Re: Hey!!! Check this out!!!
Wed, July 18, 2007 - 2:51 PMDoes anyone have a source for the two chemicals involved in glow sticks? It'd be fun to buy them in bulk and make as much as you need! -

Re: Hey!!! Check this out!!!
Wed, July 18, 2007 - 5:11 PMI was thinking of this.
There are actually four chemicals in a typical glowstick:
- Diphenyl oxalate (aka Phenyl oxalate Ester, Cyalume) or CPPO - this is the main ingredient and causes the chemiluminescence as it oxidises. Fairly harmless. I didn't find a source, but it must be reasonably obtainable.
- Hydrogen Peroxide - widely available. Tell people what you want it for so they don't think you're making bombs! I think 30% concentration works. Keep off fingers!
- The dye. This varies by color. Some of the dyes are carcinogenic but you only need a very small amount.
- Dioctyl Phthalate (DOP) - the solvent. Not very good for you - it's believed to mimic human hormones. There's controversy surrounding it's used as a plasticiser.
It was the DOP that put me off my project, which was to make a glowing fountain. I didn't feel that it was a suitable substance for an open system. If you just want to make glowsticks and can avoid skin contact, then fine. (But with them at 10c each I think you'd have to make an awful lot to justify buying and shipping the chemicals). -

Wed, July 18, 2007 - 5:13 PMI forgot the most useful source I found:

and these guys sell many things but not CPPO or DOP:

Wed, July 18, 2007 - 8:38 PMOnce a glowstick is broken open, the chemicals don't seem to last as long as you would expect. There may be some extra evaporation or oxidation going on. -

Re: Hey!!! Check this out!!!
Sun, August 5, 2007 - 8:33 PMI have a luminescent playa project in mind and have been digging online for suppliers of cyalume (diphenyl oxalate) with no success. My roommate is a biochem grad student and she helped me track down a CAS number (it's 3155-16-6) and compound Id (1198354) for cyalume, and we found some online references attempting to link to suppliers, but the links didn't work (anymore?) We're speculating that there's some legal disincentive to distribute the stuff directly to consumers, but I'd be psyched if someone finds a source.
In lieu of the pure cyalume liquid, I'm thinking of just busting the tops off of a bunch of glowsticks without breaking the hydrogen peroxide sheath inside, gathering the cyalume + fluorescent dye mixtures from several glowsticks into a single container, and then mixing the hydrogen peroxide/DOP solution in later. seems backasswards, but might work for what i'm doing.
alternatively--and more in the spirit of the green man/renewable energy idea--several vendors supply photoluminescent powder, which creates mixtures that glow for 10-12 hours from just being exposed to light, without a chemical reaction, and works over and over again for several years. i just ordered some from 'ready set glo' (tinyurl.com/3dq8e6) to test how bright of a glow we're really talking about here. i'm skeptical, but the site claims that these days photoluminescent powder glows 10x brighter than those old glow-in-the-dark stars you had on your ceiling as a kid. -
