things, trying on, and looking good in cute said things, and ultimately accumulating a little purchase pile that we can take home and integraet with our already fabulous collection of things. Why is it that having something new in the closet can make you feel soo darn good? it's like the easy choice when figuring out what to wear. it immediately makes you feel like you've hyped yourself up cause it's new.... "i've got a date.... hmmm, no question, I'll wear my cute new skirt!!" easy. dressed. ready and oh so fabulous. oh it's a drug for most of us, yes it is. and it sure tastes good,
unless of course it doen't. like when you try on a hundred things and absolutely nothing fits, or everything you put on makes you see your luscious legs as thundering thighs, your gorgeous curves as excessive rolls... or when you go into some store looking for something in particular and the fashion world has not collected your mental fax and delivered your vision in your size to said store. or when you're looking for somethin in a size and you can't find it and no one is there to help you, in fact "who frickin works in this store?" or bad service. rude sales people, or the ones that ignore you, or the ones that tell you everything you've tried is fabulous (even when it's those gaucho pants you mistakenly wore outside the room to get a wider perspective which you unfortunately realized was your ass). And finally, being dragged shopping by a friend ready to burn some cash when you're broke as hell. Or shopping to feel better for some reason and charging it cause you have no money, then justifying it cause it's making you feel better...
are we crazy? is it a drug? either way it brings us joy .... and...... can be irritating as hell!
