Guess I'll hop on the wagon now that there seems to be a bit more posting going on :o)
Hubby and I went on a 100 day road trip starting before BM and ending on Thanksgiving. For most of the trip I did ok with my weight. It's hard driving and eating out all the time to really stay in shape. However, the last month of the trip really did us both in. Of course he was already too thin and so the extra weight looked good on him (and he's already lost a bunch of it now anyway..sigh). I, on the other hand, started the trip heavier than I like and only added to it. Add to that the holidays when we got back, and then throw in a good hefty dose of depression due to the inability to get a job, add wine, stir. Add more wine. Stir. You get the idea.
So here I am doing really well with eating...I'm doing an elimination/detox thing that my cousin recommended (she in school to get her ND) and lo and behold...I'm not losing anything. Of course not. I mean, I've cut out everything bad in my diet, yet I still am not losing weight. I don't get it. I've been exercising too, and every time I step on the scale it's either the same as when I started or it's gone UP. And I'm not one of those people who can go without weighing themselves - that's how I ended up in this mess in the first place. Plus, no, my clothes are definately not feeling looser.
I don't get it. I"m drinking at least 8 - 10 glasses of water and green tea a day, eating nothing processed, no soy, no wheat or anything with gluten, no nightshades, no preservatives...pretty much only eating whole grains, veggies and fruit with some organic chicken thrown in once in a while. Maybe I'm using too much olive oil when I roast my veggies? Or eating too much fruit? I've never been diciplined about writing down what I eat but maybe I should. This is getting really old.

Fasting and detox's can actually slow your metabolism down b/c your body thinks it starving and tries to hold onto its stores. Try eating more HEALTHY food, more often. So 5-6 SMALL meals or snacks during the course of the day may help jump start your metabolism.
And yes, be careful how much olive oil you use in your cooking. Getting healthy fats is essential, but remember they are still FAT and can impact your weight loss.
I would keep eating fruit, but you may want to stay away from it in the evenings as it is still sugar and carbs (again, the healthy kind). Some ppl say it doesnt matter, some do. If you're worried about it, then try evenings w/o it for a while.
And remember to give it a few weeks to work, you may be correcting some past metabolic damage. (personally, it took me months to repair low-carb diet damage I had done to myself. I couldn't even look at a piece of bread w/o gaining weight. Now, I can eat healthy carbs w/o the instant gain.) -

Tue, January 15, 2008 - 3:10 PMOh, and try 8-10 glasses MORE a day. And watch your sodium intake. If you're not eating processed foods you should be okay, though.
Sodium won't make you gain weight, or impede your loss, but it will make you retain water and throw off your scale. (and so will Wine!) -

I'd gone from pretty much drinking nothing at all (except an occasional diet soda and um, wine) to drinking a minimum of 8-10, and some days more. Gallon days are hard, I'm peeing every 10 min. Literally. Ask Dusty lol.

Tue, January 15, 2008 - 4:25 PMI don't think I'm eating too little...I do eat regular, small meals. Today I started off with a pureed asian pear and psyllium husk powder...then I had a cup of lentil soup I made with rice and a small salad with my own dressing. Then I had some spaghetti squash with carrots and zucchini. Then a small bowl of "Nutty Rice" cereal with almond milk. Also at some point had some brown rice crackers with hummus.
So I think that would put me around...1000 calories so far, at least aproximately. Hm, okay maybe I am eating too few calories. Sheesh, it dosen't feel like it, I feel like I'm being a big cow.
I bet you are right too about the needing to repair low-carb dieting damage.
I'm enjoying eating this way, I'm just frusterated with the scale. Fortunately too hubby has said he's more than happy to keep eating how we're eating with a few healthy modifications (like adding back the "nightshades" and other vinegars, and some soy products and occationally cheese, which we're missing).
On a positive note, I saw pictures of myself from this summer and I was really happy with how I looked, so I think my goal should be getting back to that weight, not some unrealistic weight I've never actually been. -

Tue, January 15, 2008 - 4:51 PMThe only problem I have with calorie trackers is that I'm doing the cooking and modifying recipes, so I don't know how to put them into my meal plan for the day. I've always had a hard time with that...any suggestions?
The other thing with not eating enough...I guess my experience has been that sure, after a while maybe your metabolism slows or shuts down, but when I cut calories, the first couple weeks I lose weight and then it slows or stop; I've never had "not eating enough" be an issue so early on. -

Tue, January 15, 2008 - 5:02 PMI think with both calorie trackers I mentioned, you can plug in the ingredients, rather than pick from specific recipes.
And if you were following the "eating while traveling" diet (i.e. high fat and high carb, lack of fruit and vegetables and fiber) and then moved into what how you are eating now, you probably have shocked your system quite a bit.
I'm not sure how long you've been on this current eating regimen, but I would also give it a few weeks to see if your body adjusts. If by then you think you're eating enough *and* getting enough exercise and still not losing any weight, then you should check with your doctor to make sure that you don't have any thyroid issues or other health problems.
Our bodies are made up of very weird chemical processes that don't always work the way we think they should, or the way we want them to. -

Wed, January 16, 2008 - 9:48 AMAs far as tracking calories in recipes, sites like sparkpeople.com will let you build them. So if I was making a chicken pasta dish, I would include:
2 chicken breasts
4 oz pasta
8 oz chicken broth
1 onion
etc then when I enter in my serving for that meal, I enter .5 so it just divides up the pot for me. Its a lot of work at first b/c that's when you're doing the bulk of entering, but once you've got them in your database its pretty easy. Also, you don't necessarily need to check your calories every day. Once you get a feel for it, you can just spot check certain days to make sure you're on target.
And if you don't want to count calories, you can use the portion method. You should eat a portion of protein and a portion of carbs 6x a day. A portion of carb=your fist and a portion of protein=your open palm. You can eat all the veggies you want, but fruit counts as a carb. Its a bit more strict, but its very balanced and will keep your energy level balanced through the day. If you're veggie it may be hard to get that much protein, but do what you can as it will help feed your muscle so you don't burn that instead of fat.
You really do sound like you're on the right path! I know its frustrating to be so diligent and not see any results but remember that our bodies change from the inside out and it takes time to start seeing the results of our healthier choices.
