how well do dorm sized refrigerators work on playa?
i really cant imagine how they'd fare any worse than garage use - i know my parent's garage could easily get up to 110+° during the summer.... however, they did not have the dust to contend with... and i must wonder if there's enough of that to cause the coils to not work correctly

Re: if ya have the power....
Fri, June 27, 2008 - 11:37 AMyou can fit more in a decent cooler and the line to get ice everyday you'll meet lots of like minded wonderful burners.
it's a communal thing... besides if you pick up ice for a few camp mates today.. they can pick some up for you tomorrow.
i cant imagine running a genny all day to keep the sun from making it a metal box of canned heat.
if you do have unlimited resources for a fridge n GENNY.. bring a deep freezer... we can sell tix for the Timothy Leary freeze ride.

Re: if ya have the power....
Fri, June 27, 2008 - 4:57 PMgoing to artica to buy ice every other day is sort of fun - its a social outing and a destination. Coleman makes extra-insulated coolers that keep things cold for 5 to 9 days, so you don't have to have a fridge.
having one more generator running, just for a mini-fridge, just seems wasteful. (just my opinion.)
but i'm sure it would survive the week. it might not keep running afterwards though. (not sure how the corrosive dust would interact with the probably-no-so-sealed motor.) -

Re: if ya have the power....
Fri, June 27, 2008 - 6:01 PMi was not asking about going to get ice... nor did i say i would forgo that experience.... i fully plan on having a cooler or two
i also did not say i'd be running a genny for the sole purpose of an ice box ..... which i wont be. i merely asked how fridges survive the playa - that's all.
thanks for assuming and not answering the question -

I believe i did answer your question in a round about burning man fashion..
the heat from the sun and the dust collecting upon the condensor coils would cause your 'mini fridge' to work its little ass off making your mini fridge "a metal box of canned heat."
Though if you ask the "purists" they'd say you were a pussy for 'roughing it' with a mini fridge.
... but thats the purists.!
btw.. this is all tongue in cheek... lol.. nothing meant to offend. Peace, love N druids.

Re: if ya have the power....
Sun, June 29, 2008 - 11:45 AMThe dust won't be a factor, if your coils actually get dusty enough to lose efficiency, all you gotta do is brush them or squirt 'em with compressed air.
The thing that will fuck with your fridge is the drive. The refrigerant ciruit also has oil in it. If the oil gets into the wrong places it will cause damage. Being laid on it's side and/or jostled about during 8 hours of driving will likely spread the oil through the plumbing. The good news is that upon several hours of just sitting still in its proper upright position will allow the oil to drain back to where it belongs.
Were I taking a refrigerated device to the playa, I'd let it sit overnight before plugging it in. Probably more time than nessesary, but I think how sad it would be to go to the effort of a fridge on the playa just to use it as a shoe cabinet in the tent cause it died.
