Here is a place where people who want to be more sustainable can camp together and share resoruces on this forum.
The staff is in full support of this and will offer their headquarters in SF as a place for people to do workshops, ectc. and have meetings on this subject. Let's do it and bring all the nodes together. It is time :)

here is more info:

HOPE VILLAGE!!

Burning Man 2006 Theme Camp

A village focused on permaculture as a way of living, and implementing sustainability on the playa. A place to integrate different ways of living sustainability and communities that want to set an example beyond the playa.

The Village intends to collaborate with Alternative Energy Zone, Earth Guardians, Recycle camp, and include camps focused on a similar theme- building a larger network with examples allowing more education on the playa.

Overview:
HOPE village will be a nexus of information and teachers on sustainable living in a myriad of ways. We will serve as an example of how to live at Black Rock City sustainably, an inspiration for the years to come and how to take this way of living back home. There will be workshops prior to, on the playa, and after Burning Man for sustainable living techniques, permaculture, and ways to build strong resource networks at home in local communities. We will be a place for people of like mind to share space and learn new techniques. We will create the village with as many possible entry points for people to do burning man in a more healthy, green and sustainable way.

On the application for those who want to camp and participate in HOPE Village must explain how their system is sustainable on the playa and how they will implement their sustainable system back into the communities they live in. As well as how much room is needed and resources they bring so we can matrix the needs, stack functions, and share resources.

HOPE Village aspires be in contact with all of the regional contacts and help place people who want to camp in a sustainable village at Burning Man. HOPE Village would also like to direct people from the Burning Man website for ways of “thinking ahead” about the resources available for creating a sustainable camp and be hospitable for those who are interested in camping with and expanding this network. With that HOPE Village will aspire to maintain an activities calendar of community minded and sustainable events, and share stories and information with the Jack Rabbit Speaks. We encompass the “DO- acracy” system- if someone sees something, or possibilities, DO IT!! We will be available to help in the process of Greening in the office to educate people, and resources for these products such as www.greenearthofficesupply.com and celebrate past efforts made by the BM staff. www,greenbuildingresourcecenter.grb.com

Observation
First is looking at the actual ecosystem of the playa itself. Including the historical context of this place; how it evolved from a water body to a dried out lakebed. Then how it recharges soil, water, etc. how much rainfall, wind, etc has to happen before the playa is 'recharged' and cleansed of the footprint of each person and Burning Man in total. We will look deeper into other impacts of the land, such as volcanic activities that lead to the hot springs nearby, water sources, etc. In our conclusion we will create an interactive exhibit that illustrates the point of 'impact' and the history of the land.

Community education/ communication:
BM WEBSITE:
On the Burning Man Website- we would maintain these areas in coordination with Camera Girl: Use Technology as a means of education and communication. Have an area for enviro -education on the website with links to more information.

• Provide information about “thinking ahead”- a Permaculture survival guide for the playa to increase participation in sustainable thinking education and community endeavors.

• Supply links and information about the Village and resources for sustainable living out on the playa.

• Including different pages through links sponsored by different communities/ topics in HOPE Village The deeper you go, the more you know about how to be sustainable on the playa. It is the rabbit hole.

• An on-line resource directory, a haves & needs list (for those interested in HOPE Village with explanation of president for camping in the village.)

• Each interested party explains how their system(s) are sustainable and how it will be or is implemented in their community, bringing it back home.)

• A Forum online through the BM website and supplemented by the evolverproject.com discussion zone for organizational efforts and people interested in being involved in BM sustainability, and where supplies are resourced Updated information through

o Video blogging
o Webcast/ podcast that can be uplinked to the world of people back at home that are not at the playa
• Sections that honor past efforts done at Burning Man and wisdom those participants have to offer. We are a community; let’s help each other out!

• Community education/ permaculture workshops prior to Burning Man in multiple places, such as BM Head Quarters.

Village partners aspire to include and collaborate with:
I. Sarah Haines -“Spit fire Agency” worked on Julia Butterflies shows; tree-free paper Co.; Connector on Music scene.
II. Veggie-bus – kids on the “Unified Bus” front spreading seeds of education
III. Remnants of Brain Village
IV. AEZ: Alternative Energy Zone; Energy Park
V. Earth Guardians
VI. Recycle camp
VII. Field guy-> experiments ->-flaming lotus girls using different techniques/ products.
VIII. Educational zones and “think tanks” for lectures and workshops.
IX. Many camps & networks with work in similar projects- put the call out on the website, the web in general, and personal networks with the vision to spread.
X. Mobile veggie oil education unit/ prototype. (Ben D.’s dragon, or the she Horse)
XI. Pepe & old school Artists
XII. Mikeal & Pacific domes, spirit temple
XIII. Twist’s labyrinth
XIV. Elonifer’s chakra wishing tree of life art installation,
XV. Myriad Possibilities (Evolver Project) media and non-profit organized to bring people of like mind together.
XVI. Burn Clean Initiative
XVII. Water Woman (outdoor shower)
XVIII. Community kitchen (s) – a central one and each camp should have their own system.
XIX. Think Tank , educational workshop space (Vanessa) made of natural materials from the playa.

Education out on the Playa: in the “think tank” made of natural materials.
• Seminars out on the playa (Larry Harvey a& Larry Santoyo)
• City Repair presentation; SHE Horse- mobile permaculture unit.
• Rocket stoves and workshops
• Information kiosk… resource directory
• Haves & needs list in Center Camp- (camp locations of who can take home used wood/ material from art projects, who has excess material/ supplies prior to set-up and after, activities happening off the playa) – this info would be shared in the in the handbook & website.
• How artists can use this knowledge (using recycled material), and bring it back to the community
• Measurements of use/ eco footprint on and off the playa (how people get there, energy put in, and what systems/ materials they use on the playa)

More General Ideas:
• Solar cookers - building clay ovens, baking stove out of clay/mud. Sustainable way of cooking food/bread.
• Rocket stoves
• Sprout Kitchen
• Harvesting the wind and solar ... wind sculptures.
• No cars on playa-- only bio-fuel/ electric art cars.
• Implementing sustainable systems into communities off the playa
• Include the Biodiesel Bus from Kopali as an art-car for the camp
• Have interactive computers with DVD’s educate and inspire
• The related camps can help to invite participation and collaboration on such a project/event, which can be loosely affiliated with BM.
• Encourage more bikes and racks on playa.
• Education-> ACTION
• Create a matrix of all the problems to arise to solutions
• Generators -> business opportunity for community member-> large amount of bio-diesel
• Write up a proposal for government-> Bio-diesel
• Use the commercial Bio-diesel tap in Reno to our advantage
• Permaculture Course- observing/design philosophies @ BMHQ
• Use the BMHQ for community workshops, etc (coordinate with Blue)
• Subtle motions to be incredibly effective; outline eco-sound ways/techniques
• Veggie oil for lamp lights instead of kerosene

We understand that this is a huge undertaking, and there is experience to guide the process. The most important aspect we want to get out of this process is educating people about resources available to live a more full and healthy life, thinking about the environment.

In whichever ways you can help guide this process along, whether it be through resources, ideas, recommendations, or moral support we are appreciative of it all, and grateful for the work you've done thus far. Thank you for all your efforts thus far. We look forward to working with you indifferent capacities.

    That sounds pretty cool.
The waste of burning man has always bothered me. Not just the ecological waste, but also the massive resources put into something which is mostly temporary.
I have gone 6 times, but skipped last year in favor of the work I am doing in Mexico.

I am building a permaculture farm artspace thing on 83 acres in the Mexican highlands near Patzcuaoro.

I am considering going this year to meet other folks with permaculture notions.

Waste doesn't bother me at all, in fact it is what attracts me to it.
      • It makes me fucking nuts how they handle their money and thier garbage and their fuel and their tools and their trucks and the art and the time and it's just all so ineffecient. But that's how it is when it gets big like this. We used to run it, 3 guys. No waste. I don't *realy* blame them but I kinda think they could commit to improving 10% a year forever. But they have their own agenda. If they are gonna do anyting it's because someone else is gonna do all the work adn they just get to take the credit. Just like I'd do it if it was mine,,,,, wink wink....

I ran out of energy to do the precycled man this this year. I kinda am pissed at myself. Just too much rain to start collecting. I promise I'm gonna do it next year. By then maybe I'll be able to just do it myself. I'm planning to be well liked this year. Hated again next year. Switch 'em out......
  • The average hunter-gatherer or subsitance horticulturalist works about 20 hours a week. It always seemed to me that number could be halved (or further reduced) by a comprehensive world permaculture study, and the emergence of best practices for given materials, terains, cultures, etc.

    Just a thought.

    Anyway, anyone doing solar kilns?

Has anyone invited indigenous crafters to teach? Eigur to teach yurt building, differnt tribes to tach different gardening techniques, etc? No point reinventing the wheel.
