So I have heard the standards for gifting:
- Take poloriod shots of people and give them the picture
- Misters
- Glow braclets and neckalces
- Share a meal
- Buttons with your theme camp
But what I am looking for is something new, interesting, useful, fun, easy to tote around and have on hand to give...
What have you gifted that worked well?

Re: Gifting ideas..
Thu, April 3, 2008 - 8:28 AMGifts can be anything, sometimes it's just a helping hand when someone needs it. Or a hug or a smile. The best gifts were something i really needed at that point in time, like getting caught in a dust storm and forgetting my mask and someone handed me a disposable one. Or one night out deep and someone watched with envy as I applied chapstick on my lips so I handed them a brand new chapstick spare that I had. Once when I was feeling down someone gifted me their time and we walked the playa together for a few hours.
Gifts don't have to be something you can touch... -

Re: Gifting ideas..
Thu, April 3, 2008 - 8:57 AMI like this idea. Last year was my first year, and I had a tough time connecting with others because my expectations of the experience was too high. (I had been hearing of BM for 5 years before I actually went... so by the time I did go I went expecting a wonderful experience to fall in my lap and when it didn't happen I shut down)
I am from the land of passive-aggressiveness (Seattle) so opening up, walking into someone's camp, introducing myself to a stranger is a frightening thing..I hope to overcome it this year... step out of my comfort zone.. and have no expectations.

Re: Gifting ideas..
Thu, April 3, 2008 - 1:08 PMCustom lighters!!!!!
Useful and creative!
Go to Big Lots or similar outlet/overstock store the sell for <.20 each. Pressed flowers, slickers, paint, pictures clipped from magazines (porn!!!), affix to lighter. The items that don't stick use clear packing tape (also found dirt cheap at outlet store). $20 and a few hours later, bag of fire starting goodness.
BTW i've never been to burning man. This idea was stolen from street rats at gay pride selling them for $3 each. All they had was porn lighters and for that crowd it was well received. I bought one!!!
Hope that helps.
Really though, i like the sippy cups idea. -

Re: Gifting ideas..
Thu, April 3, 2008 - 3:25 PMalso, volunteering is a great way to gift and meet people and hear about their lives, needs, friends, journies.....
for me it IS ALWAYS, HAS ALWAYS been about the people.....
the schwagg, ya, i keep it....but the people are what make me cry,
the experiences are the thing i back for, the stickers, sippy cups, and blinkies......not so much. -
-
Re: Gifting ideas..
Thu, April 3, 2008 - 3:27 PMin 1996 i do not remember schwagg....i do remember drum circles, shared wine, being on collapsing two story tower....but no scwagg.
it was my favorite year of them all, not the best necessarily, but my favorite.... -

Re: Gifting ideas..
Thu, April 3, 2008 - 4:07 PMI hope I get to the point where I can compare years... this will be my 2nd. -

Re: Gifting ideas..
Thu, April 3, 2008 - 8:33 PMYou can practice stopping in and saying hi at the Pleasure Garden! We had a great bunch of friendly people last year.
I kept a few extra AA batteries in my bag, they came in handy for a few people. -

Re: Gifting ideas..
Fri, April 4, 2008 - 9:52 AMone year, i forgot my toothbrush, and was gifted two...that was pretty freaking cool.
one of my favorite years, was just standing in the street, with a squirt bottle, but now people bring water cannons....i guess cool water can still be nice....
Be warned: ask first, some people do not like cold water, no matter how hot the day.

Re: Gifting ideas..
Thu, April 10, 2008 - 10:22 AMI hand crafted several items for BM..
1. I tie dyed about 3 doz white cotton bandana's (dharmatrading.com).. made a BM 07 w/camp logo on iron ons. cost me about a $1 each, and came in handy when the sand monsters appeared.
2. I had some old photo keychains not being used.. I made a BM logo on one side.. my contact info and some calender events on the other side.. bought some leopard leather shoestrings and made lanyards.
3. lighters I bought a box of 50.. slapped a home made BM sticker on it... who hasn't needed a lighter in the middle of the desert?
4. flashy blinky things
5. bottle cap art pins..
none of these take up a lot of room or space... not too expensive and with a lil thought you can turn some inexpensive kitsch into a keep sake treasure. oh the home made BM jewelry is nice.. but beware of those made with lead.
you can find some great idea's and how to make them on www.instructables.com/home -

Re: Gifting ideas..
Thu, April 10, 2008 - 10:57 AMbottle cap art, mmm, last year i was gifted a bottle cap necklace with a man and a sunset behind him in the middle. sooo amazing, i loove it!

Re: Gifting ideas..
Tue, April 15, 2008 - 12:34 PMon the lighters... You could get away even cheaper and gather match books from bars and restaurants in your area and give match books instead... Still serves the practical.. 'lighting their fancy' but gives them a piece of your hometown.
For the "Beware of Mooop'.. whatever they are smoking they usually have some remnents that they have to take 'home' anyway.

Re: Gifting ideas..
Thu, April 10, 2008 - 5:32 PMIt's going to be REALLY dark out there this year. The new moon is the night of the burn! Imagine going into a porta potty at 3am Saturday night, and realizing you forgot your flashlight. Bad news.
So how about giving little photon style lights? Maybe like these www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.1253
You could personalize them by attaching something you made yourself. -

Re: Gifting ideas..
Fri, April 11, 2008 - 11:46 AM<<So how about giving little photon style lights?>>
fingers get tired of holding little buttons down (for long time), little flaslights might be better.
also, i have to say, that *little gifting ideas* are perpetuating the useage of resources, being green means trying not to be a 'consumer' for consumings sake. i know it is gifting, i would like to just encourage gifting with thought, instead of thoughtful gifting...
my two cents.

Re: Gifting ideas..
Fri, April 11, 2008 - 1:19 PMCute! I was also thinking keychain ashtrays... for those who don't want to carry the mint tins around in their pockets.

Re: Gifting ideas..
Thu, April 10, 2008 - 7:31 PMin addition to gifts of myself (standard) I've been going for the practical side of gifting. I'm making a jumpsuit with tons of pockets and rings so I can clip on lots of useful things like travel size sunscreen, hand sanitizer, lip balm, lotion, eye drops, wet wipes, baggies, markers, batteries. That way if someone needs something I can quickly unclip or unpocket it and gift it over. Basically, merging costume and gifting into a walking playa vending machine. :)
I figure I can also use that as an opportunity for a dialog on self-reliance or playa-prep for some. Sometimes we just forget things or have a bag lost/stolen, but other times people didn't bother to read the survival guide before showing up. So while I'm handing someone a bagging at the porto potty I can explain why we can't/don't put wet wipes or trash in the potties. Or I can just help out someone who's having a rough time. :)
I've also been trying to keep track of things that I no longer like or use, then filing them away to gift out. Arm warmers I'm tired of wearing, earrings that never looked good, things I've sewn that were testers, extra tent stakes, tins that can be used for ashtrays, etc.

Re: Gifting ideas..
Fri, April 11, 2008 - 1:22 PMThat is a really good idea. A way to recycle and make people happy at the same time. That is officially the "Greenest" answer. -

Re: Gifting ideas..
Sat, April 12, 2008 - 2:41 PMHow about feathers and confetti?
Maybe a lot of glitter too? -
-
Re: Gifting ideas..
Mon, April 14, 2008 - 12:10 PMBrilliant! I have already purchased 10 cans of silly string and A big feather pillow so I can begin a friendly burner pillow fight when I meet someone new.

Re: Gifting ideas..
Mon, April 14, 2008 - 2:42 PMWow!
Pets on the playa, I bet they would make great gifts!
People love puppies, kittens and rabbits.
I wonder how many chickens I can get to hatch in the hot sun. -

Re: Gifting ideas..
Mon, April 14, 2008 - 2:44 PMif you live in a place like sacramento, or las vegas and you put the eggs in car a month before burning man and let them pre-heat,....you will have a much better live chicken ratio. -
-
Re: Gifting ideas..
Mon, April 14, 2008 - 5:20 PM"you will have a much better live chicken ratio."
Great idea.
I guess if I leave them in my hot car for a couple of days after they hatch, I don't have to cook them before I serve them.
This tribe offers a wealth of great ideas.
I think I might open a sushi bar- then I don't have to cook at all for my friends. -
-
Re: Gifting ideas..
Tue, April 15, 2008 - 1:01 PMheh.
did you see other posting about what to do with the people who die on the playa......
YOU COULD EAT THEM (instead of sushi!!!!)....
then you would not have to cook or cook for them!!!

Tue, April 15, 2008 - 1:02 PMhey, if you missed it, someone else could have thought she was serious. in this case, better safe than sorry.

Re: Gifting ideas..
Tue, April 15, 2008 - 1:21 PMThat is why the dust storms get frustrating. Our camp did so well about not mooping all over the place... but after a few of those storms... there would be random moopie items that blew in from some other messy camp.
My camp mates that stayed after last year on moop patrol had a hell of a time cleaning up. I heard a dust storm raged for almost 2 days making moop patrol nearly impossible.

Tue, April 15, 2008 - 1:04 PMburning man is an LNT event (leave no trace)
((i think that these ideas are way more important than gifting...))
thank you for starting this thread!!!! -

Re: Gifting ideas..
Tue, April 15, 2008 - 1:08 PMI agree, this is a good thread. Since I have been with my boyfriend (raver turned burner since), he has made me so proud with his LNT skills he has developed and gives me heart a little twinge when I hear him getting on someone about leaving moop around. -

Re: Gifting ideas..
Tue, April 15, 2008 - 1:12 PMBut to get to the gifting, over the years I have gifted lighters, of course, lighter leashes, condoms, lip balm and tons of "ears" that I have made (pics are all over my profile), the ears have been quite popular indeed, they tend to give you a certain "power" ;-)
Oh, and I have gifted/shared tons and tons of "Fine Franzia Boxed Wine", ya know when only the "finest" will do, do Franzia! -
-
Re: Gifting ideas..
Tue, April 15, 2008 - 1:18 PMThey actually have some really nice boxed wine out there. I have been looking into it since bottles take up so much room. One box wine equals 4 bottles of wine. I'm thinking of bringing a few this year. -
-
Re: Gifting ideas..
Tue, April 15, 2008 - 1:37 PMAll joking aside, what is nice about the boxed wine is that you can take the "bladder" out and keep that in a cooler and not have it take up the room that it does in the box so then of course even less trash to worry.
My latest invention for our "regional" coming up is a "fine wine" I.V. rack I am making out of an old coat rack, putting wheels on it and hanging the bladders from the hooks and attaching surgical tubing to the spout, I am so excited to have this at the regional. Is going to be SO much Fun. -
