solder

Last night I started using a slightly thicker gauge of rosin-core solder and had a much harder time working with it, than I had with other kinds. At the moment, I'm playing around with 2.5mm high bright wire for a new wearable project. What kinds/gauges of solder do you all use?

A lot of the newer solder is "lead free" and it sucks. It takes higher heat to melt and does not flow as well as the older stuff. I keep several gauges and fluxes to match different tasks. You must clean a joint after using older rosin flux, it is a corrosive and will degrade fine wires onver time. Small stuff is best done with a "no-clean" flux and 63/37 Sn/Pb. I mostly get solder from surplus outlets so I can keep a variety around.

Anyone remember StarTronics? I was lucky enough to pick up 4lbs of
silver solder bars years ago for cheap. I tin most of my work and
      sweat it together.

For EL Wire I also use the 63/37 "eutectic" low temp stuff with a
      controlled tip
