to start planning!
Anyone thinking about this year's trip, what with gas prices and all?
My sweetie and I will be driving from Pennsylvania to the Playa in a minivan, pulling an 5 x 8 trailer. We're thinking of driving straight out, driving in shifts until we get to Nevada. Stop for the night in Winnamuca, get supplies, then off to the Playa.
And you?

No BM for me, but anyone feel free to ask for tips since I driven from NYC 1999-2007 except 2005 8 times, round trip.

How long are you guys budgeting for your drive out and back? I'm seriously tossing around the idea of driving because cost of flying and renting a car is pretty equitible to just driving. And you get to take more stuff. :)
I'm still in the "hmmmmm" stages for thinking about this, so I'm looking for all kinds of input -

hehehe... ok ok... what day are you leaving PA with anticapated arrival at BRC? I'm in Harrisburg, so if I drive, it would be a similar trip to yours.

Heh heh....I think right now, the plan is to leave Saturday (a week before the event) and drive like hell for 2 days, each of us alternatiing driving. When we get to Winnimucca on Monday, we'll stop at a motel for the night and get supplies and then go in to BRC on Tuesday. Our depature day and the amount of time we drive depends on what day we get for early entry.
Thanks Abject for the gas formula!

the way to figure out what the cost are is simple take your vehicle's Miles Per Gallon, divide the miles over the the number of times you will travel before fill ups and give the gasoline cost at $3.50
In other words, my 1998 Dodge Mini-van gives me 21 MPG and about 400 miles before next fill up at 17 gallon tank. 2800 miles one way from NYC to reno and Gerlach is calculated 2800 miles divided 400 miles = 7 fill-ups. Therefore 3.50 x 17 gallons = $59.5 x 7 fillups = $416.5 one way, $833 round trip.

I have been working away at this years road trip. After much searching I finally found just the right Toyota RV & bought it two weeks ago. The Toyotas are small, but in my opinion a great option for Burn accommodation's. They are priced reasonably and can be found for $3500 for an older 4 cylinder.. The top of the line ones can go as high as $10,000. They stopped making them in 1992 because Toyota stopped making the one ton dually truck they are based on.
They get between 14 & 18 mpg. That's really good for a RV! Last year we drove a Dodge van & pulled a travel trailer. We got about 8 mpg. They also fall into the size limit to be allowed at Transformus. They fit into a regular parking place so you can pretty much just pull in anywhere & crash out on the road.
If anyone is interested in info on them let me know. I know more about Toy Houses then any non retired person should ]; )
