Re: great sites for LEDs and other lights
Tue, June 19, 2007 - 11:16 PMIn my opinion $30 for a renewable energy light source is not too much. How much over the course of say a year would you spend on disposable batteries to run lights cost. Not only in money, but to the environment. This year is Green Man and I say by renewables. It will save in the long run. -

Wed, June 20, 2007 - 10:05 AMJosh,
you rock for starting this thread, since it always gets asked. :) Here's the in-progress list I've had going. I haven't tried them all.
PRE-MADE:
LED & glow: www.geesales.com/ (responsive and burner friendly)
LED & glow: www.extremeglow.com
LED & glow items: www.liquidlight4glow.com
LED & glow items: www.lightgod.com/
glow: glowrus.com/
Krill lights: www.kriana.com/pages/howtochoose.html
LED & standard rope lights: search eBay, tons there and cheaper than elsewhere
safety stuff, including flashing vests: www.safetyled.com/
* I don't recommend www.technomoves.com My experience with them was the internet equivalent of buying from some college guy out of the trunk of his car. and the items that were supposed to last up to 10 hours began to fade after 30min.
BUILD YOUR OWN:
EL wire: www.coolight.com
EL and LED: www.coolightwest.com

Re: great sites for LEDs and other lights
Tue, April 8, 2008 - 5:36 PMJust sent this info to a friend, and thought I should share it with youze too:
If you want some awesome bright colored accent lighting, I bought some of these last year and wired them into my mutant vehicle's electical system: www.plasmaled.com/high_power_module.htm
They are BAD ASS bright, and only use 1 W of power each. I used some in my tent as well - you can wire them with a rocker switch into a 12V battery (all available at Radio Shack) and they'll run amazingly long. I did a lot experimenting last year with different kinds of lighting (12V CCFL, AA-powered LEDs, 12V LEDs, and el-wire) and these were the hands-down winner. -

Re: great sites for LEDs and other lights
Wed, April 9, 2008 - 9:33 AMDo you know if these are Luxeon emitters? It looks like a Luxeon or similar LED with a driver built into the base or attached to the wires so it can accept 12v (usually these LED emitters want 3-5v). The aluminum base also acts as a heatsink so the LEDs don't overheat. They look very cool. We are using 1W RGB luxeon fixtures to light our dome this year. Prices actually look really good, since the 1W LEDs are about 5 bucks a pop and drivers are hard to find for <$10.
Anyone have a source for 1W Hi-Po LED drivers that are cheap? I got one of the LuxDrive Mini-Puck drivers and they're super tiny, but run about 10 bucks apiece. Also would like to know if anyone knows a source for drivers that will accept a PWM signal instead of straight power. -

Re: great sites for LEDs and other lights
Wed, April 9, 2008 - 10:03 AMDon't know, Justin, but I'll bet PlasmaLED would tell you if you emailed them. I think they assemble their products in-house.
-
Re: great sites for LEDs and other lights
Wed, April 9, 2008 - 1:02 PMThere are clones of the Luxeon emitters from China on the market now,
but I think these are cheaper because they are just using a resistor for current limiting (no internal driver)
It's a lot less expencive, but on 12 volts, half of the input power is lost as heat in the resistor, (not as efficient as a driver).
This does mean that you can externally PWM them for brightness control.

Re: great sites for LEDs and other lights
Wed, May 14, 2008 - 1:03 PMJust thought I would throw out a plug for the supplier that I have been using - www.ledsupply.com
This is for bare LED emitters, luxeon star and similar boards, drivers, etc - not "blinky lights" but parts to make your own. They have very good service and fair prices on stuff like the Luxeons (what we are using for our big LED project).
also www.uniqueleds.com was recommended by one of the instructables and I found this site to have more reasonable prices for 5mm type LEDs including hi-power white and UV LEDs. They also have pretty good prices on 5mm RGB and the newer high-flux "piranha" style LEDs.
Looks like y'all have the "blinky toys" sites covered, hopefully these sites will help people looking to work on their own projects or just play with LEDs.
