With the recognition that the word "sustainable" has many conotations, I would like to offer this information for perspective and consideration. It is the best and strongest resounding example of this word that I have found yet. I am starting to explore more of this site to see what obstacles they may have come across and what has worked also, because currently Ashland is organizing to address the issue of sustainability/localization as well.

Granted, this is an existing city, but I feel their experiences may have some relation to this effort(BM) as well. I am sure that many of you have at least heard of the ecological footprint and are probably familiar with it, but so was I and this still was amazing to listen to and watch.

To have him "spell it out", is quite clarifying.

Dr. Rees is the originator of the Ecological Footprint concept, which provides a comprehensive way of calculating the environmental impact of a country, city or individual.

Since its introduction in the early 1990s, this approach has won wide acceptance as an effective method of summarizing the human impact on the planet, of everything from food production and land use, to greenhouse gases and pollution.

AUDIO PRESENTATION(located at bottom of page in green box)

Listen to Dr. Bill Rees' lecture, illustrated by his slides.

The talk has been divided into four sections for convenience of listening. The slides are directly linked to the sound.

Once you have begun the "show", there are buttons to allow you to stop and start it. In addition, "Previous Slide" and "Next Slide" buttons will take you back and forward to the place in the talk where that slide appears. There may be a slight delay when utilizing these buttons.

Enjoy!
