<div>i am a *reformed* playa lover. makes me really fucking sad that i can't go out there and enjoy seeing the few hundred people out there that i really like in one place. but yeah.... <br/> <br/>this year we made the trip. we created big art, put it under the man in the "Green Man Pavilion". the organizers were psyched, saying our art was more on theme than most anything out there, big woooopity do. we created experiments in free energy that were interactive and playful, housed in a sculpture ready to burn. we invested thousands of our own money into creating art that we believed in because we wanted to turn people on to new ideas about energy. <br/> <br/>after one fucker decided to burn the big fucker, it all went downhill. i had to laugh....the pavilion was closed for days and almost no one got to experience the "green" art that had been carefully cultivated to bring on some sense of awareness in the haze. tens of thousands of dollars in equipment destroyed, not to mention many extra days of hard work put upon the volunteers who had spent weeks building that crazy shit in the first place. my handsome spent half of his vacation cleaning up other peoples' stupidity. what a waste. <br/> <br/>someone set a beautful wooden sculpture of the Statue of Liberty on fire, right on its trailer....oblivious to the need of the artist to get HOME at the end of the week. stupid stupid burners. stop screwing each other over you fucked up pyromaniacs! <br/> <br/>after many fires and explosions we rode our bikes out at the end of the week to see "Crude Awakening" burn late on Saturday night. it was clear at this point that we had registered at least 1500 vehicles out there this year, as the air filled with a sickening mix of exhaust and chemicals that should never be known to man. i choked, literally, until i had to leave the whole nasty scene behind. as the sky lit up with an orange mushroom cloud of doom all i could think was that some very clever control freak in DC has figured out how to destroy a whole movement of nonconformists by giving them a match and letting them immolate or suffocate on the fumes. <br/> <br/>so yes, i'm now a stupid ex-burner, in rehab. makes me sad that i spent years of my life out there trying to build a world-quality interactive arts experience only to see it devolve into a second rate fireworks show. <br/> <br/>i hope my burner friends get what they need out there, take the good and turn it into something better. i've fallen in love out there more than once and will always have a soft spot for my tribe that makes the trek, but next year i'll go take my talent somewhere less wasteful. <br/> <br/>ps...jesse wright didn't come this year, and there was no good music left on the playa. the ultimate shame.</div> <div> posted in <a href="http://tribes.tribe.net/burningbah">Why I won't (EVER) go to Burning Man</a> - 3 replies </div>
