Best Listserv for BM Theme Camps?

Hi,

Our theme camp needs a new email discussion forum (Listserv?). It needs to be free and handle at least 100 members. We want to be able to share photos, files and other posts without approval, but new members need to be approved. We want individual posts to go to members email, but a digest mode would be nice.

It needs to be VERY easy to use

What's the cool, new, uber-groovy way to do this?

Thanks for the help!

Ray

I'm a BM Virgin, working like a mad woman to make it to BM 2010. I realised that wearing my prescription eyeglasses are probably not optimal with the dust. Are there any goggles that work over eyeglasses? I'm not completely blind w/o them, but everything is awful fuzzy. I appreciate all the great advice that's out there! :)

Burned by the Man

Well, I had a ticket for Reno the Saturday before Burning Man. I had a ride arranged up to the playa, my luggage was paid for and I had two nights in a hotel already paid for (no refund). However, I had a problem in customs. The woman at the desk waved and smiled and said "Have a nice time in Phoenix." I corrected her and said "Reno."

The woman's eyes went really big for a second, then she composed herself. She gave me a forced smile, and told me to go though the green doors.

When I got into customs, the very first thing they said to me was "RENO? BURNING MAN?" He turns to his friends and says "Have you heard of Burning Man? Oh, we know all about Burning Man! That's when they Burn the Man. Sometimes though, the man burns you!"

Then they told me to lean against a conveyor belt while they searched through my stuff. They asked if I had any marijuna on me, and of courseI didn't. However, since I read on the Toronto regional packing list for Burning Man that rolling papers are hard to obtain in Nevada, I bought five packs of rolling papers and put them in my carry on luggage. I thought these would make good gifts.

(Turns out this is false. I called the hotel I had been booked at and apparently rolling papers are available for sale in Nevada. I am Canadian I know very little about the laws of the United States, so when people tell me that they don't sell rolling papers in a certain state I believe them. I went to the Motorcycle rally in Sturgis, South Dakota last year and someone told me that they stopped selling rolling papers in that specific town, for the duration of the Motorcycle rally.)

I also brought all my Tobacco pipes with me. The guy was suspicious. "If these are tobacco pipes, where is the tobacco?" I told him I left all the tobacco at home because I thought it was extra weight. He said something like "You sure do like to smoke all those tobacco pipes, don't you James?" I said "Sure."

He asked me what I do for a living, and I told him I was self-employed. I do airbrushing and silkscreening on T-shirts. I was bringing my airbrushes to Burning Man as well, as part of Sin Camp. I was supposed to do airbrushing on people as well as shirts. This made him suspicious. I imagine he was thinking I was planning on setting up an illegal airbrushing business in Reno.

He asked why I was bringing so much stuff with me. (two 50 lbs. duffel bags, carry on, and personal item). I told him I had to survive on my own in the desert for a week. He said 'There's going to be other people there, won't they all be able to help you out?" I told him that we were expected to be self-sufficient.

The night before the flight, my family was helping me to pack and prepare. Everyone in my family were giving me things such as money for the trip, and goods to give as gifts. The border guy held up a bag of about fifty tiny red maple-leaf pins and called other border guards over to see it.. "Would you look at that? What do you make of that?" The whole concept of 'giving gifts' seemed to make them suspicious.

He was pretty suspicious that I was getting a one way ticket to the event, and getting a ride back to Toronto in an RV. "You have a lot of gear packed, and a one way ticket. How do I have any assurance that you will be coming back into Canada?" "I own a house here (in Canada)" I told him. He asked me this four times. I actually had a receipt for the deposit for the return trip home, but he neither asked me for it...nor did I remember to present it for him.

In the end, the only thing they could deny me access was because I brought along a bottle of anti-depressant medication. I have been previously diagnosed with depression, and the doctor gave me these meds a long time ago. The Doctor who prescribed them has since quit her practice. I didn't think that there would be a problem with bringing legal prescription drugs across the border.

Now thanks to the Homeland Securities Department and the Patriot Act, they want me to get a note from MY DOCTOR as well as THEIR DOCTOR, attesting to the fact that my psychiatric condition does not render me a danger to myself or others. This is a problem for me, because I haven't seen a psychiatrist for two years.

Unless I get this form filled out, I will never be permitted into the United States again, at all, ever. It will cost me $250 to file this form, and could cost $350 an hour if the Doctor has to call a lawyer or Psychiatrist. Also, this form has to be renewed every five years. This puts me in a difficult situation. My best friend married an American woman, and now lives in the United States. He wanted me to come and visit with him.

At first, I was confident that I could get this wrapped up in time to make Burning Man this year. However, it turns out that the U.S. customs Doctor will be away for this week. My father's Doctor friend advised me that I have to be very, very careful about this whole thing, or I will never be allowed into the U.S. ever again. He also told me that this will take weeks if I am lucky, and most likely months.

I really didn't see this coming. I don't even take the Paxil anymore, I just tossed it into my bag as a last minute thing. I didn't see a problem with it, since it is a legal prescription drug.

I think some of the problems were:

1) Going through Toronto airport, instead of Buffalo. I didn't think Toronto would be as much of a problem as Buffalo, since my name (not me) also happens to be on a 'No Fly' list.

2) Booking a one-way ticket: I had the choice of booking a two-way ticket, but a fellow Burner from Toronto was offering a ride back in his RV for about the same price. A cross country trip in an RV seemed to be more convenient, not to mention more fun. The customs guy seemed to think I was planning on staying, working and living illegally in Reno though.

3) Rolling papers: It was suggested on the Toronto local list to pack along rolling papers, since I was falsely informed that they are hard to get in Nevada. I brought five packs, since I thought they would be good for gifts. Customs didn't believe me that they were for tobacco, and they also said that you could buy rolling papers in any store in Reno (Which seems to be the case).

4) The pipes, although they are tobacco pipes, seemed to be a problem as well. Apparently, it is very unusual to smoke tobacco in a pipe anymore.

Bringing the paxil was obviously a very big mistake as well. For some reason, I was anticipating being depressed. I really wish I would have flushed all that pharmaceutical crap down the toilet a year ago like I wanted to do. The thing that stopped me was considering that it would end up in everyone else's drinking water.

I have about a dozen to twenty people down there expecting me to show up, and some that were even counting on me.

-I already have paid for a hotel room booked in Reno for two days. A woman (Kim) was planning on staying in this hotel room with me.
-I booked an RV to get up there with two other people, that was supposed to pick me and my gear up sunday. (Wille Wylie and Glenn)
-Some people from my camp were expecting me to show up. (Stag Camp). Especially John (Mzfit).
-There are about five people from 'Tribe' that I was looking forwards to meeting on Wednesday. (Rhino, Rockstar)
-'Sin City' camp was looking forwards to having an airbrush artist there. I would be airbrushing people's bodies as well as shirts. Besides himself, I would be the only other airbrush artist working to my knowledge.
-Also, there was someone from Toronto who I already gave $100 deposit to so that he would hold my spot on the RV, for the return trip to Toronto on Sunday evening.

There is the matter of the $1000 already invested as well. I suppose I can try to get the airplane ticket transferred to next year, if I can't make it this year. There is no refund for the Hotel, and no refund for the Burning Man ticket. Hopefully, two other Burners will be able to share the hotel room that is already paid for.

UPDATE: I have been told that the biggest issue was getting a one-way ticket. This is a big red flag to the U.S. customs that this person might be intending to live and work illegally in the United States. I had no idea that this was the case. I didn't think there would be a problem with getting a one-way ticket to Reno, then getting a ride back to Toronto in an RV. From the perspective of customs, I might not have been stopped at all if I didn't have a one way ticket. The fact that I was a foreigner with a one-way ticket to the United States compounded and magnified all of the other things.

August 10, 2005

To Whom It May Concern:

Burning Man is a weeklong arts festival held in the Black Rock Desert of Nevada. During the week of the event, participants from all over the
world convene to build a temporary city dedicated to self-expression,
interactive art and gift giving. One of the values we uphold readily as a community is that of non-commercialization. We operate on a gift
economy emphasizing the principles of self-reliance and gift giving.
Nothing at our event is for sale other than ice and coffee drinks, the
proceeds of which are donated to the local community.

Tickets are $135-$300 depending upon when they are purchased. Funds from ticket sales are wholly dedicated to paying for the essential services we require during the event. This in no way includes entertainment. There is no centrally booked nor paid entertainment whatsoever at the event – it is dependent upon participants to
provide the entertainment as a form of gift-giving.

We ask that you realize the Canadian citizens coming into the United
States to attend the Burning Man festival are not paid agents, receiving no monies whatsoever from the Burning Man Organization nor from their fellow participants. For this reason, we ask you grant them entry into the U.S. with the express understanding that they do not require a visa to work in the U.S.

We thank you for your time and prompt attention in helping Canadian
citizens expedite their entry into the U.S.

Sincerely,

Sod and Evaporation Pond

Ok here is a random thought that just popped into my head that I would like people's thoughts on.

We are considering bringing a small patch of Sod to lay on under some shade. I have heard of it done before with people using cooler water on it. I was thinking it would not be fitting to lay the sod directly on the playa with the take what you bring, so I was thinking you would need to lay the Sod on some tarping. So then my brain twisted the thought into this:

Would making a box evaporation pond work with Sod laid over half? It would be some eco friendly water from a shower and some cooking.

This could be a totally stupid idea but my brain is too tired for a good evaluation so I put the question to you.

Advice for my first year in a tent please!

Hi there. So last year was my first year and I slept in the back of a minivan, but that didn't work very well for multiple reasons (too hot and I killed the car battery too many times). So this year I'm going in a tent, but I've got a couple questions that I'm hoping a more experienced burner might be able to answer for me.

1. I'm planning on covering the mesh windows with old sheets from the thrift store. I've washed the sheets and I've got gaffer's tape all ready to attach. I'm going to set up the tent and then cut the sheets to size. But my questions is, do I attach the sheets to the inside or to the outside of the tent windows?

2. Do I need to put a tarp down on the playa below my tent? What are the pros and cons to this? And if I do need to do this, how much larger than the tent should the tarp be? I got a little scrap of carpet for just outside the door to help reduce tracking dust inside and another little scrap for comfort inside.

3. I got some Aluminet to put over my tent for shade. It is OK to just attach that down to the same stakes (3-foot rebar) that are holding the tent down or should I put up an EZ-Up (without the fabric) and attach the Aluminet to the EZ-Up poles over the tent?

4. Also, in a big storm, are things likely to blow around inside of my tent? For example, if I set up a little card table to eat at or get ready at inside my tent, should I secure it down so it won't blow around or will it be somewhat protected because it is inside my tent?

And if you have any other tips/tricks/advice for tent camping, I'd really appreciate it. I haven't been tent camping since I was a kid and I'm a little nervous. I plan to set up the whole thing this Saturday to test it out. Thanks for any help you can provide!

Keeping a dome cool...

It is official, I have shelter, a dome...thing. It is a nylon material.

@ 20x20, 9ish feet tall in the center

Three smallish doors that zipper, no mesh.

Clear plastic windows that have covers (with pockets = awesome).

There's a round hole at the top, no mesh. I'm wondering about putting a fan up there, to pull air up and out.

It has holes all along the bottom, that I was thinking I need to close up. They're like...drawstring, and can be pulled shut, but not 100% totally.

Or leave them open to help circulation with the fan pulling out hot hair...

I am also wondering about the rain fly. I won't need it for rain. Would it make the heat worse by adding another layer or provide some shade?

I recalled reading somewhere about using the shade thing on the outside to create some sort of layer of air, or keep the hot air a layer off the actual tent...but I can't find what I was reading.

best goggles?

Heyas,

I'm looking for recommendations on the best goggles for dust that don't steam up excessively or are too uncomfortable. I've used the popular brazing/cutting goggles that are highly sealed and look like big bug-eyed sunglasses (they also come in clear safety glasses configuration), which I found were way too steamy despite the manufacturer's claim about venting.

I see people using ski goggles and a few other types. Anyone have any tips on whether something else might be better?

Warning. Ticket Scam (repost from main Burningman Tribe - if a duplicate please delete)

>The current scam going this year is being perpetrated by a woman
> called v Angela or Miss Angela, angelaconsulting@live.com
> 917-822-1986. She's in SoCal and is giving people real ticket numbers
> but they are from tickets she doesn't have. People are wiring her
> money and then she's not mailing the tickets.
>
> As usual, the cops don't do anything until someone gets scammed so
> Burning Man contacting the authorities doesn't get anywhere. It has to
> be from the person who the crime was committed against.
>
> So, warn your friends and whatever you do, use a dummy email
> address or non traceable phone if you want to do something silly like phone
> her or email her and tell her what a schmuck she is.
>
> This is SO what we don't like to hear this time of year. Sigh...

I am in charge of organizing the water for our camp of 21 people this year. Last year we were unable to rent water containers on the way into the BM so this year we're hoping to plan further ahead and reserve some. Does anyone know of a place that will rent ~400 gallons worth of water between Santa Cruz and Reno (preferrable on the other side of the mountains from here)?

Listen to BMIR 94.5 FM on the playa - Station info for 2009

Bobzilla here, Station Manager of BMIR, Burningman Information Radio, 94.5 FM on the playa.

What is BMIR ?

BMIR is the BMORG’s radio station. The permit with the BLM states that Burningman must provide a radio station in case any emergency information needs to get out to the city. But that’s not all we do………….BMIR is your 24/7 source for music, news, artist interviews, madness and more. We are located right in Center Camp, just to the left of Playa Info. Come on by and say hello. Come and hang out. We have a nice shaded lounge area with several comfy couches for you to rest your bones. We have DJ’s who are on the air late into the night so there is almost always someone around. There are usually several people around as much of the station staff camps right there.

Why Listen to BMIR?

In the case of an emergency, or severe weather, tune into BMIR for official instructions on what to do. Listen to BMIR to find out what’s going on in the city. If there is anything you need to know, like what time will the man burn, what time does the man close to people so they can get it ready for the burn, etc. BMIR is where you want to go for the official info right from the BMORG.

Listen online before you leave for BRC.-

We will be streaming at http://www.BMIR.org starting sometime on Thursday August 27th (maybe even late Wednesday) and simulcast on http://www.ShoutingFire.com com during the entire event. So while you are at home getting ready and packing, tune in on the internet and find out how the city is coming together, what the weather is like, before you get there.

If you can’t join us on the playa this year, we’ll be streaming during the entire event. Many people tell us that listening to BMIR made them feel like they were part of the event even though they could not be there.

Start trying to tune in when you reach Gerlach. If you’re sitting in a big line of cars at the gate, tune in, well keep you entertained and informed.

Tune in During Exodus –

As soon as the Temple burns on Sunday we will start bringing you up to date information on Exodus. We will tell you when it’s a good time to leave the city, how long it will take you to get from the city past the gate top the highway. We bring you this information all day Monday, the 7th as well.

Promote your camps events on BMIR Come by and record a PSA

Is your camp having an event, do want BRC to come by your camp and hang out? Do you have a performance that you want people to participate in?

Every day during the event, from 12N to 5PM we are open for you to come by to record your public service announcements, come on by and record a PSA. We’ll play it and let the rest of Black Rock City know about it. We have a staff of seasoned volunteers ready to help you create your announcement.

OR record your announcement at home before you get to the playa

Many camps create PSA way before they get to the playa and bring us a CD. Or you can email us your announcement before 8/25. Please submit PSA’s in MP3 format

You can email them to jkanizzle@shoutingfire.com or Bobzilla@Burningman.com

Now if you’d like to create something ahead of time, but don’t really know how to, we’ve got you covered.

JKanizzle our audio production guru has put together a video that shows you how to download and install free audio recording software and how to use it to make your PSA complete with music and sound effects. It’s about 23 minutes long and is a really great tutorial. You can view it at :

http://www.veoh.com/browse/videos/category/educational_and_howto/watch/v188479838g5przNm

The BMIR Daily Cocktail Party –

Everyday day during the event at 5PM, we have a cocktail party featuring a special guest. Want to meet the artists who are building the Temple? Want to meet the Flaming Lotus Girls? Come on by. We’re still firming up the schedule but we’ll post it here soon and we’ll be announcing it on the air as well. Come by for a drink!

Tune in for Your Morning Bobzilla

I’d be remiss if I didn’t take this opportunity to plug my own show. I do the morning show every day on the playa from 730A to 10A because no one else is crazy enough to get up that early. If you’re just getting home after a long night out, I’ll chill you out and if you’re just getting up, I’ll ease you into the day. I have tons of special guests stopping by all week long and will give you weather information. If there is anything HUGE that happens in the outside world that you just really should know about, I’ll tell you. Start your day with me, come by have coffee, we’ll talk.

See you on the playa!
Bring an FM radio with you to the playa.

I’ve been working in commercial, public and underground radio since 1979 and I am always amazed by the depth and quality of radio programming available on the playa.

Running a radio station is a shitload of work and the folks who bring you these stations are seasoned pros who have high standards and are dedicated to bringing you quality radio.

As of now, there will be 17 FM radio stations on the playa. Collectively we broadcast music, interviews, information, public service announcements and more. Most of us broadcast 24/7 on the playa.

During those hot daytime hours, when you’re just sitting around your camp, sipping a cocktail, if no one in your camp is spinning, tune into one of Black Rock City’s many fine radio stations.

Like wise if your camp has a large sound system, when you’re not entertaining the masses with a DJ, please consider switching over to a playa radio station during your downtimes.

Here is the current station line up as of today, 8/7/09

88.9 - Radio Electra
90.3 - KROAR
92.1 - Misfit Burner Radio
92.5 - Hot Hits of the 80’s
94.5 - BMIR (Burningman Information Radio)
95.7 - Fusion Valley Radio
98.5 - DubStep FM
99.1 - The BRBC (Black Rock Broadcasting Corporation)
99.5 - Radio Free Burningman
102.3 - SOMA FM
103.3 - Spacenight
104.7 - Black Rock F/X
105.1 - Radio Barking Dog
105.5 - BBC (Bouncy Bouncy Club)
106.5 - K-SVERT “The Flame-Thrower on the Esplanade” (also has a live music stage)
107.3 - Flatulence Amplification Research Team – F.A.R.T. Radio
107.9 - Death Guild Radio Thunderdome

I’ll post an update as we get closer to the event. What kind of radio should you bring? Lots of camps bring a boom box that has a line out input on the back. That makes it easy to hook up to your camps sound system and power off your generator. Some people bring smaller radios that run on batteries. We make great early morning or late night in tent entertainment.

So bring a radio, you won’t regret it.

A couple of years ago I downloaded a great map someone had done that had a list of camps on the back, and detailed locations of bigger camps on the front. It was called the GoMap and I believe it was put out by someone called Tank. Anyone know Tank and knows if he is doing one for 2009? They were great gifts to give out on the playa!

Word to the wise. People have been dumping greywater on the playa in disturbingly increasing numbers in the past few years. It was announced today at The Way It Is meeting (the last all staff meeting before the playa) that the BLM is over this. LEO will be cracking down on this. So be advised, you gotta carry it out.

Evap pond question

Q #1 - What is the best way to keep the plastic sheeting inside the pond from blowing upward when wind passes underneath? My thought is to put a few bricks inside along the wood.

Q #2 - Is it necessary to fasten to wood frame to the playa? I don't remember that being done in past camps that I've been in, but I wasn't really paying attention to the construction of the evap pond, either.

Thanks -

How to make a ventilated tent dust proof?

We have an 8 person Coleman Rock Springs tent. It is fabulous....except the entire ceiling is made of mesh (for ventilation). Of course there is a rain fly to go over it, and this will be great for airing out in the hot Black Rock middays...but we are worried about dust getting in through the vents.

Any tips on providing more dust security? We thought of duct taping the rain fly to the tent but figure that the hot hot sun would melt it to the tent material.

Here's the link on the tent:

Some of mine:
more socks
more variety of food, and this time, actual real food, not just Tasty Bites meals
a couple more towels
the most comfortable footwear I own

What are some of your ideas for raising an air mattress above the ground for air flow for both coolness and warmth? I heard a good way is to make a raised platform with milk crates and a plywood base. Has anyone tried this before and did it work for you? My biggest concern is that the plywood would dip in the middle or put a splinter into the mattress. Any ideas would be appreciated.

What can I tell ya -- it's basically a copy of the back end of a claw hammer. Weld a handle and a couple of 6" pieces of 1/2" box tube onto a piece of angle iron, and there ya go! To use it, just put it up on that thar piece of rebar and give it a tap with yer toe to set it, then lean back on the handle and watch the most stubborn pieces lift right up out of the playa.
I'm not sure how to put the pic here, so it's in the gallery. See y'all on the Playa, papayas!

Help me out here. I've been to one BM several years back, and now I want to go again. The question is how to join in with the right camp with the right group of people. My particular lifestyle might narrow down the choices.

I am a free agent, financially independent ("indy"?) I am a vegetarian who does yoga. I like it quiet sometimes. I play guitar and sing. I take no drugs. I drink a little socially. I have been to some Rainbow Gatherings in USA and world. I live remotely in the woods with a homebuilt PV solar system. I instruct Thai Yoga Massage. Heterosexual. Veteran. Reasonably good health.

Please advise as to what group(s) I might fit in with --- and to contact for a good campsite fit at BM.

Shade Structure

I know this question has been asked countless times, and I am sorry for that. I looked through everything that I could trying to find out a good option, and I am still left with nothing. This is my 3rd year, and I don't have a structure of my own. First year, I crashed at someone else's camp, so I didn't have to worry about shade. Last year, I had a cheap 10' x 10' shade structure that we had to constantly reinforce with rebar, duck tape, and zip ties. It didn't make it through Saturday. So now I find myself trying to put together something yet again. I don't want to spend a lot, but I want something that will last through the week. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

reasonable el wire?

I am looking for place/website to purchase el wire at a reasonable price. (I had a negative experience with one place where I ordered and neve received my product. I tried to get a refund to no avail.) I just want to get enough el wire to decorate myself and a friend for evening wear for under $40. Is this impossible? Willing to invest more for greater savings.

Any reccomendations of good folks or reat sites, that you have personally had a positive experience with, would be highly appreciated!

Thanks!

OK every year I start buying stuff on my birthday, May 1, for burning man. It is a great present to myself and it also makes it so don't have to buy everything all at once. But, I am drawing a blank. I need help. What should I start ordering now.

I have:
flashlights
mini flashlights
shower
bandana
face mask
misters
tent
cooler...
Please give a few tips and refresh my memory.

yurts & tents

Same old topic, I guess.. I have a big nylon tent, but as this is my first burning man, I read that people think the canvas tents hold up better to the duststorms, etc, I was checking out kodiak tents when I came across the yurt idea..

Does anyone have any experience with these:

http://cgi.ebay.com/SIBLEY-400-Tent-canvas-yurt-teepee-chillout-reenactment_W0QQitemZ370184449767QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item370184449767&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1205|66%3A2|65%3A12|39%3A1|240%3A1318|301%3A1|293%3A1|294%3A50

My main concern would be that all the tie offs would make the whole outside tricky to walk around without tripping.. But I guess if the tent is out of the way enough it won't be a big deal???

Thoughts?

Ok so I'm kinda over the generator for my camp. I'm sick of neighbors complaining about the noise, I'm sick of all the gasoline, and I want to possibly simplify, plus it would be kinda green of me, which means I can be a dick to everyone that has a generator *joke*.

So my question (since I know nothing about it) is, how do I do it? How much would it cost?
I'm with a pretty small camp, and all I would only need it for is a stereo and some lights pretty much. Maybe a few other miscellaneous things. so I wouldn't need that much power. One thing I would like to specify is I need power at night and not just when the sun is up.

Thanks ahead of time.

Mungo's Playa Foot Remedy

Okay, I am pleased to report that Mungo's formula for preventing Playafoot actually worked really well. No drying, no cracking, no fungi. . . .I was amazed, because on my last desert trips I thought my feet would fall off (or was afraid they Wouldn't) . It works so Im repeating it:

2oz extra virgin olive oil (EVOO is high acid)
8 drops teatree essential oil
8 drops lavender essential oil
4 drops eucalyptus essential oil.

I bathed my feet twice a day in vinegar water and then dried thoroughly and applied this stuff. Apparently tea tree and lavender are fungicidal. No problems.

According to Mungo it also works on athelete's foot and to a lesser degree on nail fungus.

A Single Person's Heart Guide to Burning Man
Wed, August 15, 2007 - 12:10 PM
original post by "OH TONY" a great post

As a single, hetero man, I know from experience that Burning Man can be a wonderful and crushing experience. Usually both, often at the same time. I can hardly think of a single guy who has shown up at the playa alone and not wanted to hook up with someone. The fact is, this desire can ruin your BM experience (actually, it just makes you think that your experience is ruined). I have found that there are lessons that I have had to learn multiple times. After last year, as soon as I got back, I made notes to myself for this year, while the experience was still fresh in my mind. Now, as the burn approaches, I am taking what I have learned this year and adding to last year’s notes. I thought to myself, “I wish someone had told me this stuff before I went to Burning Man.” So, I decided to post it here. Many points have been offered by other people at one time or another. This is just my collection.

Be present.
This is, in my opinion, the most important thing. As in the default world, all we really have at Burning Man is the now. You can’t even say that you will have 7 days of nows, because anything could happen. So, just experience every single moment fully. If you find yourself thinking about how sweet it would be to hook up with that hottie you just met or how it would suck if she didn’t show up when you guys were supposed to meet, stop. Look around. Burning Man is happening all around you right now. Experience it. Now. This is why you came. Don’t miss it. If you put being at Burning Man above getting laid at Burning Man, you will have a far richer experience. And, you will increase your chances of getting laid at Burning Man.

When in doubt, say “Yes”
When offered anything, material, interactional or spiritual at Burning Man, unless you think that that this would be a “bad thing” for you, say “yes”. Yes opens up new possibilities. Yes is fun. And, Yes is usually sexy. Conversely, if you don’t think it’s a good thing for you, then definitely say no. Multiple times, and loudly if need be.

Have no expectations.
Expect nothing, not even a good time or a shitty time at Burning Man. Expect nothing from others. Especially, do not expect to have sex at Burning Man. Even if you go with a lover or possible lover, do not expect to have sex with them, or anyone else for that matter.

Be prepared
The other side of the expectation rule. Understand the difference. Do not expect to hook up with someone, but be prepared if you do. Bring what you need. Get tested, if you haven’t already.

Give
Give your time, your attention, your trinkets, your love, your admiration, your beer, your energy, your opinion, your hand, your heart, your enthusiasm. Give everything you can think of.

Make contact
Talk to as many interesting people as possible. Then, talk to some people that you would normally talk to. Always have a notepad and something to write with. Take pictures of people and take notes to go with them. Get email/phone numbers.

Use alternatives to sex
You don’t have to have intercourse to be intimate with someone. Massages are, of course, a good option. One of my favorites is the foot bath. Bring a small tub and some nice soap and lotion for after. Also, there is cuddling, eye-gazing, you get the point. Often, it is the non-sexual play that leads to other things. If not, well, it’s all good anyway.

Take responsibility for your joy
If you find yourself in a situation that you don’t want to be in, don’t not blame others. Blame, anger will probably not make anything any better. So, take responsibility for your attitude, your survival, your joy. Remember that you always have three choices: Accept the situation, change the situation or leave the situation. Pick one of the three, then be at peace.

For example, here’s a personal tip. I set a waiting time for meet-ups. For me, it’s 15 minutes. If someone says that they will meet me at a certain time, and they are not there, or we miss each other for whatever other reason, after 15 minutes, I’m free to do whatever I want (including waiting longer). In any case, it takes away any anger or disappointment. It puts me in control. And, while I’m waiting, I am fully experiencing the moment.

Communicate clearly
In your dealing with people, make sure that you are clear in your intentions. Make no assumptions. Ask the questions you need answers to. Be tactful, but direct. Clear communication is sexy.

Use drugs wisely
If you use drugs, then plan your drug usage ahead of time. Consider doing no drugs at all. There’s nothing worse that happening upon a possible playa buddy, then being too fucked up to have any fun.

Keep a journal
A journal will prove invaluable to you, even if you never go to Burning Man again. It is so easy to forget all of the thoughts you had on the playa. Don’t wait until you get back to camp to write. Jot a quick note down in the moment.

Get rest
You cannot go to The Deep End every afternoon, then go out dancing every night. You must plan for down time. You should not dance until sunrise unless you can sleep late the next day. Get plenty of sleep before you drive home.

Don’t fuck people in your camp.
If you can avoid it, “Don’t shit where you eat.” Understandably, sometimes, you just gotta do what you gotta do. But, there are thousands of other people in BRC. Inter-camp hook-ups usually end up badly.

Read, then keep “The Four Agreements”
If you haven’t read “The Four Agreements” by Don Miguel Ruiz, I highly suggest it. It’s a quick, but invaluable read. If you aren’t driving, you can probably finish it on the way to Burning Man. If you are driving, get the audiobook. In any case, it puts you in a great headspace when you hit BRC.

Don’t forget the art
Burning Man is one of the most amazing art exhibits in the world. Experience as much of it as you can. Interact with it. Take pictures of it. Talk about it with other people who are experiencing it with you. This is one lesson that I forget every year.

Be grateful
Do you realize how lucky/blessed you are to be at Burning Man? Then give thanks, to the the people who sell you ice, to the Rangers, to your campmates, to the stranger who is now a friend, to (your dogma here) for creating the playa, the sky above it and the mountains that surround it. Give thanks, verbally and in your heart. You can’t do it enough.

If anyone has any other tips from the heart for Burning Man, I would love to read them.

Dusty kisses

A Couples guide to Burningman

Here's the guide for those going with a partner.

***************

http://www.burningman.com/preparation/event_survival/relationships.html

RELATIONSHIP SURVIVAL GUIDE

By velvona(at)hotmail(dot)com

Have you ever traveled with a friend overseas, or crossed the country in a car? By the time your journey is over, one of two things has happened: you have become closer and bonded for life, or you never want to speak to each other again.

Burning Man is completely different from any traveling you might do, but in many respects, it's the same as any other journey. The people you camp with can make your experience stellar-righteous, or turn it in to a living hell. We've all heard stories about people marrying people they've met on the playa, or meeting friends, future roommates and co-workers. But for each good story, there is a corresponding one about friends and lovers parting ways after their week in the desert.

Here are a few tips that might help you preserve relationships of all sorts at Burning Man, culled from the experiences of people who have been there before.

The People-Unfriendly Playa

Like dogs, some people just don't belong at Burning Man. Got a girlfriend who goes into convulsions when she can't find a place to plug in her blow dryer? Does your best friend hate crowds? Do yourself a favor, and leave them at home. Not only will they have a horrible time and complain all week long, but you will end up babysitting, and will resent them for ruining your vacation. This is a huge issue for couples. Trust us, the time apart will do you good....

Know Thy Campmates

Black Rock City is happening at night. You'll be out frolicking and enjoying the sights after the sun goes down, but what will you do when the sun is up? You'll be sitting under your shade structure with the people you came with, day in and day out. This bonding time can be incredibly fun, provided you like everyone in your camp. In 1994, I attended Burning Man for the first time with eight hardy, easygoing and resourceful individuals...and one neurotic and insecure woman who we invited on a whim. Her incessant and inane babbling had us all running for cover in the next camp. If you've ever stayed out late to avoid your roommate or spouse, you know this game. This is your home for the week. As such, it should be as comfortable as possible.

You say Tomato, I say Tomahto

With any organized group, people tend to fall into their natural roles. If you have a large group, chances are you will have somebody who becomes Mama, Chief Construction Foreman, Organizer of Outings or Head Chef, to name a few. It's good, though, to make sure everybody in your group has similar goals, and that they will pull their weight equally. Like Dog People v. Cat People, the People Who Want Party All Night and Eat Food Out of a Can should not camp with the People Who Prepare Elaborate Meals and Do Yoga Every Morning. You don't want to end up taking care of a bunch of people who aren't taking care of themselves.

Welcome to Camp Dis/Harmony

Theme camps require huge amounts of cooperation and effort. Everyone in your group needs to be committed to building and/or staffing your space. Make sure people know what is expected of them ahead of time, and find out how people want to contribute. Nothing will tear you apart quicker than making assumptions on what others have committed to. Ambitious projects quickly become forced marches when only a couple of people shoulder the load. Don't get upset when things don't come together on the first day. People will need time to acclimate, unwind and decompress when they arrive. And don't forget to factor in the unpredictable weather. If your theme camp comes together by Friday, you'll be doing better than many.

Playa Time

That old expression, "Best of Plans Mislaid" is especially apropos to the Burning Experience. There's a lot to do and see, and simple tasks take much longer than you think they will. People get sidetracked, caught up, distracted and too busy to keep their promises. Prior to the event, it probably seemed like a great idea to hook up with friends Thursday evening at sundown, but when Thursday evening rolls around, a nap seems like a much better idea. Unfortunately, you can't pick up the phone and let them know you won't be making it. Cut yourself, and your friends, some slack, and don't take it personally. It's not that they don't love you: most likely they were too exhausted to make the effort.

Take Care of Yourself

It takes about two minutes to become over-stimulated at Burning Man. Between the people, the sights and the sounds, you will find yourself in a place where the rules have changed and few things are what they seem. Add in a couple of days of exertion in the heat, sleep deprivation, mild dehydration and decreased appetite, and you may find yourself feeling a bit edgy. Chances are you will take it out on those people who are closest to you. When you find yourself getting ready to pitch a hissy fit, stop. Get out of the sun. Drink some water. Eat some food. Take a nap. There. Don't you feel better?

Sex and the Single Burner

Once upon a time, I did a stint as an advice columnist. Here is the answer to a question I received.

Q. I'm going out to Burning Man for the first time and I'm curious about the sexual energy involved. Could the Goddess of Love give me a survival guide to sex at Burning Man?

A. As you state, there is a lot of sexual energy swirling and whirling about, much like a little hippie chick at a Dead show. Anything and everything can and will happen when you stick a bunch of 20th century homo sapiens in an empty desert. Here's the inside skinny that will make your journey through the sexual side of Black Rock City more pleasant.

* Figure out what you want. Love? Sex? Your wildest fantasies? It's all there for the taking. And for goodness sake, make sure the person across from you wants the same thing. If she or he doesn't, there are 500 others who do. Don't go breakin' no hearts.
* Be respectful. Just because people are walking around naked does not necessarily mean they wish *you* were naked in a small enclosed space with them. Learn to take no for an answer, and don't be afraid to use the "n" word yourself.
* Pay attention to your body. The desert is a dangerous place, and the climate alone will push you to the limit physically. Get plenty of rest, monitor your substance intake and carry water with you at all times (you also have to drink the water).
* Always play safe. If your budget for supplies didn't include condoms, stop by and see the fine folks at Safer Sex Camp. They'll hook you up.
* Make love to the playa, and she will love you back. Become one with the sun, the stars, and the omnipresent dust. (Word up to Annie Sprinkle for that piece of advice.)
* Don't be afraid to try new things. If there was ever a space for exploring, this is it! Who knows, you may even like it and want to do it again...and again and again....
* Take responsibility for your own pleasure. You can find anything your little heart desires, but you have to ask for it first! If you don't get what you want, look in the mirror.

Joined at the Hip

Burning Man is particularly hard on couples. If you can make it through Burning Man, you can make it through anything! Here are a couple of pieces of advice from those who have been there.

From Greg X. Presley:
Burning Man has stressed my relationship more than any other single event/episode/situation I can name. There are, however, precautionary measures I can recommend...5 Ways to (Maybe) Keep a Relationship Beyond Burning Man

* Watch each other's hydration! The first sign of dehydration is irritability - a bad mood. Who gets the brunt of that? You and your partner of course - try it yourself. Just skip a few quarts, then pick a fight over anything - works like a charm out on the playa. Of course, you'll probably have to find another ride home.
* Make dates - and keep them. Knowing that your beloved will be back, say, around dusk, to escort/be escorted by you on a pre-planned evening is an effective counter for that 'left behind' feeling. And make your next date as soon as the last one's over, before the glow fades.
* Massage - anytime it's not too hot. Feet especially. Increase your tactile time to compensate for the inevitable shortage of routine relationship reassurances that playa life entails.
* Push boundaries? Nyet! I know it's Burning Man. I know it's about self-expression. Does that matter to the heart? No! Even if he/she says 'it's ok' now...it won't be then, or later.
* Secret treats. You know the drill...flowers and chocolate, wine and cheese, whatever. The name of this game is "I Went to Burning Man but I Thought *Only* About You." If you can't stand playing this one, then better sell one of those two tickets before it's too late.

And finally, some words of wisdom from ActionGrl: Take care of one another. Watch to insure that enough water is going through you both -- more than you think you need. If you don't stay hydrated, you'll be broken up by the end of the event, I can almost guarantee.

Equally important, be sure to take time with and time away from one another. Don't forget that you are individuals. Exposure to the event has a different impact on everyone. One of you may be way into it, while the other might have a hard time adjusting. One of you might be into sitting around camp and making stuff, while the other wants to don costumes and do performance art in the cafe. Don't be pushy and expect your partner to do the same things you want to do at every second.

Spend all the time together you want, but leave room for yourself and your own interests, too. Remember that there are thousands of new friends for you each to meet as well, so each of you should feel encouraged to spend time with other people as well as each other. Still, be sure to schedule plenty of 'dates' together, and keep them. Take time to plan trips around the city with each other, or have a standing date for coffee each day. Just make sure that you honor your time together, but also apart.

And In the End...

Burning Man is an experiment in temporary community. You are free to make new rules, and find different ways of relating with people. Learning more about other human beings -- and yourself -- is a big part of the reason we're here!

I have read about bringing a few large plants and disposing of your grey water in them. Then I heard that you are not allowed to bring live plants into BRC anymore. Are we allowed to bring plants AND are the plants the same after?

Thanks kids!

Come to think of it, will California allow the plants back in?

Ph Balance on the Playa

I had started to cover this on a different thread, but felt it worth starting a new one.

Keeping a neutral Ph balance can make a big difference in your Playa experience. Playa dust has a very high Alkaline content, which if you don't know is opposite of an acid but can be just as damaging. We breath it in, it gets in pores and yea..really dries you out. While moisterising is still needed (the wind and sun), what you really need to do is balance your Ph levels both inside and out.

Inside your body: As humans our bodies tend to be a little more on the Alkaline spectrum to begin with, especially women. For the ladies, taking a little folic acid suppliments is a good idea. Also, eat plenty of acidic foods like tomatoes (spagetti sauce, salsa, soup...lots of canned options here), oranges, lemon/limeade etc. I like to keep plenty of packets of Emergen-C, it has a whole bunch of stuff your body needs out there and helps keep you hydrated (also make nice little gifts). *note* it's better to mix Emergen-C in a single serving size and consume it right away, rather than dump a bunch in your camel pack and let it sit.

Outside your body: A spritz bottle with a little lemon, lime juice or vinegar is your best friend. Lotions alone are not enough, you really need to balance the Ph to be effective. I also wash my hair like this (get it wet with acid based water, then rinse clean), it really helps keep my hair from getting destroyed. So spritz down, wipe off with a damp cloth...it will help out a whole bunch

Your gear: Playa dust destroys most materials over time, it helps rust out metals, dries out plastics, rubber and leather. I use a spray attachment on the end of a hose that introduces 1/2 water 1/2 vinegar and spray down everything when I get home...especially the car, bike and tent. On the car..get underneath it too...tires boot joints etc. I even wipe down the dash and seats with a damp cloth with the acid based mix.

Getting closer!!!

i just found this product that you put in the washing machine that causes your clothes to block more uv rays....
"SunGuard works by washing an invisible shield into clothing that helps block more than 96% of the sun's harmful rays from reaching your skin. With the active ingredient TINOSORB® FD, a UV protectant from Ciba Specialty Chemicals, SunGuard can boost the UPF protection of a white cotton T-shirt from UPF 5 to UPF 30.
if anyone has had a bad experience with this product, or knows that it isn't green, i'd like to know.

Hi everyone,

My finance and I have been to Burning Man before, and this year we are getting married prior to the event. However, we really want to spend our honeymoon there, and have it be the theme to our camp. We have a lot of good ideas so far, but we are constantly looking for more. Please feel free to jump in and suggest what you would do.

Thanks!

Avoid buying tickets the day they first go on sale, lol

Here's my Burning Man tip for next year:

Plan to buy tickets at the third tier level or above, and work that extra $50 to $100 into your budget. Or join the fire conclave to qualify for a discount ticket, or apply for a scholarship or discount ticket if your need dictates. But whatever you do, avoid the online ticket sales the day they first become available! It's always a crap shoot with technical glitches, and you'll save a lot of wear and tear on your psyche to simply purchase your tickets hassle-free later...

Best way to carry extra gas for generator?

(with apologies for crossposting but you all give great tips!)

What's the best way to carry extra gasoline (for the generator) if I'm in a car?

My friends are letting me use their generator so long as I bring the extra gas it will take per day.

Which means about 18 gallons.

I figure I won't bring all of it at once, but make a trip into Empire/Gerlach on the Burner Bus Shuttle to buy more mid-week.

But how do I safely transport extra gas in my little Corolla?

I've talked to an auto parts guy who has 5 gallon containers. He says metal is better than plastic. Any thoughts?

And should I strap it to the top of the car or put it in the trunk?

Thanks!

2009 Tickets Pre-Sale starts 11/14/08

YOU ASKED FOR IT, YOU GOT IT: TICKET PRE-SALE

By popular demand, we are pleased to announce the resurrection of the Burning Man Ticket Pre-sale, in advance of the holidays, for Burning Man 2009! For years we've heard feedback from enthusiastic early-planner types who'd like to be able to gift Burning Man tickets to friends and loved ones at the holidays instead of waiting until January. As always, this year's ticket will illustrate our art theme – Evolution – and we deem it particularly beautiful; a perfect gift. Other participants aren't so concerned about holding out for the lower-priced tickets available on launch day, and would rather get a ticket now, and thus avoid the rush. In answer, we give you the Holiday Ticket Pre-sale.

Here's how it will work: we'll offer 1,000 tickets at $260 each (this will be the third tier ticket price for '09; more details on the full ticket launch will be posted on our web site on December 12). These tickets will be a special allotment and the quantity will NOT come out of any of the pricing tiers for our regular ticket launch on January 14. (And no, it won't affect your chances to try for any of the first or second tier tickets when they're available.)

Pre-sale tickets will be available online beginning Friday, 11/14 at 10:00am PST. Tickets will stay on sale until 11:59pm PST December 28 OR the allotment of 1000 presale tickets run out, whichever comes first.

For all the nitty gritty details, please visit http://tickets.burningman.com

tips for avoiding heat stroke please???

(apologies for crossposting but i'm looking for a myriad of responses.)

last year when i was a virgin, i only stayed the weekend.

this year, i'm staying all week.

and....

i'm a little scared.

i worry over the heat affecting me since i am very susceptible to heat stroke.

i've taken great pains to avoid it.

1. ordered the "ever wet" bandanna thingie which friends told me about which helps you stay cool. it has some kind of crystals that stay wet and keep you cool.

2. am bringing lots of electrolyte fluids like gatorade. will drink said fluids.

3. am staying with the human carcass wash folks who offer plenty of showers to stay cool.

4. offered a friendly dude who's coming with an RV $$ per day to sit inside in his AC (which means i have to tote gas in my car for his RV and pay my share); he's in my camp so i don't even have to walk far....

ok, i realize i'm obsessing over this but that's generally how i do things.

anything i'm missing?????

i got heat stroke last year despite my best efforts and my short stay.

anybody got ideas on how to avoid it?

Weather at night?

Hey guys,

Special thanks for those offering up info on the playa dust reports. We'll bring our super masks this year for sure. But me and my camp are curious: how do the evenings feel? Are they jackets and long underwear evenings, jackets and panties evenings, or even possible panties and just panties evenings? I've read up on Gerlach weather reports but I'd like to hear it straight from the ground floor. As a measuring stick, last year many of our camp were able to just do panties in the evenings, at least until around 3 a.m. Are we that lucky again this year, or are we leaning toward times like those of 2000 when I had the cold colds and mud platforms that envied those of my tranny friends?
Under Age Drinking----Dear Bars on the Playa,

Under Age Drinking
Dear Bars on the Playa,

Well, it is always something. Please take note. This year we have
been informed that local law enforcement would like to see us address
the issue of under age drinking. Though we, the organization, are
not offering alcohol to anyone and are not responsible for your bars,
there are possible consequences for you and us if we did not address
this issue. So, I am sending out this letter to make sure you are
fully informed.

We do not believe that there are any rampant problems with underage
drinking at our event that would merit investigation. Consequently,
we expect that law enforcement will act the same this year as they
have in the past. However, you should be aware of Nevada laws on
under age drinking. Here are some useful facts:

- It is a misdemeanor to serve alcoholic beverages to anyone under 21
years old in Nevada. The law still applies if the alcohol is gifted
as opposed to sold. Theme camps are considered public space and
subject to enforcement of this law. (NRS 202.055)

In 2001 the Nevada State Supreme Court limited the application of NRS
202.055 to only servers who had actual or constructive knowledge that
the person seeking the alcohol was under 21. This means that you
must card someone who looks underage. Conversely, if someone looks of
age you are not required to card him or her.

- It is a misdemeanor for a minor to consume or possess an alcoholic
beverage in a public space (e.g., theme camps, open playa, center
camp, etc. (NRS 202.020)

- It is a misdemeanor to a minor to pass him or herself off as being
of age. (NRS 202.040)

- Misdemeanors carry the following penalties: Up to 6 months in
county jail, and/or a fine up to $1,000. Alternatively, community
service may be sentenced in lieu of, or in conjunction with jail time
and fines. (NRS 176.087)

- If a minor loiters in a place where alcoholic beverages are
consumed (besides a food establishment) then the minor could receive
a fine up to $500. (NRS 202.030) Also, if the person in charge of
the "tavern" allows the minor to loiter then he or she could be fined
up to $500 also. (NRS 202.060)

- Enforcement of the laws is either done by carding the person
outright, or through undercover sting operations.

None of this is new and not terribly different from most other state
laws. It could be worse in other states! No need for alarm. This
letter is merely for information.

Our recommendations -

1. Use good common sense when serving alcohol.
2. Understand your prerogative to serve someone and carefully
consider your options with people who look less than 21.
3. Have an extra person from your camp present while serving alcohol
to act as a witnesses, just in case.
4. Don't get minors drunk. That just isn't cool.

It is worth noting that federal and local law enforcement priorities
differ on this issue. If you find yourself in an unfortunate
encounter please get a badge number and note what agency you are
dealing with. It might come in handy.

Thanks for your time,

CAMPER'S PLAYA NAME or REAL NAME ...or better, both.
CAMP NAME ...and any helpful descriptions of street facade, tents, or large features that might be at this location to help the postie find the addressee
CAMP ADDRESS ...as close as you can get (example: 9:35 and Hummer) &/or nearest cross-street, and even Man-side or mountain-side (if you know)
C/O BRCPO
Burning Man
Gerlach, NV 89412

...and include a return address, just in case.
If you bring extras for others then your gift of stamps is always appreciated.

if you are taking anything new or borrowed you want to try it out before you get to the playa.

buldling a new tent, try it before you get to the playa. we took one of the tents you just open and it pops up, but we did not have directions on how to put it away....took us four hours to get that bad boy put up!

if you are borrowing a bike, try it out and make sure it fits, and is working before you take it to the playa....

using a new cooling system? make sure the dry ice will fit into your cooler, or that the cooler is really airtight....

anything you are doing on playa, work on recreating it, before you get there.

make sure you have all the small parts!!! TRUST ME -- you are not going to want to leave the playa once you arrive!

This is my first burn, and I haven't seen my question addressed. I will be driving up from SF by myself. I'm planning on driving up to Reno Sunday afternoon. I figured I can find a parking lot or casino to crash. My question is..Since I've never been, is it best to arrive at midnight or should I chill in Reno and arrive at daybreak on Monday morning? My concern is the 2 hour drive from Reno by myself in the middle of the night and arriving and trying to setup in the dark. Is this something I should be concerned about? I just don't want to drive a desolate highway by myself that late at night. Thoughts? I swear I'm not a scardy cat:) I just want to be smart and safe.

you can park it at the Walmart, and catch some zzzz's so you can drive safely rested...

its cool with Walmart... prob just park it in a far corner away from the easy customer parking

of course i don't need to say LNT.

see you all in the dust, travel safe

V

ps
i have not experianced this myself, but i have heard it several times from many--- something to do with a family member of the walmart family -- falling asleep while driving, after getting the boot from a road side rest stop during a road trip.

el wire help?

I want to ditch the glow sticks and get some el wire for my bike this year. Anybody know of any reputable companies that sell pre-made bike kits? I want to be able to just pop the thing on the bike and go and not worry about finding my soldering iron. Has anyone had experiences with worldaglow.com? This is one of the sites that I found that has the kits, but I don't know if they are reputable.

after placing your new batteries in your various devices that will be needed on the playa.. take your batteries out and turn them around so as not to accidently turn on (discharge) while you travel on your bumpy road to the playa. last thing you need is your tent light or el wire to be burned out from the drive there. that's moop before you begin.

Last year we saved ten 2 liter soda bottles cleaned them and filled them with tap water and froze them, I still had the same ice in the cooler that I drove in with by the day we left and the 2 liters were the perfect size for sharing and refilling after they melted a bit. It was awesome to have icy cold water all week long and I didnt have to buy ice at all that week for the cooler. Tip, leave the labels on so they can be recycled when you get home or at the BM recycle camp.

Mental Hydration

When virgin Burners ask "What's is the one most important piece of advice for Burning Man, right up there, along with "take care of your feet" and "take a light with you into the porta-potty, but don't look down", is "Stay hydrated", which is usually followed by "Start drinking water before you get to the playa."

As someone who has passed out from dehydration, over-exertion and not eating enough, I know how important staying hydrated is. Taking care of your body at burning man is important. But, it is just as important to take care of your heart and mind. As the trip home he gets closer and closer, I have found myself thinking about the mindset that I want to take with me. And, I've come to realize that just as I need to start hydrating before I get to the playa, I need to start putting myself in a playa state-of-mind now.

It's mental hydration. And, now is the time to start.

Now is the time to start recognizing the beauty that surrounds me here in the default world. Whether it be in a tree, a skyscraper or even the guy who just cut me off on the freeway. There is beauty there. Don't try to look at it. Sense it.

Now is the time to start finding peace. On the playa, when faced with the situation that I do not want, I want to quickly and effortlessly choose between leaving the situation, taking action to change it, or accepting it, then, be at peace with my decision. Whether on the playa or in the default world, I am always responsible for my own joy.

Now is the time to start making connections. I'm talking to strangers more. Asking them questions. And, if they are working in a place that requires them to wear name tag, I tried to say their name and tell them something nice, "Thanks for the fries, Juan!" By the way, walking around in Utilikilts and New Rock boots is like wearing a big badge on you lapel that says, "Ask me about Burning Man!"

This is also the time to practice flirting.

Now is the time to eliminate expectations. This is still the hardest one for me. Burning Man seeps into my psyche, intoxicating me with images, scenes, sometimes whole operas of how it will be when I get there. Sometimes, I will find myself looking at the sky and imagining seeing Black Rock Lake below it. Then, I catch myself and think, "Wait a minute. This picture of the playa is an illusion. A beautiful illusion." Meanwhile, there is the present unfolding before me right now. It's all I really have. It's all there is. So when I find myself dreaming about Burning Man, it is my trigger to become more aware of what is happening in that moment.

It's not easy not thinking about Burning Man. But if I see a BRC bumper sticker on the back of someone's car on the freeway, I will cross three lanes of traffic just to flash them a peace sign. And that's okay, because that's what happening now.

.Never talk to strangers, they are evil

2. Participation sucks, that is what other people are for

3.Grey water is ful of essential vitimens and minerals, and can provide 48% of you FDA recommended intake of E-coli, very important

4. Porta poties make excellent bins, for your broken down bits of sofa, food waste, glass bottles, dead campmates and unwanted shade structures

5. the DPW love being gifted old sofas, broken bikes and defunct and failed shade structure, so just leave em in your camp space when you leave they wil realy appreciate,

6. Never offer a ride to anyone you talk to online or find by the side of the road especially if they are drunken irish nurses

7.people like gifting so much that you can go into their camp and help your self

8. Hiding peoples car keys is so funny everyone will apreciate it, especially the day before exodus, especially if you throw them in the porta pottie

9.Piss clear??? Piss daily i say, if its orange drink less, a daily brown piss smelling of mouldy pumpkin is ideal

10. Wrap all your gifts in 3 layers of wrap[ping parer everyone loves opening presents

11. People love being spanked without permission,

12 Ditto for taking pictures

13 Never put lights on your bike or yourself, its stoopid and spoils everyones fun, what use is haing an art car if you dont run over human speed bumps

14 Any one with their breast on show loves having people make comments, better still have a feel they will thank you for it

15 hugs are gay

17 what happened to 16

16 there it is

18 Random mardi graw and 99c store beads make fantastic gifts people wil treasure forever

19, Megaphones make you witty and more intelligent, everything you say through them will be much more valid if projected to everyone in a 100metre radius

20 especially atsound camps

21 especially at 7am

22 did i mention talking to strangers

23 the Police wil happilly tell you where the best drugs can be found, just ask

24 Always pass your joint to the cops its just plain rude not to

25 never take candy, beads, drugs, or hugs from strangers, its probably poison.

26 Always store your parafin for your fire performances in water bottles,

27 if you've never taken horse tranquiliser beofre and some strange man offers it to in a part of the city you dont recognise then clearly you must do it, especially if you've been drinking heavily

28 Bacon is not welcome in black rock city, if you bring it you will be ostracised from the community

29 Art cars are way more fun to dive when loaded

30, especially when driven off the "streets" designated streets are for loosers, camps love it when you randomly drive through, your new found friends will all chcukle at what cad you are when you crash through their dome

31, always hug death guild, especially if you are not wearing pants, they are such a friendly bunch,

32 always remind the DPW, how "WE" built this city when you arrive on saturday monring

33 grabge collection is on tuesday, friday and monday from outside your neighbours camp

34 If evrybody honks their horn during exodus we will all get out quicker,

35 why carry water is so heavy and never matches your outift, that what other peoples camps are for they've got plenty

36 if your tripping and not having a fun time, go and make some friends, people love having people come by their camp and live out their harsh drug experiences in their private cam space, bonus points if you are reliving bad 'Nam expeeriences, previous sexual trauma or the police and everyonne you see are following you for the CIA

37, Buring man not as godd as it used to be then tell everone, particularly if you now think its shit and still come despite this

38 Virgins shouldn't be encoraged in any way, refuse to validate them, aknowledge them, help them or brake if you are driving your art car, as i said you should be loaded whislt doing this

39, If you are burnier than thou, tell the people in question, explain how yuo are better at it than the,, your costume is better, you've been going longer, larry once flicked his ash on you at thunderdome

40, if you need to have a discussion of a personal nature with you partner or are having difficulties in your relationship, then totally wait unitl you are craced out, aint slept for 4 days, way to hot, dehydrated, high on PCP and stuck in the middle of a hot dusty desert t resolve them

41 Fuck themes

42 No seriously fuck themes

43 Only queers dress up

44Anyone you ask where are you from and they say san fransisco, then say of course you are dear, as patronisingly as possible,

45 anyone who has flown from overseas is an alien in your country and is probably sbubersive, pread you patriot act and act upon it, use a satilite phone to report the to the toll free number 1800-patriot.

46 Camp stella the clean and sober camp all really want acid so spike their cool aid, they wil thank you for it.......when the sun stops melting

47 glitter is a costume,

48 Everybody likes feathers so more is more in my opinion

49 jesus drunknnurse seriously dude get a life how many have you thought of

50 i know i know, i'll finish up soon so we can get on to bitiching

51 Check the ntice board at centre cam for the Daily update on who we hate today board, if unable to check this then generally we will be bitching about ravers/ non artists/ artisits/ dogs/ people with kids onthe playa / The LLC/ BLM/

52 it is your job to ensure no body sees anythin unsavoury on the playa, like gay people touching or nekkid fat people , rangers are equiped with pepper spay for this purpose

53 did i say hugs were for queers

54 Perfomance art you dont get?? then tell the perfomrers they suck, everyone likes feed back right?

56 Recycle camp love picking non cans out of their bags so liberally spinkle some little treats in there glass, mouldy food, used needles, those guys realy appreciate the effort to spice up their job

57, By pass the ques at pancake shack by pushing thorugh with a 20 dollar bill evryone will step aside because you are clearly an important individual

58 piss daily and piss everywhere, porta potties are just for people whith too much time on their hands

59 ciggerette butts are biogeradable and should be liberally depositied eveywhere

60, Everyone will like your music especially if you like Gambain thrash gabba or german techno,

61, ditto if its loud

62 no dude i mean seriously loud if centre camp dont complain then it aint loud enough

63 there is no such thing as bad techno

64 fuck boundires

65 your camp is always better than other peoples and feel free to tell them

65 If you get drunk and violent then buddy make it a double everyone loves bad vibes

66 if you believe youshould be on the stage then go for it, dont let camp owners, the Rangers or other forms of facists supress your radical self expression

67 Everyone loves shirt cockers

68 shirt cockers love being told to put some pants on, loudly

69 As i said megaphones are an ideal tool for epressing opinions such as the one above

70 Make sure you get a new cup at each bar you visit

71, porta potties make excellent cup receptacles

72. never screw the lid on the bottle you pee in

73 especially if is somehwere other people can trip over

74 people cleaning the playa after wards, find picking up human turds a thoroughy rewarding use of their time

75 Stealing is the gift you give your self

76 Always fuck in other peoples camps

77 Loudly!!

I'm a huge fan of Redhook ESB and Sierra Nevada but don't want to haul bottles for space & trash (not to mention glass) concerns....
Please suggest some great tasting, high % beers that come in cans! Thanks!

i heard of a raw eater not getting enough electrolytes...

make sure you eat salty things to help keep your balances good, so that you are retaining water.

we love bacon (and doritos) on the playa.....mmmmmm........BACON!

contact lenses on the playa?

anyone have any suggestions for contact lens wearers on the playa? this will be my first year and I don't see or perceive so well without my contact lenses. I have prescription sunglasses for the day but what do blind people like me do to keep the eyes clean and seeing? thanks!

Gifting ideas..

So I have heard the standards for gifting:
- Take poloriod shots of people and give them the picture
- Misters
- Glow braclets and neckalces
- Share a meal
- Buttons with your theme camp

But what I am looking for is something new, interesting, useful, fun, easy to tote around and have on hand to give...

What have you gifted that worked well?
