Witch and Hare

AN old witch, in days of yore, lived in this neighbourhood; and whenever she wanted money she would assume the shape of a hare, and would send out her grandson to tell a certain huntsman who lived hard by that he had seen a hare sitting at such a particular spot, for which he always received the reward of sixpence. After this deception had many times been practised, the dogs turned out, the hare pursued, often seen but never caught, a sportsman of the party began to suspect, in the language of the tradition, "that the devil was in the dance," and there would be no end to it. The matter was discussed, a justice consulted, and a clergyman to boot; and it was thought that, however clever the devil might be, law and church combined would be more than a match for him. It was therefore agreed that, as the boy was singularly regular in the hour at which he came to announce the sight of the hare, all should be in readiness for a start the instant such information was given: and a neighbour of the witch, nothing friendly to her, promised to let the parties know directly the old woman and her grandson left the cottage and went off together; the one to be hunted, and the other to set on the hunt.

The news came, the hounds were unkennelled, and huntsmen and sportsmen set off with surprising speed. The witch, now a hare, and her little colleague in iniquity, did not expect so very speedy a turn out; so that the game was pursued at a desperate rate, and the boy, forgetting himself in a moment of alarm, was heard to exclaim: "Run, Granny, run; run for your life!" At last the pursuers lost the hare, and she once more got safe into the cottage by a little hole in the door; not large enough to admit a hound in chase. The huntsman and all the squires with their train lent a hand to break open the door, yet could not do it till the parson and the justice came up; but as law and church were certainly designed to break through iniquity, even so did they now succeed in bursting the magic bonds that opposed them. Upstairs they all went. There they found the old hag bleeding, and covered with wounds, and still out of breath. She denied she was a hare, and railed at the whole party. "Call up the hounds," said the huntsman, "and let us see what they take her to be; maybe we may yet have another hunt."

On hearing this the old woman cried quarter. The boy dropped on his knees, and begged hard for mercy, which was granted on condition of its being received together with a good whipping; and the huntsman, having long practised amongst the hounds, now tried his hand on other game. Thus the old woman escaped a worse fate for the time present; but on being afterwards put on her trial for bewitching a young woman and making her spit pins, the tale just told was given as evidence against her, before a particularly learned judge, and a remarkably sagacious jury, and the old woman finished her days, like a martyr, at the stake.

But Jason’s situation is very, very bad. At this moment, Amma is asking for everyone to send prayers for a peaceful transition. And prayers of strength for Lucas, who has never known adult life without Jason.

None of us can believe this has happened. I can’t believe I’ll never again punch Jason in the arm and tell him how hot he looks. Please do send cards to the address Susan posted. The support will help Lucas more than you can know.

Friday night... Update on Jason

The latest that I have from Amma...
They did a pre-op test and decided, based on that, not to operate after all. The pressure on his brain, while still pretty high, had stabilized somewhat, and they decided to wait and see if things would improve without it. Maybe the swelling will now begin to go down. It's what we're hoping for now.

Meanwhile, an ear, nose & throat specialist said that because of the facial injuries, he won't have sight in his left eye or hearing in his left ear. I know that if Amma were near a keyboard, she would ask everyone to send Reiki and all other forms of healing energy focusing on his sight and hearing.

Let's keep up the thoughts and prayers! We've avoided the extremely risky surgery for now.... With all of us behind him, he'll improve quickly and have a recovery beyond his doctors' expectations!

So mote it be.

Please, send all the extra love and prayers you have right now. They are about to take Jason into surgery now for a very risky procedure. She is terrified now that she won’t be there in time… before he dies.

I truly believe the procedure will work and that Jason, a young, strong man, will win this. Jason, Amma, Lucas, and everyone else involved needs every last ounce of inspiration and healing vibes surrounding Jason in that Bright Pink Bubble of Prayers.

KEY WEST, Florida (Reuters) - A game of cat and mouse is under way between the U.S. government and Florida's Ernest Hemingway Home & Museum over the fate of dozens of felines roaming the former home of the Nobel Prize-winning author.

The claws are out over whether the 47 cats that live on the grounds where Hemingway wrote "To Have and Have Not" should be caged or even allowed to remain on the lush subtropical property, one of the Florida Keys' major tourist attractions.

Around half are six-toed, or polydactyl.

U.S. Animal and Plant Inspection Service officials argue that the house, listed as a National Historic Landmark since 1968, requires a federal Animal Welfare License, like a circus or zoo, in order to keep housing the cats.

The city of Key West and Monroe County, which includes Key West and the other islands in the Keys chain off Florida's southeastern tip, are fighting back against federal intervention.

"I think it's kind of sad that a government agency would be spending taxpayers' money on this," said Linda Mendez, the home's event director and author of the "Hemingway Museum Cats" souvenir book. "We're against caging them because they're not used to it."

The museum opened in 1964 and estimates it has spent nearly $200,000 (97,800 pounds) to comply with federal animal regulations that require proper food storage, veterinary care and containment, such as mesh atop the 6-foot (2-metre) wall around the property.

'WHISPURRER'

The U.S. Department of Agriculture said the museum is subject to federal regulations because it promotes the cats online, exhibits them during paid tours, uses them in advertisements and markets them on souvenirs.

It plans to send veterinarian Terry Curtis, an animal behaviorist from the University of Florida -- already dubbed the "cat whispurrer" by locals -- to observe the cats' mental state and physical condition on July 23.

The Hemingway Museum failed three compliance inspections and several cats have been injured or killed since October 2003, the USDA said.

"In 2005 alone, there were 12 occasions when cats left the property; in two of these cases, Hemingway cats were killed by cars," it said.

A federal judge has ordered the two sides to work out their differences.

The spat began when the Florida Keys Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals lodged a complaint in 2003, spurred on by a former Hemingway House volunteer.

According to the tale told to 400 to 600 daily visitors, a ship's captain gave Hemingway his first polydactyl cat, Snowball, and many of the current felines are Snowball's descendants.

The macho writer, an avid fisherman and sportsman, was photographed with cats at his homes in Key West, Cuba and Paris.

But one book claims the cats are descendants of a Key West neighbour's pet crippled by a bullet Hemingway fired to put it out of its misery after it was injured, possibly by a car. The neighbour's cat lost an eye but survived.

TORONTO (Reuters) - Thieves in central Canada stripped an orchard of some 200 pounds (90 kilograms) of ripe Saskatoonberries, leaving police and farmers baffled at the work needed for a relatively low-price haul.

"There's not a whole lot that we know, other than it would have taken a substantial effort to clean off that many bushes of their berries, in any time period really," said Chris Ballard, a spokesman with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in Manitoba.

A local farm newspaper said the thieves apparently had to haul their load across a ditch, over a fence and through other rows of berry bushes, before leaving the Winnipeg-area farm with the loot -- which could be worth some C$700 (329 pounds).

Saskatoonberries, also known as Juneberries, are similar to blueberries although a little smaller. Pre-picked berries sell for about C$3.50 a pound.

Capybaras and squirrel monkeys, unlikely neighbors in the wild, are living in the same enclosure at a zoo outside Tokyo and so far, they're loving it.

The monkeys ride on the capybara's backs and kiss the world's largest rodents, who tolerate their tricks. But in the wild, their paths do not cross -- capybara's live on river banks while the monkeys live in forests.

Keepers at the Tobu zoo said it took the capybaras years to tolerate the monkeys.

Both species hail from South America and are not carnivores but at another Japanese zoo, a capybara mauled a monkey to death in their shared enclosure, proof that the cohabitation of the species is not always peaceful.

"This may simply suggest that all four Capybaras living here happen to be too gentle and meek to offend the monkeys," said Kenji Narukawa, the zoo keeper in charge of capybara and squirrel monkey enclosure.

"I don't think this necessarily means that capybaras and squirrel monkeys are compatible in general."

Since local media reported on the odd pairing, hundreds of visitors have visited the zoo to see the animals in action.

"They are so cute. I am very happy to see such a rare couple." said one visitor, 35-year-old Motoyasu Miyasaka.

Awen is in the hospital

Day before yesterday, Awen was hit by a car in Rio de Janeiro. As of last night he was still in hospital, "under observation" for a concussion / skull fracture he received. His sister reported that he is in good spirits and doing well. At least I think that's what "seu estado de saude e bom" means!

Please send healing energy and all good vibes, prayers and positive thoughts in his direction. I know that will make a big difference in a speedy recovery.

Among my many insights I had I 2006, I discovered New Year wishes messages are but revealing to other what you wish for yourself. Naturally, not many people wish the same, but we all could use specific blessings to help us get our very intimate, personal and idiosyncratic blessings and wishes.

My new year wish to you is simple: I wish the Smoke on your Mirror dissipates and reveals to you how feeble, useless and self-destructive grandiose, clique mentality, dependency and silly games are for a Shining Star like you. I wish you strength to stare and thirst for the Truth that is revealed just before you, when you clear your eyes and dive in the crystal clarity of your true Self. And see the Beauty that is there.

She's back, and she's badder than ever

I am a reasonably nice person with a strong inner bitch—and if you've ever done a little "me appreciation" when you're supposed to be shopping for others, then she might lurk inside you, too. Luckily, I've found the foolproof plan for getting your consumer lust under control this holiday season.

My inner bitch made her first seasonal cameo this year on a well-intended mission downtown to do some early shopping for my brother's girlfriend, who could almost be a Candace Bushnell character. Thus was I led into temptation, and I buckled under the pressure (but the boots were screaming "Buy me!"). And that was when I had my moment of clarity. The truth is, splurging is the only way to satisfy the inner bitch. Splurging. Damn straight.

On Your Mark: Before you release your inner bitch, keep this in mind: Seattle is not a town that encourages bitchy behavior. Too many people adhere to inclusive politics and good moral values. More to the point, there's too much fleece. This means that you have to work harder and look badder to make people realize that all the sweetness and light just won't cut it anymore.

Get Set: The inner bitch hates to budget. Appeasing her for under $100 won't happen—you have to whip out the credit card and throw caution to the wind. Libations will help, the more expensive the better. In fact, you might want to flex your Cruella Maximus muscle by heading to the W Hotel and ordering several rounds of their Emerald Drops (yummy green stuff in a wide-lipped martini glass, $8.50). I don't know about you, but spending excessively on drinks puts me in a great mood to financially self-destruct. Note: Bringing a companion who is well acquainted with their own inner bitch is crucial for emergency emotional and financial backup.

Go! As Manolo Blahnik said, "My shoes are not fashion. They are gestures; objects that happen to be fashion." Take this lofty quote as inspiration—what you are doing is not ridiculously self-indulgent, it just seems like it. If this seems confusing, stop thinking: Just Do It. (Are you getting a frisson of irony?)

The first thing you should do is beat a path to Fast Forward on Pine, the only place in Seattle where my personal inner bitch could ever be satisfied. First to get whipped off the rack were a pair of scrumptious Chompol Serrimont boot-cut leather trousers ($645 for men, $599 for women), with the red faux fur cropped Ardeche jacket ($239) a close second. Last but not least came a knee-length, sexy-as-hell blue Vivienne Westwood skirt ($398). Ahhhh.

Next I headed down to Ped, the best place in town for big-city-worthy boots and bags. This is where I found the silver Sigerson Morrison slide ($244)—along the lines of suit-of-armor meets festive evening wear—not to mention the red leather boots ($321). And the Gap thinks they know "holiday." If we're talking bags, I have one thing to say: Mapuche leather purses ($200-$300). What more could you want than '70s Stevie Nicks crossbred with Shaft?

When it comes to holiday party attire, my advice is to try a seamstress. Nothing will drive the inner bitch more insane than seeing someone else in that "but it was made for me" sequined top from Bebe. Especially if they look better in it. Quel horreur! However, barring the seamstress, you should head across the street from Ped and browse at Ardour, where I found some love in the form of a shimmering magenta silk dress by Dosa ($270). Ardour's display racks, arranged by color in almost every color, are totally dishy.

If, for some nefarious reason, your personal inner bitch can't find satisfaction in a badass boutique, Barneys is the best place to go. When you get there, it's all about the fabulously vintage-looking but gorgeously new pea green Marni fur ($5,640). Reminder: It's not time to get righteous about the bunnies unless you live the life of a vegan—and if that's the case, you're excused to get a second-hand pea coat instead. My non-bitch recycling self wears and loves one every day. And such items are, of course, easier on the pocketbook as well. Not that the inner bitch is worried. Ahem. Moving on.

If you're going to support big department stores, do me a favor: Stay away from those ubiquitous black nylon Prada bags. If I see one more on the street, I might pass out from boredom. Let's face it: You have to drop cash for label cache, so you're better off going for the tough-girl Prada leather baseball-collar jacket ($1,390)—at least then you'll know the ship sank from a meteor instead of a mouse.

I celebrated my spree over cocktails back at the W Hotel, surrounded by boxes and bags—okay, just one bag, but I paid dearly for it—toasting myself and my best inner-bitch friend. It's so easy, and even environmental! Once people stop being such goddamn martyrs and start splurging on themselves, we can stop the circle of lies ("I love the snowflake applique sweater!") and make more room in the landfills. One last point: More photographs are taken around the holidays than almost any other time of year. Is it really the best time to skimp?

Do you:

A. Give a card or treat of some kind (but no cash) because it's the thought that counts and I really can't afford 10x $10-15 dollar tips per year?

B. Give a cash tip because they are underpaid and kind of depend on these tips at this time of year; besides they are nice and deserve it?

I am SO excited.

At work we've just signed onto a "suite" of reference ebooks. Oh, yawn, you say? Well, not everyone is as geeky as me, but who wouldn't love to look through "Rawson's Dictionary of Euphemisms and Other Doubletalk"?

Sorry, it is only available to the students of our college, but if you'd like for me to look up anything... anything at all... I'll do it and post it here.

What this dictionary does is it takes the phrase you're looking for and shows how it has been used. So, for example, under "highly confidential (or sensitive) source" it says:
"A hidden microphone or wiretap, a bug; FBI-ese, from the long (1924-72) reign of J. Edgar Hoover as director of the Bureau. Such bugs often were emplaced during illegal black bag jobs, with the result that information from them had to be reported discreetly. For example, an agent might say that a *highly placed sensitive source of known reliability* was contacted and furnished items of personality (New York Times, 9/23/80)."

and

"Inanimate highly confidential sources, used in technical surveillance, should not be confused with the animate though usually cold-blooded confidential informant or source and source of information, i.e., an informer, a.k.a. informant. "

Wait, what is a "black bag job?" Hmmmnn... it says here:
"An illegal entry by a government employee, typically a member of the FBI or CIA, in order to gain information or to install a highly confidential source (a bug). "

Today elections in the Netherlands. The Party for the Animals (rights) got 3 of 150 seats in dutch parlement. The (bush sympathising) gouverning partys all lost seats and a major left, social gain for seats. This means forming a gouvernment will be hard for neo-liberalism and we wil be unstable for a while or longer.

My wonderful, lovely bunny friend is unbelievable

I found out today, on my fucking *birthday* of all days, that a dear friend has cancer. He and his wife have been friends since we lived & worked together in San Diego. We haven't physically been in the same room together for about 14 years, but thanks to this wonderful Internet thang (and the occasional 4-hour-long late night phone calls), we are just as close as always. It's too soon to really know anything about it, how bad it is, what the treatment will be, what the prognosis is. But the most amazing thing is -- and I wonder if I could have this much grace in the face of this -- my friend, his wife, says to me:

"...don't worry! As my 'Dahn master' and friend Sun says, 'You worry, you spend energy, you get nothing' Her English has gotten very good since she moved here from South Korea a little more than a year ago. Upon hearing our latest news, she added, 'You remember what worry is?' Mmmmmmm, I remember that IF I worry, I spend energy and get nothing, but no, I don't remember exactly what worry IS.

'Unconscious negative wish,' Sun said, enunciating each syllable deliberately. 'That's what worry is: Unconscious Negative Wish.'"

So, okay, I won't worry. But can I still cry?

Hate Crimes

The purpose of this tribe is "it's okay to be whoever you are," and so you might be interested in something happening a few miles away from us right now.

Okay, long story... bear with me a bit for the background.... I am not a Christian, I'm a pagan, and years ago I actually found a church that welcomes pagans, and it was nice to have a regular meeting place that was neutral and big enough to hold a large crowd, with a big kitchen and all of that. Churches are great as gathering places. Okay, these Unitarian Universalist churches ( http://www.uua.org/ ) are very big on affirming the "inherent worth and dignity of every person." That's the first of their seven "principles & purposes." They welcome pagans because they welcome everyone. It is because of this that I continue to take my kids to a UU church, so that they will have this social construct as a model. So I get an email today that a UU church in our area (not the one we attend) has had to file a police report about a hate crime. In the US one form of speech that is not "free" is hate speech. As an affirmation of this church's commitment to diversity, the church has twice displayed a rainbow flag with its street sign, and twice the flag has been stolen. The disappearance of the flag is an ambiguous event. Was it taken by someone who wanted to own and display a rainbow flag for her- or himself? Was it merely a prank? Or was it a statement by someone who disagrees with our values? There is no way to know. The first time the flag was stolen, it was anybody's guess why. This most recent time, though, it was returned by those took it, both burned and mutilated. There is no ambiguity in that.

Of course, they'll never figure out who has done this, but the church is going very public to try to raise some awareness. Unfortunately, they're located in one of the more conservative pockets of this area. They are working to erect a new, vandal-resistant symbol, and they will hold a public ceremony to dedicate it (probably with plenty of press in tow).

Until then, they've been holding public candlelight vigils each night to stand against hate. And that's where I am getting ready to go right now. It is very creepy that people who would do this are lurking around the area. I'm so glad no one has gotten hurt (yet) but I wonder if that is next. Just when I thought society was starting to come to its senses, this happens. It makes me very angry. The human race has a lot of evolving left to do.

Well, the Peace-Lovers won, big time, and now it's made the NY Times. This just proves that sometimes even Bunnies have to be Bitches to get things done!

Pro-Peace Symbol Forces Win Battle in Colorado Town
DENVER, Nov. 28 — Peace is fighting back in Pagosa Springs.

Last week, a couple were threatened with fines of $25 a day by their homeowners’ association unless they removed a four-foot wreath shaped like a peace symbol from the front of their house.

The fines have been dropped, and the three-member board of the association has resigned, according to an e-mail message sent to residents on Monday.

Two board members have disconnected their telephones, apparently to escape the waves of callers asking what the board could have been thinking, residents said. The third board member, with a working phone, did not return a call for comment.

In its original letter to the couple, Lisa Jensen and Bill Trimarco, the association said some neighbors had found the peace symbol politically “divisive.”

A board member later told a newspaper that he thought the familiar circle with angled lines was also, perhaps, a sign of the devil.

The peace symbol came to prominence in the late 1950s as the logo for the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, a British antiwar group, according to the group’s Web site. It incorporates the semaphore flag images for the letters in the group’s name, a “D” atop an “N.”

Other people have said the upright line with arms angled down, commonplace in the United States in the Vietnam War, especially, has roots in the early Christian era, representing a twisted or broken cross.

Mr. Trimarco said he put up the wreath as a general symbol of peace on earth, not as a commentary on the Iraq war or another political statement.

In any case, there are now more peace symbols in Pagosa Springs, a town of 1,700 people 200 miles southwest of Denver, than probably ever in its history.

On Tuesday morning, 20 people marched through the center carrying peace signs and then stomped a giant peace sign in the snow perhaps 300 feet across on a soccer field, where it could be easily seen.

“There’s quite a few now in our subdivision in a show of support,” Mr. Trimarco said.

A former president of the Loma Linda community, where Mr. Trimarco lives, said Tuesday that he had stepped in to help form an interim homeowners’ association.

The former president, Farrell C. Trask, described himself in a telephone interview as a military veteran who would fight for anyone’s right to free speech, peace symbols included.

Town Manager Mark Garcia said Pagosa Springs was building its own peace wreath, too. Mr. Garcia said it would be finished by late Tuesday and installed on a bell tower in the center of town.

Why is everybody in a hurry?

I was finishing up at Trader Joe's today, returning the shopping cart to the store after loading my bags into the car, when I saw a man inadvertently blocking the entrance to the cart "corral" trying somewhat inexpertly to handle his two small boys, one of which was being lifted into his shopping cart. While all of this is going on, a short queue formed of people waiting to return carts. Eventually, the father managed things and moved out of the way. Very audibly, a woman in front of me tells her friend, "Can you believe that? That man and his kids held everything up for, like, *an hour* while the rest of us waited!!" Oh, PLEASE!!! I wanted to tell the bitch to give the guy a break! What in the world is rotting while she spends one minute (max) waiting for the poor guy to get himself together? It's not like he was blatantly taking advantage of people. He was in a jam, and that happens sometimes.

This reminded me of a little exercise Awen & I were having fun with a couple of days ago, adding phrases to the infamous "Wear Sunscreen" video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=58J2dppampg Together, we managed this one:

Here's what I say:

I agree that Barak Obama would be great on the '08 ticket. I also agree that we need to see something Real happen in these midterm elections. I don't like my choices much either. I'll be voting, once again, for the "lesser of two evils." Dave just sent me an email showing "how to use" the new voting machines our county will now be using. It was sadly hilarious to watch. I kept waiting for a punch line, but in fact it didn't really need one. Folks "of a certain age" in our county will freak out and you can bet that if they can't use a PC at the library where I work, they certainly won't be able to remember all of the steps necessary to successfully cast a ballot on "these here newfangled contraptions." Gods help us.

And one more thing... I've come to believe that if, once again, after all these painful years of really obvious fucking-up, one-half of the American population still believes we are "safer" with the status quo, then maybe this country really deserves what it gets until the other half decides that revolution is in order. What will remain unfair is not that the rest of us are saddled with a gov't we don't want, but that the rest of the WORLD is.

Police arrested Malcolm Davidson, a 27 year old white male,
resident of White Plains, NY, in a pumpkin patch at 11:38pm
Friday. Davidson will be charged with lewd and lascivious
behavior, public indecency,and public intoxication at the
County courthouse on Monday. The suspect allegedly stated
that as he was passing a pumpkin patch, he decided to stop.
"You know, a pumpkin is soft and squishy inside, and there
was no one around here for miles. At least I thought there
wasn't" he stated in a phone interview from the County
courthouse jail.

Davidson went on to state that he pulled over to the side of
the road, picked out a pumpkin that he felt was appropriate
to his purposes, cut a hole in it, and proceeded to satisfy
his alleged "need".

"I guess I was just really into it, you know?" he commented
with evident embarrassment.

In the process, Davidson apparently failed to notice the
White Plains police car approaching and was unaware of his
audience until officer Brenda Taylor approached him. "It was
an unusual situation, that's for sure" said officer Taylor.
"I walked up to (Davidson) and he's...just working away at
this pumpkin."

Taylor went on to describe what happened when she approached
Davidson. "I just went up and said, 'Excuse me sir, but do
you realize that you are screwing a pumpkin?' He got real
surprised, as you'd expect, and then looked me straight in
the face and said, 'A pumpkin!? Damn...is it midnight
already?'"
