We have an 8 person Coleman Rock Springs tent. It is fabulous....except the entire ceiling is made of mesh (for ventilation). Of course there is a rain fly to go over it, and this will be great for airing out in the hot Black Rock middays...but we are worried about dust getting in through the vents.
Any tips on providing more dust security? We thought of duct taping the rain fly to the tent but figure that the hot hot sun would melt it to the tent material.
Here's the link on the tent:

Many Thanks,

Re: How to make a ventilated tent dust proof?
Wed, July 6, 2005 - 6:13 PMHi Silas,
Short of getting a tent from England via E-Bay (European tents don't seem to have the mesh ceilings) I had to settle for a Coleman Crescent Rim XL 8 man tent which has that ceiling so I've been thinking about the same thing and agree about the duct tape.
I will do one of two things.
1.) I will hand sew velcro all along the edges on the tent side and fabricate a cover to fit out of nylon that fits neatly over the mesh ceiling. The cover will have the other half of the velcro on it.
2.) Or I'll be fast and dirty and whip stitch the same cover to and through the mesh (It'll be fairly easy to remove after the burn which'll be nice as I usually don't camp in whiteout lundia : ).
As I am a compulsive virgo with something like asberger's syndrome I'll likely excercise option one.
Note: Rainfly's conspire with the wind to guide the dust to a calm place where deprived of momentum and lift it sifts down like base beige snow : ).

Re: How to make a ventilated tent dust proof?
Tue, July 19, 2005 - 9:46 PMForget what I said about having a Coleman Crescent Rim XL.
It looked really good but it has those clips that clip to the fibeglass rods from the tent. Two pulled right out of the tent seams the very first time I set it up.
The thread was made of lint or something and the tabs that the hooks were on were only held on by a single line of stitching. Not even a bar tack.
Feh!
I got a giant all canvas trek tent. Really huge. 50 lbs packed. Only netting is in the windows : ).

Re: How to make a ventilated tent dust proof?
Thu, July 7, 2005 - 9:38 AMI put a 16 ft. over my Eureka 10 man tent. Some dust still gets in of course but likely a lot lets. And my tent stays cool enough for daytime naps! -

Re: How to make a ventilated tent dust proof?
Thu, July 7, 2005 - 6:32 PMHow to keep the dust out of a ventilated tent.
1) Leave it in the cardboard box thing it came in.
2) Wrap said box in 12 layers of ductape.
3) Please ductaped box in several large trash bags.
4) Leave baged, ductaped, boxed tent in a Reno Hotel.
See, easy. -

Re: How to make a ventilated tent dust proof?
Fri, July 8, 2005 - 5:23 PMThere are plenty of tents available domestically that seal all the way up- check ebay. Tents get expensive when they get lightweight, which is not much of a problem on Playa. I have a 12x14' monstrosity that I snagged refurbished for $99. I'd leave any tent with much (well, any) uncovered mesh home. The dust will get in, but will not get out. And you'll be sad.

Re: How to make a ventilated tent dust proof?
Sat, July 9, 2005 - 3:16 PMCheap and easy answer:
Get some old bedsheets (sometimes hotels will give them to you for free if you ask). Cut them up so they cover any ventilated mesh plus 2 inches all the way around. Then use painter's tape to secure it on the tent.
Voila! The wind comes in, but the dust stays out and you don't have to keep your tent zipped up the entire time (which makes it hotter than hades in there)

Re: How to make a ventilated tent dust proof? if you decide to use sewing...
Wed, October 12, 2005 - 10:14 AMif you decide to concoct pieces to cover the mesh areas, BE SURE TO DO IT WHILE THE TENT IS SET UP!
i made some pieces my first year without everything being stretched out and the pieces did not fit and did not seal.
lots of work wasted (but was not that hard to fix the next year, just added a piece here and there to expand)
cheers! -

Re: How to make a ventilated tent dust proof? if you decide to use sewing...
Wed, October 12, 2005 - 6:10 PMI used a standard painter's canvas drop cloth and the ever present office supply item.... binder clips! After you pop up your tent, throw on the canvas and clip it to the tent poles, then put your rain fly over. This worked really well as I had minimal dust in the tent. I was also under a carport and had a wall to the wind side - that might have also helped. -
-
Re: How to make a ventilated tent dust proof?
Thu, August 23, 2007 - 1:26 PMi like this binder clip idea. my tent is practically all mesh, but the rainfly is almost solid - I am thinking put a tarp under the tent, then binder clip the bottom edges of the rainfly to the tarp to create a seal. Think it'll work? The rainfly just has little vents at the top, which I think I will sew additional velcro onto for a better seal. -

Re: How to make a ventilated tent dust proof?
Sun, August 26, 2007 - 9:05 AMOf course this is too late for most people. Buy rip stop fabric from Joann's and get some Gorilla Tape. Measure, cut, adhere.
-
Re: How to make a ventilated tent dust proof?
Tue, September 18, 2007 - 6:07 AMI used a tarp draped over my tent. I found that if the tarp hangs down low enough past the mesh areas, it cuts out most of the dust carried by the direct wind. Air finds its way up under the tarp to the mesh, but by that time it's mostly just air. I've accepted that there's no avoiding playa dust; the best you can do is minimize it.

Mon, August 27, 2007 - 2:32 PMLooked all over the place for a post like this two days ago. Bit too late for me now. I took a glue gun and some old sheets to mine. This is my first year so I'm hoping it will work. Will take some gorilla tape with me just in case. -

Re: How to make a ventilated tent dust proof?
Thu, September 27, 2007 - 9:02 PMI took Jennaluna's suggestion before I left for the playa. And Yes, it wasn't perfectly dust free. But I truly believe the Quilt batting FILTERED out most of the dust.. Until thursday afternoon, when the sheer force of the wind pushed the dust through the batting. Oh well.
It was pretty easy to do pre-playa. Cheap too. And it works!
Good call Jenn.

Re: How to make a ventilated tent dust proof?
Sun, September 30, 2007 - 9:49 PMLayers of material is how I did it. I was a newbie for 2007 first burn. I do not like camping very much nor staying in a small tent without creature comforts. So I purchased one of those 10 X 20 garage enclosures. Then I did what the Arabs did with their tents to keep out the sand - I layered material from the ceiling and walls. It kept the sand out, but it was cool and ventilated. I had Persian rugs, a king size air mattress and other creature comforts making my first burn wonderful!

Re: How to make a ventilated tent dust proof?
Mon, November 19, 2007 - 5:36 PMHere's another way to attach light fabric (like bedsheets or gauze) to the tent over the windows without tape -
www.shelter-systems.com/gripcl...ex.html
These things are effin amazing. They're great to have around just in case -
you'll find that you use them for stuff that you never even thought of.
Even costumes (with the small ones).
BUT - even though you dust-proof your tent as much as possible,
dust WILL get in your tent.
You will have a much better time if you resign yourself to becoming ONE WITH THE DUST.
The DUST is one of the rites of passage of Burning Man.

Re: How to make a ventilated tent dust proof?
Sun, May 4, 2008 - 5:32 PMI've noticed a lot of people have said "sewing velcro on." any reason people would be sewing it on, as opposed to using the one that is sticky so u just "tape" the velcro on? -
-
Re: How to make a ventilated tent dust proof?
Sun, May 4, 2008 - 9:52 PMheat plus playa dust plus forces from wind will likely equal sticky velcro not sticking any more -
-
Re: How to make a ventilated tent dust proof?
Mon, May 5, 2008 - 12:01 AMExactly. The heat makes it lose adhesion and the minute it's exposed the playa coats the adhesive and it's ALL over for the adhesive velcro.

Re: How to make a ventilated tent dust proof?
Mon, May 5, 2008 - 8:01 AMFive years at BRC leads me to conclude:
a) Because wind is predominantly from North and South, face doorways East.
b) 60/40 shade cloth seems to allow lots of air movement, but filters the dust greatly.
c) Aluminet also provides equivalent, acceptable results.
d) Get RID of dust by returning to the Playa and going to dust exchange camp .....

Re: How to make a ventilated tent dust proof?
Tue, May 6, 2008 - 4:38 PMI double tented, outside tent seemed to slow the dust so that the inside tent where I stashed all things not dustylicious were kept. Opening the outside tent allowed ventilation to reach both. -

Re: How to make a ventilated tent dust proof?
Wed, May 7, 2008 - 10:37 AMI sewed fabric almost all the way up to the top of my mesh sided tent, then left the rainfly on which covered most of the tent. It still looked like it had snowed in my tent after the two duststorms.
This year - Kodiak canvas tent offa ebay. My friend had one last year and the only dust she got was what was tracked in from coming in.

Re: How to make a ventilated tent dust proof?
Thu, May 8, 2008 - 8:08 AMI took batting material (actually, I used old xmas tree stand covers... the ones that look like 1/4 of "snow") and sealed all my mess vents. It acted liked a filter, and while dust still got in, not too much. I found the material to vent better, and be even more effective than an old sheet (which gets clogged with dust requiring one to shake it out...which sent dust everywhere) and it's rather cheap.
The reality is that dust is going to get everywhere...be ready for it. -
