What would the economy of BMC be based on? (and yes, there has to be one so that the federal/state/local government doesn't have a right to seize the property for tax evasion.)

Re: Economy of BMC
Tue, November 8, 2005 - 12:59 PMWould a nonprofit with donations for support make it under the fed-state tax system?
Feel part of the beauty and deep lessons for some at BurningM is it's gift economy.

Re: Economy of BMC
Wed, November 9, 2005 - 3:11 AMI like the idea of a gift-economy without any real private ownership. A sort of radical collectivism, where any resources over and above those needed to survive could be looked at as not even belonging to the town, but rather the township acting as caretakers for it. Caretakers take better care of things than owners. As soon as someone is convinced they own something, they take it for granted. As soon as that happens, the first major road-block to social freedom catches the rear bumper, and soon, you're in a tail-spin.
Of course, I haven't paid my taxes for a couple years. I could be wrong, but I believe that increased climatological changes are going to crash the world economy, and then taxes, and paper money, and banks, and insurance....none of it will matter. What would matter would be the community of builders who cherish and support each other for the benefit of all.
I love you guys. -

Re: Economy of BMC
Wed, November 9, 2005 - 8:05 AMWe love you too Michael, even if you are a nutjob.
So here's the deal... something like a permanent city is going to have certain obligations under state and federal law for taxation of goods, the assessment of taxes for "gifts," and property taxes. If a collective were formed somewhere they would still be required to pay for those things. Even a non-profit corporaton might not get tax-free status because of the type of services it does or does not provide to the communities it serves.
As for caretaker vs. ownership. Michael I do not think you provide any evidence what-so-ever for your agument. I think there are pros and cons for both sides.
I think that if the BMC is going to operate at all like BRC then the economic choices will have to be left up to individuals to make on their own contributions.

Re: Economy of BMC
Wed, November 9, 2005 - 10:01 AMFeel things like property taxes the land payments and insurance may be paid out of tickets sold with sales tax to those that want to come but don't have the time or ability to contribute in other ways yet other than in cash. As people grow they may choose to find other ways to be able contribute. Believe that any gift under $10.000 is tax exempt but if someone wants to give me more I'll pay the tax gladly.
Pray this tribes work toward manifesting BMC's vision statement is not about arguments but simply sharing the visions we have without judging others.
Will also share my vision of supporting others. Michael your feeling that caretakers may have more motivation than an owner makes sense to me. As a caretaker they would be earning their welcoming. In contrast an owner may dictate to all what is required for their welcoming.
Welcoming;Freewil
