OK every year I start buying stuff on my birthday, May 1, for burning man. It is a great present to myself and it also makes it so don't have to buy everything all at once. But, I am drawing a blank. I need help. What should I start ordering now.
I have:
flashlights
mini flashlights
shower
bandana
face mask
misters
tent
cooler...
Please give a few tips and refresh my memory.

Re: What to bring
Fri, May 1, 2009 - 8:36 PMMy list, compiled from several sites, is four freakin' pages long. :(
playabound.wordpress.com/2009/...-long/
I have all my usual camping/burn stuff pretty much set, and packed (and some continually in my trunk), but the playa is throwing me for a loop or two. Well, really just one.
The problem I've having revolves around the same issue: weather.
How much, really, do I need to pack for cold nights? How much preparation, really, do I need to make for wind? Etc. -
-
Re: What to bring
Sat, May 2, 2009 - 4:35 PMThis is an awesome list! Of course there is so much it is over whelming, but that is why I get started early lol. Thanks so much, this is very very helpful. I had forgotten about things like Head Light and Chap stick.
I need like some nice little organization boxes to pack all this little stuff in. I have to remember to take natural antibiotics like Oregeno oil and Olive Leaf in case I get sick. So much to bring!

Re: What to bring
Sun, June 7, 2009 - 9:26 AMThis will be my first trip Rob to BM
Give me some hints I'll be driving from the ORLANDO AREA
-
-
Re: What to bring
Tue, June 9, 2009 - 9:45 AMIf you're driving you have lots of room to bring stuff.
If I was driving I would bring an inflatable mattress, a full size good cooler... and of course make sure you bring a bike and lock.
BUT the most important thing I would do is LINE YOUR CAR with several plastic drop cloths... and duct tape them in place BEFORE you pack to leave. That includes your trunk. When you get to the playa cover your dash and front seats with the drop cloths.
Playa dust is like talcum powder and it's hard to clean.

Thu, June 11, 2009 - 8:19 PMI'm a noob. Should my water bottle be plastic or metal? -
-
PLASTIC OR METAL
Fri, June 12, 2009 - 8:28 AMThat is a really good question and I hope someone can answer this because I DON'T KNOW! lol. This will be my sixth year and I have never thought about it. I use hard plastic, although it is not healthy because the heat put toxins from the bottle into your water, but it's only for a week. Metal tends to get REALLY F-ing hot out there and burn fingers and tongues. I am guessing Plastic.

Re: What to bring
Sun, May 3, 2009 - 10:25 PMParachute NOT so good (unless holes are cut into it to let it spill instead of catch air). They tend to catch air and at best make the world spin faster and at worst absolutely flatten the rest of your camp.
I've seen steel domes covered in cargo chutes look like god had rabbit punched them in one side after storms in '00 and '02. I've seen parachute shade structures pull the 3/4 rebar spikes on their upwind and beat the cars and tents on the downwind side to death with that rebar in a playa windstorm.
I've seen attack ships burning off the shoulder of Orion : ).

Mon, May 4, 2009 - 11:13 AMhey sas-
thanks for bringing up parachute issues!
i just got a 64' diameter cargo chute that has only one hole at the top.
now i will have time to create slots/ holes for wind to escape, so as not to become airborne!
thanks again for insight!

p.s. like the bladerunner reference too. -

Re: What to bring
Mon, May 4, 2009 - 12:51 PMI'd still avoid parachutes where possible. They let too much heat through and trap it. -

Tue, June 9, 2009 - 4:26 PMDid you exit the plane at 10k feet? If so.... what was it like? Has anyone did it? -

important to bring
Wed, June 10, 2009 - 2:52 PMThese are, I think, some of the most important things to bring:
Extra glasses:
Sunglasses and regular. Losing or breaking a pair could be a real pain. I bring a back up set.
Flash light / headlamp / blinkies.
In the deep playa you could get hit by a bike or art car if they don't see you. You can't believe how DARK it is out there.
Gloves:
Your hands will take a beating out there on the hot dry playa.
Hat:
You will burn.

James Taylor must have been on the Playa:

I've seen sunny days that I thought would never end...."

Re: What to bring
Tue, May 5, 2009 - 5:41 PMThe drinking implement leash IS vital, or at least a hook on your belt for it so it's always with you.

Re: What to bring
Wed, May 6, 2009 - 12:29 PMWhat is a leash? I've seen in mentioned, that it was an inside joke lol... I guess it isn't, so what is it? -
-
Re: What to bring
Wed, May 6, 2009 - 12:47 PMleash is what you use to tie things, like drining cup or titanium spork to your self...you would be surprised how easy it is to leave things behind.....like when a dust storm hits and you cannot see them less than a foot from your face......... -
-
Re: What to bring
Thu, May 7, 2009 - 3:42 PMWhere do you get a leash? lol It makes you think of walking the dog. -

Re: What to bring
Thu, May 7, 2009 - 11:37 PMBelinda: Buy leashes at any REI, Adventure 16, or sporting good store.
Make your own from any short, thin nylon rope (like from Home Despot).
Tie one end of the rope to a carabiner, or a spring clip of any kind.
Melt or fuse the nylon knot with a cigarette lighter.
This makes sure the knot can't come undone and the rope can't come off the clip.
Tie the other end to a heavy-duty mug with a cap (for hot or cold drinks).
Melt or fuse that end also, permanently affixing the mug to the clip.
Clip the rope to belt loops or large keyrings pre-threaded through any hole in clothing.
Clip a spork. pocket knife, tiny flashlight onto the rope.
Tuck those items into your pocket as an anchor.
NOW YOU'RE PLAYA READY (to walk the walk, or walk yourself) !! -
-
This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.
Re: What to bring
Thu, May 7, 2009 - 11:43 PMBelinda - not vouching for the following company, but this was the fastest website I could find that illustrated clips and lanyards and leashes and etc. Don't hang sporks and mugs around your neck; bangs the sternum and obscures the view....heh.

Re: What to bring
Fri, May 15, 2009 - 9:54 PMThis is some Damn Good Advice! This is going to be the best burning man yet! I am definitely evolving! -
-
Re: What to bring
Tue, June 2, 2009 - 10:45 AMYou can also take 6 to 8" of nylon webbing and place a gromet (those brass holes you see on better tarps) in each end of it. Then you can add a carabiner, and you can as needed either loop the webbing around something and clip the carabiner to a ring on your utility belt OR wrap the nylon webbing strap around your belt and hang and Item from your carabiner.
And if your a Bloody Mary aficionado, make sure you come by for the Bloody Mary Brunch on Wednesday at the Lamplighter's bar! -

Tue, June 2, 2009 - 1:50 PMif you have a trailer, camper, or rv....
be sure to add a new coat of SnowCoat to seal out rain, and help keep your shelter cooler by reflecting the sun's rays/heat.
