hello burners, i am a 2007 burning man virgin with hair about halfway down my back. I am told this is going to be a challenge on the playa which makes sense.
those tiny little braids like from that old movie with Bo Derek "10" (now I'm really dating myself) have been recommended to me. However, I'm skeptical of anything but a professional job and may not be able to afford that.
If anyone has any tips on long hair on the playa and keeping it under control, i.e. info on those braids, or a hair product you can put into it to detangle and style which is preferably not made of synthetics and where you don't need to wash it first, it would be greatly appreciated.
Of course there's always the alternative of hacking it all off and going short, but somehow some of my magickal powers seem to come from my long hair.... strange, that. so i will leave the scissors tucked away!

Re: long hair on the playa....
Tue, August 7, 2007 - 3:41 PMoh and by the way I did see the other post about the braids... i guess I'm wondering whether there are other solutions and also as I'm working in a conservative environment right up until the day before going, tiny braids may not even be an option.... -

Re: long hair on the playa....
Tue, August 7, 2007 - 3:52 PMi just brush and do one large briad or leave down as i want to.
it is not that big a deal, especially if you find a way to wash it while on playa.....
i have never had small braids in the 7 years i have gone...i have been on playa up to nine days...you will be fine! -

Re: long hair on the playa....
Tue, August 7, 2007 - 4:21 PMOnce I braided it into 20 (or so) braids and didn't think about it untill we left (washed the braids a few times but did not undo them) I had a very rough time pulling them apart.
The next time I did fewer braids (about 8) did the same thing, but at the end of the week took a pair of scissors and cut the last inch (just above the rubber band. I figured I was going to trim the ends anyways...lo and behold hair brushed out with the greatest of ease...

Re: long hair on the playa....
Tue, August 7, 2007 - 5:08 PMI have been told to do buns and bandanas. i actually shorten my hair a little more than usual for the summer and plan on getting it cut as soon as I get back. When I have dont long camping trips or when I was canoeing in minnesota for a week I did pig tails and a hat.

Re: long hair on the playa....
Tue, August 7, 2007 - 5:25 PMCheck out the "Keeping hair Clean" thread for non-braid ideas on hair maintenance: burningwoman.tribe.net/thread...0dd1aac
If you're not gonna braid it all up, you'll at least have to detangle and you'll want some kind of product to gently lubricate your hair as you do so, or you'll end up breaking it. You'll probably want to wash it, though, as the natural oils of your scalp plus even natural oils of a detangler plus sweat (you do sweat out there, it just evaporates very very fast) plus dust = dirty head. Of course washing means more water used and more grey water to deal with...braids are way easier, albeit expensive. I'd think that in Vancouver you ought to be able to find someone reasonable, though everyone might be booked up by now.
If you do not mind brushing it out daily and then putting it back into a long braid or two, then you ought not have too much trouble with it, I'd think.

Re: long hair on the playa....
Tue, August 7, 2007 - 6:47 PMMy hair is to my knees when its wet, and past my ass when its dry.
I braided my hair in three braids, then braided those three braids together. I sewed a 'sleeve' of sorts from stretchy fabric, with elastic on one end (which I tied into a knot once it was over my ponytail), and covered the entire length of my hair. It kept it so clean!! And I put a bandana on my head. I was out there for 2 1/2 weeks and only washed it twice.
Only problem was, no one could see my hair and wondered why the hell I was called RAPUNZEL.
LOL.

Re: long hair on the playa....
Tue, August 7, 2007 - 8:43 PMI had kinda long hair last year and mostly kept it in a single braid down my back. I was very lucky to be in a camp with a good shower so I could wash it everyday. I found, after the first day, that combing it out with conditioner in it before I rinsed helped very much!
(cut off to just above my shoulders now!) -

Re: long hair on the playa....
Wed, August 8, 2007 - 3:15 PMThe first few years I attended I had short hair and it wasn't an issue at all.
As it grew, it definitely became problematic. Two years ago I wound up with dreads from the dust and heat I guess, which I was able to finally comb out.
I often simply wear my hair in a bun - braids are great too.
I'm doing dreads right now [the natural way: no combing] - anyone out there have any suggestions for caring for them while I'm on the playa?
happy happy burn burn!

Re: long hair on the playa....
Wed, August 8, 2007 - 3:35 PMDo the bun it works well and you wont have to worry about braidlock when you desire to wash your hair. Im not sure about your camp but all the girls love to get there hair washed on the playa. I would not suggest the mad braid look since there are about 30.000 other girls with the same style. originality is rare out on the playa. -

Wig?
Tue, August 21, 2007 - 10:53 AMOh dear, I got a long-haired wig that I just love me in, even if it's a hotter head I'll be sporting. After reading all this, I wonder if I should take it back or just not worry about how dirty it gets while I'm there. Any advice?? -

Re: Wig?
Tue, August 21, 2007 - 10:55 AMThe wig or your hair? Isnt the point of the wig to keep your hair safer? Who cares if the wig gets dirty...I guess you shouldnt bring anything you want to keep in good shape...

Re: long hair on the playa....
Fri, September 7, 2007 - 9:09 AMBetter late then never
I braided my hair into 2 long braids but used a long 4" wide strip of fabric. When I braided it in I kept my hair as 1 strand and doubled the strip, wrapped it at the top and used the 2 fabric strands as the other 2 braid pieces. My hair stayed wrapped and protected. When I redid the braids I only brushed the top so as not to spead the dust lower.
The dust is 'alkaline' and very drying.
wrapping kept my hair from dammage, and it makes the braids seem thicker, the fabric is pretty.

Re: long hair on the playa....
Thu, August 23, 2007 - 1:31 PMBM Virgin '06. Due to the acidic nature of the playa dust, it can damage hair if not properly cared for. Tight braids that appear fuzzy = broken hair. I have hair past my shoulders and favored a bun with an alligator clip. Slathered on the conditioner and left it in. At night, when I let it down, it was long and curly - people wondered how I used a curling iron in my tent! Also, for washing - I used a 5-gal bucket in my tent with @ 3 inches of water. Dipped my head in and swirled the hair around. Not comfortable for the body, but sure cleaned the scalp. It was necessary to do in the tent because of the frequent dust storms last year.
