Greetings,
We are on a limited budget. What is a good way to light up our tent and shade structure tie lines so as to keep our brothers and sisters from getting hurt by them? I am thinking solar powered garden lights, but they are so pricey. We also have a limited amount of space in the RAV4 vehicle. Thanks for you ideas.

Tue, June 19, 2007 - 4:56 PMIf you have any 110v in your camp, it's hard to beat plain old xmas mini-light strings
There are battery operated strings that are pretty cheap
www.1000bulbs.com/product.php
LED strings use less power, but cost more
www.1000bulbs.com/product.php
you could be "green" and get a solar lantern for $50
www.ledtronics.com/ds/SLR-LANTERN/
not as good, but cheaper
www.amazon.com/Wagan-EL-2.../B000BQOPKY
Stores like "big lots" often have close-out solar walk lights
Or you could use strips of reflective tape for a zero power option. -

Tue, June 19, 2007 - 5:12 PMWe have those little solar garden lanterns on a spike here in NZ for about USD10. Are they expensive in the states? -

Tue, June 19, 2007 - 5:59 PMThere about the same here. Depends on the quality of what you want...
Solar lights are a good idea.

Wed, June 20, 2007 - 10:15 AMSuzi,
Ive been kicking this around as well. I don't know what your budget is, but I've been leaning toward doing rope light. It seems easier to have one single piece to mark the tent/stake perimeter than to have to mark many individual places. The rope light is encased, so more durable and protected than string light. Reusable. and can be run off a battery (solar rechargeable if you want to get really crazy). I was also looking at the solar stake lights (garden lights), but even at costco they were still running $100+. Plus the rope lights come in many colors can can pack up fairly small.

Re: lighting safety
Sat, June 23, 2007 - 2:18 AMHas anyone actually used the glow rope? I would think it wouldn't glow very brightly very long. Maybe you don't really need it to glow that much though to do the trick? -

Sat, June 23, 2007 - 6:54 AMclamoring,
I'd like to know the same thing. I couldn't find info on how much sun exposure was required (what if it's a cloudy day?) or how long the glow lasted. -

Re: lighting safety
Sat, June 23, 2007 - 7:37 AMThese guys say they are the manufacturer
www.pelicanrope.com/glowropes.html
this page says 8 hours, but it will be pretty dim by them
Blacklight will activate it too.
When I get some of it, I'll set some in the back yard and take some pics. -

garden lights
Sat, June 23, 2007 - 2:07 PMCostco sells a 15 pack of solar powered LED garden lanterns for about $90. I brought a full set of them last year and they worked great - if they're out in the sun during the day, they will glow all night and still be glowing at dawn.
If you do go this route, assemble them at home and bring them in a plastic bin. The packaging they come in is *very* MOOPy. Hell, it was MOOPy enough in my garage, it would have been ridiculous on the playa.

Re: Glow rope
Mon, June 25, 2007 - 10:55 AMHmm....sounds easy to make your own, if you simply dip your rope in phosphorescent paint.
(i hate buying stuff i can easily make myself ) :P
