24 LEDs (wow!), hook in the back for hanging, runs on 4 AA, supposedly up to 30hrs, 2 settings, under $10 in most places. For that price it's probably cheaper and easier than making something similar.
I think this is the light Dusty Nipples was talking about in another tribe (Dusty?). Seems like a great cheap way to light up the tent or meal area at night. Maybe even bright enought to use as a makeup light at night (I'm still trying to resolve that).
I found it online at these sources:

or google "24 LED light ring" or "24 LED camping light"
if you try it out, please give us your review of it. :)

Re: ooh! cheap camp light: 24 LEDs
Tue, July 24, 2007 - 7:32 PMHeads up... I got two of these things, and I glued magnets to the back of one with the intent of hanging it in my tent. I'm suspect they are all made a little differently, but if you find cheap ones, like I did, they're probably very similar. Anyway, I used 4 really strong magnets and when testing it, it dropped on the floor. Granted, the fabric was thicker than tent fabric, but still... it dropped. And when it did, all the battery connectors and little plastic thingies that hold the batteries in place broke off. Totally not fixable. So, if you try this, be sure to use super strong magnets and be sure it holds well. It can't withstand even the smallest drop to the ground. Remove the batteries when you pack it in your luggage, and cushion it well when packing. -

Re: ooh! cheap camp light: 24 LEDs
Sun, July 1, 2007 - 10:13 AMI found some very nice mini LED lanterns at Big Lots. It's a three pack for $10. They white, 360 degree light and look pretty much dust proof.
Big Lots is a close-out store that has different names in different parts of the country, their stuff changes all the time, so good luck.

Just ordered a bunch of these - I couldn't justify shellng out hundreds of dollars on a solar system which would probably be overkill for our small camp, anyway. I like how you can hang them pointing upwards or downwards.
