Bad-Dawg posted about this in his blog, thought I'd share here. From the folks at MIT:

"The idea of using LED fixtures with artwork has been explored in a variety of settings, but is still a fairly new area of art exploration...
We are seeing the cusp of this curve even now, as architects are including LED based lighting into buildings, and a few artists are beginning to use LED lighting in their work. The purpose of this project is to further expand and enable the use of LED lighting in artwork by providing theoretical information, and information from my own experiences producing artwork of this sort."

there's a good amount of tech info for those who are interested in trying something like this.

This one is a little more simple and low-tech, we are using this as the basis for our current LED array project. It includes great explanations and also the microcontroller code to run the color changing, which is cool. You can use whatever LEDs you like, a board with a bunch of 5mm LEDs or bigger luxeon-type emitters - we are probably going with the luxeons for our arrays. We are also looking at doing this effect with artwork, where we match the LED colors to the colors of the artwork to cause certain parts of the image to "disappear" or change.. cool stuff. cheers!
