Ok here is a random thought that just popped into my head that I would like people's thoughts on.
We are considering bringing a small patch of Sod to lay on under some shade. I have heard of it done before with people using cooler water on it. I was thinking it would not be fitting to lay the sod directly on the playa with the take what you bring, so I was thinking you would need to lay the Sod on some tarping. So then my brain twisted the thought into this:
Would making a box evaporation pond work with Sod laid over half? It would be some eco friendly water from a shower and some cooking.
This could be a totally stupid idea but my brain is too tired for a good evaluation so I put the question to you.

Re: Sod and Evaporation Pond
Fri, August 14, 2009 - 1:52 PMmaybe instead of sod, since you now know it's verboten....
dip old towels, or sheet in the evap pond, then drape over rack of some sort.
this will allow air to blow over the fabric and speed up evaporation process.
what do you think? -

Re: Sod and Evaporation Pond
Mon, August 17, 2009 - 7:50 AMI think that is a good idea.
I figured Sod was not allowed but wanted to ask as I have chatted with people who have taken it and I have seen pictures, so I did not know if it was self contained if that was the exception, thank you for the answer. -

Mon, August 17, 2009 - 12:23 PMLike pools, which are not allowed either, sod sometimes does make it onto the playa anyway. The gate probably missed it.

Re: Sod and Evaporation Pond
Mon, August 17, 2009 - 12:50 PMI saw a very fine like, conveyor belt of sewn together towels that dipped into the gray water and then went up into the air and back down one year. All driven by a little windmill. Seemed to work well. He remembered to make a shallow "well" in the evap pond for the place the lower towel roller was.
Looked like he made it with an old erector set.

Tue, August 18, 2009 - 4:11 AMSasquatch;
Larry Breed, also known as Ember, is the inventor of that Gray-B-Gon evapatron that you saw. He has provided step by step instructions online for anyone that wants to build this. Its quite simple actually.

He is making several versions this year - one for Earth Guardians to display and use; one for the Alternative Energy Zone where he camps and one for the Black Rock Beacon where he is the much revered grammarian and proofreader. -
