Help me out here. I've been to one BM several years back, and now I want to go again. The question is how to join in with the right camp with the right group of people. My particular lifestyle might narrow down the choices.
I am a free agent, financially independent ("indy"?) I am a vegetarian who does yoga. I like it quiet sometimes. I play guitar and sing. I take no drugs. I drink a little socially. I have been to some Rainbow Gatherings in USA and world. I live remotely in the woods with a homebuilt PV solar system. I instruct Thai Yoga Massage. Heterosexual. Veteran. Reasonably good health.
Please advise as to what group(s) I might fit in with --- and to contact for a good campsite fit at BM.

Re: looking for a certain kind of camp
Sat, June 6, 2009 - 6:13 AMYou might want to check the list of theme camps on the Burningman website when it comes out and find camps that look like they might be a good match for you. The listings include descriptions of the camp and their activities. Then you can contact them and inquire about joining.
For example, here was the list from 2008 : www.burningman.com/themecam...ll_a.html -

Re: looking for a certain kind of camp
Sun, June 7, 2009 - 9:45 AMThanks Bobz... the reply. Looked at the list and had a serious laugh at some of the descriptions.
Found one yoga camp and one vegan camp for '08 --- and these do not appear for list '09.
Maybe you know somebody who has heard something from a person he knows or knows somebody else who may have heard a rumor or saw something about some folks who usually get together at BM and practice stuff like yoga and healthy food ? And then you could kind of pass the rumor along to me or else tell somebody whom you might know to sort of let me in on something they might know about it? Because not every kind of camp is officially written up I think, for people to choose from?
Thankz -

Re: looking for a certain kind of camp
Sun, June 7, 2009 - 10:00 AM09's list is not out in it's entirety yet.
there will be additions - keep your eyes on the list there.
keep an eye on happenings on tribe and/or e-playa - sometimes people ask for campmates here/there.
find posts or threads in this tribe, the main bm tribe, or any of the related bm tribes, that sound akin to what you're looking for and directly inquire the person that stated what you like
attend events local to you and chat people up
there are 10001 ways to find camps
first one i was in was because i went with a friend that was already in the camp
second camp, still in it, i joined when i offered to do some conceptual art for a project. from there i was swept into the camp - who knows what's next -

Re: looking for a certain kind of camp
Sun, June 7, 2009 - 10:13 AMamendment... as bob stated, looks like 09 list is not out at all yet.
theme camp application deadline just past with the end of may, so i am sure the org is busy processing all the apps. give them a little while, but if you saw camps on last year's list, and there is contact info - give them a try... they might be coming back, or know of something similar if they're not
oh, hey... if you've not looked yet... a GREAT resource is www.burningman.com/first_timers/
we're entering the busy season... -

Re: looking for a certain kind of camp
Sun, June 7, 2009 - 10:01 AMTo my knowledge the 2009 Theme Camp list is not yet up to my knowledge. But there are always several camps along the lines of what you're looking for. I'll keep my ears open and will post back here. I'm part of the BORG so I hear about most things.
One thing to consider it that there are registered theme camps, then there are just groups of people camping together. Those groups aren't listed anywhere, they are just friends of like mind who camp together so you really need to know the people to find out about the camp.
Remember, one of the principles of BM is radical self reliance, so do some research, use your network. Are you on any raw foods or yoga email lists? Post and ask if anyone goes to Burningman. Sign up for Eplaya, eplaya.burningman.com/ post there as well. The people you seek are out there for sure. You just need to find them. -

Re: looking for a certain kind of camp
Mon, June 8, 2009 - 10:11 AMYeah, What Bobzilla said PLUS, check out the camps in/from your area. Regional email lists are a great resource for this and you can find contacts for those on the Burning Man website under the "regionals" link.
Honestly, your list of traits would be kind of hard to match in that while most camps contain some individuals with all of those traits, most are rather a mix off all types of people and if specialized at all are usually only so in narrow and specific ways like NA Camp, or Vegetarians Camp or Massage camp or Yoga camp.
In fact, a yoga camp with a good number of older members might fill most of your requirements. The HeeBeeGeeBee Healers camp comes to mind but you may still have neighbors who smoke or drink. Quiet may be impossible to get as an absolute ANYWHERE in Black Rock City but some places are relativley quite compared with others. The best "quiet" on playa is at the extreme outside edge of Walk-In Camping but even there you'll be closer to the train tracks at playa edge and right next to the BRC Airport runway.

Re: looking for a certain kind of camp
Tue, June 9, 2009 - 8:39 AMhey briggi-
watch tribe between now and burn. will be lots of posts about camps, others looking for camps.
last year was my first burn, and banded up with a dozen orphans, and others looking for a home.
we are all meeting up again this year!
most all are welcome, just be low-maintenance, with an open-mind.

Re: looking for a certain kind of camp
Tue, June 9, 2009 - 9:39 AMTo make things simpler, I would suggest that you focus on the one thing that's the most important...
For example, it might be best to find a camp that's vegan... everything else would be "gravy"... vegetarian of course. -

Re: looking for a certain kind of camp

Thu, June 11, 2009 - 8:27 PMIndeed. Many people go solo and camp by themselves. You just need to be COMPLETELY prepared -

Re: looking for a certain kind of camp
Thu, June 25, 2009 - 11:03 AMYes, who could say no to all that?
Definitely this homie will check it.
Having checked their page, I see it's run by ISKON (= international Krishnas), known for routinely utilizing heaps of white refined sugar on everything. Which may be OK by some newbies transitioning into the lifestyle, I'll admit, but a little different from my own practice.
A good solid yoga camp will have the clean healthy food thing going on automatically as part of it. So I'm focused on keyword Yoga.

Re: looking for a certain kind of camp
Thu, June 25, 2009 - 12:13 PMI was camping with them last year and they might be the camp for you. I can personally vouch for the quality of their food (amazing! didn't use any sugar from what I recall) the people were all very nice, and they had yoga every morning in the main tent area. Even so, I'm sure there are several other camps out there and just groups of friends camping together that might better suit your needs :)

Sat, July 11, 2009 - 12:43 PMCheck out www.heebeegeebeehealers.org
Very cool people from my experiences. I didn't see if the meal plan was vegie or not but I can't immagine that's not one of the options. I'm sure you can contact someone there for specifics.
Good luck! -

Re: looking for a certain kind of camp
Sat, July 11, 2009 - 10:34 PMThanks, you're getting warmer. Concept looks good.
This might be an entry level "guest healer" slot for me.
For sure this is on-list, due for a checkout.
Hoping some more things will open up in the coming weeks to get a broader picture of options.
