Grindlebone getting ready to get its own site

Grindlebone is finally getting ready to purchase land for it's community/arts space. One of the things we're planning is a bi-yearly small to medium burn and other festival events on what (we hope) will be a 7-10 acre festival site, including fire artt, demonstration, performance, and camping spaces, and we'd love your advice before we get in and actually start building stuff. What things would you like to see in a smallish regional faire site? What things haven't worked for you?

Do us a great favor, if you will. Pop over to www.grindlebone.org, get a bit of flavor of just what kind of weirdos we are, and then come back and give us some advice on how to build your dream event site and how we can integrate that into our communtiy.

Call For Playa Makers!

We are pleased to announced Bay Area Maker Faire 2007!

Organized by the staff of MAKE and CRAFT magazines, Maker Faire is a newfangled fair that brings together science, art, craft an engineering in a fun, energized, and exciting public forum. The aim is to inspire people of all ages to roll up their sleeves and become makers. This family-friendly event showcases the amazing work of all kinds of makers--anyone who is embracing DIY and wants to share their accomplishments with an appreciative audience. Last year, we had 20,000 people at Maker Faire.

Maker Faire Bay Area will take place May 19-20, 2007 at the San Mateo Fairgrounds. We are also adding Maker Faire Austin for October 20-21, 2007 at the Travis County Fairgrounds. This call is primarily for Maker Faire Bay Area but you can indicate if you are interested in participating in Maker Faire Austin.

We encourage you to join the fun and propose a maker exhibit, performance or workshop. You can submit a proposal through the web using the link described below or you can come show us your work at a Maker Faire "audition" on Saturday, February 24 at TechShop in Menlo Park, CA.

http://www.makerfaire.com

Proposals: We invite proposals for Maker workbench exhibits, workshops, presentations and performances for the Maker Faire. We are interested in proposals from individuals as well as from groups such as hobbyist clubs and schools.

Maker Workbench: Our standard setup for Makers is a six-foot long workbench. You can use this workbench to display your work and/or demonstrate how you make something. Some makers don't need workbenches, typically because they have a large object or they set up outside. Please provide a short description of what you make and what you will bring to Maker Faire. Please link to photographs or videos of what you make. Let us know about any requirements you have, such as electricity, Internet, ventilation, etc.

Interactive Performance: We're seeking performances that will engage and entertain the attendees and enable them to interact in a fun way. The performances may be tied to a stage or roving through the fairgrounds as a kind of street theatre. Performances could be musical or theatrical, but they could also be a collaborative building process. For example, you might work with attendees to put something large together in an hour.

Presentation: These includes audio-visual presentations intended for showing a project (or process) that cannot be brought to the faire, or a special project that requires AV resources. These presentations are limited to 20 minutes. Please describe the topic of your presentation and what kind of media (audio/video) that you will have. As a general rule, PowerPoint presentations are not appropriate for this event unless they are unusually entertaining.

Demonstration Workshop: A demonstration workshop is a show-and-tell session on how to make something. We're looking for makers who can demonstrate (and teach) particular skills, techniques or processes. You should start off by explaining your materials and tools and then step-through a build process, sharing your knowledge and interacting with the audience. Sessions should be under 30 minutes in length and may be repeated on the program. Please describe the subject of your workshop and what kind of setup you need for it.

Application Form: Please go to the following URL and fill it out to apply for participation as a maker. http://makerfaire.com/bayarea/2007/proposal/

All proposals will be reviewed and we will notify makers of acceptance via email by March 19, 2007.

NOTE: Presenters whose talks are accepted will receive free registration to Maker Faire. We cannot pay for travel and accommodations. (We do make exceptions under some circumstances.) If you have any questions about participating in Maker Faire, please contact Natalie Villalobos by email: info@makerfaire.com. Please let Natalie know if you plan to come to the audition at TechShop.

Adam Baer, a santa cruz based artist , will be putting a near-life sized Whale Skeleton sculpture deep playa this upcoming burn. It will be composed of 5 gallon buckets(spine),cut up fiberglass water tank (ribs) and the head/flippers/tail will be a combination of plywood/cardboard/fiberglass . Most all of the materials have or will be salvage and recycled in accordance with the eco-groovy theme this year.
This post is an appeal to anyone interested to participating in any phase of its construction/transport/setup/breakdown. What is needed right now is steel pipe(wrist width&larger),plywood scrap, cardboard, fiberglass cloth and bolts of any size. Personpower, support, monitary contributions in whatever measure would be appreciated . Please contact me at : Blazin Raisin@tribe.net or spacebaer@hailmail.net or phone at (831) 420 -1522 . This might be a fun way to ramp up to August and I can get a few people in to BRC early if they are interested in helping with playa setup.

Greening the Burn meeting in SF tonight (Monday) at 6pm, and you can conference call in!

*contact me directly for address & call-in #
thanks!

After Burning Man this year so many people have been excited about what's happening with the theme for 2007, the Green Man, sharing ideas, and wanting to know what Burning Man is doing to be more green and exemplify the theme- as well as where to go with their ideas. So many people have come to me directly (when they should be looking into what department at BM their project idea fits into and filling out a volunteer form off the BM website, rather than asking a passionate volunteer like myself.) I asked for a meeting at BMHQ with the people this all started with in my world- Blue and Camera Girl. They brought in Tom Price, Burners with out Boarders coordinator who had just gotten the go ahead from members of the BM board to help this group move forward faster - with out the red tape. The four of us have been coming up with a plan on how to organize ourselves and our collectives greening powers more efficiently.

Some thing we would like to invite you to is to help out with developing a template for each Burning Man Department to go through and evaluate how green they can be starting with where they are. This can also be helpful in your own life, business, events, and home. A greening template- building off all the ideas explored in the past year on the discussion list, and beyond that with the other amazing organizations, camps, and activities people have been involved in. Please send your template notes back to me and I'll compile them and go over them at the next meeting you are all invited to.

This is the time to bring it in and make what BM is doing for their greening efforts more accountable and tangible this year!! After a couple meetings we think it's time to get more community moving and working together.

We invite you to the....

Semi-Monthly meeting, ie: Green Working Group (GWG) every other Monday at 6pm in SF! come join!!
For directions please RSVP so we know how many people will be coming and be better prepared.

If needed we can arrange some conference calls out of this... just hollar if you are interested!! Also let's car pool and go the biking/ public transit rout (I live in Marin!)

We also want to know how many remote folks are interested
in attending so we can figure out if we need to use the conference
bridge or webcast stuff... so please let us know if you are going to be there for these Monday night meetings.

We will be exploring the greening department templates along with many other pieces at our next Greeners Working Group (GWG) next Monday Dec. 4th at 6pm (west coast time), and every other Monday after that.

Here are some major pieces that we will be moving forward with, and the leaders of those projects- (GWG is everyone who shows up and is committed)

1. Projects Template-
Identify the project, what research and resources are needed, what is already available, what BM dept. this falls in, volunteers on board, project coordinator contact info, etc. Blue is sending out a template for this via example project he is taking on: the LED lights at Porta-potties. (Blue leading)

2. The BM Departments self evaluation sheet. (GWG)

3. BM's website Environmental section launch (Camera Girl leading)

4. identify FAQ's for the website. (GWG)

5. Environmental showcase/ event in the Spring, Sunday April 8th -
following the town hall meeting. (kachina katrina, blue, camera girl, and $teven Raspa/ BM's special event team)

6. Community Lectures/ workshops @ BMHQ - for staff and community (Tom Price leading)

7. Identify goals:
meta goals for event, DPW, Ethos/ measurable, community workshops. (GWG)

8. Continuing on with the encouragement of meeting and discussions- using E-Playa more (is anyone interested in using that and being a voice from this discussion group?)

9. Clean Fuels Transpo (GWG with input/ resources from this list- including the trains discussion, kachina katrina, camera girl)

10. Sharing info/ resources for camping more efficiently and lighter on the Earth with the Theme Camps (Tom Price, kachina katrina, GWG)

11. Having fun in this whole process!! (Everybody!!)

Thank you all for your thoughts, discussions, ambitions, and goals. These are some of the first things this GWG will be meeting about to continue with the organization so the wheels aren't squeaky. There are a lot of projects that will be explored through out this year, Blue and Tom Price will be recording them and going over what departments project coordinators should check into (the ones who bring the idea up is usually the coordinator, unless you have someone readily available to do that work.) DIY community and let's do it together!!

thanks for your time :)

HOPE Village; sustainable village at Burnin gMan

Here is a place where people who want to be more sustainable can camp together and share resoruces on this forum.
The staff is in full support of this and will offer their headquarters in SF as a place for people to do workshops, ectc. and have meetings on this subject. Let's do it and bring all the nodes together. It is time :)

here is more info:

HOPE VILLAGE!!

Burning Man 2006 Theme Camp

A village focused on permaculture as a way of living, and implementing sustainability on the playa. A place to integrate different ways of living sustainability and communities that want to set an example beyond the playa.

The Village intends to collaborate with Alternative Energy Zone, Earth Guardians, Recycle camp, and include camps focused on a similar theme- building a larger network with examples allowing more education on the playa.

Overview:
HOPE village will be a nexus of information and teachers on sustainable living in a myriad of ways. We will serve as an example of how to live at Black Rock City sustainably, an inspiration for the years to come and how to take this way of living back home. There will be workshops prior to, on the playa, and after Burning Man for sustainable living techniques, permaculture, and ways to build strong resource networks at home in local communities. We will be a place for people of like mind to share space and learn new techniques. We will create the village with as many possible entry points for people to do burning man in a more healthy, green and sustainable way.

On the application for those who want to camp and participate in HOPE Village must explain how their system is sustainable on the playa and how they will implement their sustainable system back into the communities they live in. As well as how much room is needed and resources they bring so we can matrix the needs, stack functions, and share resources.

HOPE Village aspires be in contact with all of the regional contacts and help place people who want to camp in a sustainable village at Burning Man. HOPE Village would also like to direct people from the Burning Man website for ways of “thinking ahead” about the resources available for creating a sustainable camp and be hospitable for those who are interested in camping with and expanding this network. With that HOPE Village will aspire to maintain an activities calendar of community minded and sustainable events, and share stories and information with the Jack Rabbit Speaks. We encompass the “DO- acracy” system- if someone sees something, or possibilities, DO IT!! We will be available to help in the process of Greening in the office to educate people, and resources for these products such as www.greenearthofficesupply.com and celebrate past efforts made by the BM staff. www,greenbuildingresourcecenter.grb.com

Observation
First is looking at the actual ecosystem of the playa itself. Including the historical context of this place; how it evolved from a water body to a dried out lakebed. Then how it recharges soil, water, etc. how much rainfall, wind, etc has to happen before the playa is 'recharged' and cleansed of the footprint of each person and Burning Man in total. We will look deeper into other impacts of the land, such as volcanic activities that lead to the hot springs nearby, water sources, etc. In our conclusion we will create an interactive exhibit that illustrates the point of 'impact' and the history of the land.

Community education/ communication:
BM WEBSITE:
On the Burning Man Website- we would maintain these areas in coordination with Camera Girl: Use Technology as a means of education and communication. Have an area for enviro -education on the website with links to more information.

Hi, I joined this tribe b/c I want to build a new deck for my house out of recycled plastic lumber. Since y'all are into sustainable/eco friendly alternative building, I was hoping someone here might be able to give me some pointers.

I have a proposal:

One of you "buildingman" people present a written suggestion to BM LLC that you would like to harvest donated, used materials (wood, mainly) to build the man next year. It would be a winable battle, easy to do and it would maybe start a spark that would make other people consider only building out of scrap lumber (which there is plenty). I can direct you to places in the waste stream where such lumber exists in abundance.

Small, winable battle.

Once you win the battle; your right. Once your right, you can assemble a constituancy using your sucsess. Then you can do whatever you want.

Let me know if you would like my help....

You can take a small step that will go a long way to stop the biggest political and environmental threat we face today. You don't have to spend money. You don't have to volunteer your time.

It's a non-political effort that was launched in April 2005 with Senator John McCain and Robert F Kennedy Jr. to move across the United States via the Internet from one town to the next presenting evidence of the effects of global warming while highlighting people’s concerns and solutions along the way.

Join the Virtual March www.StopGlobalWarming.org. Be with David Whiteside, Walter Cronkite, former CIA director James Woolsey and the millions of others who demand action when the Virtual March reaches Washington, D.C. on Earth Day 2006.

bamboo foundation

hey folks! just stumbled across this tribe and am happy to join in...I noticed in the photo album a lot of pictures of things built out of bamboo.

a few years back, I think it was '99, I was in Bali, and while I was there a friend of mine who lived there and was acting as tour guide took me to the Bamboo Foundation in Ubud. They are a group doing lots of work to promote the use of bamboo as a building material in Indonesia, because of it grows quickly, is very strong, some species are native to the location, and it is an alternative to cutting down the rainforest hardwoods. Their whole compound was built of it, and they were using traditional building techniques, which I was able to watch. It was a really beautiful place, which also served as a bed and breakfast. They are doing some good work to promote a sustainable solution in an area of the world where the rainforest and all of the species unique to it are quickly being gobbled up. Take a look at their web page:

Here is an excerpt from a great thread that has started in the Year 2012 tribe
http://2012.tribe.net/

It speaks to the potential of intention, community, creativity, compassion...

Here is an invitation to participate, if there is willingness or desire. The more serious input and collaboration the better. It going to take the many perspectives shared with true heart intention to work on this.

Wed, December 28, 2005 - 1:01 AM
prophecy for the new Gregorian year
http://2012.tribe.net/thread/738d73d8-9759-41c7-8665-03ffa524d980

Here is an interesting collection of articles on RIFD technology, aka “The Mark
of the Beast.” http://nwowatcher.com/smf/index.php?topic=7.0.

For those who haven’t seen it, the 2005 UN Ecosystems Assessment can be found here: http://www.millenniumassessment.org/en/Article.aspx?id=61

As you know, the oceans are 90% fished out, most of the world’s ecosystems are on the point of collapse, resources severely depleted, etcetera.

It sure is fun – all this speculating about 2012, the return of the Goddess,
Thelemic Magick, indigenous prophesies, light working, and all the rest.

However, a question goes unaddressed: How are we going to change the world
situation and actually salvage this planet before it is too late? How much time
do we have? How are we going to work together to get this done? What is our
plan of action?

(In what follows, I am going to use the words “We” and “Our” rhetorically,
referring to the group I consider to be the evolutionary edge of the
progressive movement, integrating spiritual, ecological, political, social,
technological perspectives - represented at Burning Man, on Tribe, etc.)

Our time to come up with a strategy and then flawlessly execute it can probably be measured in months, perhaps a year or two, max.

As we all must know, we are currently in the midst of a mass extinction crisis.
David Ulansey has documented this at length:
http://www.well.com/user/davidu/extinction.html

Within thirty years, 25 percent of all species will be extinct. By that point,
we may well have entered an inevitable situation of complete biospheric
collapse and self-extinction. If we are going to avert the worst and most
totalizing effects of this crisis, we cannot start in two or three years – we
have to start now.

For people involved in creating a world wide collaborative art project representative of the critical tits ride at burningman. This project involves women from all over the world gathering on the full moon of each month and having a small/large gathering where they assemble a lifesize sculpture representative of a critical tits rider. As each group of women from all over the world assemble these sculptures on the playa in 2006 we *women* will unvail the largest collaborative art installation on the playa and in BurningMan history.

WE need your help to make this collaborative dream come true...

Be a part of your *female* burning community.
Participate in an art installation that will collaborate women from all around the world on the playa for BM06.

The object of this party is for the women participating to bond and create a lifesize sculpture of a critical tits rider to present on the playa with other female created sculptures. When all sculptures are presented together on the playa it will represent the world largest critical tits ride, and will bring women together throughout our burning communities on the full moons of each month in 2006.

Get involved in creating a world wide collaborative art project representative of the critical tits ride at burningman.
Dr. Bill Ress' presentation on the ecological footprint (a great resource)

With the recognition that the word "sustainable" has many conotations, I would like to offer this information for perspective and consideration. It is the best and strongest resounding example of this word that I have found yet. I am starting to explore more of this site to see what obstacles they may have come across and what has worked also, because currently Ashland is organizing to address the issue of sustainability/localization as well.

Granted, this is an existing city, but I feel their experiences may have some relation to this effort(BM) as well. I am sure that many of you have at least heard of the ecological footprint and are probably familiar with it, but so was I and this still was amazing to listen to and watch.

To have him "spell it out", is quite clarifying.

Peace...

Dr. Rees is the originator of the Ecological Footprint concept, which provides a comprehensive way of calculating the environmental impact of a country, city or individual.

Since its introduction in the early 1990s, this approach has won wide acceptance as an effective method of summarizing the human impact on the planet, of everything from food production and land use, to greenhouse gases and pollution.

AUDIO PRESENTATION(located at bottom of page in green box)

Listen to Dr. Bill Rees' lecture, illustrated by his slides.

The talk has been divided into four sections for convenience of listening. The slides are directly linked to the sound.

Once you have begun the "show", there are buttons to allow you to stop and start it. In addition, "Previous Slide" and "Next Slide" buttons will take you back and forward to the place in the talk where that slide appears. There may be a slight delay when utilizing these buttons.

Enjoy!

Least populated states

Here are the stastics for the six least populated states (2000 Census)

45 Delaware 753,538
46 South Dakota 733,133
47 North Dakota 633,666
48 Alaska 619,500
49 Vermont 593,740
50 Wyoming 479,602

The best climates for these 6 are in Vermont and Delaware. However Delaware is a small state and has high property prices. Wyoming is the least populated and is a large state with lots of cheap land.

If we wanted to build a real city that existed year round and embraced the same ethics as Burning Man (minus the burning down of the city every year) we would have to develop some sort of economy that would allow the city's citizens to pay their applicable taxes.

Here are the respective tax laws by state:

------------------
WYOMING:
Sales Taxes
State Sales Tax: 4% (prescription drugs exempt); counties have the option of adding up to 2% in additional taxes. There is a county lodging tax that varies from 2% to 4% and is added to the other sales taxes.
Gasoline Tax: 14 cents/gallon
Diesel Fuel Tax: 14 cents/gallon
Gasohol Tax: 14 cents/gallon
Cigarette Tax: 60 cents/pack of 20

Personal Income Taxes
No state personal income tax
Retirement Income Taxes: Not taxed, including that received from other states.

Property Taxes
Statutes limit property tax rate increases. For county revenue, the property tax rate cannot exceed 12 mills (or 1.2 percent) of assessed value. For cities and towns, the rae is limited to 8 mills (0.8 percent). With very few exceptions, state law limits the property tax rate for all governmental purposes. A June 2000 survey by the Wyoming Taxpayers Association found that the state's residential property tax rate of 0.735% of market value compares to an average of 1.4% for surrounding states and 1.2% to 1.5% average tax rate for all states, depending on the price of the home. Nominal property tax rates, or mill levies, vary widely among the over 400 separate government bodies in Wyoming that levy property tax.
Inheritance and Estate Taxes
There is no inheritance and the estate tax is limited and related to federal estate tax collection.

----------

Oregon:

OREGON
Sales Taxes
State Sales Tax: None
Gasoline Tax: * 24 cents/gallon
Diesel Fuel Tax: * 24 cents/gallon
Gasohol Tax: * 24 cents/gallon
(Local fuel taxes may add 1 to 3 cents)
Cigarette Tax: $1.18/pack of 20

Personal Income Taxes
Tax Rate Range: Low - 5%; High - 9%
Income Brackets: ** Lowest - $2,600; Highest - $6,500
Number of Brackets: 3
Personal Tax Credits: Single - $151; Married - $302; Dependents - $151
Additional Credits: Credit equal to 40% of federal credit
Standard Deduction: Single - $1,670; Married filing jointly - $3,345;
Additional Deduction: Single over 65 - $1,200; Married over 65 filing jointly $2,000
Medical/Dental Deduction: Full only for age 59 or older, if itemized.
Federal Income Tax Deduction: $5,000 ($2,500 if married filing separately)
Retirement Income Taxes: Federal income tax rules generally determine the amount of your pension that is taxed by Oregon. However, you may subract some pensions on your Oregon return that were taxed on your federal return. Pensions not taxed are Social Security benefits, Veterans Administration benefits and Railroad Board benefits. Oregon allows a subtraction for part or all of the payments you receive from the federal pension system. Generally, retirement income is subject to Oregon tax. A tax credit of up to 9% of taxable pension income is available to recipients of pension income, including most private pension income, whose household income was less than $22,5000 (single) and $45,000 (joint), and who received less than $7,500/$15,000 in Social Security or Railroad Retirement benefits. The credit is the lesser of tax liability or 9% of taxable pension income.

Retired Military Pay: Federal retirees, including military personnel, may be able to subtract some or all of their federal pension income. This includes benefits paid to the retiree or to the surviving spouse. The subtraction amount is based on the number of months of federal service before and after October 1, 1991. Retirees can subtract their entire federal pension if all the months of federal service occurred before October 1, 1991. If there are no months of service before October 1, 1991, retirees cannot subtract any federal pension. If service included months before and after October 1, 1991, retirees can subtract a percentage of their pension income.
Military Disability Retired Pay: Disability Portion - Length of Service Pay; Member on September 24, 1975 - No tax; Not Member on September 24, 1975 - Taxed, unless combat incurred. Retired Pay - Based solely on disability: Member on September 24, 1975 - No tax; Not Member on September 24, 1975 - Taxed, unless all pay based on disability and disability resulted from armed conflict, extra-hazardous service, simulated war, or an instrumentality of war.
VA Disability Dependency and Indemnity Compensation: Not subject to federal or state taxes
Military SBP/SSBP/RCSBP/RSFPP: Generally subject to state taxes for those states with income tax. Check with state department of revenue office.

Property Taxes
Oregon does not grant homeowners a homestead exemption. Tax rates are set by the counties and any special considerations are levied by county officials. Homeowners 62 or older may delay paying property taxes based on certain income criteria. The State offers a Disabled Citizen Property Tax Deferral Program and a Senior Citizen Property Tax Deferral Program. Both deferral programs allow qualified taxpayers to defer payment of their property taxes on their homes. The state pays the taxes to the county, maintains the account, and charges 6% simple interest, which also is deferred. Taxes are owed when the taxpayer receiving the deferral dies, sells the property, ceases to live permanently on the property, or the property changes ownership.

To qualify for either program, the taxpayer must live on the property and have a total household income of less than $34,000 for the year before application. Participants may remain on either program as long as their federal adjusted gross income does not exceed that amount. If a participant's income exceeds the $34,000 limit, part of the taxes still may be deferred. Participants can come in and out of the programs if their income changes. In addition to meeting the income limitation and property ownership requirement, disabled persons must be receiving or be eligible to receive federal Social Security Disability benefits to qualify. Residents must be 62 years old or older to qualify for the Senior Citizen Property Tax Deferral Program. Call 800-356-4222 or 503-376-4988 for details.

Inheritance and Estate Taxes
An Oregon inheritance tax return is required to be filed whenever a federal estate tax return (Form 706) is required to be filed. For a resident decedent, Oregon taxes real property and tangible personal property located in Oregon and intangible personal property wherever it is located. For a nonresident decedent, Oregon taxes real property, tangible personal property, and intangible personal property located in Oregon. An exemption is allowed for intangible personal property located in Oregon if a like exemption is allowed by the state of residence.

For further information, visit the Oregon Department of Revenue site or call 503-378-4988.

There are several ways that land could be purchased for BMC (Building Man City.)

Here's one idea (of many) for land purchase:
First an umbrella non-profit corporation could be set up. This corporation (having the rights of a US citizen) would then purchase a large swath of land. Money for this purchase can be aquired either through donations or through the sale of shares of the non-profit. At a set point the non-profit would then purchase a large piece of land, somewhere where land is cheap.

Here's on idea (of many) for the allocation of purpose of the purchased land:

The non-profit that purchased the land would draw up a civic plan. Because this is a permanent city real care should be taken to place large sound structures further away from residential zones. I would propose four zones: civic (for things like sewage treatement, garbage dumps, jail, civic offices, snow plow storage etc...), high sound residential, art (like the open space on the playa), low sound residential. A street system should be planned.

Heres an idea (of many) of how to allocate the land for individual usage:

The non-profit corporation would then begin taking applications for land usage. Land is then assigned (or denied) based on these applications for a leased period of time (varied by applicant.) The lease price will be based on projected property taxes, and civic costs, for the amount of land that is allocated. At the end of the lease the land is either reallocated, or the lease is renewed. The factors for reallocation by the non-profit could be a set-list of criteria which are either met, or not during the term of the lease, or it could be based on voting by the board that runs the non-profit. Since share holders elect the board this will closely resemble a civic council.
