Next year will be my first time at burning man. Therefore I'm starting to prepare now. I know the weather can be extremly hot and cold. Does anyone one have any suggestions for shoes.

Re: Shoes for the Playa
Sun, October 4, 2009 - 9:16 PMMany people wear slaps ( =zoris, those Japanese shower shoes that cost $1) and they work great to keep your soles from the alkali. -

Re: Shoes for the Playa
Sun, October 4, 2009 - 11:59 PMMost people prefer to keep their feet completely OUT of contact with the playa as the playa is death on most people's skin. Any kind of shower shoe is right out.
Despite the leave no trace ethic, there are plenty of hazards to your feet on the playa so many people prefer combat boots in breathable suede. They protect the feet from stray rebar, discarded cans and broken glass nicely. Shined leather or plastic patent leather tends to be real hot and to not "breathe."
A daily regimen of cleaning and moisturizing is good for the feet too.

Re: Shoes for the Playa
Mon, October 5, 2009 - 11:17 AMThe important thing to remember is that no matter what anyone tells you "your mileage may vary" Everyone's body is different. I know many people who walk around barefoot much of the week and have no issues. I did that one year and had no issues. The next year I had major issues when I tried it again. The best thing it to be completely prepared. I wore bowling shoes this year as they were cheap ($10) ebay, stylish, (two tone suede, with a big number 13 on the back) and very comfortable. I found my combat boots too hot this year. I had a pair of sneakers that had a few small holes in them but with in 8 hours of touching the playa they completely fell apart. The playa can eat shoes.
Take it from me though, the week completely sucks if you have feet issues. Playa foot can be VERY painful.

Re: Shoes for the Playa
Mon, October 5, 2009 - 11:52 AMyou ask 10 people, and you're likely to get 15 replies....
no one answer will work for everyone.
i've done barefoot, tevas, birkenstoks, hiking boots, platform stompies.... etc. never had a problem with any of them - well, did get a blister from the unbroken in stompies
only recommendations, make sure your footware is well broken in, you do not want to get blisters out there while breaking in new footware ... also make sure to have good socks with extra socks, and finally, have options. -

Re: Shoes for the Playa
Mon, October 5, 2009 - 12:01 PMI bring 2 pairs of brand new socks per day at MINIMUM. -
-
Re: Shoes for the Playa
Mon, October 5, 2009 - 2:44 PMI live by the two pairs of socks a day rule too... it's one of those small things that gives a big payback.
My sister just bought for me socks with elastic arch supports and no seam at the toes....
I felt like my feet were kissed by angels!
I plan on switching to these types of socks immediately.
... as far as foot gear goes:
I find a pair of broken in sneakers works best.
One thing that gets me though is when that playa dust gets on the laces and I pull them tight, the sound drives me up the wall... like fingernails on a chalk board. -

Oh god yes, me too!

Gross "thing that drives me nuts"
Tue, October 6, 2009 - 1:20 PMToe concrete. When lots of dust filters into my shoes (sneakers, but especially my favorite footwear: Keen sandals) and sweat and/or spilled liquid comes into contact with it, I end up with these concrete-like deposits inside my shoes. They drive me insane as they show up before I realize I was creating pre-concretous mud slurry, are hard to get off, and very uncomfortable. -

Re: Shoes for the Playa
Mon, October 5, 2009 - 5:45 PMConsider different footwear for different activities. Here's mine:
-Steel-toed work boots for safe and comfortable camp set-up and tear-down.
-Teva sandals for lazy days. Extra sunscreen to protect from sunburn and as playa barrier lotion.
-Platform boots for costumes and dancing.
-Leather shoes with non-slip soles for fire spinning.
-Knee-high suede moccasins with soft soles for climbing sculptures and trekking the playa.
The moccasins were a new addition to my wardrobe last year and are the most freakin' coolest footwear, ever. The soft soles feel a bit like like you're walking barefoot, very sensual but protected from the elements. They've also worked well for climbing as my feet conform better to whatever it is I'm standing on, and sometimes the dust can makes surfaces slippery. Not great for street wear or anywhere you might stub your toe or step on something sharp, but wonderful for walking on the open playa.

Re: Shoes for the Playa
Tue, October 6, 2009 - 6:32 AMTennis shoes worked great for me. It's not THAT cold at night. During the day I might go with tevas. If you do go barefoot, you'll need to vinegar your feet at night.

Re: Shoes for the Playa
Tue, October 6, 2009 - 3:49 PMI swear by combat boots... at least until this year... arrived late at night in a dust storm, opened the rear door to my car not seeing anything in the duststorm & my 8# sledge hammer fell out hitting my toes... black & blue all week, every step was "ouch!"... so NEXT year, STEEL TOE combat boots for me! MUAH HA HA!
P.S. - Now looking at helmets and bullet-proof vests... and chainmaille... ya, that too! and stainless steel gloves... ya, that's the ticket! gonna be indestructable next year!

Re: Shoes for the Playa
Tue, October 6, 2009 - 4:16 PMFirst year I used Croc's with fresh socks daily... Second year I work Chaco sandals and even went barefoot around camp. Had no foot problems. Hubby wears Military desert boots and loves them - so just make sure your shoes are comfortable. OBTW - my niece wore suede birki's one year and they were trashed with playa dusts that never came off. -

Re: Shoes for the Playa
Thu, October 8, 2009 - 9:22 AMI was barefoot around camp, and then had a plain ol' pair of boots for leaving the immediate camp area.
Whatever is comfortable for you (and safe, if your activities include such things).

Re: Shoes for the Playa
Fri, October 9, 2009 - 8:12 PMI wear my flip flops most of the week. I hate the feeling that you get with all the playa dust in between your socks and your shoes. Its way more comfortable to wear flip flops or slip ons. Ive had to deal with a minor case of playa foot but nothing a vinegar soak wouldn't fix. -

Re: Shoes for the Playa
Sat, October 10, 2009 - 12:28 AM......back to where we started from.
Slap-flops are easy step-in/step-out, and practical, and provide enough minimal protection against the drying effect of the dust, with maximum comfort and toe-wiggling freedom.
Socks attract more dust than they keep out.
Tight pointy shiny leather hightop laceups are the last thing you'd wan't on the hot hot playa (try it and you'll think those boots are something a sadist or bondage expert designed [excuse the use of these terms]) unless you like sweaty feet trapped inside heavy thick leather boxes. (and I'm not being judgemental -- there are too many B&D - S&M afficionadoes out there who evidently want just that).
So I'm assuming you'll want something practical and comfortable.. On the other hand, the jury is out on what constitutes fashionable costume footwear and your imagination is the limit on that.

Re: Shoes for the Playa
Sat, October 31, 2009 - 5:41 AMEveryone will have a different preference.
I am part of the combat/hiking/work boot crowd. And lots of socks. I drive up in athletic shoes, and immediately put them away for two weeks, and use boots. Somewhere around Fernley I get the shoes and a clean pair of socks out, for the drive home!

Re: Shoes for the Playa
Wed, November 11, 2009 - 7:21 PMI'm with Steve. Well not literally. We've never met. That I recall. I arrive in cross trainers, then switch to Merrill Moab boots for the week. Nightly vinegar spray and wash, and Burt's Bees peppermint foot lotion. Fresh socks daily. My feet are in better condition by the last day of BM than in the default world.

Re: Shoes for the Playa
Sat, October 31, 2009 - 9:36 AMshoes with socks worked for me 08. in 09 i thought i'd do the zoris, which did not work well for me. i did not wash my feet as i should have either. all my fault.
shoes, almost any type with socks goood idea! and washing feet before slumber.
if your feet succumb to the harshness of the playa, once you get home, get the "ped egg!' that silly little infomercial gadget that's like a cheese grater. i does work! it will shave off all that thick dead ugly skin, and allow your feet to recover and look & feet human again.
platform boots, old tennies (if you ninees are too small, and your elevenees are too big), army boots, etc...
piko!
