Anyone have any nice and simple plans for creating a structure that would involve a silver reflective tarp being propped up over a tent to keep it oh so nice and cool??
Thanks, chris

Re: to cover a tent with a reflective tarp?
Tue, August 21, 2007 - 3:08 PMplease be aware there have been *severe* dust storms for the past two weeks and you are going to want to make sure that what you create is properly supported to keep it upright.

last year i made a simple structure with 1" PVC pipes. the pipes come 10' long, so two of them makes an arc about 7' high in the middle (so you can stand up). my structure uses 4 pipes, plus one half-long pipe between them to make an "H" shape. The ends of the pipes are slipped over 2' long 1/2" rebar pounded into the ground. the "H" is connected with slip-on pipe fittings that are then ducttaped in place. attach your tarp/shadecloth with zipties or cord. You'll need one guyline (rope) on each side.
to take it down you take off the tarp, pull the pipes off the rebar, and cut the ductape.
(you can make it fancier with other attachments, but this is basic, and its field tested) -

Re: to cover a tent with a reflective tarp?
Wed, August 22, 2007 - 8:45 AMWhat are the dimensions of your tent?
I thought about doing just this, but I have a very large tent... 10x18 and it is about 6' tall in the middle. I don't know if 10' PVC poles would sufficiently clear the entire width of my tent to make this feasible (maybe at the lower ends of the tent, tho).

Re: to cover a tent with a reflective tarp?
Fri, August 24, 2007 - 10:00 AMI did a monkey hut last year, separate from my tent, but my camp has a big dome and storing those 10' sections when you live in SF is not easy.
But the monkey hut didn't seem like it would sufficiently clear the height of my tent. I am not sure if setting the poles closer in would make a diff or not.

Re: to cover a tent with a reflective tarp?
Sat, August 25, 2007 - 8:56 AMnot that it's helpful now, bot you could conceivable make the hut bigger by cutting the poles longer by a few feet, or adding sections. surfing around the monkey hut threads you can find some good ideas for making them bigger. but like i said, probably not this year. -

Re: to cover a tent with a reflective tarp?
Mon, October 15, 2007 - 3:17 PMI've been covering my tent with a reflective tarp for years.... and I found the following points (good and bad) to be true:
1- The tent doesn't breathe... so even though you are reflecting the sun, it's still an oven inside.
2- If there's a big dust storm... your tent will be "less dusty".... but it's all relative.
3- At night your tent will be warmer with the two layers.
So after 8 years of the same design, I changed my reflective tarp to cover ONLY my screened in area in the front of my tent where I kept my food and a chair.
I found this made my sleeping area more comfortable during the day and with an extra layer of fleece, I was comfortable at night.
