The Joys of Customs (Canada and US)

topic posted Thu, September 6, 2007 - 9:18 AM by  Hannibal
Hey all... just a small tip... if you're taking anything of value or PERCEIVED value across the border, make sure you have a certificate of origin or receipt for it when you come back... we came back with some art that was displayed on the playa, and customs was trying to assess it for taxes... they wanted us to pay gst on the PERCEIVED value.... I learned quite a bit, but in the end they just gave up and let us through, but that was only because I was totally honest with them.... its scary folks!

So when crossing into the states, do you get instantly searched if you say you're headed to burning man, or should we be going to a retreat in Utah?

          ok

try to explain when they search your car.

found - costumes, BM related stuff, your ticket, gifty things, a bunch of condoms, a musical instrament and sex toys ect.... you will have a fun convo after that.

i tell them i'm camping in Black rock city in nevada. they ask more i tell more.

they are not stupid people at the border - and can cause you HUGE Grief -- there is almost no one more powerful than a customs agent - and boy they can mess up your day and more. esp if you give them cause.

i have been grilled several times.

once - for taking jobs as a BM Ranger
bringing commercial items - they were gifts
once because - well i don't know why because

Hannible, is correct, bring arty things do the paper work - or you might be surprised as he was.

          Never lie.

I've never not told them I was going to Burning Man... they don't care that much... in fact, this last year we drove a 5 ton truck to Burning Man, and rather than search it, they were going to xray it. I had already told the previous guard that we were going to Burning Man, so I volunteered the information that we had an art car in the back of the truck, as I knew that would raise some questions... the middle aged female guard looked at me and asked why we had a car in the truck, and when I said we were going to Burning Man, she rolled her eyes shook her head, and waved us through with only a cursory search... she had seen enough Burners to know that we were all relatively harmless crazies... Pretty much every time we've crossed either way, we get the same response in some fashion... From working with customs for a few years, I do know that what the customs agents are looking for are people who are lying... they can read it a mile away, and they know all about Burning Man. I posted the customs information with the idea that if you know the rule and follow the rules, customs will wave you through... Be Prepared!
