Burner Related Stores along the way?

Can anyone recommend specific areas to go shopping for Burning Man related stuff
along the way? I spent some time in Salt Lake City just before entering BRC last year
and found a strip that had some good camping supply stores, a liquor store, and a good number of
motorcycle supply stores which sold some nice playa goggles, but I don't remember what road this was.

Do any of the other cities and towns on I-80 leading up to Fernley and Nevada Rt. 447 have any
notable shopping?

Ride available, or I need a ride from Atlanta!

Hi guys! Seems that the road trip is not working out as planned. So many people, so many commitments, but alas the van has emptied :( I am completely flexible, able to leave anytime from now til then, and able to come back anytime until Sept. 1. So, if you need a ride from Atlanta, let me know, or if you have a ride to offer, also let me know! If I can't find passengers I think I might have to call off my grand plans... So let me know!

South Carolina to BRC, Have space for 1 or 2

Hey, Mr. Kitten here...

Anyone else crazy enough to think about trying for a drive out to the desert? With flights being what they are, if I could get just one more person (2 would be even better) to split gas costs with, and share driving, I'd just as soon hit the road.

I want to get out there by Monday, the first day. Want to be out there for the whole week, to see the city grow. I'll stay till the burn, but will need to leave soon after- IE, Sunday morning, MAYBE Monday morning at the VERY latest. Want to avoid massive unhappy exodus traffic, too.

I'm talking hardcore driving- its 2500 miles out there from my place in South Carolina. Googlemaps says its about 40 hours. I want to do it in 2 days, both ways. Sleep in the car, eat at truck stops, that sort of thing. Figure a few hours in Winnemucca or Reno to get the rest of the supplies (perishables) for the week there.

I have a truck that will make it, and a small trailer to haul stuff in. I _may_ have a station wagon, but it is undergoing repairs right now and obviously I want to make sure whatever vehicle we take is 100%. Either way, gas costs will be about $1200, or $600 each if I get one crazy ass fool to take me up on this offer. $400 each if I find two crazy ass fools. (Miss Kitten will be flying out later in the week, btw).

Interested parties should be able to afford that kind of dough, plus whatever expenses we incur along the way for food. Must have a driver's license, and probably be able to drive stick. No axe murderers. I'm flexible on music; you should be too. I'll be leaving the Friday afternoon before out of the Greenville, SC area and can pick up along the way (ie Asheville, etc) or you can meet me at my place. And, of course, you must be agreeable to all the rest of the above.

Ride From Toronto to BRC

Hey all, I have room for 1 and their stuff to and from Burning Man. I will be taking I-80 across the states, so I am able to pick up someone along the way if need be. I am leaving Toronto on Wednesday the 20th and should be at BRC around Friday. I am not sure on my departure date from BRC, decision to be made at the Burn.

Ride available from Atlanta

Hey everyone.

I have one seat left for a ride out to BRC and back from Atlanta. There will be 5 of us (you included) driving out there and we will be picking up two others in Reno on Saturday. Last minute shopping happens on Sunday and we'll hopefully be arriving on the playa early Sunday morning. Let me know if you are interested. Even share of gas... ~$200 will hopefully be camping/couch surfing on the way out to keep costs down.

looking for driving partner

Hi everyone;

I'm driving from near Toronto, crossing at Sarnia/Port Huron and then headed toward I80 near Chicago for the trek cross country. Usually my husband is with me and we share the driving BUT he can't get away this year AND I decided I couldn't not go because writing for the Black Rock Beacon each summer renews my soul for the whole year.

So I have my ticket and the camper is ready to go but I'd appreciate another driver and someone to share the fuel expense. Anyone want to share the experience? I don't have a particular aversion to any type of music 'ceptin' I'm not real fussy on gospel or too much twang. Sometimes I've been accused of being quiet but that's 'cause I write stories in my head first before it gets on paper.

There's room for one person and a reasonable amount of gear. The camper is very fuel efficient - about 22 mpg - and for a camper that's great. Oh and it's a four speed manual shift! Would prefer a licensed, insured experienced driver since I'm travelling as a foreigner (Canadian) and need to keep good company so's I can come back for a visit another time!

My plan is to leave home on Thursday morning for arrival on Sunday (I have my name on list for early entry because we're putting a paper together for printing on Monday). And I'll be leaving BRC on Monday and have most of that week to return so could do a bit of a leisurely thing or a straight shot depending on the other person's schedule.

Any takers along the route?

Vegan Bus to Burning Man has extra space..

The Vegan Bus ( www.theveganbus.com ) is going to Burning Man again this year, and will have some extra space, probably enough for 4 extra people than we have now. We leave from Northampton, MA. Accommodations will include the ride plus vegan food and the option of camping with us. With fuel prices going up and airline tickets going up too, our vegetable oil powered bus is the way to go!

My sweetie and I will be driving from Pennsylvania to the Playa in a minivan, pulling an 5 x 8 trailer. We're thinking of driving straight out, driving in shifts until we get to Nevada. Stop for the night in Winnamuca, get supplies, then off to the Playa.

Taking a road trip home for the holidays this year? Be sure to go easy on the gas pedal, particularly if your travels take you up or down the East Coast.

According to stats from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the I-95 corridor between the southeast and New England includes five of the 10 U.S. states carrying the highest fines for speeding--Virginia, Georgia, North Carolina, Maryland and New Hampshire. All hit up speeders for a maximum of $500 or more for a first offense. Judges in Carolina and Georgia, not to mention 16 other states, have the discretion to add jail time.

Tough for travelers? Sure. But nothing compared with what can happen to residents. Virginia, this year's lone newcomer to the list, instituted a $1,050 surcharge to state residents on top of its traditional $300 speeding fine in July. The law is designed to raise money for infrastructure projects throughout the state without raising taxes. Thankfully, the penalty only applies to locals.

Spearheading the new law was Virginia state legislator David Albo, whose law firm, Albo & Oblon, specializes in defending drivers against traffic violations. Critics have railed at Albo for what they see as an obvious conflict of interest, though he scoffs at the idea he's made any money from the legislation.

"Who's going to pay $1,500 to go to court with a lawyer for the non-guarantee of getting out of a $1,000 [or so] speeding fee?" he says. He points to stats from Virginia's Joint Legislative Audit Review Commission showing an 11% decrease in reckless driving arrests since the new law passed, while speeding tickets have dropped off slightly.

The national median for a first offender's top-end fine is $200, according to the NHTSA. And even states with lower standard fines sometimes have exceptions. Connecticut, for example, generally caps fines for first-time speeders at $50, though exceeding 70 miles per hour on a "multiple lane, limited access highway" will usually bring double or triple that amount. In Massachusetts, anyone caught going more than 10 miles per hour above the limit is socked for $10 for every additional mile, over and above the state's $50 minimum.

And be on the lookout in financially strapped rural areas and beach towns thick with tourists. Both are notorious for raising revenue by sticking lots of people with speeding tickets.

Getting stopped by a police officer for speeding doesn't necessarily mean you'll get written up. Those with the skill and know-how to talk or act their way out of a ticket have saved themselves a lot of money over the years. Rule No. 1, of course, is being polite to the officer. No need to antagonize someone who's in a position to set you back hundreds of dollars.

"The guy has a gun, badge, Billy club and a ticket book, so be nice to him," advises Alex Carrol, author of the book Beat the Cops, which offers tips on getting out of tickets. Others include little things like removing sunglasses, turning off the stereo and pulling over far enough so that the officer isn't practically standing in the passing traffic while he quizzes you at the driver's side window. A little consideration can go a long way.

Also, Carrol points out, don't ever volunteer information. Wait for the officer to tell you why he pulled you over. Launching into an immediate apology for speeding can bring an extra charge if the officer had initially stopped you for a faulty tail light.

How hard a speeding ticket hits you in the wallet can vary according to several factors, including how fast over the limit you were going, no matter where in the country you're caught. Is it your first offense, or are you a multiple offender? Half the states in the U.S. use a "points" system to measure drivers' moving violation history. Piling them up increases both fines and insurance rates. Also, were you caught zipping too fast through a school zone or construction area? If so, expect to pay as much as double the normal fine in some states, thanks in part to targeted efforts by the Governors Highway Safety Association.

"We're recommending enforcement in certain areas, like school zones and work zones. The idea is to go after the worst offenders first," says Jonathan Atkins, an Association spokesman.

Not surprisingly, young males are nabbed for speeding more than anyone else, NHTSA figures show, with 38% of men under 21 caught in the act last year. In fact, it's not until you reach the men's 35 to 44 age group that the number of speeding incidents comes in below that for 15- to 20-year-old women.

When it comes to trying to get out of a ticket, some people really know how to get creative. Carrol relays a story of a woman who carries a camera in her car, purely as a prop to show cops as she tells them she's rushing to the hospital to meet her pregnant sister, for whom she promised to take pictures during delivery. Then there's the guy who always drives around with a full water bottle. Anytime he's pulled over, he pours a little out onto his lap, and then tells the approaching officer he's been trying to rush home ahead of a bladder emergency.

"He always gets out of tickets," Carrol says.

We thought we saw you on the road to BM.. I recalled you saying that you just got a new trailer & this guy went by in a blur pulling a new trailer with a Va tag. So I said to Christina HEY I think that's Darrell..

So we floored the gas & tried to get caught up. Its kinda hard to chase someone down in a old van pulling a 28 foot Mobile home .. LOL But we did!!!!!! It took about 10 Min's of steady rolling till we got up to ya.

Melissa, Mark, Christina & I are all leaning over to the right side of the car ready to wave & shout out the window...

And well it wasn't YOU,,, ]; )

But it made for a funny story :)

We're heading out Tuesday, Aug 21st around 11am, and going through Charlottesville to pick up a rider. We'll take 64 through to Illinois, then go through Nebraska, Wyoming, Utah, and do some shopping in SLC before hitting the Playa on Saturday Morning. I'td be good to meet up with other burners for meals.
