Anyone care to share the good and bad parts about flying versus driving in, specifically for someone from pretty far away, like South Florida?

Re: Flying versus driving?
Mon, April 14, 2008 - 7:20 PMDo you mean one of:
• Flying with a commercial airline to (say) Reno, and renting a car or getting friends to bring you the last 100 miles?
• flying a small light aircraft that lands at the playa airport.
• or maybe you have the superhero power to fly?

Mon, April 14, 2008 - 9:22 PMTime vs money...money vs time...
Which do you have more of??? :)
Flying is faster, driving lets you bring all kinds of stuff and see cool stuff on the way.

Re: Flying versus driving?
Mon, April 14, 2008 - 10:13 PMI am thinking commercial aircraft and having a friend pick us up/rent a car.
As far as money, I've calculated that to buy an old beater van + gas for there and back is close to $3000... where as 2 round trip plane tickets would be around $800.
I am sad that I'd be missing the scenery if we decide to fly... but cost is really the major issue at the moment. -

Re: Flying versus driving?
Tue, April 15, 2008 - 12:07 AMIf you don't already have a reliable vehicle, I would not recommend driving it cross country and then through the middle of the Nevada desert!
Cost wise from Florida, looks like 3200 miles x 2 = 6400 miles at 20 mpg = 320 gallons at $4/gal = $1280? To me it would depend if I had 4+ extra days before and after to make the road trip.
And I would not try it in an old van, I am way too old for that. I would either take a "nice car" (like my Z-28) or rent a car for the round trip. But flying is definitely faster, and probably cheaper. Also (in the past) there have been some shuttle services setup from Reno. And you can even charter flights from Reno to the Black Rock City Space Port.

Re: Flying versus driving?
Sun, April 20, 2008 - 6:45 PMFly and rent or get a ride/flight. It's a LONG BORING drive from Texas and (depending on where you are in Florida) you are going to probably double it. -
