Special BURNcast Announcement!

The latest BURNcast podcast is available on-line (or download through iTunes). You can check it out here: http://tinyurl.com/4obfj3

But wait! There's more!

It's official: http://BURNcast.tv has been quietly launching these past few months while I've been taking a break from the audio podcasts. BURNcast is becoming a vidcast!

Why?

Well...because by the next Burning Man, all the audio recordings I made on the playa from last year will be used in upcoming episodes of BURNcast. Combine that with the fact that I am unable to visit Black Rock City this year and you have a very sad bomb!

So what I hope to accomplish in http://BURNcast.tv is to be able to see the magic and beauty of Burning Man 2008 through the eyes of the participants who will be attending.

Below is some FAQ's about http://BURNcast.tv:

Q: What is BURNcast.TV

A: BURNcast.TV is a vlog of videos produced by burners for burners. All videos will feature the art, culture and community of Burning Man. Sometimes videos won't take place on the playa or at the Burning Man event per se, but rather at other Burning Man events like Decom.

Q: How will BURNcast.TV work?

A: Simply submit the embed code from a video you've uploaded to any video sharing website like YouTube, DailyMotion, Blip, MySpace, and more to burncast_[at]_gmail.com. BURNcast will act as curator for the "BURNCAST Video of the Day Contest". Be sure to send your snail mail address along with the embed code because your video is selected, you will win an official BURNcast bumper sticker and we're gonna have to mail it to you!

Just a quick note to let y'all know that I've discontinued posting episode updates on this tribe because I think it's somewhat redundant. I mean, I post announcements on my blog and on the BM tribe whenever I've got a new episode up.

I was hoping that listeners would use this tribe for discussions on things they heard on the show or to spark ideas for topics that needed to be covered.

At any rate, that's about it. If you've got ideas, opinions, rants or raves I'd love to learn more about them here. But other than that, operators are standing by!

How do I conduct better interviews?

Going into my third season, i really want to hone in on my interviewing skills. For the most part, I try to be quiet when people talk cause I hate it when the host talks over the guest. But...this leads to folks rambling on or repeating themselves and this gives me a lot of work to do in post.

I'm getting to the point where I have a few stock questions:

- tell me about your project
- how long have you been going to BM?
- what brings you back?
- any advice for virgins? jaded veterans?

most of the time i do a great deal of research about the guest before i even meet with them.

but there are numerous times like when i'm just doing girl on the street interviews (hello decom!) where i am unable to research.

i'd like to be a better interviewer on my feet when i don't know jack about the person i'm talking to or the project they're involved with.

any advice?

or more importantly: what do you want general things would you like to hear from a guest ?

BURNcast Blog Moves to Blogger

We're movin' the BURNcast blog to Blogger. It was formally on MySpace.

New blog: http://burncast.blogspot.com
Old blog: http://blog.myspace.com/burncast

So, the obvious question: why?

Well, we're expanding and need more tools as other BURNcast contributors need to gain access to our back end to post content.

MySpace has served us really well these past two seasons with the ability to embed links, photos and add podcast enclosures. Even though Tribe.net is the social network of choice for burners, the service was limited and so a blog here just wouldn't be feasible. We're finding alas, that MySpace is as well.

But we're still continuing to have a presence and maintain our profile here on MySpace. MySpace is an excellent way to hear the BURNcast podcasts directly from our profile instead of having to subscribe through iTunes.

So expand your social network with us here or on MySpace but be sure to join us on Blogger!
There are almost as many ways to learn about Burning Man as there are participants. The combination of media attention and the desire of others to let their friends in on the wonders of Black Rock City. So we want to know: How'd you find out about Burning Man? Did the way you found out about Burning Man color your opinion of the event or the way you experienced it? Is there a 'right' way or a 'wrong' way to find out about Burning Man? Guest Host: Lance Hunter http://lancehunter.net/flip/
Corporations at the heart of Burning Man? The Project's decision to invite the display of green technologies in this year's "Green Pavilion" has sparked a controversy that has called into question some of the 10 principles that BRC's citizens hold most dear. Will Burning Man have to destroy itself to save the planet?" Guests hosts: Katherine the Great

In what may prove a public demonstration of the blind leading the blind, first-time Burner Steve Boyett of the Podrunner and Groovelectric podcasts interviews other first-timers about the differences between their expectations of Burning Man and the reality of the event. Emotionally and materially, what are you bringing and what do you hope to leave with? Guest Host: Steve Boyett http://www.djsteveboy.com

Friday 8/31 (1:00 pm - 3:00 pm) "Burning L-o-v-e!"
http://nospectators.com/index.php?page=burncast

In this episode we talk about health and safety on the playa with Dr. Groovy. In the first segment, we discuss the same things that are covered in the recent JRS "Health & Safety" issue. But in the second half of the show, we discuss things the JRS won't: like sex and drugs on the playa!

Dr. Groovy is a medical doctor as well as a Faculty Physician and a Medical Director at a major university in California. She is also a DJ at the internet radio station http://www.KillRadio.org. Her show "Phrequency and Phrenology" can be heard every Saturday from 4:30 PM to 6:00 p.m PST. Recorded June 23, 2007

Hey gang!

BURNcast will be on the playa, but do not know for sure WHERE yet.

Originally I've been posting that we'll be at Camp Sunscreen, but it's possible the camp is disbanding.

Soooooo...when I have the exact location, I'm going to post it here and on the BURNcast blog <see http://blog.myspace.com/burncast>

Since I leave this weekend for the playa, this information will be ready next week after I figure it all out while I'm there.

Since I have been unable to announce this in my latest (and last episode) I'm asking everybody in this tribe for memetic support and to spread the word on all your Burning Man tribes, listings and blogs.

BURNcast also has a recording schedule on the playa and I invite you all to participate!

Here it is:
Shameless Plug

Hey gang...this is a shameless plug to raise funds for BURNcast and push my Burning Man fashions. BURNcast is a money losing proposition for me, so I was trying to offset my costs by selling furry accessories and wool dreads. But...sales have been in a slump this year. Since I leave this Saturday for the playa, I'd love to see if I can make one last effort to get prepared for the playa.

So...if you know anybody who needs Burning Man fashions, please cut and paste the information below and help BURNcast out:

Hey fashionistas!

I leave for Burning Man this Saturday, August 18th. This is the last day for payment to process for anything sold on http://www.GlamourBomb.com

All dread falls are discounted to $100.00, but please contact me for a price adjustment via Etsy before purchasing.

All proceeds go to support http://www.BURNcast.net on the playa this year!

Please note: I only accept balance transfer and electronic funds transfers from PayPal. Absolutely no credit cards. I know this is a hassle, and I do apologize in advance.

Love & Rockets,
DaBomb

Hey BURNcast listeners, tune in tomorrow Saturday June 23, 2007 4:30-6pm
(Pacific time) for a rousing Phrequency&Phrenology on KillRadio.org
<http://killradio.org/> .

I'll be a guest with my good friend Dr. Groovy (a real MD and long time
burner) to talk about health and safety on the playa for Burning Man this
year.

Health? Safety? It's sounds so boring right?

Well, why don't you call in and remind us it's "Safety Third"?

Or you can call in and ask us if leaving whippet containers out in the sun all day is safe? Or if dosing is really a crime or a gift? Call us with your deepest safety concerns. Dr. Groovy will give you low down!

Due to another appointment later that evening, I'm aiming to be on the first half of the show so that would be the best time to call I
think. This live broadcast will later be used for podcast on BURNcast in the next coming weeks.

Below is information from Dr. Groovy (and yes, I am the queen!):

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Yours truly, Dr. Groovy will be joined by TWO extra special guests:

Robert Rawlinson, artist and entrepreneur, giving you a shout out
about BRAINWASHED. <http://www.brainwashedfashion.com/>
And you could even win some shwag...

and

BURNcast host <http://www.burncast.net/> and Burning Man Queen
(as in she rules), DaBomb and I will have a discussion on how to
be safe while you're at Burning Man. (The man burns in 75 days!!)

Feel free to call in with questions at 213-252-0998
or AOL IM to "killradiostation"

This will be my last show before I leave for Africa- so give me some
love and a good send off. I'll be back with you in August!!

Love and kisses,
Dr. Groovy

What is Burning Man?

What is Burning Man? Is it art? Fire? Fun? Work? Play? BURNcast has asked our guests in almost every episode, and no two answers are the same. Now we’re asking you!

This is a call for paRTicipation in an on-going community effort to engage burners in writing, sharing, and discussing the core values, personal beliefs and experiences as to the meaning of Burning Man and wonderful community of Black Rock City.

Author Brian Doherty wrote the book "http://www.thisisburningman.com" and used 104,614 words to do it. Now we’re asking you to tell us what Burning Man means to you by sending in essay of 500 words or less.

Every essay we receive is read and reviewed for potential podcast on BURNcast. This is an on-going project with no dead-line. If your essay is selected, you will be contacted by BURNcast to be invited to read your piece for an upcoming episode.

To submit your essay, visit BURNcast on-line and click on the "This Is Burning Man" box: http://www.burncast.net

I'd love to hear interviews about (or at) regional events?

There are quite a number coming up:
• Dark Skies, Freedom Fest II, Flipside, SouthBayBurners, Element 11, Synchronicity, Alchemy, Nutopia, Nowhere, Playa Del Fuego, Apogaea, Scorched Nuts, Critical Massive, Transformus, SOAK

And ones past:
• eleMent, Rebirth, Interfuse, Toast

and I'm sure I probably missed a few!

Either by your hostiness, or by representatives willing to get interviews, with regional contacts and/or participants and/or event co-ordinators types?

Tomorrow I've got 40 episodes in the can.

I really need feedback now about me. My guests rock, but what about me?

Do I have "hostiness"?

What is the essence of my "hostiness-ness"?

What are ways I can be "hostier"?

What aspects of my "hostiness" work?

What aspects don't?

I'll explain why I posted this thread in an upcoming episode, but for now I really want to know what is this "hostiness" and who's got it.

Thanks!

Brian Doherty mentions his episode(s) in his latest blog. Check it out: http://reason.com/blog/show/118977.html

Interestingly, comments were made in the blog about the Shooter for Worker's Rights at Burning Man campaign. On the BM tribe, Andi made a big stink about my mention of it in the podcast. Said "[ it ] doesn't reflect the entire community."

Hello? 36 episodes (notwithstanding the ones that are two parters), and over 18 hours of podcasts and he doesn't think it reflects the entire community? Methinks he's failed to listen to other episodes or thinks I'm a fully staffed news bureau or something.

(BTW, Brian's doing a book signing/reading for "Radicals For Capitalism", his newest tome, tonight at Book Soup in WeHo. Anybody wanna carpool from the valley?).

Anybody wanna weigh in on anything mentioned here?
In today’s episode we take to the stars at Burning Man 2006 as we cover two celestially inspired art installations: the Starry Bamboo Mandala and the Wishing Star.
In today’s episode of BURNcast we speak to a few burners from the streets of Reno at the end of the event they prepare for their return to their default life and reflect back on their experiences.
BURNcast recordings

I got a question about BURNcast I wanted to share with the list:

> What kind of recording equipment are you using for making your podcasts??

Well...I am using Hi-MD or Hi Mini Disc. This format has been officially discontinued by Sony as of late last year. On the one hand, equipment and media for this format are cheap right now. Bummer is, it is no longer supported. I like the quality of sound with MD, but it's not without issues. For one, Sony made this format proprietary and as such it will go the way of Sony's other proprietary format: Beta. Doh!

However, of the choices I had at the time I made my purchase, I opted for Sony's MD over the M-Audio 24-96 because I feel it's not there yet, especially with regards to the built-in rechargeable battery within the M-Audio. I researched it on discussion groups and decided I needed a recorder in which I can swap out regular batteries on the fly because you know how crazy things can get at Burning Man and I just didn't need it to *DIE* on me in the middle of an important interview. Plus the capability of recharging at BM is not always an option.

I'm totally interested in the Edirol or the Marantz compact flash field recorders, but they're rather expensive and the media for them is costly too. Maybe when my MD finally bites the dust, I'll be able to upgrade to one of these nifty machines.

Until then, MD has a lot of support on discussion boards such as this one --->
http://www.minidisc.org/

A resource for purchasing MD can be found here (but there are many many other places too) --->
http://www.minidisc.org/

The most important thing with regards to field recording IMHO is a good mike.

If you want to learn more about the nuts and bolts of podcasting, I recommend checking out Podcast411 (http://podcast411.com/). A fellow podcaster turned me on to this upon my return from BM2K6. If I had only known this before, some of the issues and frustrations I've had on the journey of podcasting would have been better understood. Highly recommend this site.

Hope this answers your quesetions.

BURNcast #017 - Adrian & Mysterious D of Piss Clear (Part 1)
http://nospectators.com/index.php?page=burncast
Length: 21:52
Size: 10.8 mb

Our guests in this episode are Adrian Roberts and his partner Mysterious D, two very old-school Burning Man veterans that publish Black Rock City’s favorite alternative newspaper “Piss Clear”. In the first of a two-part series of interviews, BURNcast gets the DL with Adrian and Mysterious D about their publication, “Piss Clear”, their highly successful night-club Bootie (featuring mash-up bootlegs) and Burning Man.

In addition to their journalistic endeavors, Adrian and Mysterious D are also mashup dj’s -- working under their bootlegger moniker "A + D". The two are freakin’ unstoppable and have had have their underground creations reach wide appeal. We’ll conclude this episode with two bootie mashups of off of a CD they gifted at Burning Man 2006. First up is Kanye West vs. Beethoven in the disco mashup, "Beethoven's Fifth Gold Digger". Next, DJ’s Loo & Placido rock it with “Black Beatles” featuring the Beatles vs. Black-Eyed Peas vs. Ludacris vs. Kelis.

For more information about A + D's monthly mashup club “Bootie” visit their website: http://www.bootieusa.com.

Recorded September 2, 2006 at the Piss Clear HQ in Black Rock City.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Interview with Avatierre of the Juniper Forest, who brings poetry and
visions of beauty about lullabies, butterflies, hummingbirds, fairy tales,
waterfalls, rainbows, and shooting stars. He speaks of things that matter:
kisses, kindness, compassion, truth, integrity, decency, honor, respect and
patience.

This episode is a blend of Avatierre's interview with BURNcast combined with
a CD he had gifted out at Burning Man 2006. He states his whole naked soul
lays bare on this CD and that he had only recorded it a few weeks before

This episode of BURNcast is intended as a soundscape for friends who were unable to attend this year’s Burning Man. It’s like a postcard -- or rather a podcard -- featuring the sounds of the playa on Friday night before the burn. It’s simply a bike ride from 7:00 and Esplanade to 3:00 and Esplanade across the playa.

You will hear Megavolt’s electric presence, the Neverwas Haul’s whistle, blasts from Burninator II and El Diablo thundering in the night. You also will hear the squeak of bicycles and overhear conversations as things begin to literally heat up on the playa that night.

A very special thanks to Lecter of “NoSpectators.com” (http://www.nospectators.com) for hosting these podcasts.

”Greening the Burn” is a movement within the Burning Man community dedicated to making the event environmentally sustainable. In today’s episode we go to Lightning In A Bottle, a weekend magical adventure produced by the Do Lab that took place in Santa Barbara, California, the weekend of July 14 – July 16th 2006. It is here that we interview Kachina Katrina and Blue, the two people involved with greening Lightning In A Bottle and who are also spearheading the Greening Of The Burn movement on the playa.

Special thanks to Lecter of NoSpectators.com (http://www.nospectators.com) for hosting these podcasts, to Diva Danielle (http://www.djdivadanielle.com) for doing such a great job of editing a very poor recording, and to the Do Lab (http://www.thedolab.com) for sponsoring this episode of BURNcast.

The first regional we did was for Xara. Now, we'll be doing Lightning In A Bottle.

How this came about was that the folks at LIB contacted me and invited me to come and record a podcast about their event with emphasis on how they're making the event eco-friendly. This is the first time we've been invited to anything and that's pretty cool. I received some feedback recently that BURNcast should cover more regional events, so here we are at LIB. BURNcast is about the art, culture and community of Burning Man and LIB is so green and so cool, it just has to be covered.

We attempted to record a podcast at Singularity last June. I actually was unable to go, but I had a guest host in place. As it turned out, the organizers of Singularity didn't want a podcast and were a bit rude about it and giving my guest host a bunch a flak (well...that's according to him...I didn't hear it first hand). This is unfortunate, but I respect their wishes because, I mean, people often give me a hard time when I say I don't want my picture taken. I don't think a podcast is any different except that perhaps it's audio.

BURNcast FAQs

We get a lot of questions at BURNcast that have little to do with the show itself, but more with listeners ability to hear the show on their computers. To be honest, we're not technical support types. Speaking for myself, I'm a massage therapist in my default life and I'm experiencing a learning curve utilizing all the information required to produce a podcast and get it on the internet. My co-host, Chai Guy is off hiking the Pacific Crest Trail and won't be back until October. So it's just me heading the show. Please have some patience as we go along.

Below are some FAQ's we get. We've posted it on BURNcast.net and now here as well:

Q: Do I need an iPod to listen to these podcasts?

No. But you need a computer, a sound card and speakers. Further-more, you need to plug in your speakers into your computer and turn them on. While you’re at it, check to see if your computer is on, too. Finally, check to make sure your “mute” button is off. Before writing to us and complaining that you are unable to hear the podcasts, make sure you’ve checked your equipment.

Q: How can I listen to BURNcast? What software to I need?

These podcasts were made in .m4a format, so we recommend the best software to play them is in iTunes from Apple. iTunes is free to download and use, and is available for Windows and Mac. Go click on this and get yourself some iTunes here.

Another solution is to listen to BURNcast directly from your web browser if you have a properly configured web browser with a .m4a capable plug-in. One such plug-in is supplied with QuickTime.

Q: I have iTunes, but I’m having issues subscribing. What do I do?

If you are having trouble subscribing to BURNcast in iTunes, then go to the Advanced menu in iTunes, and select “Subscribe to Podcast”. Paste the following URL into the dialog and then click ok. The following URL should also work with any RSS reader that supports enclosures and the .m4a format: http://nospectators.com/burncasts/burncast.xml

You can also try streaming BURNcast in iTunes. In iTunes, go to the Advanced menu, and choose “Open Stream”. Copy and paste one of the following URLs into the resulting dialog:

http://nospectators.com/burncasts/Burncast_001.m4a
http://nospectators.com/burncasts/Burncast_002-1.m4a
http://nospectators.com/burncasts/Burncast_002-2.m4a
http://nospectators.com/burncasts/Burncast_003.m4a
http://nospectators.com/burncasts/Burncast_004.m4a

Simply select the episode URL you wish to hear.

Please note that streaming will not provide the embedded photos, links or chapter titles, but the audio portion should play normally.

Q: I don’t have iTunes and I don’t want to install it. How can I hear the podcasts anyway?

What? This is art, man! That’s like viewing a director’s cut of a 70 mm print on a television screen. You lose the audio richness and the extra features that .m4a format provides. BURNcast is made in .m4a (podcast) format. More than a simple .mp3 file, BURNcast includes embedded photos, links and chapters.

OK...if you really insist on listening to BURNcast in .mp3 format: try right-clicking on the “Listen” link and choosing "Save target as" or "Save linked file as" or "Save link as" and save the file to your computer. After the download has finished, open the file in your .mp3 player and play the file. If your web browser adds an extension other than .mp3 (for example, .txt) then rename the file with a .mp3 extension and it should work.

Q: I only want to listen to BURNcast in .mp3 format. Do you offer that?

The simple answer is: Yes. (See answer to question above). BURNcast supports .mp3 format.

NoSpectators, which kindly hosts the files for BURNcast, now offers these podcasts in .mp3 format to enable those who are unable to listen to them otherwise. So, now you can get BURNcast in both .m4a and .mp3 depending on your capability.

To listen in .mp3, simply click on the "listen" on the featured episode you wish to hear as hosted on NoSpectators. You will automatically be downloading and listening to the podcast in .mp3 format.

However, for optimum sound quality and improved features, we recommend listening to the podcasts in the .m4a format in which they were originally created. It's relatively easy to do so: simply use the iTunes player which is available for free and works on both Mac and PC. To download, click here.

Q: Podcasts are automatically downloading to me. How do I unsubscribe for this?

If you are using iTunes, select the BURNcast subscription (its the one with the little grey triangle), right-click (or hold down the Control key as you click the mouse if you have a single button mouse), and choose “Clear” from the menu.

If you are using a different program, check its documentation for the appropriate steps.

Today's word of the day is Lecter (drink!) because it's Lecter's (drink!) birthday!

Yay!

I think I've known Lecter (drink!) about 6 or 7 years now. He's a great friend to have -- funny, goofy, loyal and sweet. Also, I and the fans of BURNcast appreciate you hosting our podcasts, too.

Yay for Lecter! (drink!)

Happy Birthday Lecter! (drink!)

BTW...any Lecter (d-frink!) fans here in LA...we're going out for pie tonight to celebrate at 4 and 20 Pies in Sherman Oaks on Van Nuys Boulevard near Burbank sometime after he gets off work! Come celebrate Lecter's (d-frrink!) birthday and have some pie and ice cream too!

BURNcast #009 - DJ's Diva Danielle & Poncho Andy

Length: 31:55
Size: 15.5 mb

------------------------------------------------------

Summer is heating up and BM is fast approaching. That means fundraising is well underway for many theme camps and art projects. Today's guests Diva Danielle and Poncho Andy dj’d at a benefit entitled "The Incredible 2nd Annual Costume Exchange" in which those in attendance had an opportunity to trade playalicious playwear and costumes from years' past. This event went into supporting the Ouija Says Ouija Board ( http://www.ouijasays.com )and the Cloud 9 Art Car (which was featured in last week’s episode).

Our first guest, DJ Diva Danielle is raising funds for Gnome Camp ( http://www.gnomecamp.com ), her theme camp at Burning Man. She’s done a special mix that follows her interview in this podcast.

Our second guest, DJ Poncho Andy, has headed up Burning Do-gooders ( http://www.burningdogooders.com ), which likened to the LA regional chapter of Burners Without Borders. Poncho has also created a special mix for this podcast as well.

Thanks to all our listeners for feedback about our show and for making it the success that it is. NoSpectators hosts the files for BURNcasts of which we are so very, very grateful.

BURNcast is made in .m4a (podcast) format. More than a simple .mp3 file, BURNcast includes embedded photos, links and chapters.

We're very pleased to announce that NoSpectators now offers these podcasts in .mp3 format to enable those who are unable to listen to them otherwise. So, now you can get BURNcast in both .m4a and .mp3 depending on your capability.

To listen in .mp3, simply click on the "listen" on the featured BURNcast episode you wish to hear.

However, for optimum sound quality and improved features, we recommend listening to the podcasts in the .m4a format in which they were created. It's relatively easy to do so: simply use the iTunes player which is available for free and works on both Mac and PC. To download, go to: http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/

Folks who already have iTunes can listen to the podcasts in it's original .m4a format by subscribing to BURNcast through the iTunes directory.

A special thanks to NoSpectators.com for hosting these podcasts.
